00:00hello and welcome to my spoiler review of the Batman where hot damn do we have
00:07a lot to discuss so get comfortable and in my non-spoiler review I divided the
00:14review into the good and the not as good but here I'm just I just I just love this
00:19movie so much I just embrace it you know mistakes and all so I'm just gonna talk
00:23about it I and I I've laid out the conversation here as you can see in a
00:29way that I think unfolds naturally and we'll just sprinkle in some of the
00:32things that I think could have been better but at the end of the day I
00:35really do feel this is the best Batman movie ever made and I see tremendous
00:40potential for the future ah it was weird I was watching this and as excited as I am
00:45for Michael Keaton to return I was like this is it we're here let's just focus
00:51on this and so you know Warner Brothers buckshot strategy you know the
00:58positive is that it delivers gems like this but the negative is that then we
01:02then move on to something else and it's like why this is so good all right so
01:08where I want to start are the best Batman moments I'll Robert Pattinson I I see
01:15photos of him on the red carpet and it's still hard for me to believe that he's a
01:18good Batman he you know he I don't have a problem with the skinny Batman but
01:23whatever weight he was at for the role he's got he's lost it maybe most of it I
01:28mean I don't know we saw some shots of him as Bruce but he spends most of the
01:32movie is Batman which makes total sense because of course that's the true Bruce
01:36Wayne you know Bruce Wayne is the mask so I'm sure that in future I saw some
01:42complaints there weren't enough Bruce Wayne scenes but I think in future films
01:46we'll have that well we'll get more I think Batman will understand the
01:50necessity of his Bruce Wayne persona you know right now he's depressed he
01:54doesn't really want to leave his room except as Batman so okay so um the mom
02:00the first thing I want to point out is the monologue I thought that the
02:03narration the net well that so it's not a monologue really but but you know the
02:07narration of the film from you know Batman's perspective was really wonderful I
02:12loved it I saw some you know again some reviews pointing out that it was like
02:15Travis Bickle and other vigilante characters in cinema and I'm like that
02:19might be true but what it's really like is Batman comics where he often will
02:24narrate the situation particularly Batman year one so I really loved that I thought
02:29it was extremely comics accurate because you know Batman's not very chatty so the
02:33only really way you can get into his head is if you're in his head so I thought
02:37that was fantastic I thought that was a really strong choice then I love the idea
02:42that he weaponized the shadows like we all know that Batman embraces fear
02:48because criminals are a cowardly and superstitious lot but it was a really
02:52great I think way to expand on that that he weaponized shadows that you know you
02:59don't know if he's in that shadow or not I love in that spray can rolled into the
03:03shadows and that got in that you know that criminal really now I don't know I
03:07guess Batman believes in the broken windows policy right you know any kind
03:11of crime leads to greater crime but I'm like I don't really think you're with
03:14Batman's time don't worry about it and I always think of that really funny SNL
03:17sketch where they're like really he's breaking people's jaws over you know
03:21stealing cars but anyway that was very clever when that rolled in there and the
03:27guy was you know I was like just forget it I'll get a new paint can and I
03:30wasn't I thought that was brilliant like they just turn on the bat signal to
03:33freak everybody out and I was like yes yes you know don't just turn it on
03:38because you need him although how would you get in touch with them if you need
03:40him I guess they have to clarify that but it was just great that any moment
03:46Batman could be in the shadows and then of course on that subway station those
03:50guys got the short straw because he happened to be in those shadows he was in
03:55that shadow and when and when he came out I was just I was so impressed and I
04:00love the sound I think sound is so well used here including the weight of the
04:06bat suit he walks very slowly I saw someone describe it a reviewer describe
04:11it as like a pallbearer but I didn't get that at all you know it's funny I saw
04:15also another review I think it was the Hollywood Reporter where the the person
04:20loved the Adam West show it was like why did Batman become so serious and I'm
04:24like you're holding on to a Batman from the 60s that's never been like that
04:27since that's crazy man but anyway but you know I think for the most part we're
04:33all on the same page and the kind of Batman that we want but I loved I love
04:39that he moves slowly because it created I think a sense of Batman was not worried
04:42you were gonna get away he was like you can do whatever you want I've seen you
04:47you're on my shit list I'm coming and I'm gonna get you I just thought that was
04:52fantastic and the way that you heard his footsteps in the dark and you're like my
04:55hearing things is it actually Batman and it was it was just great I just
05:00absolutely adored it and I loved every single way that Robert Pattinson moved
05:04his Batman he as I said in my non-spoiler review his movements are deliberate you
05:10know like he he knows exactly doesn't you know everything is extremely well
05:14planned out and that makes it even scarier because you're like this guy is
05:17really on top of things I particularly like the way his eyes moved I thought that
05:23was just absolutely incredible and I've seen other you know other actors have
05:27blacked out their eyes around you know so that even though they have the eye holes
05:31to really create that sense but I've never seen it as effective it's as it's
05:35done here I really do wonder what the difference is is Robert Pattinson's eyes
05:40bigger or maybe you know but it's it's from the year one I mean the earth one
05:45comic that Jeff Johns did very expressive eyes and I think that you know eyes are the
05:50window to the soul and in the past you know Batman's eyes have been whited out
05:54with lenses and I've always liked that but I really liked seeing his eyes here
05:58because it was the one of our best ways to tell what he was thinking and what
06:03again it's like once he saw you it was over and so that again the eyes are very
06:07well used there you're like oh no he's looking over here this is real bad I loved
06:12it loved it loved it loved it then you know they they leaned a little heavily on you
06:16know the orphan boy you know when the mayor's killed and his son is there I was like oh yeah
06:20yes of course because that because you know they didn't do an origin story they
06:23jumped right into year two and I appreciated that because like spider-man
06:26we've seen Batman's origin done to death at this point it's like it's like a
06:31Christmas Carol everyone knows the story so I thought it was funny though when he
06:35saw that little boy and I was like whoa hand him a Robin application Batman he's
06:39like you're one step out of me grace that's year three but I also by the way I
06:45think Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson are crazy enough to do child Robin you know
06:48before Hollywood's been too scared they're like what if little children
06:51want to imitate this movie and you're like I don't know what to tell you it's a
06:55child that's the way it's done maybe not that young but I was like because I
07:00really want to see Robin done correctly and I'm like I think Matt Reeves and
07:02Robert Pattinson are the two to do it but yeah I was like give that boy like give
07:06that little child a Robin application so that was nice but then what so here's two
07:11of my favorite moments for the from the script that I thought were just really not
07:15only very well done but caught me by surprise as it was you know with you
07:20know I saw also some reviews say that we've seen so many Batman movies at this
07:23point we can't be surprised and I'm like I was surprised and I've not only seen a
07:27lot of Batman movies but I've read a lot of Batman comics so I loved the
07:32juxtaposition of each time he goes to Penguins Club twice and he says do you know
07:37who I am first is Batman and then is Bruce Wayne and he gets incredibly different
07:41reactions from those two twin henchmen though there's the Carver Brothers right
07:45I thought that was hilarious I loved that and I love that Bruce Wayne got a
07:50better reaction oh we'll talk about the penguin club I mean the Batman going
07:55around a club with like really so I I've in my non-spoiler review I said I did not
08:00care for the music of Kurt Cobain which annoyed some of you but boy do I love
08:04club techno I was like this is fantastic I was just like I was on cloud nine so but
08:09that was fantastic just absolutely great to do that scene that way and it was
08:14what I one of my favorite parts of the movie because it was just so it was just
08:16it was so perfectly captured what Batman is and you know his the duality and that
08:21he wants to be Batman but sometimes he gets a better person get better reaction
08:25to Bruce Wayne now I read an interview after seeing the movie where Matt Reeves
08:30described his Bruce Wayne is a rock star recluse instead of a playboy and I was
08:34like oh that actually makes perfect sense I think they didn't do a good enough job
08:38establishing that interpretation of Bruce Wayne I think they'll get there I like
08:43for instance when Bruce Wayne was when the his house was his apartment was bombed
08:47we'll talk about that more we get to Alfred but when he was showing up and he
08:51had the black t-shirt on he started to start to look like that and so I was
08:54getting bits of that already but I didn't I didn't zero in on what Matt Reeves was
08:58trying to accomplish and so I think that's an interesting modern approach to what
09:03Bruce Wayne would be like today you know I think Bruce Wayne the depiction of
09:07Batman and Bruce Wayne is sometimes stuck in the like the 40s and maybe even 80s a
09:12little bit as to what you know that playboy thing and I just like for a long
09:16time his rogues gallery was stuck in the mobster motif which is why I kind of liked
09:21David Ayer putting the gangs I mean the the gang spin on it from gangsters to
09:26gangs and now you know going more like the manhunter route Fincher is a huge
09:32influence on this film I think is also and you know with the social media and
09:37that kind of a thing of the lone the lone criminal but yet it's part of a
09:42community through the internet you know it wouldn't that be interesting and
09:45that's how Batman's rogues gallery kind of worked we'll talk you know I'm getting a
09:49little ahead of myself but I like updating the Batman mythos overall to
09:54more you know in a way that works and so I think that the Rockstar thing could
09:58Rockstar recluse could work we just have to get there and then the other thing I
10:02liked was when he said when he said he was vengeance and then the henchmen they
10:06asked the henchmen in the arena who are you and he said oh I don't know if I put it
10:13in my Nygma thing but I loved when they've arrested Nygma and he had two
10:17driver's licenses and they're like which one are you and Riddler says you tell
10:20me and I was like god damn it that's brilliant I loved it so much I loved it
10:24so much it was subtle but yet it just hit you like a ton of bricks it was great
10:28but the henchmen said I am vengeance and Batman was like oh I might have been in
10:34bad influence on some people I thought that was and you could even see that a
10:38little bit in Robert Pattinson's performance he was like I did this is
10:41enough that was also unexpected to Batman and I thought that was great and
10:45that's why Batman was like maybe I have to change my my branding a little bit
10:49because I seem to have created some problems for Gotham but you know it's
10:53just again two different ways you can take something you know the vengeance
10:58idea I thought it was absolutely brilliant all right next let's talk about the
11:02bet I mean as you can see I love this movie I have a lot of thoughts about it so
11:06you can jump to different parts but this is like this is just a let's just
11:10settle in for a conversation I love it I can't wait to hear your thoughts down
11:13below I know some of you aren't gonna like this movie I knew the Rotten
11:16Tomatoes score would slip a little bit damn it but I mean I think some of you
11:20are gonna like it as much as me and then we can geek out about it all right next
11:24the bat tech like the animate again the animated series it was current but yet it
11:29had a real 1940s almost 1940s sci-fi noir feel to it I was like that's
11:35ridiculous but I love it and it clearly works I like I believed it worked but it
11:40was just so artistic it was almost a little bit like you know metropolis to
11:46Fritz Lang's metropolis I thought it was a great choice and the production design
11:49team deserves kudos because it's not only hard to design a world but to design the
11:54tech of that world and yet still have it be believable as cutting-edge that's
11:58impressive it's very very impressive then speaking of his wonderful toys the
12:04Batmobile now the tumbler has in the past been my favorite Batmobile and I still feel
12:10the tumbler deserves his own special place in bat history but the fact that
12:15this little muscle car this tiny little muscle car could be as cool as the
12:19tumbler is a real you know something that Matt Reeves and his team should be
12:24proud of now the way it was introduced also in the shadows totally caught me
12:28off-guard and I thought it was brilliant I didn't even know the car was there and
12:32that's the point you didn't even know the Batmobile was there and then you hear it
12:35and then you see you first so again just like Batman first you hear it and you're
12:39like oh crap what's this and then you see the fireball you know for it to rub up
12:44its engines and everyone runs to their car and you would think well Batman's
12:49obviously gonna catch them immediately but then that's the brilliance of the
12:52movie that the things stalled I loved that the Batmobile stalled and it gave
12:56them a little bit of a head start on Batman of course he made up the distance
13:00because you know he saw you he got you were on a shit list he's coming for you but I
13:05just loved that it made Batman I think more realistic because noted you know
13:09shit happens to Batman too he's like darn it Alfred but I just thought that was
13:15just phenomenal it just made me so happy I laughed out loud when it stalled and it
13:20was just and it was clever again from a writing perspective because it made there
13:23be a car chase instead of being over before it even started so that was great
13:27and then as everyone was running off I love the Catwoman took the money she looks so
13:32cool on her motorcycle and the way she was driving and the way she picked up the
13:36money in the duffel bag and she could only get one bag but she was like you know
13:40screw it I'm getting something it was just so Catwoman and she looked just so
13:43perfect it was one of my favorite moments of the car chase just because it was so
13:46great and then the car chase itself the way this was filmed from the use of
13:54Michael Giacomo score that was incredible to the camera mounts on the
13:59respective vehicles that just was visceral I loved this sequence and also the
14:04fear again using Batman's eyes he was like this you know I hope I could make
14:09it and he just you know again it wasn't so I think Batman will eventually get this
14:13is only his second year he'll eventually get to a point where he's more skilled
14:17but right now where the reason Batman is so successful is that he just wants it
14:21more than you and I thought that really worked very you know I think that's very
14:24relatable and I worked very well and he's also a very lucky guy worked very well
14:29in this car chase where he was like I'm just not giving up I love and it was
14:33such a realistic car chase and I just it was incredible it was just one of the
14:38best sequences in the movie then let's talk now about Batman's mistake which I
14:43didn't even see until Batman saw that he'd made a mistake and again brilliant
14:48writing and I loved I loved seeing Batman by the way examine crime scenes and I love
14:52that there was a bat in the cage you know they're like why I don't think that
14:56rat likes you and Batman says it's not a rat and you see it's a bat and clearly
15:00Batman knows that's for him I was like this stuff's just brilliant and so he
15:05takes out the envelope and you know as they're exploring that that crime scene
15:09and everything he starts to get the feeling that Riddler knows that he's the
15:13Bruce Wayne is Batman and then he intentionally pulls back on trying to find
15:18out what the clues are because he doesn't want to expose his own identity I
15:22was right there with Robert Pattinson's Batman and I loved the fear and Robert
15:26Pattinson's Batman as well he was like is this it is this the end of Rico is this
15:30the end of Batman I was like oh this is incredible and that's why he didn't know
15:34that Riddler was gonna blow the seawall it's not that he wasn't as smart as
15:38Riddler had hoped it's that Riddler didn't realize that he had stumbled upon
15:42Batman's secret identity and that's why Batman pulled back from doing the
15:47investigation it was incredible it was just it was such a great it was to me a
15:52better twist than any of the other bigger twists they had lined up I just it
15:56was incredible all right let's talk about Riddler he again I when he was
16:01saying Bruce Wayne in the interrogation room and Batman's like shut the hell up
16:06man I love that anybody wasn't he just had a bone to pick with Bruce Wayne again
16:10you know it's just a horrible coincidence it's like hey when your alter ego is
16:13really famous he comes up he comes up in conversation that was just great and I
16:19thought I really related to what Riddler was saying saying everyone says they
16:23feel so bad for Bruce Wayne because he's an orphan but he's a rich orphan and his
16:27little you know hideaway in the clouds you know what's his problem and you know
16:31nobody cares about us actual orphans and when he said a baby died every winter I
16:35was like that's real bad you know this is very bad and I think also Bruce Wayne was
16:40kind of like maybe I should I mean I was a child but what the hell Alfred isn't
16:44our name on that orphanage you know like I can't believe it you know nobody paid
16:49more attention to that that was allowed to happen but I'm you know you know we
16:52have again there's no thank goodness there's no baby Batman I appreciate that
16:56so I loved that I thought that whole speech was really strong and I also like
17:01the online community you know small you know my audience laughed and they were like
17:05get about 500 followers but 500 people is an army you can do a lot of damage with
17:10even just a couple of people as we saw in the arena we'll talk about the arena I
17:14did not like that sequence too much but anyway I did think it was scary and I
17:18this was a twist I had not known about I loved the idea that he was able to not
17:22just like Batman weaponized the shadows Riddler in a way had weaponized these
17:27people who were living in the shadows that nobody even knew about and you're
17:29like holy crap I thought that was not only very smart but very scary when we see
17:34what happens with Facebook and QAnon and things like that today and the way people are
17:38weaponized through cults and Riddler had kind of created this he had created a
17:43cult and that was like very scary when you think about happen with January 6th
17:46you're like was January 6th actually kind of like a Batman event that's really
17:51freaky and weird so I thought that was incredible loved it loved it loved it then
17:56the Arkham interrogation not only what Paul Dano was saying was brilliant but how he
18:00looked he I love that he had soft clean hair like it was this innocence to him
18:06right I thought that was such a great choice you know often they depict
18:09criminals you know they're at the end of their rope they're a mess but you know
18:13you just you could feel he could reach out and you know like touch his hair I
18:17just thought that was a great really and it humanized him I just loved it and I
18:22loved his relationship with Batman that you know he didn't know who Batman was he
18:26wanted to be Batman's friend we'll talk about Joker in a moment you know with that
18:31riddle what's the less you have what makes them more valuable a friend I was like oh put
18:35that on a card I was wondering where did Riddler get those cards because they
18:38didn't seem like anyone would sell I was like are you making this somewhere they're
18:42very impressive I think that Warner Brothers could do a line of greeting
18:45cards although maybe I don't want those to exist in the real world because people
18:49might use them for evil but anyway he just wanted to be friends with Batman he
18:55felt I felt a kinship with him he felt Batman would get him which is why it was so
18:59funny when he was like this is this conversations not going the way I thought it
19:02would the way I dreamed it would and he started to really lose it I was like this
19:06is phenomenal Paul Dano you know you can hardly tell it was him for most of the
19:10movie with the voice changer and everything but he he blew he blew me away
19:14with just that one scene he was incredible I loved it and I think again it
19:20points out you know what came first the chicken or the egg it's almost impossible
19:23to tell with Batman and his villains and I guess here they are saying Batman came
19:26first to scare regular criminals but then he inspired some people to to level up
19:31up their criminal game to be on you know how Batman tried to level up you know
19:36the police and that's really fascinating you know that that's why these people
19:40you know people are drawn to Gotham because it's the it's the Super Bowl of
19:43criminality you get to interact and go up against Batman loved it loved it and
19:49Batman you know is a little nuts we'll talk about Martha Arkham when we get to
19:53that I don't think they handled that well at all all right so anyway my next thing I
19:57want to talk about is Gotham City loved this Gotham City it was incredible I
20:02loved it so much this was a kind of attention to detail you usually only see
20:06in video games the Times Square sequences the small little corners they were run
20:11into like coffee shops and bodegas the constant rain I loved it like the city
20:17could just never get clean like I just thought of that now but it just you could
20:21feel that when you were watching it you just I just put my finger on what exactly it
20:25was now I loved it I love the elevated train and always like that you can never
20:29see the sky almost it was very although you could see the bat signal so you could
20:32see it sometimes but I thought that was just really excellent Gotham was just so
20:36perfectly realized down to Selena's apartment which looked like it was right
20:40out of the comics I just thought that was so great just and even the way you
20:45know just where she lived and how she crawled out of the fire escape I mean I
20:50really felt like we'd actually like gone into the comics it was like really weird I was
20:53like what you actually made that real the penguin club as I said loved the
20:59penguin club the music was a big part of that the oops oops oops oops it was I just
21:04loved it and I love that the name of the super VIP club was 44 below I was like
21:09that's a great name for a club and then we'll talk more about the scenes in these
21:14I'm just talking about Gotham as a setting right now and then the Wayne
21:17apartment so that was hilarious I was like who designed this no wonder you guys
21:21were all a little weird I thought the Waynes were very miscast by the way like
21:25I thought I bought immediately the Bruce lived there but his parents when we saw
21:29that footage of them campaigning and we really only saw his father maybe Martha
21:32decorated it they should have said that and be like well explains a lot but
21:36Thomas Wayne didn't look like he would live there at all I mean Thomas Wayne
21:39didn't even look like a particularly wealthy individual to me he was very
21:42miscast but yeah I was like this wee house is really weird like no wonder you know
21:48Alfred the first thing Alfred should have done it's like let's move somewhere
21:50else so that was cool but I do feel even if they change Bruce Wayne to be like
21:56this reclusive rock star which again I think could work they need more of him
22:00to show the positive side of Gotham because a lot of times during this movie
22:04I was like why does anyone live here you know that's often a question people ask
22:07about Gotham and I think that it's important to answer that to show you know
22:11Bruce Wayne is supposed Bruce Wayne I love saying that he's supposed to show the
22:17Gotham that's that's pretty good you know or at least you know habitable even
22:21though it's corrupt so I would have liked to have you know seen more of you
22:25know what the good side of Gotham I guess and then also Arkham wasn't well
22:30enough realized especially since Bruce Wayne clearly has ties to that because
22:34his mother comes from that family we'll talk about that more when we get to the
22:37Martha Arkham reveal but I thought that Arkham should have been much but I mean
22:41maybe they ran out of time maybe they ran out of budget I don't know but Bruce Wayne
22:45should have had a more of a relationship with Arkham Asylum it just
22:48doesn't it doesn't make any sense considering that reveal but with a bit
22:53we did see of Arkham I thought was cool all right then the flood the flood half I
22:57knew about the flood going in I knew about that very early as I hinted it's it
23:02was something that done during Scott Snyder's comic book run that brought
23:05about zero year Riddler flooded Gotham I don't like the flood I mean I just got to
23:11this Gotham and you stuck it underwater I want to explore it more I mean that was
23:15really disappointing to me I guess it goes with the clean metaphor and all the
23:19rain they're like let's just give let's just don't get in the bath and I'm like
23:22I mean maybe you're baptizing it but it's not gonna turn out better so I didn't
23:26like it I didn't like it at all and I've never enjoyed Gotham flood storylines I
23:31didn't like zero year I didn't like no man's land you know I thought like the
23:35Gotham television show and they did no man's land that really took me out of it and
23:39that's a personal choice some of you might love that storyline but I think you
23:43know when we're starting this new world with Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves as
23:47Batman I think it's way too early to take Gotham off the board and to plunge
23:51them into no man's land I mean the whole point is territorial like how are our
23:55favorite villains rogues gallery gonna come out of this plot point you know it
24:00just doesn't I mean I guess got a penguin can consolidate his power maybe that maybe
24:07this will all be taken care of in the TV show that they're gonna do on HBO max
24:11but I don't like it I don't think Batman fits with the with an apocalyptic
24:15setting Batman is an urban character in my opinion so I just have major problems
24:20with it so I was like I'm annoyed I did one scene I did like though was when
24:25Catwoman was on her bike and she's like I'm trying to get out of the city and
24:27they're like it's flooding get into the arena I was like I don't know why they
24:31thought the arena would save anybody because it didn't seem to be
24:33particularly high up you know it certainly wasn't above water level but
24:37when she looked down and her very cool boot was being surrounded by water all
24:40of a sudden I was like that was a cool shot all right then for the arena
24:44sequence I did think during the sequence that that was where I was like man we
24:48need a real Batman because who's gonna you know you got to do some crazy stuff
24:51to take on these henchmen so that was that was crazy that was weird but then
24:56also there was some good fight a couple of good fight sequences with the
24:59henchmen I thought that was good and when Catwoman was in danger Batman used the
25:03adrenaline to go berserker so that he could save her that was fine I mean I
25:07liked those moments I mean I thought they were cool I mean I guess they
25:11obviously did it to have this big third act finale with some more action and some
25:14big bigger set pieces but to me what the brilliance I guess you can see from my
25:18spoiler review here the brilliance of this Batman movie was it subtle moments
25:23right like you know to me an eye movement just moving an eye meant said more to me
25:29sometimes than an actual punch you know hearing someone come out of the shadows
25:34was even more effective so I don't think it I don't know if it necessarily to me
25:39I would have rather dumped the arena sequence and dived more into the reveals
25:43and seen them instead of just having us be told about them I guess that's what I
25:47would have done I would have swapped that out that would have been so much more
25:50interesting to me so let's talk about all these reveals so there's a Joker
25:54reveal yep he's there Barry Keegan I don't know what they did to him he looked
25:58really weird and not like Joker in my opinion the more I thought at first I was
26:02just like don't like that but the more I thought about it I was like I guess this
26:06is the realism of someone who is dumped into a vat of chemicals and their face
26:09misshapen into a smile right I guess that is what he would look like but he
26:13didn't seem to have white skin he didn't seem to have green hair his voice
26:17didn't seem particularly Joker like to me I mean they both were laughing so I
26:21was like I mean they both Joker total told a riddle Riddler laughs along with him I
26:27was like we need clear lines here between our villains this is how Batman
26:31works you know no stealing each other's routines thank you very much so again I
26:36have a lot of faith in Matt Reeves at this point so I'm not ready to dismiss
26:40this Joker but I do think that his reveal was significantly lessened by the
26:46fact that I didn't feel it was Joker but I eventually came to feel that Paul Dano
26:50was Riddler so let's just see what happens but it wasn't a great I mean except for
26:55him giving that riddle about what's more valuable the less you have and it
26:59being friends overall I was like meh all right other third act reveals that Martha
27:05is an Arkham and that her mother killed her father and then killed herself and
27:08that Martha herself had been in insane asylums I'd be interested to know how
27:12Thomas Wayne met her and decided that marrying her was a good idea I was like I
27:16really need to know a little bit more about their relationship right it's like I
27:20can see why the his parents might be like I love your son but really like that
27:25seems like a lot to chew and the fact that no one knew about it these like no
27:31one has known until this reporter came along I'd be like I would think that the
27:35Arkham's having one kill the other and that there's a whole insane asylum in the
27:38city named after them I would think everybody would know about this and this
27:41comes from the Batman earth one comic where it was not a secret that Martha was an
27:45Arkham you know she was from the Arkham family in fact she at one point takes Bruce as a
27:49child to go see her childhood home which is locked up and you know says some weird
27:54stuff about it and you're like yeah that's weird but I would have preferred
27:57that I would have preferred that I I mean I would have liked to have a lot of
28:02flashbacks to explain these things and show them unfold instead of just being
28:06told about them like for instance what about the rest of her family I mean the
28:11Arkham's who's running Arkham Asylum now it's always you know Jeremiah Arkham is
28:14you know it's supposed to be the guy who runs it is that a relative of Martha how does
28:17she know him like what about all that and if she had a mental unless it had been
28:21in mental institutions doesn't she still have to see a psychiatrist would it be
28:24maybe Hugo Strange doesn't she have to keep checking in I mean nobody just gets
28:28immediately better I mean that seems to me like a lifelong situation of care and
28:33keeping an eye out for it and also Bruce would I think have some memory of his
28:37mother being a little off and on that note why would they not talk about the
28:41brilliant thing that they did in Batman earth 1 that kind of explains why Bruce has
28:45made the choices that he has cuz he's a little off and you know that would
28:48explain why someone would decide instead of to become an FBI agent or to run for
28:51mayor himself he's gonna dress as a giant bat and use his money to fight people and
28:56you know in the city I think you know that should be explored and it's there why
29:01not use it that's very frustrating to me and as many of you pointed out the
29:04Wayne cufflinks are not only Wayne but if you turn them over they spell a a for
29:09Arkham Asylum why wasn't that made more clear I just I mean the clip the brief little
29:13clip reel that had been put together by Riddler or the news or a combination of
29:19the two of them I don't remember now I you know I just thought that would that
29:25didn't that didn't do it you know I thought that we could have gotten a lot a
29:28lot more out of that and they lost a lot of great opportunities to explore that
29:32again I would have much preferred that than the sports arena like Batman and crazy
29:38creepy stuff happening in the dark like that I want the stuff that's gonna haunt me and
29:42stick with me although some moments in the arena did then Carmine Falcone I'm
29:47good on Jeffrey Wright's Gordon for releasing that audio to the to the to
29:51the news so that he couldn't get away with it that was pretty good the new you
29:55know that was New York one substituting for Gotham one right with the same anchor
30:00so I thought that was very funny that must have been fun for them to film that but I
30:03liked that I like you know made you know Gotham seem very modern I thought that
30:08was great but then of course the big reveal of the movie is that Carmine
30:12Falcone who it's a famous character Moroni so they actually had not taken down
30:20Moroni's drops they had created their own drug they're like oh he's a drophead and
30:24I'm like hilarious so like instead of taking down Moroni's drop drug organ is
30:29operation in fact Falcone had just you know ratted him out he was the rat ratted out
30:35Moroni take and then secretly taken over his empire for himself and it now
30:41controlled the police and the the DA and the mayor I mean today with all that
30:48we're seeing I mean they won't we almost had a coup in this country I'm not that
30:52surprised I mean they thought like oh they kept saying like this is gonna rock
30:55Gotham to the core no one will ever be the same and I mean honestly I guess that
30:59just speaks to how jaded we are today and also we have social media so you know you
31:04know that's the thing Gordon didn't put it on Twitter right he put I mean he's
31:08lucky the news agreed to write like they could who says Carmine Falcone isn't
31:12running the news but I just you know I just thought it was no big deal
31:17whatsoever I was like whatever you know I guess it was interesting that he said
31:21bring him into the light so I can shoot him that was kind of a cool twist I like
31:24that I thought that was pretty good and I just didn't believe by the way that John
31:28Turturro would do any of this he just didn't seem like that's dark to me you
31:32know I just didn't buy it I thought he was poorly cast then you know the whole
31:37thing with him being Selena's father which I guess was supposed to be a big
31:39surprise but if you know the comics you're like yeah I mean she's like he's
31:43my father and I think probably like 80% of the people in the audience maybe I'm
31:48being maybe not many that many people like no Batman comics but I would bet you
31:51at least 50 or like 50% are like yeah we know you know it's like Batman be like my
31:57parents were killed and we're like okay yeah we know that so I didn't think that
32:02I mean so I that the when writing the movie they should have realized that
32:06would not be a big moment it also made it creepy that he was hitting on her I was
32:10like I'm super creeped out by that you know although it was cool and she was
32:14like hey dad you know I was like oh she got him there that was cool and I wish
32:19they'd had two flashbacks at the beginning of the movie with Carmine Falcone him
32:24talking to Selena's mother at the club you know why do I have to only hear I
32:27would have liked to have seen Celine's mother Selena's mother so like that was
32:32ridiculous and I also would have liked to have seen the situation where he was
32:35saved by Bruce's father in the middle of the night I thought that would have
32:39been great why do I have to just hear about it on the steps of the of the
32:43funeral by the way they faked us out shooting maybe they were gonna show her
32:47at one point but when that when Falcone's lady friend turned around it wasn't
32:54Zoe Kravitz and I was just as surprised as Bruce because we'd seen them
32:57filming the scene when Zoe Kravitz had been on set in that costume then the
33:04reveal that Thomas Wayne had not wanted the information about his wife to get
33:08out so he could not buy the journalist off so he decided and again I'm like how
33:13is this a secret but anyway he was like oh I'm gonna go to Carmine Falcone and see
33:17if he can help me out oh I didn't know he'd kill the journalist come on Thomas
33:22Wayne how dumb are you that to me was ridiculous Alfred's like he had no idea
33:27that he would kill him and I'm like why didn't you tell him because you're
33:30supposed to be someone who has a rough past and has been in the military why
33:33don't you like if you tell someone to shut someone down and quiet them the end
33:38game is to kill them that's obviously what's gonna be done so I that to me
33:42held no what help speaking of water held no water to me as to Thomas Wayne's
33:46innocence I was like maybe that's what he told everyone but there's oh yeah and
33:50Thomas Wayne was like that was also ridiculous Thomas Wayne's like I'm gonna
33:53go tell on you Carmine Falcone I'm like first of all who tells someone they're
33:58gonna go tell on someone right I mean that's just so dumb to me he was I mean
34:02you if you're gonna tell on Carmine Falcone good luck hoping that the police and the
34:07DA aren't already in his pocket but why would you drive there immediately be like
34:11I'm gonna tell on you tomorrow that gives you about 24 hours to take care of me
34:16before I tell anyone don't wait I haven't told anyone yet
34:20telegraphs like that it was very stupid then I had a big problem with this change
34:26to the Batman mythology where you kind of know who the killers are who killed the
34:31Waynes the whole point is that you're not supposed to know because it was just
34:34crime that's why Batman's vengeance can never be realized because he he'll never
34:40actually avenge his parents so he's just trying to you know just fight crime in
34:44general because that's who he blames for his parents murder I'm like you're just
34:49turning him into Huntress where he wants to take care of the mob because we've
34:51basically narrowed it down to Falcone or Moroni that you know I'm you know
34:57Alfred's like if only we knew for sure I don't know why Batman was like who do I
35:00have to go beat the shit out of somebody and find out I mean Batman's also a
35:05criminal I would think they would have some way to find out I mean and also since I
35:09don't think Moroni or Falcone pulled the trigger themselves there's always a
35:13trail that's the whole point it's just it's just a mugging gone wrong there
35:17isn't it's just it ends there you know that guy disappears into the Joe Chill I
35:21didn't I never liked it when they named it Joe Chill and they tried to do this in
35:24the first Batman movie saying that it was Joker and I thought that was horrible
35:28it's a faceless guy who runs into the night and you just never you never see him
35:33again and you never you know the point isn't who was it but the system that
35:37allowed it to happen so I didn't like that I didn't like that change at all I
35:42was like don't like this all right then Peter Sarsgaard oh he was so great I did
35:48I we knew he was in this movie and it's funny that we'd seen the funeral clip but
35:52we I didn't make the connection that was him underneath all that duct tape but he
35:56was very good in the club I thought he did a great job there but why I said I
36:00had he had one great line so when he was being in terror he had to answer the
36:03Riddler I love that he had to wait for Batman to show up that whole thing was
36:06done so well and very realistic to how it would actually go down with the police
36:10having to work with Batman and because the Riddler will ask for Batman
36:14specifically so I love that Batman finally shows up and Sarsgaard's like oh man I'm
36:18really tired of this boy this is not going well I liked when the little police
36:21bot drove up to him and was like you know he's like are you kidding me that was
36:25great but then he had to answer the Riddler's questions and Batman apparently was
36:30allowed to you know help a friend so that was great but then on the second
36:33one there was just a general thing that Riddler alluded to that Sarsgaard had
36:39done as the DA and Batman's like who did you help specifically and I love the
36:44Peter Sarsgaard even in the heat of the moment was like he didn't ask me who I
36:47helped specifically I'm paraphrasing but I just look my whole theater laughed
36:51because it was incredible that Peter Sarsgaard's character at that moment still
36:55had the the sense of mind not to incriminate himself and to give things away
36:59because he was worried about what happened I think not only to him I mean
37:02his family maybe but I think largely to himself that was because you know he
37:07might make it out of that alive you don't know you never know till it's over
37:09but that was just really funny and I think was Gotham in a nutshell that
37:14Gotham was so corrupt that even when someone's pleading for their life they're
37:18like ah you're not gonna get me nice try you're not gonna trip me up there that
37:22was just incredible really well written extremely well acted all right then
37:27Alfred you know this Alfred's exactly out of Batman earth one exactly Jeff
37:32John's fingerprints are all over this and in some ways it's very and very very
37:36well but you know I don't think they did enough I think they didn't do enough to
37:40establish why they did a change to Alfred and if he had a background in
37:45military stuff as they clearly made as they said why did he open up that
37:51envelope to Bruce Wayne I mean he's seen the writing from the Bruce has brought
37:55home so far he knows the Bruce's you know fight you know as after this
37:59Riddler character and the Riddler characters going after high-profile
38:02targets in the city I just I was like he's not gonna open that but he did it
38:07was like absolutely ridiculous I was like you don't have like a controlled
38:10thing down there in the Batcave to open this or wait till Bruce gets home it made
38:13absolutely no sense although I didn't like the addition of that secretary and
38:17that she picked up that was a good twist when Bruce was calling to get Alfred and
38:22she and she said oh I was trying to reach you it's you know it are you know
38:26something bad has happened and they pulled back from the phone and you had
38:29the smoldering apartment and I was like that's awesome that was great I was also
38:33I was like on that poor apartment it's like a historic thing at this point with
38:37all the detail will work in the molding and everything but I liked that
38:41character and I did think the hospital scene with Bruce was very touching when
38:44Bruce said I just can't go through that again of losing someone close I loved it
38:48they might be bringing back Alfred in the comics by the way Damien might be doing it on
38:51Damien he's so great he loves he loves his Pennyworth I love that I think that's
38:56great I miss Alfred in the comics I think killing him was quite stupid all
39:00right so anyway next Catwoman I as I said in my non-spoiler review I felt that
39:05Zoe Kravitz walked right off the comic book page particularly Batman year one she
39:09not only looks like Catwoman but moves like Catwoman she had the right outfits I
39:14loved her pixie cut I loved the nails that were her idea she's just incredible here I
39:20want to point out in the spoiler review I love that the mayor's mistress was her
39:24roommate Anika and that reminded me a lot of Holly I thought that was really
39:28really interesting you know Zoe Kravitz has recently said in some interviews
39:32that she viewed her Catwoman is bisexual and that she was attracted to Anika as
39:37well and I kind of saw that I saw that there especially when Zoe Kravitz speaks on
39:41it I'm like oh yeah I saw notes of that Matt Reeves has said that wasn't his
39:45interpretation but that you know he left it vague and that that could certainly
39:49be seen there I really didn't feel though that Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman had
39:53chemistry with anybody we'll talk about that more in a moment but I just I did
39:57like the Anika stuff because it reminded me very much of Catwoman's relationship
40:02with Holly in the comics so I liked that a lot I thought that was a great thing to
40:05add to her character here I loved that she was a thief I love you know when Batman's
40:10like this is just all been about getting money and she's like Falcone owes me I
40:14thought that was fantastic I thought that it was great I love when she was
40:17cracking the safe I think she did a fantastic fantastic fan even when she
40:21was walking around her apartment in her underwear right out of the comic and
40:24they didn't sexualize it which I appreciate but also I think that one of the
40:29things that makes this movie PG-13 is that they intentionally I think took a lot
40:33of the sexuality out of the movie which you know had an effect on the Batman
40:36Catwoman romantic relationship but that was a choice that they did
40:40just made you know I think that even though they had the mayor having a
40:43mistress it wasn't pretty you know the focus was more on her life in danger
40:47and that she'd been abused you know I just they it was not a particularly sexy
40:52film and you know maybe because but you know that's not where Batman's head is it
40:55right now he's not noticing it so we're not noticing it so I thought you know but
41:00it worked Catwoman just did a fantastic fantastic Zoe Kravitz did a wonderful job as
41:06for the bat cat relationship up until the end when they started to focus more on the
41:10romance loved it loved it so much I thought their meat in the club I had not
41:15seen that clip that had been released I don't know why they released it I
41:18thought it was brilliant that she came in there to serve drinks and to give some
41:22drugs to penguin I thought that was a great way for them to first meet and then
41:26he noticed the boots in the photograph and then he had just cuz you know Batman
41:29notices everything cuz you can see his eyes taking it all in fantastic very very
41:34clever although I'd be like Selena maybe you want to rethink those boots cuz
41:37they're really giving you away I loved the sequence where he has her go
41:41undercover in 44 below with the eye camera and talking to her and how she
41:45uses that and she seems like she's talking to the people in the club but
41:49she's talking to him and his commentary on it that was again one another one of my
41:53and again it's subtle that to me blew the arena scene out of the water and he was
41:57in such as much smaller scale but it was Batman and Catwoman in a nutshell and I
42:02you know had that great technology in it I loved that sequence and we were in the
42:06club and you know I love the club so that was fantastic and then the the role and
42:11then he's like do you she's like do you care what happens to me and then she
42:14thinks he's looking in her eyes but he's actually just checking the camera great
42:17stuff now as for the romance and I you know I didn't even think that moment
42:22there was a romance there I thought it was too cold the way he grabbed her chin I
42:25think it's on both their faults I don't think either one of them played
42:29romance I don't think that Robert Pattinson did I don't think that Zoe Kravitz did it
42:33it was I thought as I said you know a work or sibling relationship between the
42:38two of them which was really well done but I bought them more separate than I
42:42did buy them together Jeffrey Wright loved Jeffrey right here he is Gordon he is
42:49just again right off the comic book page so incredibly well cast I loved him
42:53working with Batman he's not quite commissioner yet you know what it's funny
42:57whenever they have these stories and Gordon isn't commissioner yet and someone
43:00else walks in and they're like hey commish I'm like you're gonna die because I know
43:03that Gordon's gonna be commissioner eventually so I'm like not long for you
43:06buddy and again you know they that commissioner with the rats and that
43:11device I was like thanks for not showing me I'm in my imagination you know just
43:16just like Batman has uses our criminals imagination Matt Reeves had us use our
43:20imagination and I think it was very effective and broadens the audience for
43:24this movie but I just loved Batman and Gordon's relationship I think it said a lot when Gordon's
43:30turned to him and said you're the only one I trust and you're like really that
43:33weird guy who's wearing a bat suit and fighting crime you don't even know who he
43:36actually is that says a lot about Gotham loved it I mean that again it's just
43:40that's Gotham I just absolutely it's like so good I know that Chinatown is an
43:45influence on this movie and I guess you know that's a famous line that's Chinatown
43:48from that movie and I guess you know that's Gotham is like I think very much you
43:52couldn't that could be like a catchphrase for this movie that's Gotham so I loved it I
43:57love the line where Gordon says do you think that cop is moonlighting as a bouncer and Batman
44:03says I think that bouncer is moonlighting as a cop I saw that that was a clip that they released
44:09why would they release that clip I had not seen it I loved that moment in the movie I thought that
44:13was hilarious line and like just the banter was just great between the two of them I loved it
44:18including when Batman's like no guns and Gordon says that's your thing man I loved that I thought
44:24that was so great although I couldn't believe they turned their back on all those drop heads to
44:27explore the orphanage they're like oh it's just some drop heads let's keep going I'd be like they
44:32might work for Riddler watch your six man so that was but I thought that was great I thought the
44:37GCPD sequences were wonderful I loved that one was Martinez was really mean to Batman but was very
44:43nice to Bruce Wayne I was great stuff I like the GCPD I think the GCPD are really cool characters and you
44:49know Batman has a complicated relationship with them as we all know now that that was cap captured
44:54perfectly in this movie then penguin Wow so funny he was so funny oh Colin Farrell I never I still
45:03can't believe that's him under all that he truly transformed and became a different character
45:07like with Jared Leto in House of Gucci I can't believe how long I'm sorry I got distracted for a
45:12minute 47 minutes I told I mean we're going a little longer but what a spoiler review I love this movie as I
45:18told you I just love it so much but I always saw Jared Leto underneath all that latex I mean I was
45:24like impressed you know but I knew it was Jared Leto under there with Colin Farrell here it's just a
45:30totally different person and it's an amazing performance I I thought he at first I thought
45:35he wasn't didn't look very much like penguin but I kind of think that he does as the movie went along I
45:39I was like oh that's like a very realistic take on penguin but I was not prepared for how funny he was I
45:44laughed so hard when Batman said something when he was leaving with the photos and he said something
45:49about the mayor and penguin looks at the pics and he's like oh is that them oh is that the mayor oh
45:53it was great the way he did that he made Batman really lose his temper but I laughed so hard I
45:58thought that was great I love when he laughed at Gordon and Batman when they when they took him in after
46:03the car chase and he was like you guys think you're such great detectives you're so stupid even I figured
46:07that out it was just wonderful he was he was a bigger-than-life character he you know he didn't
46:13have a flashy costume he wasn't you know Colin Farrell said he wanted to have a cigarette or a
46:18cigar and they wouldn't let him but he he was so bigger in life than life he qualified as a Batman rogue
46:24he was just great and I can't wait to see that character evolve but I thought he was just wonderful so
