A fast-moving fire that tore through several high-rise buildings in a Hong Kong apartment complex has killed at least 55 people, with many residents still missing. Rescuers pulled an elderly man alive from a smouldering block as parts of the complex continued to burn 24 hours later. The buildings, home to many elderly residents, were under renovation and covered in bamboo scaffolding. Three construction workers have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

00:00Hong Kong's skyline is still scarred by flames as a massive high-rise inferno continues to burn
00:18more than 20 hours after it first erupted. What began as a small fire on bamboo scaffolding
00:26has become Hong Kong's deadliest blaze in more than 60 years. At least 44 people are confirmed
00:33dead and more than 270 are reported missing. Thousands of residents have fled their homes,
00:40many now sleeping and crowded evacuation shelters. Drone footage and eyewitness video show entire
00:48towers engulfed, flames ripping through the green construction netting and leaping from building to
00:56building as thick black smoke pours into the sky. More than 760 firefighters have been deployed
01:03since Wednesday afternoon, battling flames that refused to die even as night fell and visibility dropped.
01:10I do not care for the survivors. I do not care for the survivors and the survivors.

02:47this is a defining display because the fire is not caring for farmers

03:01the fire to the other side and the water will not be allowed to call it to the fire
03:07There is this situation
03:09For many, the fire seemed controllable at first, until it wasn't.
03:39As the hours dragged on, the fire kept spreading through the building's vertical shafts and
03:49exterior scaffolding, making it nearly impossible for crews to stop it from moving upwards.
03:55And for one family, the danger is painfully personal.
03:59As firefighters continue mopping up operations and searching for survivors, volunteers across
04:05Hong Kong are rushing to help.
04:08Wang Foote Court, where the towers still smolder, ordinary citizens have formed human chains,
04:14moving box after box of donated supplies.
04:17The most important thing is that the police have told us that the police need to be
04:22dirty.
04:23Because the police need to be dirty, so we hope that the police need to be dirty.
04:28It's very exciting that the people of Hong Kong's intelligence know that the police are
04:33afraid of it.
04:34The fire is the city's worst since 1962, when another blaze, also in a dense urban area,
04:51killed 44 people.
04:53This tragedy matches that toll and authorities fear the number could climb much higher.
04:59With more than 270 still unaccounted for, rescue teams warn that many apartments remain inaccessible,
05:06too unstable or too hot to enter safely.
05:10As dawn approaches, the flames continue to smolder.
05:15Families wait for news.
05:17Volunteers hand out water, masks, towels.
05:20And a grieving city braces itself for what rescuers may find when they finally reach the
05:25upper floors.
