38:53Oh, the snap's just for theatrics.
39:01Magicians call it the prestige.
39:09So this is a performance.
39:15Why do you need the telemasca?
39:18Why do you need her?
39:23Oh, God, please.
39:25I'm the prisoner guilty of his sins,
39:28the inmate who loves his jailer,
39:30the rebellious teenager who looks up to his parents
39:33because they need purpose in life,
39:35which is a terrible burden when your life is forever.
39:39You are a fool.
39:41A youthful idiot with a parlor trick you can't even control.
39:48And you, you're tired of all this.
39:53It's not fun anymore.
39:55How are you doing that?
39:57You turned against your own kind.
39:59You betrayed them.
40:00You hate yourself for that.
40:02The sun is finally down.
40:07It's very dangerous to have a gift
40:09yet not understand its power.
40:11Your mind is in two-way street.
40:23Fuck.
40:30How'd I get out here?
40:31You opened the window.
40:32You made me do it!
40:34I merely offered you a suggestion.
40:36A suggestion that you were open to.
40:38Now take one itty-bitty step forward.
40:49Trust me, or resist me.
40:58You think you came here to see a vampire?
41:01You're here for my approval.
41:03Congratulations.
41:04I see why she's so fond of you.
41:06For a mortal, you are remarkable.
41:10But hear me well, friend.
41:12My previous associates won't appreciate you as I do.
41:16They won't play nice.
41:18They will try to bend you and mold you.
41:22And take you.
41:24Are you coming?
41:26They're lying to you.
41:27The dawn of a new day.
41:37Guy.
41:40They're lying to you.
41:48The dawn of a new day.
41:52Guy.
41:55What's wrong?
42:01You do realize you're gonna get that poor boy killed.
42:10Guy.
42:14Guy.
42:15Please.
42:16What if I died up there?
42:19What if I died?
42:20There's nothing he could throw at you that you wouldn't throw right back at him.
42:23You're that gifted.
42:24Oh, yeah, right. I'm so gifted that he had me dangling from a ledge.
42:28When you spoke to him privately, what did you feel?
42:31That he was innately good or bad?
42:37I don't know.
42:41And what of me?
42:46You?
42:50You're both.
42:56Wait.
42:57Guy, I'm sorry for everything, for all of it.
42:59It's a dangerous game. I can't blame you for walking away, in fact.
43:05Perhaps you should.
43:10Oh, my God.
43:11Backer.
43:12You're just a friend.
43:35They spring in your ears.
43:38They're lying to you.
43:39They don't trust me or resist me.
43:44They won't play nice.
43:46They'll try to bend you and mold you and take you.
44:09You're a good one.
44:16You're a good one.
44:17To be honest, how do I let you settle in?
44:21I'm a good one.
44:24I've been going all the way that my son is so good,
44:26and I'm not going to lose my mind.
44:28I'm not going to lose my mind.
44:30I'm going to lose my mind.
44:32The room concussed
45:01and then Louie's voice.
45:05Daniel, Daniel, I rose from my chair,
45:09dust and damage in all directions,
45:11shuffling to the living room to see the plane,
45:14which was merely a body,
45:16crumpled below a fissured wall.
45:19Armand avoiding the eyes of Louie,
45:21who stood over him like a tidal wave,
45:25pondering its descent.
45:28Yeah.
45:31Okay, so who wants my hand in their jacket?
45:38Two Willa with an A.
45:46Hi.
45:47Hi.
45:51Phase 227.
45:52Hey, sweetheart.
46:20What can I say, sweetheart, in a bookstore these days?
46:24Yeah.
46:25Just make a smile.
46:27Just make a smile.
46:27Step into the light.
46:40What do you want?
46:51Phase 227.
46:54Anna Lemus.
46:57What about Anna Lemus?
46:58She was my mother.
46:59Like I give a shit.
47:01You wrote about her in your fucking book.
47:03I wrote about a vampire.
47:05Your mother was a footnote.
47:06What'd you know about her?
47:07Only what I was told.
47:10What do you know about her?
47:12Only what I was told.
47:13That she was an addict who died when I was nine.
47:15Talk about the 752.
47:21Stop it!
47:22I have a thing about people fishing around in my head
47:24without asking first.
47:28I didn't write page 227.
47:31They did.
47:33Tell them, ask her.
47:34What?
47:35Tell them, ask her.
47:36Oh, wait.
47:37Did you mean the tell-a-masker?
47:40You don't think they're watching right now?
47:43Come on, man.
47:45You're a clairvoyant.
47:46Then why would they put my mother's name in your book?
47:49I don't know.
47:50What's 752?
47:55Uh, 749 plus 3.
47:58The monthly payment on a new Prius.
48:02Something to do with your mom.
48:07They're using you, kid.
48:10Pull out your phone.
48:13I don't like being rewritten.
48:14I did some digging.
48:23Look closely.
48:25Was everyone wearing Lululemon when you were nine?
48:31She's alive.
48:32Tomorrow morning, you'll wake up and convince yourself
48:35that any good son would want to save his mother.
48:39Don't.
48:40And if I did want it,
48:44why would I start?
48:51Ask them.
48:54Maybe I will.
48:58Now get out of here.
49:00Before I do something, I'll regret.
49:02I'll regret.
49:32If I did something, I'll regret.
49:33If I did something, I'll regret.
49:34If I did something, I'll regret.
49:35If I did something, I'll regret.
49:36If I did something, I'll regret.
49:37If I did something, I'll regret.
49:38If I did something, I'll regret.
49:39If I did something, I'll regret.
49:40If I did something, I'll regret.
49:41If I did something, I'll regret.
49:42If I did something, I'll regret.
49:43If I did something, I'll regret.
49:44If I did something, I'll regret.
49:45If I did something, I'll regret.
49:46If I did something, I'll regret.
49:47If I did something, I'll regret.
49:48If I did something, I'll regret.
49:49If I did something, I'll regret.
49:50I'll regret.
49:51If I did something, I'll regret.
52:29They stole my life.
52:31They took my mother.
52:33You and I could have some fun together.
52:35We're a private organization that has been around a long time.
52:44We don't operate for profit, but we're extremely well-funded.
52:47We chronicle historical notes and keep tabs on certain groups.
52:52We attempt to do good by protecting the equilibrium of society.
52:58Which in Latin means animal mask.
53:02I prefer to look at it like MI6 or CIA where they've got a necessary job to do and they're
53:20not afraid to get their hands dirty and sometimes you might want to look away.
53:24They are a firewall between the natural world and the supernatural world and that they sort
53:29of keep everything in check.
53:31Much of the duties of being in the Talamasca are very close to being the duties of a spy.
53:38The Talamasca organization, they give us insight into what vampires and what witches are.
53:45In episode one, what we're trying to do is glue this series as much as we can into the rest of the Anne Rice universe and signify that this is not happening in a vacuum.
53:59Why in the world would you publish this?
54:02It's a tell-all in a way.
54:04And who allowed this?
54:06These are not worlds that are separate and apart and they do cross over sometimes.
54:09I think we're all under the same tent and I think all these vampires can coexist in their uniqueness.
54:14I wrote about a vampire.
54:15Your mother was a footnote.
54:17What did you know about her?
54:18Only what I was told.
54:20What do you know about her?
54:21Only what I was told.
54:22That she was an addict who died when I was nine.
54:29Well in episode one, we knew that a macro of it, if you will, was going to be introducing Guy in the beginning of his recruitment into Talamasca.
54:39But you wanted to answer the question of why now?
54:42The idea that Soledad Marcel would need to be replaced.
54:48This is the moment when Revenants and Jasper catch up for Soledad.
54:53The first time you see Jasper, he steps out of a car and he's got a little clicker.
55:00Father, forgive me.
55:01She just doesn't have any choice but to step in front of a train and call it a day really.
55:09And I love that that's all you find out right there.
55:15Who is this guy?
55:16Can I ask you something else?
55:17Yes.
55:18So I play Guy Anatole, who is a recent graduate from college who's living in New York City.
55:32It's almost like you heard me or something strange.
55:38When we first meet him, I mean, he thinks that he's got something wrong with him.
55:41You didn't fit in.
55:42The other kids called you a freak.
55:45He's at that age where you have a whole lot of questions.
55:48Who am I?
55:49What's my journey?
55:50Where am I going?
55:51Something I could help you with?
55:52A moment of your time.
55:57It's almost impossible to talk about Helen without talking about the Talamasca because it's her entire life.
56:05Talamasca is a cult of sorts.
56:07People are brought in and they never leave.
56:09What's this?
56:10Our organization.
56:11He's approached by Helen and she tells him that his entire life has been a lie and that everything he seems to see as true is BS.
56:19It's a gift, not a curse, sweetie.
56:22There's no truth to what he sees.
56:24So him going into this world, it's all with skepticism.
56:27We believe your life's true purpose lies with us.
56:30When he decides to show up and hear her out for the $5,000, a lot of that scene is all the questions that I ask.
56:40You're a think tank.
56:41In a way, yes and another no.
56:42Sometimes knowing what they aren't helps illuminate what they are.
56:46You're a spy.
56:47No.
56:48CIA.
56:49MI6.
56:50Helen, an approaching guy, knows that she can't just come in with all of it.
56:55If I want you to know something, you will.
56:57And the fact that she's essentially curated his life is a shock to the system for him.
57:03How long have you been involved with my life?
57:05Since you were orphaned.
57:06Helen has a long history with Guy that we're not aware of at first.
57:11For this to work, must work for both of us.
57:15Before you decide, I'd like you to meet someone.
57:18I came up with the concept of which he has to meet a vampire before he signs up.
57:27He has to know that world exists for him to believe in it, and he has to believe in it to join up with it.
57:32Well, you guys have wasted a lot of time and money because there's a problem.
57:35Which is?
57:36I don't believe in witches, vampires, ghosts, or demons.
57:39Oh, nobody does.
57:41Until they meet one.
57:43I play a character named Burton.
57:46I'm a vampire.
57:47Everyone's going to one.
57:49Picture's up.
57:50The day that we shot with Jason Shortsman was a seminal day for me because the way he encapsulated that character seemed to incorporate everything for me that's magical about the show.
58:03Often John Lee will say, can I show you the bad version of what I'm thinking?
58:07And it's like better than you could possibly do.
58:09But you have to pretend like, yeah, it's better than my daughter.
58:12Ah, look who's here.
58:13Yeah, I'll do a little different.
58:14But it's really because you can't do what he just did because it was too good.
58:18Darling!
58:20My dear, I've missed you.
58:23Of course you have.
58:24It's been too long.
58:25I think he's lonely and I think he loves the attention and he loves being the center of attention.
58:31And so I think he dresses up and I think part of that is he's playing into the trope a little bit of there's an expectation of what a vampire looks like.
58:37I'm going to give him that.
58:38As if somehow I'm what's wrong with the world.
58:41Hey, fella.
58:42Fuck!
58:43It isn't really until Burton starts shape-shifting and he ends up outside on the 50th floor.
58:52You think you came here to see a vampire?
58:55You're here for my approval.
58:57I really go, oh, this is legitimate.
59:01Or I'm losing my mind.
59:03It's forever and super hard to defend it.
