00:00Who said it up?
00:08Tell you the truth about this.
00:14Everybody else is going to take your view.
00:25Can we get a second barrier?
00:27What do you got?
00:28Stop, stop, stop.
00:30Oh, he's through.
00:32Get him, get him.
00:34This is a case that on its face
00:37looks fairly obvious
00:42as to who the shooter is.
00:47But what actually happened
00:50was so incredibly shocking
00:52that even detectives
00:55and seasoned journalists
00:57couldn't believe it.
00:59Who was behind this series of attacks
01:04of a neighborhood icon?
01:07He was punched.
01:09He was shot multiple times.
01:11Did he get a hood on?
01:12Yes.
01:13And a mask.
01:15He was stabbed seven times.
01:16I thought the car was here.
01:17The entire family was under attack.
01:19It was brutal and crazy and unanswerable.
01:25Somebody got shot in the parking lot.
01:27He's dead.
01:28We had looked at the mafia.
01:31We had looked at the mafia.
01:32Now, we don't know if it's not coming from us.
01:36There is somebody behind the scenes
01:39pulling the strings.
01:41And that begs the question.
01:43we don't look at him.
01:56We could stop doing that.
01:57We did once...
02:02I don't know.
02:02No...
02:03We did it.
02:05We did this man!
02:05in september 2017 officers respond to an incident the incident was recorded
02:22the victim of the crime was sylvester zatola commonly known as sally daz he was 70 years old
02:35he was merely standing outside when the video showed a male walk up to mr zatola engage him in
02:42a short conversation and basically asked him about employment sally daz says no there's no
02:48employment around here and he had turned around and started punching him several times and then
02:56all of a sudden he just started viciously beating him right to the ground
02:59he had some bruising and he had a broken rib it's heartless
03:08zatola tells police that the perpetrator was an african-american male didn't really know the age
03:21so it's a pretty basic description for a suspect so the detectives really didn't have anything kind
03:28to go on in this case who's walking up to an elderly gentleman you know and beating him like that
03:33zatola's backstory is interesting he was a guy who was also known in the community as
03:44a reputable businessman and a very successful businessman at that and his business was real
03:50estate eventually amassing more than 40 million dollars of primarily residential buildings throughout
04:00new york city his wife died years ago so essentially he became a single father to his three children he had
04:10two boys and one girl deborah the daughter his eldest son salvatore and his younger son was anthony
04:21and also a plethora of grandchildren he would tell anybody who asked that his family was the most important
04:30thing in the world to him in fact his two sons were brought in to run portions of his business
04:37he was a fixture of that community he had been a supporter you know of the police and helped the
04:45precinct out a lot during his lifetime with security cameras you know outside his residence supplying video
04:51to the police and detectives for crimes that occur in and around the area he was like the godfather of
04:57that community it has been widely said that he was like santa claus without a beard he was a jolly old
05:02fellow he would be the type of guy who would wave to kids on the street corner everybody knew him so
05:10why is someone going after him a really a gem of the community and we had a rash of old people getting
05:17sucked sucker punched you know throughout you know uh new york city during that time as well so is it as
05:23someone who's following a trend it didn't look like it was a full attempt you know of his life
05:27other than an assault or maybe a possible attempted robbery
05:42november 2017 sally daz he comes into the precinct speaks to the desk officer telling him he was driving
05:49on the expressway and in front of him and a perpetrator wearing a mask gets out with a firearm
05:54and starts threatening him and tells the first offer he sees that somebody is either trying to carjack
05:59him or kidnap him because you know what else would there be but they do an area canvas which shows up
06:06negative for the perpetrator in the area at this time the two incidents are considered separate even
06:14though it's our same victim because it's a description sally daz gave it's very vague really at this point
06:21both of these incidents are really like a dead end there's no other investigative information
06:26and all leads are exhausted
06:33so a little over a month later 9-1-1 is called for a break-in at the zatola residence
06:38so when the officers respond to mrs zatola's home they find him
06:41he's bleeding profusely on the ground he's been stabbed multiple times and slashed across the neck
06:56somehow miraculously he survived this brutal attack
07:01he tells detectives the little bit that he knew that he's at home the next thing he knows there's a group
07:15of men in there
07:20and there wasn't small talk there wasn't a lot of threats or anything like that
07:25that they went right after
07:35and he didn't get any great physical description with the exception of he believed
07:40that these were predominantly african-american men
07:43it doesn't appear that there's any fourth entry there's a code to get in how did he have that code
07:57and number two zatola has surveillance camera in his property but guess what
08:05there was no surveillance tape from that incident
08:12they stole the home video surveillance so this starts looking to us is this might be an inside job
08:19someone's definitely trying to kill this guy but wait a minute why did they want to kill him
08:26hi my name is frank damatio and i know sally true to the vending uh business are there things that
08:37just stays amongst the family and just don't share mob world family they're not gonna tell nobody
08:45nothing the less people know the better it is because the less people got killed
08:48what do you know about sally that's you know all you know about sally so he was a good guy
09:00he was affiliated with the bananas he had friends in in for protection i was with a different family
09:06but that's how we got to know him at all because he was uh in that area was a was a banana area so
09:14that's why uh we knew he had a friend up there in new york city there's five major crime families
09:23and the bananas really took a big chunk of the bronx area many people don't walk around with
09:32the name tag that says i'm in bed with a crime family that's just not how it works
09:38it's not how it works zetola was considered an associate of the banana family
09:46sally himself wasn't in the mafia but he had enough friends and a banana cool so what makes
09:52you a mobster because you you you you got a friend that's a mobster to be able to do that world doesn't
09:58make him a gangster not everybody i think because you know somebody you're a gangster it doesn't work
10:03that way only in maybe on tv or something like that or or in the real world no if you're a moron
10:11you're a moron that knows a gangster
10:15this guy was a legitimate businessman on real estate and then he was involved with joker poker games
10:22that's how he got started which is a big business
10:24so joker poker is an extremely popular video gaming machine that is sold to and placed in
10:40social clubs and it is very very profitable because there's a lot of money in it
10:48that's not legal no it's not legal you can bring in millions you know yearly so and it's unrecorded
10:57it can be so lucrative i know guys got tons and tons and tons of money by doing that vending
11:03like i said it's all under the table so
11:07so sally dad had joker poker machines which he would run anywhere from a basement apartment building to the
11:13back of the bodega to numerous different commercial locations where they have secret spots in the back
11:20the expectation of sally dad's was to bring food to the you know bring food to the family
11:25that's kind of like how they put it is bringing money kicking money up uh to the banana crime family
11:31to help support the banana crime family so at this point the mafia someone trying to whack him and bump
11:39him off from his own organization from one of the other families you know to gain all his profits
11:45and take over those joker poker machines or possibly even going into his real estate and trying to bump
11:50him out of real estate now we don't know for not coming from us you know we couldn't come up from
11:56but i don't want to take him out or some other family would try to move in on him we don't know they
12:01don't tell us so several months go by since the third incident he's off the grid sally lay low which
12:16is what you're supposed to do not being flashy he doesn't stay at the house anymore he has a separate
12:21apartment he really buttoned up his inner circle and that included his kids his grandkids and a couple of
12:31mob associates that he does most of his business with so i i know the bananas they would reach out
12:38in the street and see if we knew anything about it or anybody could find anything about it and they
12:42didn't that's what it threw everybody off at this point it's becoming urgent that if law enforcement
12:51doesn't figure out who is targeting this elderly man he will end up dead
13:07one day in june 2018 mr zetola is walking around in another section of the bronx he's been in hiding
13:21finding that if law enforcement is in hiding so it's not being shitty but i can't stop
13:26for a few years ago
13:27so it's a project that i can't stop working but i'm telling you because they're probably about it
13:28but they don't know if it's a project that allows us to do this to help us to find a a policy that
13:30you can't find a policy that will reach out to us right away
13:32you can't get it at the place that will be one of us to have a policy that will be the first
13:33let's look at this point they will be an opportunity to think about thing
13:35and i'm putting it up and i'm putting it up and i'm putting it up and i'm putting it up
13:36and i'm putting ourнова i'm getting riddolk
13:36and i'm putting it up and i'm looking at a policy that is where i'm putting it up i'm reading it up but you can't
13:36some approaches with a hoodie
13:46on this day Zatola's confronted outside of this new location somebody puts a gun into his face
14:05is going to shoot him at point-blank range and kill him no doubt now luckily for Sally Daz the gun jams
14:13and Sally Daz has his own firearm on him and fires it at the fleeing perpetrator
14:20so when the police arrive you know the first thing they do is they see Sally Daz and his son Anthony
14:30Zatola yes I always turn around because I always think there's a car up there you follow me so I
14:46didn't see no car I turned around I see a black guy he you know he walks across the street that way
14:56mm-hmm and he starts coming over to me like this okay and he had a hood on yes and a mask so after
15:03this attempt you know Mrs. Zatola's kids Deborah Salvatore and Anthony they're all up in arms about
15:10what happened but at this point what's going through the detective's minds is he's relocated
15:25people who are behind this how do they know where he is right and that's what makes this attack in June
15:35that much more brutal and crazy and unanswerable because he's in a location where nobody is supposed
15:46to know where he is so what did you see when you saw him with a firearm what did you do
15:53he was returning fire you know to the perpetrator so in self-defense but he has an illegal firearm on
16:11him how many shots did you fire one and do you have a pistol permit no so this is interesting he ends up
16:17getting arrested for illegal gun possession they should be checking all these cameras so listen I
16:28can't I can't blame Sally to hats for carrying a firearm is it illegal yes is he getting arrested for it
16:33yes do I think a grand jury will ever indict him you know no why because these four attempts on his life
16:41but um the law is law
16:44so I'm looking for two male blacks
16:51oh there's a girl oh he's showing the crew something okay
16:54when you're talking about
16:55yeah
17:08go go go
17:10get on get on
17:16yeah come on you're still there
17:23you
17:25you
17:27you
17:29you
17:31you
17:33you
17:35you
17:37you
18:01really what happens is after this fourth incident the perpetrator for that incident ends up getting
18:07arrested a little while later in Manhattan for a criminal possession of a weapon because
18:11he has that illegal firearm
18:12I got the gun I got the gun
18:14you got the gun
18:14and where was the gun drawn the gun was right he I saw him throw it over here
18:18okay yeah
18:21the problem is in the Bronx we don't get that information that the arrest is made
18:26the arrest happened in Manhattan and the attempted shooting was in the Bronx and both shootings and gun arrests happen all the time in New York City
18:36so neither really warrants any kind of city-wide action so neither really warrants any kind of city-wide action and so both jurisdictions are left in the dark about what the other had
18:43and I don't think anybody in law enforcement thought that these were the same group of perpetrators or at the very least the same group behind the planning of this
18:57at this point in the investigation now we start pulling jail phone calls to see who's calling
19:07talking to Mr. Zatola to see if they have any idea who it is or is it them
19:11Mr. Zatola had very strong ties with Vinny and Vinny Bassiano was the head of the Bonanno family
19:22and not only were they really close friends they were also really close business associates
19:30Vinny he's actually in jail during this whole incident
19:33and the sons had approached him with a phone call to see even if the mafia is involved with this
19:41Vinny they think we know who these people are i'm like we have no idea we don't have anybody
19:46and Vinny gorgeous basically said right off the mark the crime families have no involvement with
19:52this this is something coming from outside there's nobody there you bother they should push you through
19:56this bullshit man come on man your father's a good person your father's the salt of the earth
20:01the salt of the earth he helped out everybody you know what i mean i don't know who's got this problem
20:05against them and Vinny loved Sally Daz and for years contributed to the family that's not
20:11somebody who they would want to get rid of and if it was you know another mafia organization another
20:23one of those five families you know Vinny gorgeous probably would have said something but we got nothing
20:28one day in july zetola's family vehicle stops and parks at the zetola family compound
20:56but it wasn't sal senior who got out of the car it was his son sal jr and all of a sudden
21:08somebody was targeting what appeared to be his entire family
21:27sal jr is shot multiple times
21:30it's rolling around on the ground it's a gruesome crime again in broad daylight it was a life
21:40threatening wound you know and he was rushed to the hospital and lucky for him it was non-fatal
21:46and he survived it it was a big news we heard about it when it happened we found it strange
21:54it found it strange because the shooter was strange this guy's half running looking for him trying to
22:04shoot him i said that's how you do it as somebody who covered this case the mob gets it done on the
22:12first try and this was a case where it was almost like a bunch of bumbling idiots trying to kill
22:22kill somebody but always failing it was so just unprofessional you know the whole thing you know
22:28i'll take you three times go kill somebody takes your two minutes you get up close and kill the guy
22:34you know what's it mistaken identity i think it was yeah 100 do you think this is the real target here
22:45that day yeah yes definitely
22:52so when i look at this incident you know a lot of people say maybe it's mistaken identity right
22:58he gets out and the perpetrator comes up and starts shooting at him
23:02maybe he mistakes that it's his dad i never really looked at it that way the way i looked at it as is
23:07hey listen they're going after sally dads they can't get him right what's the next thing likely
23:13to do let's go after a family you know like they want his business they go after the kid too
23:17what this attack showed law enforcement was that it wasn't just the elder zetola
23:29the entire family was under attack and that begs the question who wants this entire
23:40family dead there are no leads cops aren't close to a suspect
23:47and everybody is waiting for the next shoe to drop
24:04i was a stringer a freelance reporter for the new york daily news the guy that goes to the scene to
24:11cover a story in person if it's a crime scene talk to people go to court talk to the cops things of that
24:20nature so that day the editor says well you might regret this but i have an assignment for you
24:30i'm working on a normal shift salvatore was done recovering and we get the call that there's a
24:37homicide over at the mcdonald's on webster avenue it's a kind of busy corridor in west bronx not a
24:46nice place to be honest with you fire medical hi okay can you send me down the i'm gonna get shot in
24:52the parking lot somebody got shot yeah anybody know who shot him no the crime scene at mcdonald's and it
25:00was a an acura suv maroon collared car just next to the mcdonald's takeout window first breathing
25:10oh well to be honest with you i'm inside i'm one of the managers of mcdonald's and i was taking a
25:14order when i see the food from the shot i got okay i don't know this man i was about to give him the
25:21food when everything happened anybody got a description of the person you know what he shot at
25:26all we know all we know is somebody but we're just taking care of customers somebody just right
25:30to the car and shot at us while we're in route they tell us right away that it's sally daz
25:38and someone had shot and killed him in the drive-through at the mcdonald's so he's in the in the car
25:44yes he's done
25:50as a department we have the duty to protect our citizens so when you turn around and you fail at it
25:56yeah you get emotional about it and you want to go out and find out who the murderer is
26:03when we get there i'm brought to the rear of the mcdonald's it appeared that the the vehicle is
26:09pressed up against the building where the call box is mr zatola is slumped on the steering wheel
26:17there's a fence around the mcdonald's perimeter and there's a big hole in the fence
26:22and as i learned the suspected killer at that time snuck into that hole
26:31the victim zatola is in his car and he's driving up to the drive-in window and he orders a coffee
26:39and he's boxed in there's a car in front of him and there's a car behind him so i can't move that's
26:45kind of like a funnel right there we're always taught as police officers don't drive through
26:49drive-throughs don't go through why because of bottlenecks and now all of a sudden you're a target
26:55and so the killer when he gets close
26:59he just fires the shots and he hits him in the back and in the chest
27:04and we're shocked at that you know we're shocked at why why i always thought they were gonna rob him
27:13that's so we could shake him down and rob him you know and it just escalated to him getting killed
27:19got killed
27:24first thing i noticed walking around the vehicle was the cluster of bullet holes in the side window
27:29there was a very tight cluster so the person who turned around and fired this weapon had a very tight
27:37grouping which means he didn't just fire a weapon haphazardly into the vehicle hoping to strike he
27:44fired that weapon and those bullets through that vehicle and struck him with precision so that tells me
27:51you know that the shooter has used the firearm before that he's proficient with it and that he can
27:58stay on target even during a stressful situation like that so i started asking myself out of all
28:06these other attempts i can see a level of professionalism has increased and i kind of felt
28:14that this could be a different person from the last couple of attempts
28:17one of the other detectives interviewed the 911 caller he looks young he looks like a black kid
28:28but she took cover and wasn't able to see his face but he had retreated back up the hill
28:33a few days later i covered the the funeral the church was packed there were like maybe at least 300
28:46people in there packed and there was this beautiful photo of zotola and i'm just looking at him look at
28:55him it's like it's like it's like my grandpa you know it could be my grandpa deborah and sal jr
29:04and anthony all gave touching eulogies about what this man meant to them and to this community
29:13they were devastated at the news that they had lost the man that they were closest to in their lives
29:19debbie the daughter i remember her in tears anthony too had some very nice words about his father
29:28it was like you were a wise man you were strong and he would say you taught me everything in life
29:35i need to make you proud like i will do all i can not to disappoint the family you know my brother
29:42my sister especially you it was very touching there's something so mundane about all of this
29:50right you're just ordering a coffee you're just like an average joe ordering a coffee and he loved
29:55to get his coffee there and that was his last coffee i don't believe in coincidences so i started
30:02asking myself okay how do they know where he is are they following him the vehicle ends up getting
30:10removed to really get processed we go over the entire vehicle they go from top to bottom you know from
30:19the from the front to the back and one of the things that we end up coming up with is a tracker on the
30:25vehicle a gps device that is in the wheel well it answers some questions like wow right that's how
30:34they've been tracking them and that's how they got them here so at this point this is like the real
30:39big solid piece of evidence that we had that could possibly bring us you know to a perpetrator i know
30:45how these things work and i know that this thing is talking to something so it's going to be talking
30:50to a cell phone or to some other device that's going to be able to be tracked
30:57we'd sent it to the lab and to get it broken down
31:01so once we start receiving that information back
31:05what do i do just like i have kids every time they get a new toy they want to play with it
31:13usually the first thing that they'll do is they'll activate this device near their home
31:19so i look at the first thing that's on that line of where it is and that leads me to topping avenue in the
31:24bronx is less than a half a mile from the crime scene at the mcdonald's so then i turn around and
31:33i start my video canvas i go up and down topping avenue and i walk into this one building and i go
31:39and i start downloading video and reviewing video and i see the gps device being used looks like being
31:47tested by two males out in front of the address and all my other attempts they're master hooded
31:53but these guys are standing right out in plain view and i can see exactly who they are
32:03these aren't your mafia type
32:07at the same time a bloods member named ron kaby who was arrested in manhattan a few months earlier for
32:14discarding that firearm came forward and said to the police
32:20i've been seeing all these headlines i've been hearing all of this about the zatola murder
32:25i have information that you're going to want to know he feels that he's going to be wrapped up
32:31in this whole thing and he wants to get ahead of it and he wants to cut a deal and give up who
32:36everybody is he tells them that he was offered ten thousand dollars from a blood's associate to kill
32:46an older man he was given intimate details about the person that he was going after from security codes
32:58to where surveillance cameras were located in the residences to routines times of day that the
33:08victim might be home and when he went to shoot and kill an elderly man his gun jam
33:16now the light bulbs are going off okay now it's a murder for hire case and the people who are
33:25outside using that gps device they're just hired hitmen who's going out and employing them that's
33:32what i want to find out but ron kb does not know who the handler is he doesn't know who the mastermind
33:39behind this whole thing is he just knows that they were hired to kill sylvester zettola but ron kb tells
33:46us the names of the people using the gps that was used to murder sally datz that's person shelton
33:57and that's hyman ross
33:58and that's why i'm giving you an opportunity to kind of explain what happened that day
34:07explain what why don't you tell us i don't have nothing to explain
34:16we established probable cause and now we're turning around we're arresting person shelton
34:20at his residence in brooklyn
34:22we tend to imagine killers of mobsters as just looking the way the mobster look but bushon shelton
34:31is just a regular guy from brooklyn went to college in the bronx i remember looking at shelton's
34:41linkedin page and i was thinking oh this is just like an average guy when we do the search of his
34:47residence we find a firearm which is not part of our crime but we also find cell phones sean
34:56shelton's cell phone revealed text messages between he and somebody else speaking in movie terms and movie
35:07vernacular for example shelton was referring to himself as the director
35:14and shortly after the murder was done he texted something to the effect of the movie is shot or the
35:24movie is over he's on code words about the murder and we start seeing all the messages that were going
35:33back and forth to an unknown number so that phone number is now submitted now they're going to find
35:40out in the subscriber information on who owns that phone and when i get that phone call it was probably
35:47one of the best phone calls i've ever gotten in my life it was the wow moment of this entire case
35:56and probably in my career as well to find out that his own son anthony zatola organized the murder of his
36:03father i was like wait anthony the guy the son was at the grieving at the funeral and just thought like
36:15who knew i think anybody covering this case knew that there was a part of this that was an inside job
36:23of some sort everything started making sense i mean he knew where his father was all the time
36:39he knew that there was video cameras inside the residence he knew the code to get into the back of his
36:45house and through his kitchen he knew all that it's very very rare that organized crime will bring in
36:53somebody from the outside somebody from a street gang to do their dirty work that was like the car was
37:03but anthony had to go outside of their circle bushon shelton he's the guy or the subcontractor where
37:12you go to and you say i need this this and this and then he finds the people to do the job and who
37:17knew how to pull off violent attacks one thing i can say is i had a feeling you were coming when i don't
37:27know but i can thank you that it was after father's day and it was after all my kids breakfast anthony was
37:33arrested the day after father's day for his own father's murder he doesn't have remorse and that was
37:45the shocking throughout this entire ordeal anthony played the loving son while he was pulling all the
37:55strings i don't know for certain but i'm not sure that anthony has a soul
38:04so detectives are thinking what's the motive here once we make the arrest we look into anthony zotolo
38:14sally dad had multiple businesses from real estate to also joker poker machines anthony was running
38:20the real estate the real estate arm of this business but the eldest son salvator was running
38:29the joker poker portion of this business and worked more closely with the mob associates and the folks
38:37within social clubs i think this was a case of anthony wiping out his brother and his father
38:47wanting dad's money wanting the brother's money as the only way to ascend in the family and become the
38:56guy the only motive that is clear as day is the motive of greed sally it's just good guy man we would
39:09take it back our world usually doesn't happen over money to respect your father you're gonna kill him or your
39:15blood though but you got to be out of your mind to do something like that
39:33sean shelton tells the u.s attorney hyman ross is the guy that was a shooter
39:38prosecutors said hyman ross was a violent member of the blood street gang with a felony record
39:44i mean he was definitely someone capable of pulling off a targeted killing in a drive-through
40:00it took them over a year really to succeed because of the different players that they had involved
40:21and that's also what kind of threw us off during the days you went from guys who really had no experience
40:27experience trying to carry this out to at the end more experienced guys that were able to get the job
40:33done i think the most bothersome part about this case is that the elder zatola did everything for his
40:44children and yet it wasn't enough for anthony anthony anthony was still interacting with his father
40:55at birthdays at family events making money off of his father meantime secretly plotting his demise
41:04attack you
