00:00Last time on MasterChef Canada, the top 12 faced their first elimination challenge.
00:06And it was Alice whose MasterChef Canada journey came to an end.
00:11Good luck, everyone.
00:12Tonight, the top 11 faced their first team challenge.
00:18But when both teams spin out of control...
00:22Medic, medic, medic, medic!
00:24I'm worried we won't have anything to serve.
00:27The judges are forced to step in.
00:30Let's get those shrimp going.
00:31That's enough. Go!
00:32I am so embarrassed.
00:41It's a beautiful morning at Toronto's Black Creek Pioneer Village,
00:46where the top 11 will face off in their very first team challenge.
00:51There's horse and carriages and cords of wood,
00:54and all I'm thinking is, I'm going to have to light my own fire to cook.
00:57I hear some baa in the background, baa.
01:04I'm thinking this challenge could be whoever can churn the most butter in a limited amount of time wins.
01:09I will do anything to win this competition.
01:12If I have to milk a damn cow, I will.
01:18Oh.
01:19Oh, wow.
01:20Whoa.
01:21Oh, my God.
01:22Oh, my God.
01:24I see the judges with about 100 people behind them,
01:28and I just don't know what to expect.
01:31They keep coming, and they keep coming.
01:33And I'm thinking, holy crap, we're cooking for a big group of people.
01:37And a very diverse group of people.
01:41Good morning, and welcome to Black Creek Pioneer Village,
01:46the site of your very first team challenge.
01:50It's also about to become a very special site for these folks right here with us today.
01:56They hail from 16 different countries from all around the world.
02:00They speak several different languages and practice a number of different religions.
02:05But they all have one thing in common.
02:09They're about to become Canadian citizens.
02:16My family came from India to Montreal, Canada, 35 years ago.
02:20And this is extremely special to me because I know how much potential these new Canadians have.
02:28I myself am from Vietnam.
02:30I came here when I was four.
02:31So I really know how special of a day it is for them.
02:35You know, at one time, the three of us were also newcomers to this wonderful country.
02:40Becoming a Canadian was one of the proudest moments of my life.
02:44It's something to truly celebrate.
02:47And that's where you come in.
02:49Today, you'll be creating a MasterChef Canada feast for these new Canadians.
02:55What an honor to cook a meal for people on what could be the biggest day of their lives.
03:01Now it's time for all of you to prepare for your citizenship ceremony.
03:05When we see you next, you'll be Canadian citizens.
03:08So go work up an appetite.
03:13Justine and Miranda, you two created the best dishes in the elimination challenge.
03:18So you are the team captains today.
03:20Come on up and get your aprons.
03:24People think I'm this little Justine who's really cute and bubbly, but I study business.
03:28I know how to handle and manage people and I'm ready to show that to everyone.
03:33I don't underestimate Justine in any way, but I know that I have a little bit of a bigger voice
03:39than her, so I'm feeling pretty confident.
03:43Justine, since you won the last challenge, you get first pick for the red team.
03:48My first pick is like a big brother to me.
03:50He's really good in the kitchen and that's why my first pick is Trevor.
03:56I couldn't be more happy.
03:57I'll follow Justine into battle any day.
04:01Miranda, you're captain of the white team.
04:03Who do you choose?
04:04One of the most important things in the kitchen to me is having people that I trust.
04:09So my first pick is me.
04:11It feels really nice to be Miranda's first pick because I trust in her cooking abilities.
04:17Your turn, Justine.
04:18I'm picking Aaron.
04:20Merci.
04:22Miranda, it's back to you.
04:24I need someone who sweats more than me on my team, so I'm going to pick my sweaty brother, Matt.
04:29I am who I am.
04:30It's not going to change.
04:31I'm a sweaty guy.
04:33Justine.
04:33Jordan.
04:36I'm on the best team and I know it.
04:39Okay, Miranda.
04:42My next choice is Taya.
04:46Okay, Justine.
04:47I choose Alicia.
04:52So Miranda, only two home cooks left.
04:55Kimberly and Barry.
04:57Kim.
04:57I don't get it.
05:01I'm a good cook.
05:02I'm also the person with the most experience.
05:05You know what, Barry?
05:07It's no fun to be picked last.
05:09No, it's not.
05:10But there is a bright side.
05:11You get to choose the team that you like to join.
05:21I'm going red because that combination to me resonates.
05:26Okay, Barry.
05:27Please go and join the red team.
05:30Welcome home, Barry.
05:34Today, each team will only have two hours to create a beautiful buffet-style meal
05:41to honor 105 new Canadians and their families.
05:46Your team kitchens are fully equipped with everything that you'll need.
05:50Each team must prepare a noodle dish, a curry dish, and one of those dishes must be vegetarian.
05:57And each team also has to make a delicious salad.
06:00After sampling both your buffets, the new Canadians get to vote for the meal they like the most.
06:08The losing team will face a pressure test, and that will send at least one of you home.
06:14Are you ready to create an unforgettable feast?
06:18Yes, Chef!
06:19Your time starts now!
06:23Go, go, go, go, guys!
06:26All right, guys, we've got this.
06:28Red, red, red.
06:30All right, guys.
06:30While the new Canadians prepare to take their oath at a nearby pavilion...
06:34Welcome to your citizenship ceremony.
06:38...the home cooks have just two hours to create a buffet-style lunch in their honor.
06:44Alicia, you're very good with curry. Do you want to be in charge of that?
06:46Sure, yes.
06:47Perfect.
06:47You know, this menu planning is so important because it's the opportunity for the team
06:52captain to establish the direction.
06:55I'm doing yellow curry, squid...
06:57Well, I'll have the final say.
06:58I want all ideas, but ultimately, it's going to be my decision, guys.
07:02I mean, obviously, it's very important to let everyone know who's boss.
07:06We could throw some heat in there with some of the jalapenos.
07:08We're going to have heat from the curry, though.
07:09I want this to be a nice, mellow dish.
07:11I would have liked to have my voice heard a little bit more, but Miranda is the leader on this one,
07:16and I need to listen to her.
07:18I'm tasting everything before we have final approval.
07:21If I don't like it, we've got to think of a new idea, guys.
07:23With all these curries and everything, I want to do a nice, light, like, frisee salad.
07:27For rice, I want to do a play on the meghadra.
07:30A saffron-flavored rice with sultana raisins, slivered almonds.
07:34On the red team, it looks as if Justine is taking ideas from all the home cooks.
07:38For the salad dish, we've got the beets.
07:41I'm sure we can find some dill somewhere.
07:43It almost appears that Aaron's in charge.
07:45I have strong people in my team, and I'm worried they're going to take the beets.
07:49All right, guys, guys, guys, listen up.
07:50But they have to listen to me.
07:52I'm the team captain.
07:53Are you all good with that?
07:54Yes.
07:55Perfect. Let's do this.
07:56One, two, three.
08:00Let's keep the communication up.
08:01Yes.
08:02Drop the onions first.
08:03I got the onions.
08:04How exciting is this challenge in both the red team and the white team?
08:10They get to cook for new Canadians.
08:12I definitely don't want to let any of them down,
08:13and I want them to taste some proud Canadian food.
08:17Taya's job today is the vegetable curry.
08:20Do you think that if I fill that pot up, that's going to be 100?
08:23No, we need probably two of those.
08:24Okay.
08:26I just need to make sure the flavor is right.
08:28That curry is certainly not the way you want to welcome new Canadians.
08:32Kimberly's going to make a spinach, fennel, cucumber, tomato salad.
08:36Well, why am I making salad?
08:37I came here from Jamaica.
08:39I have a really strong background with curry.
08:42Just doesn't make sense.
08:44Emma is responsible for the shrimp noodle dish.
08:46This is a marinade that I grew up with.
08:49I know that you guys know your flavors.
08:51I trust you guys.
08:52We need salt.
08:53I already added salt.
08:56We have a lot of elements.
08:57Please keep up.
08:58I will not let you down.
09:00We are making bell pepper pasta with lots of spices.
09:04Barry is fully in charge of the pasta.
09:07Probably 10 minutes away on those peppers.
09:09Okay.
09:10I'm comfortable with pasta.
09:11My only concern, I've never cooked pasta for 105 people.
09:15We decide to make a chicken curry.
09:18I'm the curry queen and I can't wait to show what I can do.
09:22Trevor is in charge of salad with Jordan.
09:26I'm working on our vinaigrette.
09:28I think everyone knows that I'm capable of creating really elevated flavors.
09:32Come on guys.
09:38The red team is making their own curry paste from scratch.
09:41We gotta let it sweat and let all the flavors develop.
09:44The white team.
09:45Okay, I want the curry paste in here now.
09:47Okay.
09:48They're using a pre-made curry paste.
09:50I think that's going to make a huge difference because these new Canadians come from places
09:55where they make their own curry by hand.
09:58I'm not feeling good about pre-made curry paste.
10:01But I don't just use the paste.
10:02It's way better with the lemon.
10:04Instantly better.
10:05Right?
10:05I'll add my own spices.
10:07It's going to taste delicious.
10:08The curry ladies.
10:09Ah, woo!
10:10Ginger.
10:11Ginger.
10:13Guys, where is the ginger?
10:14Ginger's in the cooler.
10:15Ginger's in the cooler.
10:16Ginger's in the cooler.
10:17Cooler.
10:18Cooler, Jordan.
10:19Look at the red team.
10:19Everybody's yelling orders.
10:21You know, why all this commotion?
10:22We're just talking loud.
10:23We're not yelling at anybody.
10:24We're not yelling.
10:25We're not yelling.
10:26Everybody remain calm.
10:27It just seems chaotic and a lot of over necessary communicating.
10:31Guys, I have the ginger.
10:32Jordan's got the ginger, red team.
10:34I have the ginger.
10:35Thank you so much.
10:36It's wasted energy.
10:37Holy crap.
10:38Let's get this together.
10:39One hour.
10:44You have one hour left.
10:47One hour left, guys.
10:48Let's start turning it up.
10:49Let's do this, white team.
10:50Keep it going, guys.
10:52We're doing great.
10:54Hi, Chef Bonio.
10:56Is this your curry right here?
10:57Yes, it is.
10:59Wow.
11:00Miranda, this is so watery.
11:03Are you making a soup or an actual curry?
11:06I wanted to trust Haya's curryability,
11:08but I'm getting really worried.
11:10Who's going to take the heat if it doesn't work out?
11:13We win as a team.
11:13We sink as a team.
11:15This isn't right.
11:16This could cost us the win.
11:18I am pretty nervous.
11:20The curry is quite liquidy.
11:22You know what I would do with this?
11:23Take some potatoes and use potatoes as a thickening agent,
11:26because there's a lot of starch to potatoes.
11:28Chef Claudio has a great idea that if I boil potatoes in the curry,
11:32it will definitely thicken in time for service.
11:34You don't have much time and use it wisely.
11:36I will, Chef.
11:37Taya, get potatoes chopped now.
11:40I need to clear a space.
11:42Pick it up, Taya.
11:44Do this.
11:45Do that.
11:46Get your craft together.
11:47Go, hurry.
11:49I feel like I'm a child and my parents are scolding me.
11:53Let's not lose our cool here, guys.
11:58In 45 minutes, 105 hungry people are going to be coming at you.
12:04Let's make everything perfect.
12:07Guys, did you hear me?
12:08Yes, I heard you.
12:09Yes, Chef.
12:10I'm the captain.
12:11I want to hear you guys when I speak, please.
12:13Absolutely, Justine.
12:15I think the nerves are getting the better of Justine right now.
12:17I'm small, but I can talk.
12:20Justine, what kind of curry is this?
12:22It's a mixture.
12:22It's a yellow, green, kind of like an Indian Thai fusion.
12:26I like to make my own curry.
12:27Wow, you're going to put some coconut milk in here?
12:31Yes, it's really going to be tasty.
12:33All right, keep on stirring.
12:34Yes, Chef.
12:34Really good, guys.
12:35Keep it going.
12:37I'm super happy.
12:38I'm happy you're happy, Captain.
12:41Matt, come give me your opinion, please.
12:43Coming.
12:46Yep, yep.
12:46Okay, thank you.
12:47Our shrimp is ready to be cooked, but there are no free burners available.
12:52I need a cooktop.
12:54We need the cooking space for the shrimp.
12:56We found out very quickly that real estate on the stove is hard to come by.
12:59I got it, I got it, I got it, I got it.
13:01So I moved some water off the industrial stove and got those shrimps going.
13:07Guys, I need help over here.
13:08I look back at May and there's a bowl of shrimp there.
13:12I will take care of this.
13:14Okay, shrimp will be done in two minutes.
13:16Kim just started banging out shrimp.
13:19Don't mix the raw shrimp with the cooked shrimp.
13:21I can make good shrimp.
13:22I don't think anyone can cook a shrimp as good as I can.
13:26May, you're in charge of the chow mein.
13:28How's it going?
13:29It's all going good.
13:30We don't have a boil in our water.
13:32White team, you need to get that water on for the noodles in smaller pots, ready for the chow mein.
13:37I had little pots of water on the boil.
13:39Why did anyone take them off?
13:41Bad idea.
13:43The water was boiling.
13:45Next time I turn around, where's all the freaking pots?
13:49Okay, chop chop.
13:50Yes, chef.
13:51Matt, get the stock off and get the water pot on there.
13:53That's what I'm doing.
13:5630 minutes!
13:58You only have 30 minutes left!
14:00The citizenship ceremony is wrapping up.
14:02Congratulations, you're now Canadian citizens.
14:05And the new Canadians will soon be ready for their buffet lunch.
14:10I am working on pureeing our muhammara pasta sauce.
14:14This is our veggie pasta dish.
14:16It's very flavorful.
14:17We got lots of spice in here.
14:18I need covers.
14:19Et voila!
14:21Meanwhile, the white team is still struggling with their curry.
14:25This curry tastes good.
14:27It's now just consistency.
14:29I might add some broccoli in here.
14:30What about cream?
14:31Greek yogurt!
14:32We're just throwing everything into the curry now.
14:34Chickpeas and cauliflower in there, Taya!
14:37We need to just get some stuff in there.
14:38What if we ground up some of the noodles we're not using?
14:4415 minutes left!
14:47Final push!
14:47I need you concentrated!
14:49Berry pasta in there now!
14:51I need three minutes, otherwise we're gonna run out.
14:53Three minutes, that's it!
14:54Out!
14:55Medic!
14:57Get those sprinters on high!
14:58Get them on high!
14:59Both these teams are falling apart.
15:01Ah!
15:03Fuck!
15:03You okay?
15:04Someone's gotta help use the noodles.
15:05I can only be at one place at one time.
15:09Matt!
15:10Help me carry this over!
15:12All of a sudden, I'm getting lightheaded and seeing stars.
15:19I'm kind of starting to have a little bit of blurred vision.
15:22I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.
15:25Matt is essential.
15:26If we lose him, we're down for the count.
15:29There is no time to stop.
15:30There is no time to think.
15:32And everything catches up to me.
15:35But I'm not gonna give up.
15:38Okay guys, I'm gonna jump in and help.
15:40I'm just pushing through because I know that we need to get this food out.
15:43Come on guys, we can do this.
15:44We're gonna bring this back.
15:45Let's do this.
15:46Thank God.
15:47Matt is doing okay.
15:49Nothing better than a victory when we face some adversity.
15:53Five minutes!
15:55The new Canadians are on the move!
15:58They are hungry!
15:59Berry!
16:00Tasta!
16:00Tasta's coming.
16:02Medic!
16:03Medic!
16:03Medic!
16:03Medic!
16:04Medic!
16:05Oh my goodness.
16:06I just cut my nail off.
16:08I am freaking out.
16:11It's a disaster.
16:12You think they'll be ready in town?
16:14I don't think so.
16:15I mean, I don't know how they're gonna pull it off.
16:16Throw noodles in there!
16:17Water's boiling!
16:18I'm worried we won't have anything to serve these people on a very special day.
16:23Where are the freaking peppers and onions guys?
16:26I think we're gonna have to jump in and give these guys a hand.
16:27I would agree.
16:30Let's get those shrimp going.
16:31Let's go!
16:31Miranda, get this in a chafing dish.
16:33Let's go.
16:34Guys, careful!
16:36Where is the pasta?
16:37Right here.
16:39It doesn't look appetizing.
16:41Put it in the food processor so it becomes a lot smoother.
16:43Okay?
16:44Okay, good.
16:45Get the cashew in there.
16:46You want to thicken it, right?
16:47Get it in now!
16:48Now the chefs are having to help us.
16:51How much noodles do you have?
16:52We have two potel pans.
16:54That's enough, okay?
16:55Go!
16:56I am so embarrassed.
16:58Miranda, leave!
16:59I'm doing it.
17:00Let's go, guys!
17:01This is so watery.
17:03My goodness.
17:04This is a disaster, Miranda.
17:06I'm not giving up yet, chef.
17:07It's not over till the fat lady sinks.
17:10I went into the red team to check out their pasta sauce.
17:13The texture is funky.
17:15My suggestion was throw it in the blender because right now it's very, very coarse.
17:19I just don't think it'll present well.
17:20Put that pasta in that!
17:22I was in the white team.
17:23I came out, but Claudio is still there.
17:26He is.
17:26He's helping out on the chow mein.
17:30Hotel pan!
17:31Noodles!
17:31Someone help me out here!
17:32Miranda, everything that's finished and ready to go, put it in one area, okay?
17:37Up top there is where everything finished is gonna go!
17:39As frantic as things are, we are still getting our dishes into the serving pans.
17:45One minute!
17:47You have one minute left!
17:49I need rice now!
17:51I'm going crazy.
17:53I got one more pot of pasta.
17:54Mary, we don't have time for this.
17:56This is the most intense thing I've ever done.
17:58Aaron, put that rice in!
18:00All right!
18:00Is this rice done?
18:01Yes, yes, yes, yes!
18:03Everything is finally coming together.
18:05Get the curry up there!
18:06I gotta get the cilantro on it!
18:08This curry is definitely thicker from where we started.
18:11Let's kill it!
18:12Let's kill it!
18:13Our dishes look great.
18:14Five, four, three, two, one!
18:19Service starts now!
18:21Get that food out!
18:22Both teams finished their cooks just in time and must now serve their dishes to the 105
18:30new Canadians and their families.
18:32Congratulations!
18:33Enjoy!
18:34You like it spicy?
18:36Okay, well then I think you'll like this one.
18:39The white team is serving up vegetable curry with steamed rice,
18:43shrimp chow mein with peanut sauce,
18:46and a tomato fennel salad with citrus vinaigrette.
18:49It may not be the most beautiful, but it will be tasty.
18:52There you go.
18:53Enjoy!
18:53Congratulations!
18:54The red team is offering a roasted red pepper and fennel pasta,
18:59chicken curry, and chickpea and spinach salad with dill vinaigrette.
19:04It's an honor to cook for you today.
19:06Enjoy your pasta!
19:14Welcome to Canada.
19:15Thank you so much.
19:16Where are you from?
19:17From Cairo, Egypt.
19:18Okay.
19:19Tell me about the food.
19:20The white is more unique.
19:21The curry is subtle and it's not very heavy and creamy.
19:25The red team is the special team for my special day.
19:29Because I feel like the white is very plain.
19:33So I made the curry paste from scratch.
19:34I hope you enjoy.
19:36Were there any favorites in your mind?
19:38I liked the white plate better because it was well cooked,
19:41very flavorful, spicy, which goes well with my palate.
19:45The red plate, perfect.
19:48This chicken curry is delicious.
19:50I like the red pasta because it has a lot of flavor.
19:55Good job guys!
19:57Good job!
19:59The teams have succeeded in feeding all 105 new Canadians.
20:03Now you get to do something you've never done on Canadian soil.
20:17Vote!
20:19You get to vote for the buffet meal you like the best.
20:23Take a red or white maple leaf and put it in the ballot box.
20:27May the forks be with you.
20:29Not winning today would suck, but I think we have a good chance.
20:35The red team was awesome. We got this.
20:42With all the votes cast and counted, the judges will now reveal the winning team.
20:48Home cooks, with a little bit of help from the three of us, you got the food out
20:52and the new Canadians found a lot to enjoy in both of your meals.
20:58As you know, each guest cast their vote for the team whose meal they liked the best.
21:03And the winning team won by just 13 votes.
21:10My team never gave up. I know that we got this.
21:15Everyone worked their ass off. We so deserve this.
21:19Are you ready to find out who won?
21:21Yes, Chef!
21:22The team that will now move forward to the top 10 is...
21:33We are so proud of each other. This was our first team challenge.
21:45I think our team did deserve to win.
21:48There was only a 13 vote gap.
21:50It wasn't a landslide. They're hooting and hollering, but they just squeaked by.
21:55Well, white team, you know what that means.
22:02Tomorrow, you will all face a pressure test that will send at least one of you home.
22:09Now go get some rest. We'll see you back in the MasterChef Canada kitchen.
22:13It's the day after the citizenship challenge, and Miranda's team has traded in their white aprons
22:28for black ones.
22:29Wearing a black apron in the MasterChef Canada kitchen is never a good thing.
22:33That means someone's going home. But that someone is not on my team.
22:38We are secured in top 10.
22:43Yesterday, you all competed in your very first team challenge.
22:49The results were very close. Justine, what do you think gave your team the edge?
22:55Alicia's career was amazing. We were communicating. I really think it was a team effort that made us win.
23:03Miranda, you were the team captain. What went wrong?
23:08It came down to time management. Before we knew it, the clock was dwindling down.
23:14Something happened with our pots of water for the noodles.
23:19Who took that water away?
23:20That was me.
23:23Why'd you do that?
23:23Because frankly, we needed the space on the stove to cook our proteins.
23:27And if we needed to finish up noodles at the end, which we did, we got it done.
23:33Kimberly, what do you think went wrong?
23:37I feel like it was a leadership problem.
23:40Everyone should have had a job.
23:41Everyone was delegated a task.
23:44When it got hectic, everyone jumped in where they were most useful.
23:47So unfortunately, I have to disagree with Kimberly's comments.
23:52Miranda, if you were to be given a chance to save yourself, would you take it?
23:58I stand by my team, but at the end of the day, this is an individual competition.
24:08And the part of me that's the fighter knows that you have to sometimes save yourself.
24:12Well, Miranda, we are giving you the opportunity to save one person, and that includes yourself.
24:26I can't do that.
24:27It's not that easy standing beside my fellow home cooks.
24:32You're in a very difficult spot right now, but you have to do it.
24:35Who are you going to save?
24:39I know that my team worked great, but I have to save myself.
24:45I'm looking at her thinking, are you serious?
24:48If I went home today knowing I had the option to save myself, I wouldn't be able to live with that.
25:00Matt, how do you feel about Miranda's decision?
25:02If I was in the same predicament, I would do the same thing.
25:06It is an individual competition, and you are trying to move forward.
25:09Kimberly, what would you have done?
25:10I would have saved Matt.
25:13So you would have been a captain that was willing to go down with its ship?
25:16Yes.
25:18Miranda, please head up to the gallery.
25:22If I was in Miranda's situation, I would definitely go down with the ship.
25:27No doubt in my mind.
25:29At the end of the day, I'm here for a cooking competition.
25:32They'll get their day in front of the judges, and then they'll be eating their words.
25:39Now it's time for the first pressure test of the season.
25:43It's a truly sophisticated dish that puts all your skills to the test.
25:53Squidding pasta with honey mushrooms and a soft-boiled hen's egg.
25:58Now this test is a replication.
26:02The first thing you have to do is delicately fillet and collect all the ink you can from
26:09several squid to make your jet black pasta.
26:12I'm extremely nervous.
26:15I've never, ever touched a raw squid before.
26:20That's just the first step.
26:22After that, fresh pasta from scratch, perfectly cooked honey mushrooms, and one soft-boiled egg.
26:29And you only have 30 minutes to finish it all.
26:34Oh my god, thank god I don't have to do this.
26:37Now please head to your stations where you'll find everything you'll need.
26:42All right, home cooks, is everyone ready?
26:45Yes, chef!
26:47Your time starts now!
26:49I've never broken down a squid, never taken ink out, but you know what, you learn on the fly.
26:59Where the freak is the silvery thing.
27:01So step number one, they have to cut into that squid and reveal that beautiful little ink sac.
27:07Then you have to press your fingers down on it and squeeze with a little bit of pressure,
27:11not too much, and force that ink right down into your container.
27:15Looks like May is the first one to get the ink sac out.
27:18Impressive.
27:19I got this.
27:22Ew, ew, ew, eyeball squirting.
27:24Oh no, there's no ink.
27:26Taya has already burst her sack.
27:28She's lost a lot of ink and there's not a lot in there.
27:32This is way harder than I thought.
27:37This is so hard right now.
27:38Let's go guys, keep it up.
27:40You guys got that.
27:42You got this, Taya, you got it.
27:44Squeezing that ink out, it's really tricky,
27:47but I was actually surprised that I got so much out.
27:53They've just harvested that squid ink.
27:55Next is to make the pasta.
27:58I tell you, you got to be very intelligent here because you got to figure out how much
28:01squirting you have and adjust the amount of pasta you make according to that.
28:06Come on.
28:11Taya.
28:11Yes, Chef Claudio.
28:12Have you ever made fresh pasta before?
28:14I have actually.
28:16I just want to make sure I get the proper consistency in the dough.
28:19Who do you think is going to struggle the most here?
28:21I have a feeling that it might be Kim.
28:25Just because she hasn't made pasta that often.
28:28I can see the focus, see what happens.
28:30Fingers crossed.
28:31Thank you, Chef Claudio.
28:31Hey there, Matt.
28:38You happy with the amount of squid ink you were able to harvest in five minutes?
28:40Very happy.
28:41That was the first time I've ever harvested ink from a squid,
28:44and I got a nice black pasta here.
28:46You're sounding and seeming very positive about it.
28:48I hope so.
28:48It's going to all come down to timing now.
28:50What's the biggest challenge in this cook?
28:52The biggest challenge is going to be to get that egg perfectly cooked on top.
28:55And you only have one egg to do it?
28:57One egg, exactly.
28:58Looking forward to tasting that pasta dish.
28:59Thank you, Chef.
29:00Thank you, Matt.
29:04Okay.
29:05Damn muscles.
29:07Come on.
29:08The dough needs to rest for 10 minutes.
29:10So my strategy is to get the pasta out of the way and then get my boiled egg going.
29:15Okay.
29:17Timing is essential.
29:19I'm going to cook my egg for five minutes.
29:22The egg has to be perfectly soft-boiled.
29:25I would say probably around five to six minutes on the egg.
29:28I'm going to boil my egg for exactly six minutes.
29:32And you've got to remember also, once that egg is out of that boiling water,
29:36you make sure you right away cool it down with ice cold water.
29:39You've got to shock it.
29:48Kimberly, have you had a lot of experience making pasta?
29:51No, this is actually my second time.
29:53Wow.
29:54Yeah, I'm pretty nervous right now.
29:56I'm going to push through it and, you know, there's no challenge I can't overcome and I'm going to
30:01overcome this one.
30:02Well, Kimberly, stay focused and you'll be surprised what can happen.
30:06Thank you, Chef.
30:07My future is riding on this dish.
30:10I'm the single mother.
30:11I'm here for my daughter.
30:14Ten minutes!
30:16You don't have ten minutes left.
30:18Come on.
30:19If I make a soft-boiled egg for my daughter, it doesn't have to be perfect.
30:24But here, it has to be perfect.
30:28Oh, shit.
30:30Man, Kimberly just broke her egg.
30:33Did she break her egg?
30:34Yeah.
30:37It doesn't want to peel.
30:39It's coming apart.
30:40Taya's mangling her egg right now.
30:42This egg is just not wanting to peel.
30:44Okay, okay.
30:46Be delicate, Taya.
30:48It is a nightmare.
30:50I'm thinking I'm going home.
30:51Five minutes!
30:53Five minutes left!
30:54Come on, get going!
30:55Five minutes!
30:57I got to do my pasta for three minutes to get it perfect.
31:01This is all about impeccable time management.
31:04If you put your noodles into that water too early, they're going to get mushy.
31:07If they don't go in and have enough time, they're going to be too al dente.
31:13One minute!
31:14You have one minute left!
31:16Check your plate mixture.
31:17You have everything on it.
31:18It broke.
31:24Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one, heads up!
31:36I think we've made it extremely hard on these judges.
31:45We all have all the components.
31:46It's really going to come down to those minute details.
31:49What happened here?
31:59It's the egg.
32:00I was going to peel my egg and for some reason I went like this to crack it.
32:06I hope despite this little crack in the foundation that inside of this egg is a beautiful liquid center.
32:14Fingers crossed.
32:23Look at that.
32:26That's stunning.
32:28If this doesn't bring a smile to your face, Kimberly, nothing will.
32:37What happened to the salt?
32:38Did you forget the salt?
32:39I forgot the salt.
32:41Everyone knows that salt and eggs are best friends.
32:44What happened?
32:44I think I was a little overwhelmed with the egg being cracked and...
32:48You lost focus.
32:49I just forgot that one touch.
32:55Hello, Kimberly.
32:56Hi, Chef.
32:57Well, let's see how the overall taste is here.
33:04The foundation flavors here are very good.
33:08Unfortunately, the noodle is under.
33:14I hope for your sake that we get a chance to taste another pasta from you again.
33:28Matt!
33:29How are you doing, Chef Alvin?
33:30Looks like you got everything there.
33:32Some nice caramelization of the mushrooms.
33:35Good amount of pasta.
33:37I hope to see sunshine leaking out of this egg.
33:40I can see the sunshine, but it's not so runny, Matt.
33:51You're probably off about a minute.
33:55How many did you cook it for?
33:56For six minutes.
33:58Well, it still tastes good.
34:16How are you feeling?
34:17I know that my egg was a little over, but next time I make it, hopefully it'll be perfect.
34:21Chives here, not only are there too many, they're very thick.
34:26You need to go a little cleaner on that cut.
34:28And that's a minor detail, but it's an important detail.
34:39The flavor is awesome.
34:40Thank you, Chef.
34:41Really awesome.
34:43You know, Matt, this is not a perfect bowl of noodles,
34:47but it does convey to me that you have a lot of potential.
34:51Hopefully you live to see another day in this kitchen.
34:53Thank you very much, Chef.
35:01Hi there, Mae.
35:02Hi, Chef Michael.
35:03How are you feeling?
35:03I think I might have overcooked my eggs.
35:07What makes you think your egg is overcooked, Mae?
35:09I cooked it for the same amount of time that Matt did.
35:12I also did it for six minutes as well.
35:14See, you know, if the egg is cold, it takes a little longer.
35:18Depending whether it's room temperature may take a little less time, the size of the egg.
35:23So let's see if this egg is golden, rich, and runny.
35:27If my egg is overcooked, this could be the end of my food dream.
35:38Look at that.
35:41It's pretty good to me.
35:44Relieved?
35:44Relieved.
35:50Did you hit the egg with a little salt?
35:51No, I hit the noodles with the salt.
35:53It's always that last bright pop of flavor.
35:58Never forget again.
36:00You'll never forget again is right.
36:07So what am I expecting to taste when I dig into this jet black noodle?
36:14You're gonna get the garlic, the butter, and the olive oil, as well as the chives.
36:23This tastes great.
36:28Flavors are there.
36:28I can taste the garlic.
36:30I can taste the lemon.
36:32Be proud.
36:32Thank you, Chef Alvin.
36:33Hi there, Tia.
36:42Chef Michael.
36:44Your egg is not the prettiest, has a little crack here.
36:46Yeah, Chef, it does.
36:47You struggled getting that shell off.
36:49I put it too long in the ice water bath, and then it made it difficult to peel afterwards.
36:54Let's see.
37:03Oh my god.
37:05That looks perfect.
37:07Oh, thank god.
37:08Right, Tia.
37:09Was that beginner's luck?
37:12I knew I needed it about five, five and a half minutes.
37:15I took it out at five and a half, and fingers crossed.
37:18Maybe a bit of both.
37:19Yes.
37:29The color is jet black.
37:30It looks beautiful.
37:32It's deep.
37:33There's almost a sense of mystery to it.
37:42Tia, do you really think you belong in this competition?
37:46I've certainly had my doubts.
37:48I only ask because if you continue to cook this way,
37:54you certainly belong here.
37:55Oh my god.
37:55Thank you so much.
37:56Come on.
37:57The noodles are perfect.
37:59You can tell they're handmade.
38:00They're very tender.
38:02Oh, I needed that.
38:03That's excellent.
38:03Thank you, chef.
38:12I'm not the most confident.
38:14I might be going home because of that stupid soft boiled egg.
38:17But what they did in that amount of time, that pressure, I'm impressed.
38:21At this point, it's really anyone's game.
38:24We all made mistakes.
38:25And we know our answer.
38:27Let's go and share it with the home cooks.
38:38Taking everything into account, one home cook stood out from the rest.
38:42The best squid ink pasta was made by Taya.
38:52Here you go, Taya.
38:54Oh my gosh.
38:55That's so exciting.
38:56Congratulations, Taya.
38:59Please head on up to the gallery.
39:02I never would have dreamed in a million years that I would be top 10 at MasterChef Canada.
39:07Now for the bad news.
39:12We had to consider every single missing grain of salt, every overcooked egg, and every undercooked strand of pasta.
39:21Ultimately, we felt that one home cook fell just a little short of the others.
39:29We have no other choice but to say goodbye to...
39:36Kimberly.
39:41Matt and May, please head on up to the gallery.
39:43Kimberly, we know that this isn't the result that you'd been hoping for.
39:53But there is a bright side.
39:55Your seven-year-old daughter, Nevaeh, will be so thrilled to welcome you home.
40:02She got to see her extremely talented mother excel on the national stage.
40:08And that's quite an achievement.
40:09So please come up here and say goodbye to us.
40:15Don't you ever stop cooking.
40:16It's bittersweet.
40:18It's bittersweet.
40:19But in order to grow, you have to learn.
40:23And you know, I learned a lot.
40:25It was a really awesome experience.
40:26And I would not change anything.
40:30This isn't the last of me.
40:31I'll be back.
40:37Next time, a team challenge with a shocking twist.
40:41We're not going to let you see anything.
40:44You're going to taste blindfolded.
40:47Puts the top 10's palates to the test.
40:49Ew.
40:50And a champion returns.
40:53Please welcome Mary Bird.
40:56Hi, everybody.
40:57For a game-changing elimination.
40:59Is this a joke?
41:00OKCity vs Adam WreckΓamos immediately?

41:03All right?

41:05To be careful...
41:05Enjoy your mind.
41:06To be careful...
41:06That's what you are...

41:07You have to take advantage...
