00:00we live in a world where murder happens all too frequently it takes a particularly twisted kind
00:18of killer to dismember a body we found body parts in suitcases floating in the Chesapeake Bay the
00:27severed legs of a white male man's head torso and arms who cuts up bodies that's a mob move
00:37dismemberment it takes some degree of planning a reciprocating saw goes back and forth we're
00:44gonna see those teeth marks this image of human sawdust is very visceral Bill's sister called
00:51and said Bill is missing and I'm scared you get into debt will someone get murdered yeah absolutely
00:58he was having an affair passions were high we found a clear vial of liquid with a syringe
01:08so what happened this case but everything sex drugs murder I want you to tell me the truth
01:15Virginia Beach is a coastal town along the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia it's a hot spot for tourists
01:40and the crime rate is very low so when body parts start shelling up in the bay that's a big cause for
01:48concern detectives oh especially for forensic specialist Beth Dunton and homicide detective
01:58Ray Patel who were on call that day and have agreed to share their insights with me so
02:04this case this was a hell of a complicated case it's shocking when you have a dismemberment I do think
02:15it's exciting that you and I for the first time can talk about this case you know one of the things
02:20that fascinates me about this case is you've got all the forensics of the the dismemberment and the
02:26psychology of the dismemberment oh yeah it was May 5th of 2004 a beautiful day and a boater and his family
02:40are boating out in the Chesapeake Bay and they come across this suitcase floating underwater they felt
02:47might have come off a car that was traveling on the bridge so they went and they pulled it out of the
02:52water it was a dark green Kenneth coal and they unzip it and immediately they see skin and immediately
03:07close it and they call 9-1-1 a marine patrol was dispatched out boarded their vessel and was able
03:18to examine that these were human remains within the suitcase there were plastic bags with yellow
03:27drawstrings they tore this open correct they opened that up and saw his legs from a white male this
03:38doesn't happen very often especially Virginia Beach the first suitcase generated a lot of news
03:45attention we are a resort city we're getting ready to gear up for the summer so body parts and suitcases
03:52you know not the best thing for us so we transported it to the medical examiner's office to view exactly what
04:00we had you get the legs into the me was the first talk there was a injury to the ankle where it looks
04:09like somebody was like I'm gonna cut the feet off but then that bones a little hard so they they went up
04:17to the leg area where they were able to you know cut around the tissue cut around the bone and like
04:23disarticulate from the joint oh yeah that makes a big difference to me joint disarticulation is a
04:31procedure where a limb is removed by separating the bones at the joint cutting through the tendons
04:37rather than cutting through the bone itself when I see a well-executed dismemberment I think of someone
04:45who has medical knowledge or someone who has a good working knowledge of anatomy perhaps someone who's done
04:51this before this was pretty clean and and pretty surgical is what I initially thought the legs
04:59themselves were found in a black trash bag with the yellow pull ties so you'd automatically know that
05:05this person was driving the remains absolutely you've got to contain all those bodily fluids and
05:11everything else that is gonna come out in the trash bags the best way to contain it all there's no
05:17discoloration legs looked very fresh these legs looked like they were recently placed into the
05:25water but our timeline can also be skewed because at that point in May the temperature of the water is
05:31anywhere between 55 and 65 degrees so that can delay the decomposition of the body parts and we have no
05:40identification on this person we're looking for any kind of tattoos anything that could help us identify
05:49them looking at missing persons flyers do we have a missing white male really there's not a lot to go on we
06:00were kind of in a waiting pattern at that point because you know what's coming next
06:03a researcher who was walking along the shoreline comes across this suitcase and it's washed up on the
06:17shore she was curious and unzipped it a little bit and stopped right there once she smelled the odor of
06:26decomposition so she calls the authorities we go respond to Fisherman's Island there's a Kenneth Cole
06:38green suitcase it does look like it came from a set it's in much worse condition very waterlogged
06:46we unzip the suitcase and inside we see those black trash bags with yellow drawstrings
06:54inside the trash bag was a torso that included the head arms and hands of a white male also in
07:08the larger suitcase was a white medical blanket so again it's more leaning towards somebody in the
07:15medical field so we again carefully peel away the trash bags well what's the first thing you notice
07:23he's got a penetrating gunshot wound through and through to his skull and two in his torso
07:28left behind left no exits correct two bullets were recovered at autopsy they were consistent
07:36with having been fired from a 38 caliber revolver
07:40but a trace evidence come up on it was a piece of fabric on on the actual bullet and what was
07:51interesting was one was encased in like this green synthetic fibrous material and what would those green
08:01fibers possibly be well first well then think about clothing passing through is gonna pick up fibers or more
08:09more commonly the person is shot through a pillow to luffle the sound of the gunshot the homemade silencer
08:18the homemade silencer yeah yeah
08:23now with the second suitcase we found other evidence in the back
08:27we found a metal weight and that was in the front pocket and it was only 5.5 pounds
08:38five and a half pounds isn't nearly enough to sink a body or even the upper half of a body it takes
08:44almost four times the amount of weight that you're trying to sink to maintain negative buoyancy now either
08:51the killer was in a rush and threw in what they had or more likely didn't know the science i think the
08:57reason the weight was in the second suitcase because the second suitcase had the head and hands which are
09:03two of the biggest identifiers of who the individual is someone clearly took very careful measures to
09:10ensure that his body was either never found or found in a way you would have a very difficult time
09:17putting the case together his face was in bad shape the decomposition had really accelerated investigators
09:26attempt to run their fingerprints hoping to obtain an id for the john doe because he's been in the water
09:33we got a lot of pruning and that makes it a little bit more difficult to get good quality fingerprints
09:39but i took the fingerprints and turned them over to our latent fingerprint examiners that can take several
09:45days to a week to search the entire data bank
09:51we're only missing one section which is the pelvis and the thigh area at this point there was so
09:57much news everybody was looking for suitcases floating in the water then a third suitcase is found
10:06the latest and third suitcase was brought to shore on sunday floating in the water off the second
10:11island of the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel this suitcase is found in the rocks off the chesapeake
10:18bay bridge tunnel a kenneth cole smaller than 30 inches but larger than the smaller suitcase so it's
10:27a good assumption that this is like the middle suitcase of a set and there were two black trash bags again
10:34with the same yellow drawstrings inside was the pelvis and the thigh area severed from the knee up and the
10:45waist down one of the things that fascinates me about these dismemberment cases is the instrument right
10:52so tell me was there a saw cut in any of the bone found i always thought these cuts especially the leg a
11:00scalpel could have have done that maybe a larger knife for the torso the me thought it was a power
11:07saw and the teeth were consistent with a sawzall a sawzall is a saw that goes back and forth rapidly
11:17doesn't make that much noise and is pretty efficient which again points to someone who seemed to know what
11:24they were doing we all felt in the unit this was one victim all the body parts have been recovered now
11:34without a hit on the fingerprints detective pakel tries another forensic tool to identify their john doe
11:42and figure out why he was killed you have to reverse engineer the man whose body parts were discovered
11:51his life and the people in it what's my next step well i went to our sketch artist that works for the
12:00police department the face was unrecognizable but a good forensic artist can recreate it using the bone
12:09structure they got a good likeness and put it out to the public
12:21i was in the seventh grade my mom was watching the morning news and she had seen this sketch and she
12:27calls my dad in and she says john look at this this looks like bill my dad and bill were best friends
12:35and we called him uncle bill bill was very charismatic very warm he had a really great energy he was very
12:42funny he was a big personality
12:48that night the police department receives a phone call from mr and mrs rice so i asked if they could
12:56come in that night for an interview and they did and then i showed them the sketch
13:02right away mrs rice sat up in her chair and she looked right at me and she gave me a nod
13:13this was their friend bill mcguire he had been missing since april 28th
13:20we find out from bill's friends that he's a 39 year old navy veteran married with two kids and that
13:27he lives in new jersey if he lives in new jersey how did he wind up in virginia beach
13:38this is a cold calculated murder they started their affair when she was actually pregnant
13:46he has the medical knowledge to do a dismemberment
13:49i want to know what happened that caused her to get this restraining
14:02with the help of an anthropologic sketch the dismembered victim found in three separate
14:08suitcases identified as that of bill mcguire
14:12you want to know who may have motive to see harm come to bill mcguire and who had the opportunity
14:21my parents were very close to bill so they wanted to participate in whatever way they could shine
14:27light on who he was and to get justice for him bill mcguire was 39 years old served in the navy
14:35he worked in the information technology field which was emerging in the early 2000s it was described
14:42to me that he had irish charm and he liked a good time and then he met melanie my parents they loved
14:49melanie they felt like melanie was a really great counterpart for bill that she met him on his level
14:56they were both very intelligent and they had a really great banter back and forth my dad was the
15:02best man in bill and melanie's wedding melanie was a beautiful bride and they just thought he really
15:10hit the jackpot melanie mcguire was in her 30s she was working as an rn she was educated mother of two
15:19sons that she shared with bill bill was a really dedicated father he was very involved you could tell
15:25he put his heart and soul into parenting there were no signs from the outside looking in that there
15:32was any trouble in his life but in early may bill's sister cindy had called and let my dad know that
15:40he was missing bill was a great person so who could have done this generally speaking in any relationship
15:49the significant other spouse etc is usually the first person that anyone takes a look at the fact
15:55that bill mcguire's wife melanie was a nurse lines up with the findings from the body that whoever murdered
16:02bill had enough medical knowledge to dismember him with precision before i actually notified his wife
16:11i immediately contacted woodbridge police department in new jersey i just want to know
16:19what happened for the last few weeks had his wife reported him missing not missing i found out that
16:26his wife melanie had obtained a temporary restraining order on him on the 29th of april
16:35and we're finding the first suitcase on may 5th interesting
16:41i want to know what happened that caused her to get this restraining order i wanted to travel to new jersey
16:50and notified melanie mcguire because i want to see the emotion when i tell her your husband was found
16:58deceased but i discovered that the local police department made the death notification without my
17:05knowledge so yellow meant a surprise was no longer there so my bosses are telling me go to new jersey
17:14do as much background on this family as possible and then if you can find out where it happened so
17:22you're thinking he was killed in new jersey
17:29so on june 1st 2004 myself and my partner we drove to teaneck new jersey and we interviewed bill mcguire's
17:39sister she was desperate to find out what happened to her brother she wanted justice done cindy loved
17:49her brother it was obvious she told us he and melanie just purchased a brand new home bill was very
17:56excited about the closing on this house the last time that bill had called my dad he thought he was
18:04about to embark on a new chapter of life what was very interesting was that bill's sister did not know
18:12about the restraining order according to bill's sister bill mcguire was happy in his life raising his
18:21two sons with his wife we know something happened in order to get this restraining order so what happened
18:31we're gonna have to talk to bill's wife and figure this one out
18:44we met melanie mcguire face to face for the first time at her attorney's office
18:52it was a non-threatening non-accusatory interview
18:56melanie says their marriage was on the rocks they fought all the time they had grown apart
19:04i asked her when was the last time she ever seen and she told me that on april 28th of 2004
19:11they had closed that evening on a new house she and bill went back to their apartment
19:18and they were both exhausted but melanie says they both wake up about 1 32 o'clock in the morning
19:28and almost immediately start arguing about money and the new house melanie's accusing bill of you're
19:36the one that wanted this house yeah and he's accusing her of not being a very attentive mother
19:42according to melanie emotions are high passions are high melanie said even though they fought
19:50constantly this time bill was violent he pushes her up against the wall he has a dryer sheet and he
19:59stuffs this dryer sheet in her mouth melanie said that she then escaped and locked herself in a bathroom
20:05and she said she was terrified and feared for her life
20:23as police interviewed bill's wife melanie she alleges that after being violently assaulted by bill
20:30she barricaded herself in the bathroom fearing for her life she could hear bill rummaging through
20:37the house the drawers next thing she hears is you're the reason why the kids are not going to have a father
20:44and you'll never see me again and she states that bill stormed out of the house he took three suitcases
20:51and he disappeared so melanie said she went to the local courthouse the next day and filed for the
21:03temporary restraining order she was asked you know why didn't she report him missing and she said well
21:11he wasn't missing because he left on his own so he was not missing so i'm watching her demeanor i'm
21:20watching her expressions i'm looking at her eyes and i did not see the eyes true clearly bill and melanie
21:28weren't the happy couple everyone thought they were but that doesn't mean she murdered him and
21:34dismemberment takes some degree of planning that's not the uh the sudden crime of passion when you shoot
21:39someone in a love argument and then decide oh i'm going to take him upstairs cut him on cases
21:44this is a cold calculated planned intentional murder and then she said her husband
21:54gambled in atlantic city sometimes he would lose thousands of dollars
22:00melanie said he may have been in over his head to someone in atlantic city what happens to people that
22:07can't pay their gambling debts when they're dealing with some unsightly characters in the gambling world
22:13they end up dead who cuts up bodies that's a mob move melanie said that he left in his 1998
22:25black nissan maximum and that you would probably find his vehicle in atlantic city police immediately
22:34put out an apb on bill's vehicle then focus in on the timeline time of death we have to put it with
22:44definitely when was the last time we saw somebody saw him alive and that would have been closing on
22:50that new house okay so the 28th 28 okay so you're thinking these were all thrown in at the same time
22:57right i think because the window of opportunity to throw the suitcases over the chesapeake bay bridge
23:05is so narrow they have to go over and i think at the same time spanning the chesapeake bay is the
23:13chesapeake bay bridge it is 17 miles long with two one mile tunnels and there are specific pull-off spots
23:22there's no cameras on the bridge so it wouldn't take much to pull over on the side get the suitcases
23:29out of the back of the car and flip it right on over melanie suggested bill's gambling may have
23:39resulted in him being murdered and dumped in the water investigators have to follow up on that information
23:46bill was known to put a couple bucks on the ponies as they said but anyone who understands gambling knows
23:55people don't always hit it big they lose and they lose big this is what happens in gambling you get
24:01into debt and he might have been in a gambling debt and went and got money someplace else
24:07for instance an organized crime member and generally speaking will someone get murdered yeah absolutely
24:16the next day i get a phone call from my department from virginia beach saying we've located bill mcguire's
24:24vehicle the vehicle is located in atlantic city so we immediately drive to atlantic city
24:35we respond to this motel called the flamingo motel
24:39this motel this motel is not on the main strip it's one of these no-tell motel kind of places
24:45talking to the management we discovered that atlantic city forensics towed the vehicle to their facility
24:52we also know they have security cameras
24:56detective piquel arranges to have the security footage picked up then heads to the forensic lab to
25:02examine the car investigators meticulously searched this vehicle in the front passenger seat there was
25:11two brochures one from atlantic city and one from virginia beach almost look staged
25:19we continue our search and there's a clear vial of liquid in the glove box with a syringe
25:31i remember looking at it like that's uh kind of odd that would be sent off for analysis
25:37police did trace evidence on the floorboard of the vehicle and they were able to recover skin cells
25:48these were particles from subcutaneous muscle and bone deep inside the only way that they're
25:55going to come out of the body is through some sort of force trauma dismemberment of a body is messy
26:04if you use a saw there is a lot of skin and blood and tissue matter that is going to be flying
26:10throughout the air landing on various surfaces this image of human sawdust is very visceral right
26:16because it's like you know what sawdust is you put a two by four down you start so even if you're
26:23keeping things really clean you're going to at some point walk through that biological dust these skin
26:31cells got attached to the driver of that car who transferred it to the floorboard of bill mcguire's vehicle
26:41this is a huge piece of evidence it tells us that somebody who was involved in that murder
26:49was the driver of that car
26:51after finding human sawdust in bill mcguire's car investigators send the samples to the lab for
27:02processing it seems that whoever drove that car may have staged it to look like bill met his demise
27:08at the casino the next day we were able to get the security footage off of the flamingo motel's
27:17security equipment bill's car was seen driven to a particular spot and an individual leaves that
27:27vehicle but because there was some kind of a security light shining at the camera you could not
27:36make out the person that was driving without any solid identification from the surveillance footage
27:43investigators turned to the lab results the skin cells actually came back to bill mcguire
27:53at this point the theory that he was murdered because of his gambling habits is losing steam
27:58with investigators if it's a lob hit they wouldn't have left any evidence behind in this case you have
28:05the bullets the bone dust and a hypodermic needle and syringe and of course the surveillance video
28:13it suggests an amateur killer which leads detectives back to the one suspect still on their radar
28:21melanie mcguire
28:25we learned that melanie had just moved completely out of the apartment where she and bill were living
28:31we contacted the management and they gave us permission to search the apartment
28:37when we walked in it was absolutely spotless and smelt of fresh paint
28:48i'm thinking somebody left that apartment so clean that maybe somebody's trying to hide something
28:54where could a dismemberment happen how about upstairs in the big stall shower
29:02police comb every single inch of that bathroom
29:06they even take out the drain pipe it's not just absent of blood and bone it's absent of
29:15everything in a shower you'd expect to see oh some hair some soap soapy stuff on the floor
29:22now this shower is spotless we didn't find any evidential value of processing that apartment
29:33with no new evidence from the apartment law enforcement returns to the blanket found in
29:38one of the suitcases and discovers a surprising link to melanie mcguire in the 30-inch suitcase where the torso
29:45head and hands were was a medical blanket
29:49and the tag was still on the blanket and the tag said hcsc wouldn't you know it hcsc materials linens
30:02and bedding were utilized in the practice where melanie worked
30:08detectives meet with melanie's boss dr bradley miller who runs the fertility clinic where she worked
30:14detectives press dr miller about the white medical blanket found inside one of the suitcases he vehemently
30:21denies knowing anything about it however what he did tell them was an entirely different story
30:29dr miller told investigators he was having an affair with melanie mcguire
30:38there's some details about when the affair started that are particularly salacious
30:42we find out that they started their affair when she was actually pregnant
30:51and it was a two-year-long sort of affair where they had kind of talked about leaving their
30:56respective spouses but you know they couldn't really figure it out because that would be really
31:01messy sin kind of situation he had a family she had a family what were they going to do
31:06you dr miller never um i believe was going to leave his wife for miss mcguire and i think miss
31:14mcguire hoped that you know someone would come in and save her but he insists that he had nothing
31:21to do with bill mcguire's death and he doesn't appear willing to say anything else dr miller could be
31:27an accomplice we know she was having an affair with dr miller and it was a blanket utilized in the practice
31:38as detectives finish with dr miller they're suspicious but without more evidence their hands
31:44are tied but detectives get lab results from the mystery liquid found in bill mcguire's car
31:51leading to another shocking connection it was chloral hydrate which is a sedative often used in
31:58medical practices police tracked down the prescription for chloral hydrate written by dr bradley miller
32:09why would bill mcguire have this sedative in his blood box this is an intoxicant that would
32:16have incapacitated bill mcguire his defenses would have been gone is dr miller the mastermind of this
32:23brutal murder or are they in it together he's a man he's strong enough to lift suitcases full of body
32:32parts and of course he has the medical knowledge to do a dismemberment and he just happened to be in
32:39an intimate relationship with the victim's wife dr miller was in love with melanie mcguire dr miller has
32:48motive
32:57not only was melanie mcguire working for dr bradley miller it came out that she was having a multi-year
33:05affair with dr miller there's all kinds of motives for murder but to me someone deeply in love with
33:14another person that provides a special kind of desire to kill the spouse
33:24detectives questioned dr miller about the prescription for chloral hydrate
33:28that he denies writing it but he does confess to police that melanie sometimes wrote prescriptions
33:35and forged his signature we believe the murder took place on april 28th or april 29th the first
33:44suitcase appeared on may 5th the doctor claims he can provide proof of his whereabouts during that
33:50entire window of time bradley didn't believe that melanie could have done it you have this slight young
33:59woman accused of a brutal murder and the dismemberment of her husband it defies expectations it defies
34:07the common human experience investigators again approached dr miller his alibi had checked out but
34:15they were shocked to learn that he was still carrying on an affair with melanie at this point the
34:20investigators turn up the heat on dr miller and they ask for his assistance and he agrees to wear a wire
34:27and conversations with melanie after 10 months of building their case detectives secure the
34:35cooperation of dr miller and obtain a warrant for a wiretap we set up the electronic devices to listen
34:43to miss mcguire's conversation we listened to over hundreds of phone calls of miss mcguire some to
34:50uh dr miller i think part of him was trying to find out that did did it actually happen could it be
34:57true is this woman capable of murder it is now 2 30 p.m may 31st 2005 brad miller making an outgoing call to
35:10melanie mcguire the wiretaps went on for months i mean if you want us to stick together i got to know
35:30everything now but we weren't hearing a confession from melanie well melanie had another gentleman in
35:45her life named james finn james finn knew melanie from nursing school i think jim probably looked at
35:52her as a potential uh girlfriend but james was in the friend zone and when he learned of her
35:59relationship with dr miller he began to assist investigators in this case james finn told
36:07investigators that melanie had approached him about buying her a gun because she needed protection from her
36:15husband
36:38what struck me is the cold and callousness
36:43of miss mcguire in her tone in those conversations i want you to tell me the truth
37:00now the body did give us the bullets but without a gun to compare them to it's useless
37:05if melanie mcguire came from new jersey and dumped bodies at the chesapeake bay bridge she could have
37:13tossed that gun anywhere out on that stretch of road the police check every gun shop in the area
37:21looking for anyone that may have sold melanie a gun in new jersey it's very hard to buy a firearm you
37:28have to have a background check it's easier to buy a gun in another state like pennsylvania
37:34detectives expand their search of gun stores and they get a huge break there was a receipt that
37:40was found that showed that miss mcguire purchased the gun in pennsylvania not just any gun a 38 caliber
37:47gun the same caliber of bullets that were found inside bill mcguire
38:01investigators have tracked down a gun shop in palmerton pennsylvania just two hours away from
38:07the mcguire home where they believe that melanie mcguire purchased a 38 revolver and a box of bullets
38:19when police went to the gun shop in pennsylvania the owner immediately was able to recognize
38:24melanie because he's like we don't get a lot of women in here right so she just kind of like stood
38:29out the gun owner remembers melanie coming in two days before the murder and she used a pennsylvania
38:37driver's license that license she used traced back to her aunt in east stroudsburg pennsylvania so
38:43melanie purchased a gun two days before the murder and took efforts to cover up her residence and bought
38:53the gun out of state highly suspicious highly circumstantial
39:00hey mel say please stop at my parents house today okay they were looking for you okay apparently
39:08there was a gun store in palmerton and your name was on a receipt from having purchased a gun about
39:14a year ago okay and they were looking for you all right is there anything i should know
39:23not particularly on june 2nd 2005 more than a year after her husband's murder
39:31velanie mcguire is arrested while dropping her children off at school she is immediately booked
39:37and charged with first degree murder after she was arrested that's where we ended up doing a search
39:45warrant on melanie mcguire's computer and when we were searching it we found an interesting thing
39:53she was searching how to get away with murder certain intoxicants that would incapacitate a person
40:01how to get a gun that's pretty good circumstance if you ask me melanie has the medical knowledge
40:09to do a relatively clean dismemberment and there's a strong personal motive for killing her husband
40:17in spring of 2007 melanie goes on trial for the murder of her husband they never found the bloody
40:27crime scene they never found that gun they never found that crucial piece of dna evidence that they
40:34could definitively say yeah murder happened here and melanie mcguire did it so when you stand before that
40:41jury a circumstantial case is made by telling a story a compelling story that's what you do you run
40:49right through we know she was having an affair with dr miller purchasing a gun the possession of
40:56hydrochlorine her matching suitcase luggage her easy pass records going down south
41:01melanie mcguire was ultimately convicted of murder and she was sentenced to life in prison
41:10there's a special place in hell for someone who's capable of carrying out this kind of planning and
41:18never walking away how do you ever look these children in the face and say not only did i kill
41:25your father i planned it for weeks how callous for five years this was a really big part of our lives
41:35it was a really hard time for all parties involved i've kind of left it in the past
41:41there are multiple tragedies in this right the destruction of a family at the heart of it
41:46children who had to grow up with no mother or father and there's no way that they're ever going
41:50to be made a whole bill was eviscerated by melanie with lie after lie after lie bill mcguire was a
41:58good friend he was a great brother he was a wonderful father and people need to hear that and so that's
42:05part of trying to give back to the family not only justice that melanie mcguire is going to get punished
42:11for her evil acts but justice to give back this man's good name
