00:00what a day welcome everyone to a special edition of couch potato diary uh my name is peter klein
00:21thank you very much for hanging out as the toronto blue jays make one of the biggest splashes of the
00:26offseason probably the biggest splash of the offseason so far as they have signed dylan cease
00:31to a contract uh this was not in a lot of the rumored plans for the blue jays at this particular
00:39time um so a bit of a surprising move today coming from toronto but the news coming down
00:45just a little bit ago um as uh yes dylan cease the announcement uh has signed with the toronto
00:52blue jays this from jeff passan um an agreement on a seven-year 210 million dollar deal pending a
00:59physical sources tell espn the defending american league champions get one of the best arms on the
01:05free agent market so obviously a lot happening there one defending american league champions has
01:12a pretty good ring to it doesn't it doesn't it like we kind of gonna gonna milk that one a lot
01:17i think this year um but that's really cool that this is just a thing that is happening that uh that
01:23we get to say about the toronto blue jays um but this is a major move for toronto that there's no
01:28doubt about it this is people have been saying that this is a front office that will look to go all in
01:35now that the the team got so close and we've heard that before as blue jays fans haven't we we've heard
01:44a few times like oh yeah no they're they're in on this guy they're in on that guy but this is
01:48absolutely putting it out there that the blue jays are open for business because this is a big contract
01:54for dylan cease um seeing a few people saying overpay and things like that espn's projection
02:01had it at five years at around i think it was like 140 ish it was 29 million dollar aav so i guess
02:09that would be 145 i guess right no i'm off on that either way doesn't matter um they had it around
02:1429 million dollar aav at five years i'm sorry that i can't do that math on the fly but so this is more
02:20years at just a little bit extra term so um or a little bit extra dollar amount so i i guess maybe a
02:28touch of an overpay but this is this is what you do when you are in your championship window is you go
02:35out and you try to just get the best players that you can and toronto is certainly doing that uh with
02:42dylan cease for those who are unfamiliar uh the stats here from fan graphs uh for those watching
02:47uh on the live stream or i guess watching the video after the fact uh last season with the padres
02:52eight and 12 we don't love that 168 innings pitched been 11.52 k per nine um the the era right
03:00around 4.55 but the fip and xfip right at 3.56 kind of in line where a few other of those are
03:08throughout his career we see babbip wise maybe a little bit more on the unlucky side and if that
03:15can kind of normalize again with one of the the better defensive teams in baseball with a guy who
03:21can strike out dudes at that type of a rate it's to me that's the type of a player that you bet on that
03:29those are the types of numbers that you try to just kind of lock in with a starting rotation with
03:35a defense like toronto has so i i'm excited about the move i i really am for the blue jays um
03:41for the people who are crying overpay and everything like that i want to especially in
03:46baseball i want to be abundantly clear with this i don't give a fuck i don't it's money like
03:53salary cap next year might be a problem if uh if that's something that actually gets implemented but
03:58for now i could give a fuck if you're spending too much money on a starting pitcher i want the blue
04:05jays to win and this is a win now move it is a move that makes them better than they were
04:12three hours ago before they made this signing um it gives you just a solid rotation now with
04:19beyond solid this is one of the best rotations in baseball now with gosman at the top and we can
04:27quibble about order or anything like that but gosman yasavage bieber cease and jose barrios i am
04:34still a little skeptical as to whether barrios will start the season as a toronto blue jay um
04:42his absence was noted from all of the things that were happening around the jays and that that playoff
04:48run when there were a number of other injured players who were hanging around and barrios obviously
04:52did not take kindly to being demoted to the bullpen after the back part of the season so i i just i
04:58wonder about that relationship going forward but this is one of the best rotations in baseball now
05:04obviously when you look at what the dodgers can throw out there with yamamoto and snell and glass
05:08now and otani and all of those cats that's really good as well but looking at the american league
05:13i don't think you can compete with that um cole coming back for the yankees with rodon but you're
05:21kind of hoping for best case scenario out of him freed hoping for again like yankees have a very good
05:26rotation i don't want it to get you know it's not like the blue jays are head and shoulders above
05:31everybody but you one through five that's one of the best rotations maybe the best rotation in the
05:37american league it moves lower into a bit of a long relief spot start sort of a thing and gives you
05:44another lefty option out of the bullpen where he was very solid at least in the 18 innings game for
05:49the blue jays in the world series so i i love this move for toronto um this is again like passin says in
05:58the tweet it's one of the best arms that's available and now every single night barring injury of course
06:05but every single night you are going out there with a starting pitcher who you would feel comfortable
06:11in any playoff setting you know and like we were when the playoffs were going on with the blue jays
06:17um scherzer was great we weren't exactly confident about that you know like the game what was the game
06:23three uh game three game four game four of the american league division series the blue jays were going
06:31with a bullpen game that's where this rotate like i get like scherzer came on and he was great and all
06:36of that but toronto had three starters that they trusted and then a fourth that they really hoped
06:41and it worked in a couple of instances right but now like you look at that rotation let me just pull
06:48it up again for those watching um live or watching the video after burrios i understand it wasn't great
06:55last year but when all four when all five of these guys are at their best i trust all of them in a
07:02playoff game i trust all of them as potential like when again when all are at their best all five of
07:09those guys that are on the screen gosman yasavage bieber c spurrios all five could be a game one
07:16starter for me in a playoff series and i'm feeling pretty good about it so if this year doesn't go the
07:22glorious way for toronto the way it did a season ago and the blue jays are just a wild card team
07:30or something like that you know like if that ends up being the case and it's just a wild card well
07:36one of the things we were worried about with the wild card with toronto was you have to use gosman
07:40yasavage bieber in a wild card round and now we're getting into i don't trust you territory already
07:46with the rotation if you have to go gosman bieber yasavage in a wild card round and
07:51oh i'm so excited we're dropping microphones and dylan zeese is your game one starter
07:58oh well dylan zeese is my game one starter like this just this is a fantastic move for toronto
08:07is it a touch of an overpay probably is that going to be every free agent contract in baseball
08:13yeah it absolutely is when you just stick to projections and when you just stick to well this
08:20guy that the math says this guy is worth this so we're only going to pay this that's a great way
08:24of coming in second on every free agent that you go after the blue jays are in their window and so
08:32to me this is this is a win now move if they win the world series next year this contract frame it in
08:38gold and put it up around the rogers center who cares um i i just this team is ready to win a
08:44championship and this is showing everyone that hey we're not going away we're not gonna be a one
08:50hit wonder here and another aspect of this is i think pete walker i know there have been some
08:56criticism uh criticisms of him but pete walker gets a lot out of guys with this level of talent
09:03right when you look at robbie ray how much he got out of a guy like steven matts um he has gosman now
09:09on the best stretch of his career and looking at this with um with cease i this feels like the type
09:18of guy that pete walker can absolutely get the most out of for toronto so i again i cannot stress this
09:25part enough i love this move for toronto to have that rotation set up in that way um absolutely
09:34fantastic work for for toronto um that that rotation is dangerous now this is the the nature
09:42of the beast but it is not simply okay we got dylan cease done um there is still the boba shet of it
09:52all i do still think that there needs to be another impact made on the starting lineup where we did the
09:57preview episode about the um the starting rotation or sorry about the offseason and i wanted bellinger
10:05as well um so obviously i'm getting greedy i didn't think they would go this hard in the pitching
10:10market um i i was wondering if it would be maybe uh kind of one of the secondary guys and with bassett
10:20or scherzer or anything like that so i i do maybe have to recalibrate things if if getting cease means
10:30no bichette or bellinger or something like that then i start to have some concerns about the overpay and
10:35everything there but um if you are still able to bring in an impact bat whether it is bow or it's not
10:42him and it's bellinger or something along those lines um then this this becomes again um i i
10:50if you don't get one it sucks if you do then a fantastic offseason for toronto i still don't
10:56want them to spend too much in the uh bullpen market i kind of thought they'd address honestly
11:01the pitching rotation via trade so this is again just kind of changing my um calibrations i guess
11:09a little bit on where i thought the offense or sorry the offseason was going for toronto but i love
11:14this i love this move for the blue jays and again just showing the world that look this was not
11:19a one-off man we are we're coming for it again this season and they are coming out of the gates
11:25firing away with this move excellent excellent work for the toronto blue jays and their front office
11:33here um yeah this is this is massive on it um just sorry just i i'm in a group chat and there's a bunch
11:42of people messaging about it um and so i was a little bit concerned that there was a oh jokes this was
11:46actually just a fake blubbidi blubbidi blue uh no this is everyone is confirming it uh ken rosenthal
11:52john hayman was the first on this one so apologies coming out with the um um coming out with the pass
11:59and tweet but excellent move for toronto i i like this one i don't for baseball i don't care if like
12:06dollar amount overpaid i don't care um there's no salary cap as of right now and the blue jays are
12:16owned by the largest telecom company in canada and they just had an unbelievable run you spend this is
12:22your moment to go out and be aggressive and just make a good team great this is the blue jays making
12:28a good team great so excellent work for toronto again as they sign dylan cease to a seven year
12:35contract worth 210 million dollars uh for those watching live we're gonna call it here um this was
