00:00What is truth? We don't know that, we don't, what exists? Does any of this exist?
00:06So, what is even happening right now?
00:09Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're re-explaining the ending of Wake Up Dead Man, A Knives Out Mystery,
00:16unpacking its deeper meaning and themes.
00:18Naturally, you should watch the film first, because otherwise, spoilers.
00:23This goes way beyond normal police work.
00:26This is something even I have not experienced.
00:30Wake Up Dead Man is a locked room mystery, in which a seemingly impossible crime occurs
00:34in a confined space that a perpetrator somehow infiltrates.
00:38The film references classic locked room mysteries like John Dixon Carr's The Hollow Man,
00:43Sheridan Le Fanu's A Passage in the Secret History of an Irish Countess,
00:47and Edgar Allan Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue,
00:50have been cited as the first locked room mysteries ever written.
00:54But what happened that night?
00:55There's not a much, much larger scheme.
01:01Yet there's arguably another that predates them all, the Bible, specifically Matthew 28,
01:06when Jesus' tomb is found empty.
01:08This case is solvable, right?
01:10I'm incapable of not solving a crime.
01:13Oh, you'll see.
01:14It's fun.
01:14Okay, that's a stretch, but it is technically a mystery that happened in a concealed room.
01:20While some believe the body was stolen, Jesus appears to his disciples,
01:24which is all the proof they need of his miraculous resurrection.
01:27A man gives a sermon.
01:33He then, in plain sight of everyone, walks into a sealed concrete box.
01:40And 30 seconds later, that man is lying dead.
01:44Of course, Monsignor Jefferson Wicks is far from a Christ-like figure.
01:48He doesn't even have a cross hanging in his church,
01:51serving as a reminder of his shamed mother, Grace,
01:54who died desperately seeking the diamond, Eve's apple.
01:57Wicks' father took the diamond's whereabouts to his grave,
02:00in more ways than one.
02:02But we're getting ahead of ourselves.
02:04One other person knew where Wicks Sr. stashed the jewel.
02:07As a little girl,
02:08Martha Delacroix saw Wicks consume the forbidden fruit before dying.
02:12Who killed Monsignor Wicks?
02:13Who killed Monsignor Wicks?
02:14All right, stop!
02:16Here's what's gonna happen.
02:17Demlock, Frick and Blanc, and I are gonna ask you all some questions,
02:19and you're gonna ask them, and we're gonna get to the bottom.
02:21Who killed Monsignor Wicks, and why?
02:24Rather than share this information with Grace,
02:26Martha taunted her before she too died.
02:29Martha carried this guilt into adulthood,
02:31getting it off her chest in confession.
02:34What Martha didn't realize was that she confessed to Monsignor Wicks,
02:37who now knows the diamond's location.
02:39This isn't the only discovery Wicks recently unearthed,
02:52as Cy Draven is revealed to be his illegitimate son.
02:55Using Eve's apple,
02:56Draven plans to fund his political career with his father by his side.
03:00Wicks decides to leave his church and his faithful flock,
03:03who would have followed him to hell.
03:05That was until he threatened to destroy all of them.
03:08You don't understand this case.
03:10You need to look at the myth that's being constructed.
03:13This gave everyone a motive when Wicks walked into another room during a sermon,
03:18suddenly dropping dead on Good Friday.
03:20Dr. Nat Sharp discovers a knife in Wicks' back with a red devil head.
03:24While many people had a reason for wanting Wicks dead,
03:27all of the suspects were in the adjacent room when it happened.
03:30It's a case that only Benoit Blanc can crack.
03:37Blanc receives help from Reverend Judd Duplentesy,
03:40who is himself a suspect.
03:42While Duplentesy has a violent past,
03:44he's dedicated his life to redemption and helping others.
03:47Who killed Monsignor Wicks, and why?
03:50And then, that's it!
03:54Now, who wants to go first?
03:56Where Duplentesy wants to bring people together,
03:59Wicks got a kick out of dividing them,
04:01only thinking about himself.
04:03Although morally superior to Wicks,
04:06Duplentesy is no angel himself,
04:08still prone to violent outbursts when pushed too far.
04:11It appears Wicks might have brought out Duplentesy's inner devil
04:14when Blanc deduces that the Reverend took the victim's flask,
04:17which went missing from the crime scene.
04:19The small space where Wicks took his dying breath
04:21isn't the only locked room mystery.
04:23A few days after Wicks dies, around Easter Sunday,
04:27another resurrection supposedly takes place.
04:30Okay, you're freaking me out now.
04:32Wicks was buried alongside his father in a sealed tomb.
04:36As Duplentesy runs through the courtyard on a rainy night,
04:39the tomb opens, and Monsignor Wicks seemingly emerges.
04:43There's some scooby-doo shit going on here.
04:46The mysterious figure punches Duplentesy's lights out.
04:50When he awakens, Duplentesy finds the body of Samson,
04:53the groundskeeper by his side.
04:55Everyone thinks I did it.
04:56I didn't do it.
04:57While the evidence against Duplentesy is piling up,
05:00Blanc eventually turns his attention to the real culprit,
05:03Dr. Sharp,
05:04whose skeleton is discovered in his basement,
05:07alongside Wicks' unearthed corpse.
05:09Blanc pieces together that Sharp poisoned Wicks' flask.
05:12The blood and red devil head were already planted on Wicks before he died,
05:16being triggered after he took a swig from his flask.
05:20Sharp proceeded to insert the knife while inspecting the body.
05:23Although Sharp was unable to reclaim the flask before Duplentesy got to it,
05:27everything else was going to plan.
05:29What is truth?
05:30We don't know that.
05:31We don't...
05:31What exists?
05:32Does any of this exist?
05:34Sharp didn't work alone.
05:36An unsuspecting Samson was convinced to be buried in the tomb in Wicks' place.
05:40Once inside, Samson grabbed Eve's apple from Wicks' senior skeleton,
05:44where it had lain all these decades.
05:46A security camera would capture Samson, disguised as Wicks,
05:50emerging from the tomb, making it look like a miracle.
05:53What they didn't count on was Duplentesy arriving on the scene.
05:57Samson knocked Duplentesy out before he got a good look at his face,
06:00but Sharp wasn't content sharing Eve's apple.
06:03He stabbed Samson and set the unconscious Duplentesy up as the murderer.
06:07A perfectly impossible crime.
06:12This case is solvable, right?
06:14I'm incapable of not solving a crime.
06:17So you'll see.
06:18Yet there's still the matter of how Sharp ended up in a tub with his flesh melted off.
06:22Blanc has the explanation, but he chooses not to say it.
06:26For man or reason, this is the Holy Grail.
06:30Although Blanc isn't a man of faith,
06:31his experience with Duplentesy has shown him how religion can have a positive effect on people.
06:36In the hands of greedy and manipulative false prophets like Wicks,
06:40it can be weaponized.
06:42With a leader like Duplentesy showing people the way, though,
06:45it can bring comfort, redemption, and closure.
06:48Blanc thus decides to let the only remaining accomplice confess.
06:52Once the other suspects exit the church,
06:54Martha spills her soul to Duplentesy and Blanc.
06:57She conspired with Sharp to kill Wicks and take Eve's apple.
07:01Wicks had a vast family fortune.
07:03Killing Samson wasn't part of the plan.
07:08Martha had convinced Samson to participate in the scheme.
07:11He went along, no questions asked.
07:13Samson placed his faith in Martha,
07:15who felt as if she had let an innocent man down.
07:18Martha knew that if Sharp killed Samson, she'd follow.
07:21Dropping by Sharp's house,
07:23Martha pieced together that he spiked her tea.
07:25With his back turned, Martha switched the glasses,
07:28causing Sharp to inadvertently poison himself.
07:30She disposed of the body and snatched Eve's apple.
07:33But Martha can't live with what she's done.
07:36Blanc can see in Martha's eyes that she's poisoned herself.
07:39As much as Blanc enjoys explaining things,
07:41he gives Martha the courtesy of being able to confess her greatest sins before departing this earth.
07:46Martha's fate is similar to that of Ernestine in The Hollow Man.
07:55In that novel, the housekeeper is revealed to have been an accomplice.
07:58She confesses her involvement before taking her life.
08:01The only loose end is what Martha did with Eve's apple.
08:04Duplentisi and Blanc needn't look far,
08:06as Martha drops it after she succumbs to the poison.
08:10Blanc chooses to turn a blind eye,
08:11letting Duplentisi decide what to do with Eve's apple.
08:14The diamond might be Cy Draven's inheritance,
08:17but he'll surely use it to buy as many votes as possible as he climbs the political ladder.
08:22Duplentisi has seen how men like Wick's can ruin lives,
08:25even with a small platform.
08:27Draven would continue his father's example on a national scale.

08:53Although Draven and his attorneys are suspicious,
08:57they can't prove that Duplentisi took the apple.
08:59Duplentisi resists the temptation to use the diamond for his own gain.
09:03Like the actual apple that Eve bit into,
09:05it's better left untouched by all.
09:08The impossible crime.
09:10Taking over Wick's church,
09:12Duplentisi finally constructs a large cross to hang.
09:15Inside the heart of Jesus lies Eve's apple,
09:18which is where it shall remain.
09:19In doing so, Duplentisi also brings Grace back into the church.
09:23There's just one more mystery.
09:25Where was Hugh Grant's Philip during all of this?
09:27We gotta get him to at least make another cameo in the fourth film.
09:31Yes, is this Benoit Blanc's residence?
09:35Um, what is this regarding?
09:36Well, his office was closed and I really need to speak with him.
09:41It's urgent.
09:42Please.
09:45Blanc?
09:46Is someone here for you?
