00:03Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the Broadway productions
00:08that seemed designed for Tony Awards glory, but were largely left out in the cold.
00:20Number 10. Bring Back Birdie. You can reunite the original creative dream team,
00:26cast Broadway royalty like Chita Rivera, and even try to bottle the magic of a beloved classic.
00:32But sequels are a tricky beast.
00:35They've been married for 20 years, and Birdie has put on weight. And they can't find him,
00:44but I think it's The Sullivan Show is still interested in bringing him back, and the story
00:49is about that, about finding him, which they do out West.
00:54Bring Back Birdie is the ultimate cautionary tale, a follow-up that tried and failed to recapture
00:59the charm of Bye Bye Birdie. Critics pounced on it, calling it dated and unnecessary,
01:04and even Rivera's powerhouse performance, which still earned her a Tony nod, couldn't save the
01:10show from disaster. You see, so we're trying to, well, Albert is trying to get him back
01:16to do one television show, sort of like what Dick Clark did years ago with getting certain people
01:21back, and we have to find him. I don't want to do it, but Albert wants to. It's a lot
01:26of trouble,
01:26and our children have gotten into, my daughter's in Mahari Krishna, and my son is in a rock band.
01:32After just four performances, the curtain fell for good, cementing its legacy as one of Broadway's
01:38most infamous and unfortunate misfires. It was Bye Bye Birdie for good.
01:49Number 9. Breakfast at Tiffany's. Sometimes, the scent of Tony gold is so strong that a show
01:55collapses under its own glitzy ambitions before the overture even plays.
01:59If I found a real-life place that made me feel like Tiffany's, I'd buy some furniture and get the
02:06cat a neck. Breakfast at Tiffany's had all the makings of a Broadway smash. Mary Tyler Moore
02:11and Richard Chamberlain headlining, a script by the legendary Edward Albee, and enough backstage
02:17drama to fill a Capote novel. Producers threw money at problem after problem, swapping out creative
02:23teams and rewriting scripts on the fly, but it seemed this show was destined for failure.
02:28Chaos in Asia, all within reach.
02:31She's not the only human calamity on the beach.
02:36Indeed, in the end, it never even made it to opening night, shuddering in a cloud of infamy.
02:42Nope, this crowd was not crazy about Tiffany's.
02:45It's very similar to the tone of the book. I would say it's deeper than the film. If you're
02:50looking to see kind of a romantic comedy played out in a play, this probably wasn't it.
02:56Number 8. Love Never Dies. Andrew Lloyd Webber knows a thing or two about Spectacle, but even
03:02the maestro himself isn't immune to, to quote him, a costly mistake.
03:07Bastion Bella, Bastion Bella is a snarky name that they call me.
03:12Love Never Dies, the much-hyped sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, promised to be a lush,
03:18operatic juggernaut ready to sweep the Tonys.
03:21My broken soul can't be alive, oh, till I hear you sing once more.
03:34But following one of the most successful musicals of all time is a nearly impossible act, and
03:39this one stumbled right out of the gate, even earning the nickname Paint Never Dries. While
03:45London audiences gave it a polite round of applause, American theatergoers and critics were left
03:50bewildered by the tangled plot and melodramatic excess.
03:53Is there music in your head? Have you followed where it's led? And been grazed with a taste
03:59of the beauty underneath?
04:01This brought the chandelier crashing down on plans for a Broadway run.
04:20Number 7. The Pirate Queen. When the masterminds behind Les Miserables set sail with a new historical
04:27epic, we braced for another tidal wave of Tony glory.
04:37The Pirate Queen boasted a blockbuster budget, a soaring score, and Stephanie J. Block at the helm.
04:44On paper, it was a treasure trove. In reality, audiences got a show that felt more like a ship
04:49lost at sea. Bloated, repetitive, and missing the emotional punch that made its creators legends.
05:01Despite its lavish production and prestige pedigree, the show failed to win over Tony voters or fill
05:07seats. With no nominations, dwindling crowds, and a reported $16 million loss, the Pirate Queen
05:13was forced to abandon ship after just a few months.
05:16Am I to be just woman? No, not I.
05:25Number 6. Rocky the Musical. Let's just say it loud for the folks all the way at the back
05:30of the balcony. Not every hit movie needs a Broadway makeover.
05:34Rocky a musical? I mean, how's that gonna happen?
05:37Well, it definitely sounded, I think, to me and also to the writers like an unlikely idea.
05:43Case in point, Rocky the Musical. This show is best remembered for its jaw-dropping final boxing match,
05:49where the stage literally rolled into the audience for a ringside experience.
05:53Sure, it scored a few technical nods, but when it came to the big prizes, the show was left on
05:58the ropes.
05:59Rocky the Musical ends with an electrifying 20-minute championship fight sequence.
06:04Audience members in the front rows are relocated on stage, so the ring can take center stage.
06:10Critics lamented the loss of the original film's gritty heart, replaced by an extravagant, soulless spectacle.
06:17It's a textbook case of Broadway betting on bells and whistles instead of a knockout story,
06:21and audiences weren't impressed.
06:24Let the lights, no survivors come to pray in the night. Let me watch you, come slow in the eye.
06:32Number 5. The Queen of Versailles.
06:34With Kristin Chenoweth in the lead and music by the legendary Stephen Schwartz,
06:38the Queen of Versailles seemed like a shoe-in for awards season.
06:42And caviar dreams.
06:50The buzz was deafening, promising a glittering send-up of the ultra-rich and their gilded excess.
06:56But somewhere between the chandeliers and the champagne, the show lost its footing.
07:07Critics praised Chenoweth's star turn and Schwartz's melodies, but largely agreed that it felt like the story didn't know what
07:13it actually wanted to say.
07:15The swirl of political controversy, earning it the nickname the MAGA musical, did not help either.
07:21In the end, the hype fizzled, and the show's awards dreams evaporated faster than a glass of Dom at a
07:26billionaire's bash.
07:36Number 4. Dance of the Vampires.
07:39There was a time when vampires ruled pop culture, but for Broadway fans, they just didn't have enough bite to
07:45last the season.
07:46Dance of the Vampires should have been this campy, gothic masterpiece, but the investors really took a stake to the
07:52heart.
08:00Starring Michael Crawford in his return to the stage after the Phantom of the Opera.
08:04It had all the makings of a major event.
08:07Instead, audiences got a show with a script as muddled as a midnight fog, and a tone that couldn't pick
08:12a lane.
08:13I hardly know myself. Sometimes, I look in the mirror, and I wonder, where have I gone?
08:22It may have set out to be a parody, but it became a parody in itself. Talk about a total
08:27eclipse of the art.
08:29There's nothing you can do. A total eclipse of the art.
08:35No.
08:37Number 3. Tammy Faye.
08:39Transferring from the West End with a pedigree of critical acclaim, Tammy Faye was expected to make a splash on
08:45the American stage.
08:46The light of the world is electric. Let it shine in mankind's eyes.
08:54The show explored the rise and fall of the famous televangelist, promising a deep look at a polarizing figure.
09:00But when the curtain rose in New York, the magic didn't quite translate.
09:13Critics and audiences found the story messy and the characters thin, despite the show's high-gloss production and creative firepower.
09:20The Tony nominations never materialized, and the show's quick exit, and a reported $25 million loss, prove that even the
09:28most celebrated imports can sink fast if they don't connect with the Broadway faithful.
09:39Number 2. The Great Gatsby.
09:42When word spread that The Great Gatsby was getting the Broadway treatment, it felt like the ultimate Tony bait.
09:47Glamorous, ambitious, and dripping with jazz-age sparkle.
09:58The production pulled out all the stops, dazzling sets, a pop-driven score, and enough razzle-dazzle to make Daisy
10:05Buchanan blush.
10:06But critics quickly saw through the glitter, lamenting the show's obsession with spectacle over the soul of Fitzgerald's classic.
10:21Instead of high art, audiences got a commercial juggernaut that missed the heart of the story.
10:26Turns out audiences still want a healthy dose of substance along with their style.
10:30Still, if nothing else, it did get a generation of TikTokers interested in musical theater.
10:35Alright, let's try it with music, shall we?
10:37Let's do it.
10:39Be kind.
10:40Be kind.

11:16Number 1.
11:18Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark.
11:20No countdown of Tony Bate disasters would be complete without the granddaddy of them all.
11:25I'm a 65 million dollar circus tragedy.
11:29With a budget that could bankroll a Marvel movie, a score by U2, and a director famous for avant-garde
11:36spectacle, this show was supposed to change Broadway forever.
11:40Instead, it became legendary for all the wrong reasons, dangerous stunts, endless delays, and a backstage saga more dramatic than
11:48anything on stage.
11:49But last fall, when the musical version of Spider-Man previewed on Broadway, it was plagued with problems.
11:55Performers were seriously injured.
11:57Reviews were dreadful.
11:59By opening night, the show's reputation was so radioactive that award committees largely kept their distance.
12:05A handful of technical nods aside, Spider-Man was left in the dark, serving as a permanent warning about getting
12:11caught up in a web of over-ambition and runaway budgets.
12:24Do you have any other musicals you consider to be Tony Bate?
12:28Or do you think any of these were wrongfully snubbed?
