"Everything I've done has been about humanity," Gervais said of his work, including his recent Netflix series. "Everything I've done has been quite existential."

00:00Who cares about toilet rolls? That was day one!
00:04Ricky Gervais is opening up with Trevor Noah about the uncertainty around living in a pandemic
00:08and finding the humanity in his work. The comedian appeared on the latest installment
00:12of the daily social distancing show with Trevor Noah and discussed his time in quarantine as
00:17well as his Netflix series Afterlife. When asked how he's been holding up, Gervais explained that
00:21things like having a garden, playing badminton and drinking by 6pm every night has been keeping
00:26him busy and admitted that apart from his own tour being postponed, the shelter-in-place
00:30orders have not impacted his daily routine. Gervais did acknowledge, however, that he knows
00:35that he has it easy compared to most. Joking aside, you won't hear me complain. Not when
00:40there's nurses doing 14-hour shifts, risking their lives. Speaking of the UK sentiment toward
00:45the pandemic, Gervais said that having no end date in sight has been difficult for a lot
00:49of people to wrap their heads around. It's like it turns into kids. We keep going, are we
00:53there yet? Are we there yet? And no one knows. No one knows. When will it be over? We don't
00:58know. What will happen? Will he come back? We don't know.
01:01Pivoting the conversation to Gervais' Netflix series Afterlife, which was recently renewed
01:05for a third season, Noah remarked how interesting it is for there to be so much heart within the
01:10comedian's work. Gervais then admitted that everything he's done work-wise has been about
01:14humanity. You know, The Office was about being 40 and are you doing the right thing? And Derek
01:18was about the end of your life and, you know, are you leaving the world in as good a state
01:23as you found it? With Afterlife, Gervais plays Tony, a man whose life is turned upside down
01:28after his wife dies, leaving him with videos advising him on matters such as basic hygiene
01:32and how to go on living without her. The comedian said that after the first season, he was surprised
01:37by the emotional connection people had with the show and Tony's journey. People would come
01:41up to me on the street and say, oh, I lost my brother three weeks ago or I lost my mom
01:47before I watched it and it really helped. Noah noted how the theme of grief in the series
01:51is actually timely to what we're all experiencing right now. For the first time in history, as
01:55you said, we're all experiencing a shared grief in a way that even world wars didn't create.
02:00Gervais agreed, adding that the pandemic has made everyone appreciate the little things in
02:04life and with the show, it touches on how those things can save you. To watch the full
