From Emily Blunt's much-discussed Schiaparelli gown to Lily Gladstone's Gucci and Joe Big Mountain collaboration, Jenna Lyons and HauteLeMode's Luke Meagher reveal their favorite Oscars red carpet looks with The Hollywood Reporter.
Transcript
00:00Hi, I'm Jenna Lyons, and I'm Luke Maher, and this is the Hollywood Reporter Red Carpet Roundup Oscar Edition.
00:10Let's get into it.
00:11Luke, I'd like to hear what you feel Oscar night means to fashion.
00:16That's a great question, Jenna. I genuinely think that the Oscars night is kind of a celebration of fashion,
00:22but in a way that's a little bit more elegant, it's a little bit more understated.
00:28I also think people fall in love with the star, and then they get to know a brand, and I loved seeing that.
00:33And I think it's great for people in America to see what's behind some of these designers,
00:36and seeing them develop a relationship with the star, it's exciting.
00:39And also seeing the brands jostle for power.
00:41As somebody that has dressed some very high-profile people, what goes into the process?
00:48I think what's interesting is we've seen a lot of these movies have multiple stars be nominated.
00:54So, for instance, if you take Barbie, you have Margot Robbie and America Ferrara,
00:58and you've seen them actually consider what the other one is wearing.
01:01So, last night, for the first time, we saw America in pink, where Margot's really been owning pink.
01:06America's been doing all black, for the most part, and now role reversal.
01:10Margot comes in in black, and I think, you know, you can tell Cara Walsh, who was the stylist,
01:14who is really thinking about how are you going to view those two people together.
01:18It's not just about the individual, it's about how are you talking about the movie in and of itself.
01:22I think that's fascinating.
01:24The Wicked press tour has begun.
01:27Cynthia in her green.
01:28We're on.
01:29Ariana in her pink.
01:30We're on.
01:31They've started, they've hit the ground running, so.
01:33We just have to have a moment for green.
01:35Cynthia Erivo.
01:37What a star.
01:39I'm obsessed with her, just on a personal level.
01:41I love her and adore her.
01:42And I think this dress was so spectacular, and showing off her incredible décolletage.
01:48And that, to me, is also, she kind of has her own sense of the way that she pulls things together.
01:52Where I think designers don't always want that, and she really goes for it.
01:55No.
01:56And I'm obsessed.
01:57I love it.
01:58I mean, I also just think using leather, and getting that dress to fit the way that it does,
02:02and in the color green, I thought was crazy.
02:05Because normally you would say maybe a black will sort of, you know.
02:09It's a risk.
02:10It's so hard to talk about Zendaya, because the girl's just perfect.
02:13I was going to say, I'm like, sometimes.
02:14It's sort of not.
02:15It's like, yeah, what did she do?
02:16Okay, it's great.
02:17Alright, uh-huh.
02:18No, it's true.
02:19I know.
02:20It's like not, the girl is, she's stunning.
02:21She's talented.
02:22She's beautiful.
02:23She knows what to wear.
02:24Like, what am I supposed to say?
02:25Oh, it's true.
02:26I like this dress a lot.
02:27I like the idea of the organza in pink.
02:29I thought it was that futuristic sort of Armani fabric.
02:34There's a lot of technicality that goes on.
02:37I don't know what to say.
02:38Every time she comes on, I'm like, mm-hmm, check.
02:40No, agree.
02:41Yeah.
02:42100%.
02:43Emma Stone.
02:44Emma Stone is like a good vantage point, because not only was it the fun element of the big peplum in that dress,
02:50and like I could talk about Nicolas Jaskier, sort of over probably the past two years, maybe a year and a half, getting that team at LV to really start to bring in his runway details, but making them a little bit more understandable to a mainstream audience.
03:08And on top of it, the dress malfunction, I think, only then further add.
03:13It was endearing.
03:14Yeah, I think it added a little bit, and we normally see all of these brands being these really poised and perfect, and everything is amazing, and it's like, I kind of love that element of, like, she was so enraptured by Ryan Gosling, which totally makes sense, that the dress rift.
03:27It's like, I think that that's great, and then they sewed it right back up by the time she was on for the next bar.
03:34Let's also discuss the Emily Blunt situation.
03:37It was a situation?
03:38I thought so, because the thing is, I love a little over the top, and I like that Schiaparelli dress in silhouette.
03:45I like the raised straps, I love the gold, I love the way it fit, but...
03:50So where's the rub?
03:51The underwear motif, I was not totally into.
03:57I think maybe, shocker for me, I thought maybe it was a little bit out of place, unfortunately.
04:03I don't know if the reference was specifically underwear.
04:06I think that it was a reference of an outline of a corset.
04:08Oftentimes corsets have the shape that comes down in the front, and they keep the panel really straight.
04:13So to me, it felt like it was referencing what might have been underneath the dress, which was a corset.
04:18That's fair, I 100% thought it was a pair of tighty-whities, which...
04:23That doesn't feel quite like a Schiaparelli reference.
04:26Listen, at this point, I think with Schiaparelli, anything is on the docket.
04:30Okay, fine.
04:31Greta Lee has not made a mistake, the girl is crushing it every single time.
04:36Every look, spot on.
04:38I've been a fan of hers every show.
04:41I love Lupita, Can Do No Wrong, Armani Prevay.
04:44It does remind me of the Prada dress she wore years ago to the Oscars, which I'm okay with.
04:49I love.
04:50No, I'm obsessed.
04:51I love that.
04:52I'm obsessed with her.
04:53She can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned.
04:55I also just loved the dress on her.
04:57It's beautiful.
04:58I think it's gorgeous.
04:59I even just love the way that Armani Prevay understood to just put those little feathers on the hip,
05:03and the way that they sort of curve down to accentuate rather than just being a band around,
05:09which some people sometimes do.
05:11And feathers are hot.
05:12Yes.
05:13She gets it.
05:14She gets it always.
05:15I always think her jewelry and makeup is always on point.
05:18Anya Taylor-Joy.
05:19Yes.
05:20Anya Taylor-Joy's dress, Dior.
05:21So ironically, one of my first things I ever bought when I went to Europe was a calendar for
05:27Sundiore, and that dress, the original dress, was in my calendar.
05:30So when she walked out in, I knew immediately what it was.
05:33It was just a much slimmer version of what the original dress was.
05:36It was stunning.
05:37Lily Gladstone.
05:38I love Lily.
05:39I also really appreciate that she's been carefully curating all of her jewelry to be from indigenous
05:45people.
05:46Yes.
05:47I'm totally down.
05:48I thought that was a really nice dresser, and she always looks quite beautiful.
05:51No, it's true.
05:52And I also love the fact that this is probably a revolutionary moment in terms of red carpet dressing,
05:57and a big luxury brand like Gucci and Sabado de Sarno saying, you know what?
06:01We're going to collaborate with an artist that's sort of outside of our world.
06:07I also loved Sondra Huller's dress.
06:09I thought it was so stunning, and the way it framed her face, and was unique.
06:14And I absolutely loved it.
06:16I think Scatharelli is crushing.
06:18Very excited.
06:19My favorite person, Coleman Domingo.
06:22Oh, of course.
06:23I mean, that goes without saying.
06:25I am obsessed.
06:26I've never been so immediately in love with someone as I have been with him.
06:29And I loved seeing that.
06:30And I think it's great for people in America to see what's behind some of these designers,
06:34and seeing them develop a relationship with a star.
06:36It's exciting.
06:37And we have to have a moment for Ryan Gosling singing.
06:40Getting the entire room up on their feet.
06:42I've never seen so many smiles on an Oscar.
06:45No, it's true.
06:46It's true.
06:47It was fun.
06:48It was exciting.
06:49It was different.
06:50It was a nice way of getting that unbuttoned element to the Oscars, which I think people
06:54then want to watch a little bit more.
06:56It doesn't feel like just an industry thing.
06:58It feels like we're all being let in, which is cool.
07:00Yeah.
07:01I didn't want to turn it off.
07:02I have to say, this was a very fun first time for me, and I look forward to our next
07:05time.
07:06And thanks, everyone, for tuning in to our Hollywood Reporter Oscar Red Carpet recap.
