00:00The
00:14When I thought this happened, it was the day before Christmas Eve
00:22That day
00:24I was sick
00:26I had like a cold, so I didn't go to work
00:37A pretty close neighbor, Jerry, came to the door, hollering, Helen
00:46Helen, come quick
00:51And he said, Mary Lou and Dorothy both are missing
00:59So, my son
01:05I might have walked over there with you
01:10I had a jolla
01:15A little smile
01:17I didn't hear not once
01:21Pete out of nothing
01:25We just found them upstairs
01:29It was a shock
01:31They were blood
01:35From the living room
01:37All the way to the basement door
01:41When my son got to the basement
01:47He hurt me
01:49Mom
01:50Don't come
01:51Don't come
01:53No
01:54Come
02:23It was the 23rd of December 1997
02:35I was the 23rd of December 1997 I worked as a detective in homicide special assignment section
02:57you know you never know what you're in for when you get to work so
03:05you hope it's slow because it's Christmas time I was looking forward to
03:10spending Christmas with my family no ton of food visiting opening presents and
03:15things of that nature but the call came in and we're dispatched out to Elm Street
03:28Elm Street was a neighborhood that stood out by itself like its own little
03:33peninsula it wasn't a lot of crime or any action as I got out the vehicle you can
03:42see a guy standing in the front of the house he had a hook on one arm and that
03:49was just really odd to see someone with a hook on their arm he said his name was
03:55Jerry Drury wanting us to you know go in the house he was very very frantic
04:04as I walk in the house you can smell the blood blood a Christmas tree those two things don't go together at all
04:28there were footprints leading down to the basement just like what am I going to see when I get down there
04:48there
04:50you
04:51you
04:55you
04:57you
04:59you
05:01you
05:05you
05:07you
05:09in the basement there was a pile of clothes
05:22but it really wasn't an ordinary pile of clothes there was something wrong
05:32as i pulled back the clothes
05:34there's a body
05:37all you're seeing was the plastic bag over their head with the duct tape around their neck
05:44there was so much blood you couldn't see a face
05:48i mean i've not seen anything like that since i've been at homicide
05:57on the left side of the basement there was another body
06:01and in the same manner with a bag over the head
06:05duct tape around the bag
06:09when i went down and saw the second body
06:13there was a tube sticking out of the bag
06:16they were elderly ladies i had elderly parents and i just couldn't imagine having to come home to something that gruesome
06:27it was just really really horrific
06:35i was working for the detroit police department in the homicide section
06:47when i arrived we found out that jerry's wife mary lou was 57 years old and his mother-in-law dorothy gilbert was 74 years old on oxygen and more or less disabled
07:04when you first enter a house the evidence starts writing the picture for you
07:17in this case there was blood and drag marks
07:20it looked as if there may have been a fight or a struggle
07:25so it is my belief that they were alive when they were taken to the basement
07:38i would say that whoever done this
07:42prayed on them
07:45the murder itself was brutal
07:48and they left a trail behind them which means that we weren't looking at a professional criminal
07:55what really actually stood out is that there were like claw marks on the desk
08:07i remember it like yesterday
08:09that was strange because jerry he had a hook on his arm
08:14and the fact that instead of completing a search for his wife
08:19he went and got someone to go into the basement of the house
08:23so maybe he was involved in it himself
08:38i was 20 years old in 1997
08:40i lived on elm street since i was five years old
08:45and we knew everybody like even if we didn't know your name we knew your face
08:52when i see my mom my heart it was in my stomach
08:57my mom said they killed mary lou and dorothy
09:00and she was hysterical she was bawling and crying
09:05and jerry's in the back of a cop car
09:07and i'm just i'm just as shocked as everybody else
09:12i moved into the neighborhood and i was like five
09:16even as a kid
09:18he came across as cold
09:20like he didn't really look at me
09:22it was like he gave me an eeriness about him
09:26but it could be because he just didn't speak
09:29jerry stayed in that cop car for a long time
09:34and i don't know like what was going on
09:37i don't know i think we all like everybody was actually scared
09:48jerry he said he had left about 9 30 in the morning
09:51he had a plumbing job that he went to
09:54and that he arrived back at the house
09:56approximately around 12 30
09:58and then he saw the blood trails
10:01we asked mr jerry what may possibly may have been missing
10:08and during the search of the house
10:12mr jerry discovered
10:14there was a bloody jerry box that was empty
10:18four hundred dollars in cash was missing
10:22and credit cards were missing from the jerry home
10:26the checkbook was missing
10:29and they nickel-plated 38 revolver
10:36that had been taken out of the house
10:40so based on the evidence that we saw
10:44we knew it was a robbery
10:46and then we found out that jerry had a business partner
10:50and it turned out that he was working
10:53so we were able to eliminate him as the suspect
10:58when the murders happened
11:02none of us slept in our house that day
11:04my mom my dad me my uncle none of us
11:06i was actually scared
11:09for the first time
11:11after it happened
11:15i was scared
11:17because of the severity of the crime
11:28the bags over the head
11:30with the duct tape
11:32it's a horrible death when you're gasping for air
11:35and you can't get it
11:36it made me feel like
11:38i gotta get this case closed
11:40i gotta find out who did this
11:42and get them off the street before they do it again
11:45i knew that i was the camera out there
11:51it was christmas time
12:02and we had a double homicide
12:06items missing
12:08weapons missing
12:10and a perpetrator that was out there
12:12that was armed and dangerous
12:13the crime itself was horrific
12:16the victim was mary lou dreary
12:19and jorda gilbert
12:20what i saw in that house
12:24was like a nightmare
12:25i can't forget this case
12:28elm street
12:30it was not a crime written area
12:33so everyone was scared
12:35everybody was talking about it
12:38and we really did not think
12:41it was somebody from our neighborhood
12:42everybody was coming up with
12:45somebody tried to rob them
12:46but how could this happen with
12:49the neighbors right like that
12:50the houses were very close
12:52it was the eeriness in the air
12:56it was just a shot
13:02i didn't want to believe
13:09that mary lou would
13:13it kind of shook me to the core like
13:24it was
13:25it was one of the most heinous things that i've ever
13:29like this was elm street
13:31you didn't litter
13:35you didn't bust the glass like you did on the other blocks
13:39like all the kids played together
13:41it was just it was nice
13:42and i just could not believe
13:46that this happened to them
13:49like oh my god
13:52i love mary lou just as well as my mom
14:02she never corrected you
14:07she kind of let you learn your own way
14:09she was super nice to me
14:13and her mother
14:15dorothy was more nice than mary lou
14:17they were like family
14:20back then in detroit
14:24murders didn't get put on the news
14:26and we got news crews out there
14:30we got channel 407
14:31everybody out here now
14:33two elderly women
14:34have been found murdered
14:35in their detroit home
14:37police are still searching for any witnesses
14:38residents are on edge
14:40after a brutal attack
14:41the day before christmas
14:42on elm street
14:43at the time i was working as the crime reporter
14:48for the detroit free press
14:49i get a call from my editor
14:51we got a breaking story
14:52we got a double murder
14:53you got to go out
14:54the story was cold
14:57so i bundled up
15:00and waddled my way out to the scene
15:02at that time
15:05there had been a rash of home invasions
15:08and murders in the surrounding neighborhood
15:10just a few weeks before
15:15there had been a triple murder
15:17just a few blocks away
15:19two elderly sisters
15:35and a husband
15:37who was in his 80s
15:38had been stabbed to death
15:4012 days later
15:46before the elm street case
15:48about four miles away
15:50from elm street
15:51a mother
15:53a daughter
15:54and a grandson
15:55was actually
15:56shot to death
15:58in this case
16:01the home was also ransacked
16:03in all three cases
16:06there was no forced entry
16:07so based on the similarities
16:10the general public would say
16:13oh my god
16:14is there a murder spree going on
16:16in the city of detroit
16:17the first thought that you have
16:20is
16:20could i be in danger
16:21like you've seen
16:24people get jagged
16:25people get robbed
16:26but this was like
16:28different
16:29different
16:29this was like
16:31movie
16:32stuff
16:32we never locked our door
16:35on elm street
16:35and we was in the middle
16:37of detroit
16:38that's how safe
16:40we thought we were
16:40it was a different feeling
16:43with mary lull and dorothy
16:44calling
16:44like it wasn't the same
16:46they was our neighbors
16:48and
16:48it was family
16:50i was on day shift
16:54when we got a call
16:57from the medical examiner
16:58with autopsy reports
17:01based on mary lull's injuries
17:04she was still alive
17:05during the time
17:06that they were putting
17:07the plastic bag
17:09around her neck
17:10and
17:13the killer
17:14or killers
17:15decided to do
17:16the same thing
17:17to dorothy
17:18dorothy had emphysema
17:22and it was just
17:23really horrific
17:24that
17:24you know
17:25that you would just
17:26stick a rag in her mouth
17:28duct tape
17:30knowing that
17:32it had an oxygen tank
17:34the brutality
17:36of the killings
17:37and
17:39also
17:39the fact that
17:40the body was partially
17:42covered
17:42was just a true
17:44indicator that
17:45maybe it was somebody
17:46that knew them
17:47prior to the death
17:48when somebody
17:51covers the body
17:52it's not to hide
17:53the body
17:54it's to remove them
17:56from their vision
17:57so at that time
18:02we went back
18:03to the vicinity
18:03of the other murders
18:05to see
18:06are they connected
18:07we had to see
18:09if there's
18:10any similarities
18:10with the
18:11elm street case
18:12where we could say
18:15okay
18:16this perpetrator
18:17was over here
18:18as well
18:18well
18:20what you do
18:21a lot of times
18:22is you have to
18:23look for what we call
18:24a modus operandi
18:25we look for things
18:29that are similar
18:29to other crimes
18:31that have already
18:32occurred
18:32none of that
18:34was present
18:34at the time
18:35of our investigation
18:36one house
18:38the person
18:39was stabbed
18:40the other person
18:41was shot
18:42we discovered
18:44the only thing
18:45that actually
18:45connected them
18:46was that
18:47there was
18:48no forced entry
18:49there was never
18:53a correlation
18:54between them
18:55based on
18:58Dorothy's
18:58and Mary Lou's
18:59injuries
19:00the perpetrator
19:01just really had
19:02a vengeance
19:03against them
19:03it was a well-knit
19:08close community
19:09and the more
19:11that we looked
19:12and the more
19:13that we investigated
19:14it definitely felt
19:15as if they knew
19:16their assailants
19:18the evidence
19:20led us directly
19:21to Elm Street
19:22and that's where
19:24we started
19:24concentrating
19:25our energies
19:26the day after
19:36Mary Lou and Dorothy
19:37was killed
19:38it was Christmas Eve
19:40I don't even
19:42remember Christmas
19:44in 1997
19:45like we would
19:47rather not have
19:47Christmas that year
19:48you can't celebrate
19:51during that
19:51like nothing
19:53this brutal
19:54has ever happened
19:55but we went
20:02to the house
20:02I was with my mom
20:04it was horrible
20:05like because
20:06we was helping
20:07clean up
20:08and stuff like that
20:09mind you
20:13I'm 20
20:13and I'm just
20:14I honestly
20:16I was scared
20:18the lights
20:20presents
20:21everything like that
20:22was still dead
20:22there was like
20:26splats of blood
20:27in places
20:28that they didn't
20:28clean up off the floor
20:29like the walls
20:30you could see
20:33where the trail
20:34of blood has been
20:35and like Jerry
20:37he cried a lot
20:38I can't forget
20:42like I have a picture
20:43in my head
20:44and why
20:46did this happen
20:48that was one thing
20:50I've never understood
20:51we had to find out
21:05who had a motive
21:06to actually commit
21:07the crime
21:08so we went
21:10and did a survey
21:11of the neighborhood
21:12during the canvas
21:14we discovered
21:15that the Drury family
21:16pretty much
21:17owned the block
21:18Mary Lou
21:20was in the business
21:21of renting
21:22the homes out
21:23she pretty much
21:25picked her own
21:25neighbors
21:26in this instance
21:29here
21:29Mary Lou
21:30knew everybody
21:31Mary Lou
21:34was the landlady
21:36and like
21:36she gave me
21:37big boss energy
21:38without
21:39flamboyance
21:40like she didn't
21:41have furs
21:42and she could have
21:43she wasn't flashy
21:44she was about
21:46her business
21:47you knew not
21:48to play with her
21:49like you knew
21:50to respect her
21:51that's the energy
21:52she gave me
21:53she had
21:57the office
21:57in the front
21:58that she would
22:00conduct her business
22:01people would come in
22:03and out
22:03to drop their rent off
22:04they really didn't
22:09lock the door
22:09so anyone
22:10in that neighborhood
22:12had an opportunity
22:13to be able
22:14to enter
22:14the dreary home
22:15the family
22:17they were pretty much
22:19vulnerable
22:19she was fair
22:21she rented
22:23with people
22:23who are on welfare
22:24if you didn't have
22:25your rent money
22:26she wasn't the type
22:26to be like
22:27you got 30 days
22:28and you're out of here
22:28I think Mary Lou
22:30was perhaps
22:31too trusting
22:31we all know
22:33what it's like
22:33to have a landlord
22:34it's not usually
22:35a loving and friendly
22:36relationship
22:37December 23rd
22:39was the day
22:40the homicides
22:41took place
22:42that was close
22:43to the time
22:44the people
22:44would come in
22:45and pay rent
22:46to the dreary family
22:47during the search
22:53of the house
22:54I discovered
22:56that there was
22:56some weapons
22:57missing
22:57Mary Lou
23:03kept the gun
23:04at her desk
23:05you know
23:07a fight
23:08could escalate
23:09at any moment
23:10where we started
23:15asking people
23:16whether or not
23:17they seen anything
23:18remarkable
23:19at the time
23:20Jerry was at work
23:22from 9.30 a.m.
23:24up until 12.45 p.m.
23:26and that's when
23:30we discovered
23:31that
23:32one of the neighbors
23:33heard something
23:34Hazel Johnson
23:37was sort of
23:38the next door neighbor
23:39maybe a little bit
23:40of a nosy body
23:41she was good friends
23:43with Mary Lou
23:43and it was Christmas time
23:45and so
23:47Hazel has some
23:47holiday cards
23:48that she wants
23:48to drop off
23:49to her friend
23:50the family
23:52they have five chihuahuas
23:53the dogs knew
23:55the neighbor Hazel
23:56very well
23:57Hazel was the cat lady
24:00on the street
24:00she saved all
24:01the cats
24:02if you walk
24:04past Hazel's house
24:05you might see her
24:05walking around
24:06with a mama
24:07you know what I'm saying
24:07cats everywhere
24:09normally
24:10the dogs
24:11would stop barking
24:12when they smelled her
24:13Hazel said
24:16that when she
24:16knocked on the door
24:17and she could hear
24:18the dogs barking
24:19frantically
24:19the door
24:26was locked
24:27which was
24:28very unusual
24:29she's thinking
24:31that something's
24:32off
24:32but
24:33she wasn't sure
24:34if Hazel
24:36would have got
24:37inside that house
24:38that day
24:38she would have
24:39definitely
24:39came to the same
24:41fate as Mary Lou
24:42and Dorothy
24:42like
24:44if you walk
24:45past the house
24:46that's all you
24:46would hear
24:46is them dogs
24:47that's why
24:48everybody didn't
24:49understand how
24:50this happened
24:51is because all
24:51these dogs
24:52would have been
24:52barking and
24:53nobody heard
24:55nothing
24:56when I talked
24:56to the police
24:57I said
24:57I didn't hear
24:58the dogs barking
24:59what Pamela
25:01was the tenant
25:03that lived above
25:04Mary Lou and
25:05Dorothy
25:06maybe she had
25:07heard something
25:08my mom
25:11would take care
25:12of Dorothy
25:13all during the day
25:14and Pam
25:16moved in
25:17upstairs
25:17so she could be
25:18available at night
25:19she was
25:21she was super
25:22nice to me
25:23like
25:23she never
25:24yelled at me
25:25she never
25:25did nothing
25:26like that
25:27she was there
25:29to take care
25:29of Dorothy
25:30caregivers
25:31have a way
25:32of becoming
25:33endeared to
25:34the person
25:34they're giving
25:35care to
25:35I would imagine
25:37that having
25:37a trusted person
25:39in their midst
25:39to take care
25:41of their
25:42ailing mother
25:42and treat her
25:44as a grandmother
25:45must have felt
25:46like a blessing
25:47and based
25:50on the
25:51information
25:52that we received
25:53Mary Lou
25:55and Dorothy
25:55got along
25:56great with
25:56Pamela
25:57she even
25:59called
26:00Dorothy
26:00grandma
26:01the main
26:04problem
26:05was that
26:05Pamela
26:06Vannoy
26:07was nowhere
26:08to be found
26:08the door
26:10was locked
26:11her vehicle
26:12was left
26:12outside
26:13the question
26:14was where
26:15was Pamela
26:16where is the
26:17caregiver
26:17what time
26:19did she leave
26:19and where
26:20did she go
26:21and why
26:22hadn't she
26:22returned
26:23we ended up
26:27getting a search
26:28for her
26:29apartment
26:29and looking
26:32at her
26:33apartment
26:33it seemed
26:34like she
26:34just disappeared
26:35if someone
26:36was going
26:37out of town
26:37certain things
26:38that would
26:38have been
26:38missing
26:39and those
26:39things were
26:40not missing
26:40at that time
26:41we were
26:42thinking that
26:43Pamela
26:43could be
26:43the third
26:44victim
26:45Pamela
26:46Vannoy
26:46could have
26:47walked in
26:47on the
26:47murderers
26:48in the
26:48act
26:49and they
26:49could have
26:49killed her
26:50too
26:50so there
26:51could have
26:51been
26:52three
26:52victims
26:53that day
26:53instead of
26:54two
26:54the day
27:06after the
27:07murders
27:07of
27:08Mary Lou
27:08Drury
27:09who was
27:10Jerry's wife
27:11and Dorothy
27:12Gilbert
27:12who was
27:13Mary Lou's
27:13mother
27:14everyone's
27:15talking
27:16everybody's
27:16there
27:17trying to
27:17figure out
27:18who could
27:18it be
27:19but then
27:20the
27:21investigators
27:21started
27:22looking around
27:23and asking
27:24who's
27:24supposed to
27:25be here
27:25and isn't
27:26here
27:26guess who
27:27it was
27:28Pamela
27:29Vannoy
27:29Pamela
27:30Vannoy
27:30was a
27:31caretaker
27:31and was
27:32really close
27:33to the
27:33family
27:33she lived
27:35right upstairs
27:36but at this
27:38point she was
27:39nowhere to be
27:40found
27:40this gave us
27:43even a higher
27:44intensity
27:45on the search
27:45for her
27:46she too
27:47could have
27:47been a
27:48victim
27:48so we
27:50called in
27:50the first
27:51person that
27:51we talked
27:51to
27:52the home
27:53owner
27:53Jerry
27:53he was
27:55thinking
27:56on what
27:56else he
27:57may have
27:57missed
27:58and he
28:01actually
28:01gave us
28:01information
28:02that on
28:03the day
28:03of the
28:04murders
28:04he saw
28:06Pamela
28:06and
28:07Mary Lou
28:08talking
28:09for a
28:09long time
28:10he said
28:12she had
28:13a boyfriend
28:13who was
28:14living with
28:15her
28:15on and
28:16off
28:16Pamela
28:17and Charles
28:18their
28:18relationship
28:19sort of
28:20volatile
28:21Charles
28:23was around
28:24did odd
28:25jobs
28:25early on
28:27the Drury
28:28family
28:28felt like
28:29he could
28:29help with
28:30the house
28:30and the
28:31maintenance
28:31Charles
28:33was a
28:33handyman
28:34but
28:36he had
28:36a violent
28:37past
28:37so
28:40Jerry
28:40thinks
28:40maybe
28:41something's
28:42off
28:42from day
28:43one
28:44it was
28:45always a
28:46feeling
28:46about
28:46Charles
28:47it
28:49looked
28:49pretty
28:49bad
28:50he
28:51never
28:51spoke
28:51to us
28:52much
28:52I was
28:54actually
28:54scared
28:55for
28:55Pam
28:56later
29:04later that
29:04day
29:04we found
29:06a witness
29:06that
29:07Pamela
29:07came to
29:08her
29:08to use
29:09her
29:10telephone
29:10she said
29:14the morning
29:14of the
29:15murders
29:15on
29:16December
29:1623rd
29:17that
29:18Pamela
29:18Vannoy
29:19and Charles
29:20Vaughn
29:20showed up
29:21at her
29:21house
29:21and she
29:23was carrying
29:23plastic bags
29:24Pam had
29:26a lot of
29:26her personal
29:27belongings
29:28and she
29:29wanted to
29:29leave them
29:29at her
29:30house
29:30and Charles
29:32went straight
29:32to the bathroom
29:33she didn't
29:34think anything
29:35of it
29:35until when
29:39Charles came
29:39back
29:40he pulled
29:40a gun
29:41and said
29:41look
29:42you didn't
29:42see us
29:42and then
29:43they disappeared
29:44it was
29:47a nickel
29:47plated
29:48.38
29:48revolver
29:49it looked
29:50like the
29:51one
29:51that was
29:51missing
29:52at that
29:53moment
29:54we suspected

29:56killed
29:56Mary Lou
29:57and Dorothy
29:59he was
30:01armed
30:01and dangerous
30:02he actually
30:03threatened
30:03a witness
30:04so there
30:05was no
30:05telling
30:06if he
30:06would
30:06use
30:07that
30:07weapon
30:07for

30:10I
30:18continued

36:01he had
36:01no idea
36:02what pamela
36:02had planned
36:03when he
36:04went upstairs
36:05to her
36:06apartment
36:06and left
36:07her downstairs
36:08with mary lou
36:09and dorothy
36:10he said
36:14a fight
36:15ensued
36:16downstairs
36:16and then
36:20everything
36:20just went
36:21quiet
36:21after 20
36:24minutes
36:25of not
36:26hearing
36:26anything
36:26he went
36:27downstairs
36:28he saw
36:30pamela
36:31standing
36:31over the
36:32bodies
36:32charles
36:35said that
36:35he helped
36:36her move
36:36dorothy's
36:37body
36:37because he
36:38was afraid
36:39of what
36:39she was
36:40capable
36:40of doing
36:41pamela
36:43has a
36:44different
36:44version
36:44of this
36:44story
36:45according
36:46to pamela
36:47charles
36:47wanted to
36:48do a
36:48robbery
36:48he said
36:50they've
36:51used us
36:51long
36:52enough
36:52somehow
36:55this
36:57wonderful
36:57family
36:57who took
36:58them in
36:59gave them
37:00room and
37:00board
37:01and pocket
37:02money
37:02and paid
37:02them for
37:03an honest
37:03day's
37:03work
37:04that
37:04somehow
37:05he was
37:06owed
37:06more
37:07they
37:10were
37:10going
37:10to
37:11wait
37:11until
37:12jerald
37:12went
37:13to
37:13work
37:13went
37:14to
37:14go
37:14downstairs
37:14coast
37:17is
37:17clear
37:18the plan
37:19was simple
37:19tie him up
37:20and rob
37:21him no harm
37:21no foul
37:22little bit
37:22of harm
37:23little bit
37:23of foul
37:23but certainly
37:24no bloodshed
37:25and murder
37:25but pamela
37:29says
37:29once they
37:30go back
37:30inside
37:31some
37:32kind of
37:33switch
37:33went off
37:35and charles
37:36became
37:37violently
37:37angry
37:38she said
37:39that
37:40marylou
37:41was begging
37:41and pleading
37:42before charles
37:43did anything
37:44to her
37:44mother
37:45dorothy
37:45but he
37:46didn't care
37:47pamela
37:48said she
37:48tried to
37:49intervene
37:49and stop
37:51him from
37:52what would
37:52become a
37:52murderous
37:53frenzy
37:53he turns
37:55the gun
37:56on his
37:57girlfriend
37:57and says
37:59this
37:59deserves it
38:00it wasn't
38:03a matter
38:04of who
38:04did it
38:04both of
38:05them were
38:05there at
38:06the time
38:06both of
38:07them became
38:08enraged
38:08because they
38:09had nowhere
38:10to go
38:10they had
38:11no money
38:11they had
38:13no family
38:13and friends
38:14that would
38:14take them
38:15in
38:15at that
38:16particular
38:16time
38:17truthfully
38:19i don't
38:19believe it
38:20i don't
38:20believe that
38:21one person
38:21did all
38:22of that
38:22it was a
38:24two-person
38:25job
38:25it's my
38:33belief that
38:34dorothy
38:35heard the
38:35fight
38:36heard the
38:37struggle
38:37heard the
38:38yelling
38:38and came
38:39to the
38:40assistance
38:40of her
38:41daughter
38:41who was
38:42fighting
38:43for her
38:43life
38:44and she
38:47too got
38:47caught up
38:48in the
38:48web
38:49of the
38:51killing
38:51they were
38:54alive
38:55when they
38:55were taken
38:56to the
38:56basement
38:56and they
38:58died a
38:59horrible
38:59death
38:59they were
39:03both sentenced
39:04to life
39:04in prison
39:05which i
39:06think
39:06was well
39:07deserved
39:08it's a
39:11sense of
39:12satisfaction
39:13that you
39:15were able
39:15to close
39:15the case
39:16but the
39:18whole block
39:19was devastated
39:20by homicide
39:21whatever
39:24sense of
39:25safety
39:25that this
39:26tight-knit
39:26elm street
39:27community
39:27had felt
39:28that was
39:29over forever
39:30our life
39:33pivoted
39:34at that
39:34point
39:35it didn't
39:36like that
39:37was a
39:38pivot point
39:38of all
39:39of our
39:39lives
39:40my mom
39:43didn't
39:44celebrate
39:44another
39:44Christmas
39:45until my
39:45son came
39:46mary
39:49lue
39:50was
39:50like
39:53a
39:53sister
39:53to me
39:56a world
39:57that never
39:58changed
39:59i just
40:03can't
40:05understand
40:06why
40:08why
40:12somebody
40:13would
40:13just
40:14just
40:15you
