Sometimes when Satish Kumar Subramanian is tending to his flock of goats he
00:05
still can't believe it until a few years ago he had his boyhood dream job as a
00:10
police officer but something was missing and he decided to go self-employed and
00:15
start up his own farm. After gaining some knowledge about farming I told myself
00:22
let's quit this and start our own business so I resigned from my job while
00:29
thinking about what to do next I wanted to do something in my own village and I
00:34
decided to start goat farming. And specifically integrated goat farming the
00:41
eco-friendly system involves growing his own animal feed as opposed to having it
00:46
brought in from far away. The jinjava or marble grass he grows is rich in
00:51
nutrients and at the same time a low maintenance crop that can be harvested
00:55
several times a year. His parents do what they can to support him.
01:00
People usually ask whether an integrated farm can be profitable the answer to that
01:06
lies in how our life grows along with it. Starting out wasn't easy and with the
01:13
farm not generating enough money he set up a gym in his village but he did soon
01:19
realize how male goats were particularly profitable with no shortage of breeders
01:24
eager to buy his stock. In addition to goats he now also breeds cattle, chickens and
01:31
even dogs. Beginners usually expect immediate profits but that's where they go
01:40
wrong. You can't expect instant earnings. Any business takes at least three years of
01:47
learning and experience before it can pay off. And the former policeman has
01:55
certainly succeeded in the world of social media where he has some hundred and
01:59
forty thousand followers. They are treated to insights into integrated farming
02:03
practices and updates on the workshops he runs like this recent seminar on
02:08
chicken farming. His new calling is a source of pride for his parents.
02:15
When Satish decided to quit and said he was taking up farming we were shocked.
02:27
Quitting a secure government job didn't go down well in the family but now seeing his
02:33
hard work and the results we are feeling happy for him.
02:37
Satish Kumar Subramanian has found a new livelihood through integrated farming, a
02:45
sustainable concept with animals and the crops for their feed both farmed right
02:49
next to each other. The policeman turned farmer has no second thoughts about his
02:53
career change and would like to make the same choice again without hesitation.
02:59
The second thought is the worst defensive Simon and Filsian cat.
