00:00For me and for millions of others, the story of Peter
00:30is one of the most moving in the Gospels, because Peter was rash, and he's sometimes very
00:35slow to understand, fearful, imperfect, in other words, a human being, just like the
00:42rest of us.
00:44And Jesus chose him to carry on his ministry, not in spite of, but because of his humanity.
00:54We've done our best to tell the story of this man who was a fisherman, a humble fisherman,
00:58who was given the keys of the kingdom of heaven, St. Peter.
01:03His name was Simon, or Shimon, which means he who heard the word of God.
01:28His brother's name was Andrew.
01:33He was a simple fisherman, a working man.
01:37The work was hard, and the times were harder.
01:41But there was one voice that stood out.
01:50Galileans, people of Galilee, listen to me.
01:55We are all so quick to see the fault in others.
02:02We open our eyes.
02:04We see.
02:05We understand quickly.
02:08Because we are looking from afar.
02:11Not within.
02:13That is never comfortable.
02:22But listen.
02:24The next time you find fault with your wife, or your brother,
02:30or your neighbor, or even your enemy,
02:35look within, look within, before you speak.
02:41Look within.
02:43And you will find the purest expression
02:47of the fault you see in the other.
02:52Yes.
02:54Yes, you will.
02:58This is true.
02:59Will you get out of our boat now?
03:29Put down into the deep water
03:36and lower your nets
03:37off the right side of the boat.
03:41Just get out of our boat.
03:43We've been out all night and caught nothing.
03:45It's too late now.
03:46Lower your nets
03:47from the right side of the boat.
03:49I tell you,
03:51there are fish there.
03:59Okay.
03:59Go ahead.
04:08Go ahead.
04:14Go ahead.
04:15Go ahead.
04:21Come, why?
04:21It's not possible.
04:42Follow me, and I'll make you fishers of men.
04:51Follow me, God.
05:51Sister, how can I help you?
06:15Yes, that's the way.
06:19That's the way.
06:21What is this life we're leading now?
06:47I don't know.
06:52I don't understand half the things he says.
06:57Neither do I.
06:59How can anyone forgive the whole world?
07:03How can anyone forgive someone who's wronged you?
07:06I don't know, but he can.
07:16That woman who sped on him, the woman who sped on me, he forgave her over and over.
07:23But that's him.
07:25He's not like other men.
07:30Do you think he comes from God?
07:36What do you think?
07:40Do you think he's the Messiah?
07:41I think I was compelled to follow him.
07:53It changed my life to follow him.
07:55So did I.
08:00When someone is hungry, he feeds them.
08:08When someone is alone, he comforts them.
08:14And when someone is sick, he heals them.
08:17But when I speak to him, he answers.
08:28Yes.
08:32That's something new in this life.
08:36Yes.
08:38It is.
08:39You were taught well by your father.
08:55My father never leaves me.
08:58I knew your father.
08:59May he rest in peace.
09:01My father is in all things and all people.
09:04He is eternal.
09:05Be very, very careful what you say, Nazarene.
09:13They honor me with their mouths.
09:16But their hearts are worlds away.
09:20And they worship me in vain by teaching their own human inventions as my doctrines.
09:27Isaiah.
09:27Yes.
09:28And his prophecy has come to pass with your generation of hypocrites.
09:35You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces.
09:40The very people who are trying to enter.
09:43You trudge to the back of Beyond looking for a single man to convert.
09:47And the moment you succeed,
09:49you start making him twice as much a child of hell as you are.
09:54It's not wise to keep company of this man.
10:01He is not your messiah.
10:10Master, you think that this was wise?
10:14They took offense at your words.
10:15And well, they should.
10:17They are blind.
10:18If the blind lead the blind, they all fall into a pit.
10:24But what does that mean?
10:26What does all of it mean, Master?
10:28We don't understand.
10:29I think you do understand, but you deny that you do.
10:32Because you are afraid.
10:33There was Andrew.
10:44Thomas.
10:48Bartholomew.
10:52Mary of Magdala.
10:56And Mary, the mother of Jesus.
11:00Judas Iscariot.
11:02And Simon Peter.
11:04They, along with the others,
11:06were the ones who remained.
11:08The disciples who became the apostles.
11:13The ones who would spread the word
11:15as far and as wide as they could.
11:18The disciples.
11:33Master, what do we do now?
11:36Because now the Pharisees will suspect us and watch us.
11:42They'll watch everything we do.
11:44Won't that harm our mission?
11:47Your mission?
11:48Is it our mission?
11:49I don't know.
11:50My dear one, I chose you.
11:55All of you.
11:58Each and every one of you.
12:00And that includes the one who will betray me and the one who will deny me near the hour
12:07of my death.
12:08Your death?
12:15Yes.
12:17My death.
12:18But after three days, I will rise again.
12:27How can you say these things?
12:29How do you even dare to speak of your own death?
12:35Betray you?
12:38Deny you?
12:39Out of my sight, Satan!
12:40You're speaking in the tongues of men!
12:43I'm speaking the words of God.
12:48This is too much.
12:51I've had enough.
12:54I've had enough!
13:10Simon, there are things that you will only understand after I've risen from the dead.
13:27Master, I was born a fisherman.
13:34It's hard work, but it's a decent living.
13:40I could go back to that life.
13:44But you've revealed so much to me.
13:47Some of it I've understood.
13:51A lot of it I...
13:52I...
13:53I know no scripture.
13:57I work with my hands.
14:00I'm a much simpler man than you think I am.
14:02Simon.
14:05I'm giving you a new name.
14:08Peter.
14:10Why?
14:13What for?
14:14Because you will be my rock.
14:17The rock on which the church will be built.
14:23The faith.
14:28I'll give you the keys to heaven's kingdom.
14:34Me?
14:34Me?
14:34Me?
14:40Why me?
14:46I don't understand.
14:50I...
14:51I don't understand.
14:53My death.
14:54No.
15:07I wish.
15:07To sleep.
15:08Yeah.
15:09I don't know.
15:10I don't know.
15:11I don't know.
15:12I don't know.
15:12I don't know.
15:13I don't know.
15:14I just think that's kind of a thing.
15:16Let's pray.
15:16I don't know.
15:16I don't know.
15:17Good이지.
15:18Good night.
15:19I don't know.
15:20This imp Blaze came.
15:21Good day.
15:21I don't see.
15:22Good day.
15:23Master, what are you doing?
15:51I'm going to wash your feet.
15:53No, you will never wash my feet.
15:56I told you.
15:57There are things you can't understand now, but you will understand them later.
16:14You call me Master, don't you?
16:17Yes.
16:19So the Master is washing the pupils' feet.
16:23This is what we will do for each other.
16:28As I am doing for you, you will do for one another.
16:33For all others.
16:37If you understand this now, any of you, then you are blessed.
16:42But I don't expect that you will.
16:53Tonight, one of you will betray me.
16:56And after they've taken me, one of you will deny me.
17:05Me?
17:06No.
17:07Never.
17:08Three times before the cock crows.
17:13This is the way of man, my beloved Peter.
17:26not a child.

19:46I don't know.
19:52Aren't you a follower of Jesus to Galilean?
19:57I don't know what you're talking about.
20:05Wasn't that man with Jesus of Nazareth?
20:07That's what I thought.
20:08I never met the man.
20:09You're one of his followers.
20:11I know you are.
20:12You have a Galilean accent just like him.
20:14Listen to me.
20:15I've never watched the dice on this man.
20:19Leave me alone.
20:19Bye-bye.
20:27Bye-bye.
20:31Bye-bye.
20:39I don't know.

21:49Hey, brothers!
21:55Who is that?
21:59I don't know.
22:01I've never seen him.
22:03Did you catch anything?
22:07No!
22:09Nothing!
22:11Lower your nets off the right side of the boat!
22:15It's too late!
22:19Lower your nets from the right side of the boat!
22:23I tell you, there are fish!

23:20Master!
23:21It's you!
23:23Peter, do you love me?
23:35Master, I betrayed you.
23:39As I said you would.
23:43I'm so ashamed.
23:45But I told you that you would.
23:48Your shame is no concern of mine.
23:53Master, I...
23:56Do you love me?
24:02Master, you have to know that I love you.
24:05Feed my sheep.
24:08But, Master, I...
24:09Feed my lands.
24:11Shepherd my sheep.
24:13Feed my sheep.
24:15Yes. Yes, I will, Master.
24:17And remember this.
24:19When you are old, you won't be able to do as you did
24:22when you were young.
24:25Yes. Yes, I know that.
24:27Listen to me.
24:29You'll have to stretch out your arms
24:31for someone else to dress you
24:34and take you where you don't want to go.
24:47I knew it was the Lord.
24:49I've made breakfast for all of you.
24:57And your nets will hold.
24:59God!

25:19No.
25:20No.
25:21Brother, I'm just a poor fisherman.
25:42He was, he is the son of God.
25:46You are the rock.
25:51And he taught all of us to follow him by his example.
25:54But you understood him far better than I did.
25:58Perhaps.
26:00Perhaps not.
26:04Understanding comes for every person in their own time.
26:07Yes, but you did not deny him.
26:12You stood by him when he was put to death.
26:17I denied him.
26:19And what did you see in yourself when you did what he knew you would do?
26:27My shame.
26:32And...
26:32And...
26:34And what, brother?
26:38My soul.
26:41He lit a flame within you, brother Peter.
26:46Now you have to light a flame in others.
26:48All of you?
27:17I want you to listen to me carefully now.
27:24As I speak of a man, a prophet, Jesus of Nazareth.
27:32He was given to you by God and made known to you with the signs and wonders that God worked through him.
27:38And this man, Jesus, who they allowed to be crucified, he allowed it.
27:45And then God, his father, raised him up and released him from death.
27:51I see the Lord before me, said David.
27:56He's always at my right hand.
27:58David lived and he died.
28:00He's buried in his tomb, but David knew that God would send the Messiah and God would lift him away from death.
28:06God has made this man both Lord and Messiah.
28:11This Jesus, whom they crucified.
28:14I knew this man.
28:20I love this man.
28:22He was...
28:23He is the Messiah of love and constant forgiveness.
28:29Forgiveness to all before you, friends and enemies.
28:37Because how else are we to break free from vengeance?
28:39So I say to you, repent.
28:47Repent and be baptized.
29:09I baptize you in the name of Jesus.
29:23I baptize you in the name of Jesus.
29:35Peter and the other apostles were called before the Sanhedrin.
29:39The Jewish legislative body made up of Pharisees and Sadducees.
29:45They would question about preaching and healing a lame beggar in the name of Jesus.
29:50You're questioning us about a good deed done to a crippled man.
29:56You demand to know how he was saved by what power.
30:01So here's your answer.
30:03It was in the name of Jesus Christ, who was crucified and who God raised from the dead.
30:12There's no other way to salvation.
30:14And there is no other name under heaven given to anyone in the human race by which we can all be saved.
30:20Whatever judgment you hand down, whatever instructions or prohibitions we may receive,
30:26these matters are of no consequence to us.
30:28We will never stop speaking of Jesus of Nazareth.
30:33Of what he said and what he did.
30:36We will never stop preaching in his name and we will never stop shouting his name
30:40from the roofs of every house and from the tops of every mountain.
30:44I am the one.
30:48I am the one who was cured by this man.
30:51Many of you in this room know me.
30:54You know what I was.
30:58And you can see now what I am.
31:04Great is the power of the Lord.
31:06They were forbidden from preaching in the name of Jesus.
31:17They were taken to be flogged.
31:23But there was no denying that the Christians, as they would later be known,
31:28were a new and lasting spirit in the world.
31:36Peter took to the road to evangelize.
31:44His task was to go to the nations and convert the pagans,
31:49the ones who believed in the old gods.
31:52Peter traveled through Syracuse and Sicily,
31:55to Calabria on the mainland,
31:57and up through the Bay of Naples,
31:59and from there to the Appian Way,
32:01which led to Rome.
32:06And the people who were to
32:24have to be seen.
32:29I was a proud of him.
32:31But it was a good thing.
32:32I was a proud of him.
32:33I was a proud of him.
32:34I was a proud of him.
32:34Babylon.
32:57Shortly after Peter's arrival, a massive fire broke out in Rome.
33:01It devastated the city and destroyed four of its 14 neighborhoods.
33:07It was rumored that the Emperor Nero himself had ordered the fire to clear out areas for construction of a new palace complex.
33:31Aren't you thankful for receiving food from this man of God?
33:46Words of Satan!
33:48But how are we teaching kindness in others?
33:51We're comforting those who need our comfort.
33:53We're feeding those who need our bread and bringing water to those who are thirsty.
33:57Whether they thank us or not is a matter for men.
34:01It has nothing to do with God.
34:03Yes, Master.
34:05No.
34:06There's only one who deserves to be called master.
34:09According to the historian Tacitus, who was in Rome during the fire, Nero used the Christians as scapegoats.
34:34He rounded up their leaders and sentenced them to die on the cross.
34:51We?
34:52If you want them to die, surely whether they newcomer.
34:53Do thatar goes which way?
34:54Yes, Master.
34:56How do you take mindsets ase Mar Moses?
34:57Let's get out of the way that referralraphin this year!
34:59Under the way, he actually took this.
35:00This value was the finding of him right away from himself.
35:01So if you had to pray for him, he became theEST SIGERED reduce the freedom of my faith.
35:03But what am I trying to say to say to others?
35:04Is that situation?
35:05Peter followed the way of his master from beginning to end,
35:29spreading his faith and speaking his word.
35:32But he asked that his cross be fashioned differently, because he felt that he wasn't worthy to
35:41die as Jesus had died.
35:43He said that his cross be fashioned differently, because he felt that he was not worthy to die.
35:53He said that his cross be fashioned differently, because he felt that he was not worthy to die.
36:03He said that his cross be fashioned differently, because he felt that he was not worthy to die.
36:10He said that his cross be fashioned differently, because he felt that he was not worthy to die.
36:16Blessed are the pure in heart, Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount, for they will see God.
36:38And he might have been speaking of this man, to whom he entrusted everything.
36:44Jesus told Peter, you'll deny me.
36:47Not because he wanted Peter to resist or to test him.
36:51Instead, he gave Peter a way of seeing himself fully and clearly.
36:55And from there, a pathway within to real change.
37:01And that was the gift that Jesus gave to Peter and to the world.
37:17Peter was fascinating to me, because he was always a guy who was struggling to understand.
37:22And the fact that he was always described as being a hotheaded guy.
37:26So my interest is Jesus choosing Peter because of the flaws and the fallibility.
37:35Jesus is obviously a good judge of character.
37:38I think he chooses Peter for his strengths and his weaknesses.
37:41First of all, he's a fisherman, so he knows how to bait a hook, right?
37:44He knows how to catch things.
37:45He knows how to be patient, right?
37:46So all these qualities that make a good fisherman.
37:48But he also knows his weaknesses, as we know.
37:51And I think to be a leader of the community, you have to know your weaknesses,
37:54because you have to remember your reliance on God.
37:56And I think that made him the perfect disciple, in a sense.
38:00Richard Rohr, the spiritual writer, said that Peter comes to Jesus not by doing right,
38:06but by doing wrong, which I think is really beautiful.
38:09My old New Testament professor, Dan Harrington, used to say that the name Peter, Rock,
38:14might have been a little bit of a nickname and a little bit of a play in his character.
38:18So it's not beyond Jesus to use that kind of two ways, right?
38:21You're the rock in which I'll build my church, but you're also kind of a tough guy.
38:25You're kind of hard-headed, rocky.
38:26God's ways are not our ways.
38:28The person who doesn't have the appearance of a true believer has it at his core.
38:34And that's Peter, right?
38:35If there's a point to it, it's to remind us to try to judge character,
38:39not by our usual criteria, who's the best behaved, the most reliable.
38:43What's the greatest commandment, you know, to love?
38:46And the idea that you're changed by feeling, that through suffering and through emotional experience, you transform.
38:57The thing I love about him is how he's always saying, I don't get it.
39:02You think about somebody who's super emotional, it's a volatile way to live because you're yanked around by how you feel.
39:08He must have been terrified.
39:11I mean, it's one thing to be like with Jesus there and another thing to see him being led away.
39:16Yes, exactly.
39:17And knowing he's going to Golgotha.
39:19You just have the feeling that after that face-to-face and that level of repentance and forgiveness in the living moment,
39:27he became willing to go to his death.
39:29He wouldn't have denied him.
39:31Yeah, that's the real mystery and strength of Christianity.
39:34It's what happened between that moment and going on the road.
39:39Yeah, it has to have been the resurrection.
39:41A lot of people say, well, it was the disciples kind of remembering him.
39:45You don't put your head on the block for remembering.
39:47Peter, who was ready to go back to his old job, right?
39:50Yeah.
39:51I'm going to quit. I'm out.
39:52Yeah, so he needed something dramatic, and I think all the disciples did, to show this is real, the resurrection is real.
39:58And it needs to have been physical, visual, something that's unmistakable.
40:03And then he's changed.
40:04My favorite sequence, where he dives into the blue water, and then he's face-to-face with him.
40:10He's in that state of profound repentance.
40:13Jesus offers him forgiveness three times.
40:15They ask him three times, do you love me?
40:17To counterbalance Peter's denial three times, right?
40:20But he also doesn't say, do you apologize, right? It's all love.
40:25You know, the way you characterize it, he denied Jesus in the strongest possible terms, as they say in the newspapers.
40:30He could have kept denying.
40:31I didn't really mean it. I was under a lot of pressure. I didn't want to die, too.
40:35But he doesn't go there. He owns it.
40:37And that straightforwardness makes it possible for him to receive that love.
40:41And the risen Christ offers him not revenge.
40:44He offers him love and peace and forgiveness and reconciliation.
40:48I think this episode gets us back to the beginnings of Christianity,
40:52where we can see how strange it was, how reckless it was to commit to this.
40:57And that's what I took away from the final image.
40:59The resurrection, or Jesus himself, turned Peter's life upside down.
41:04We can see that and feel that.
41:06And it was so luminous. I found it very moving, that final image.
41:10In one of the chapels in Vatican City where the Pope prays, right after he's been named Pope,
41:15is the Michelangelo image of that, and it's Peter upside down,
41:19and Peter's staring out at you.
41:21And they often say, you know, when the Pope sees that,
41:24it's a reminder, you know, of who came first and what was sacrificed.
41:29He is the kind of selfless to believe the Cheese of Jesus andDid.
41:34He is the kind of selfless to believe in this life.
41:36The implementing of the Pope is so absurd,
41:38and he knows which внимание was made up of his family.
41:39He is the kind of selfless to believe in the world.
41:41And that's the most important thing for us,
41:43I think that he was raised against the Pope,
41:44that he is ready to do this.
41:48And he is so grateful for the God of the Pope.
41:50And he is so grateful for the Lord.
41:52And all the things that he has given us,
41:54he knows that he has to be taken care of by the Christians.
