Australia has reached a landmark agreement with UberEats and DoorDash that will introduce minimum pay and safety standards for delivery workers for the first time. Under the draft deal, couriers will earn at least A$31.30 per hour—bringing many on-demand drivers in line with casual worker wages. The agreement also includes mandatory injury insurance and greater job transparency. If approved by the Fair Work Commission, the new protections begin in July next year.

00:27A fair day, pay for a fair day's work, absolutely.
00:36Okay.
00:38These are the drivers, the gig workers, that deliver your food when you get onto the apps.
00:43And for too long, they were not getting paid decent wages in this country.
00:49For too long, they have not been getting minimum standards,
00:53which many other, or many other employees in this country enjoy.
00:59They have been fighting for a long time.
01:01Let me know when you're ready.
01:04Okay.
01:05Well, it's...
01:07This moment is really emotional for me.
01:11100 years ago, conditions of 100 years ago, without any super, you're sick, you've got to go to work.
01:19There's a hailstorm, there's a rain, you've got to go to work.
01:22You can't stop.
01:23You've worked 60 hours, just keep going.
01:26You don't have enough to pay your bills.
01:30Your legs are shaking, just keep going.
01:33Just one more order, one more hour, just need to keep going.
01:37That's the condition that these drivers were living under.
01:41Their families will return to home safely.
01:46And we're this close now to actually getting a minimum standard.
01:50And when I say this, I am proud, but I'm not proud as well, because we're not talking about a decent pay.
01:56We're talking about minimum ways.
01:58Let that sink in, everybody.
02:00It's a minimum ways that we've been fighting for over the last seven years.
