Crowds gathered in Beirut’s southern suburbs on November 24 as thousands attended the funeral of Haytham Ali Tabtabai, a top Hezbollah military commander killed in an Israeli strike the previous day. The attack, which hit a multi-story building, killed five people and wounded 28 according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.

The funeral procession saw Hezbollah members carrying the coffins of Tabtabai and others killed in the strike, as residents chanted messages of steadfastness. The killing comes despite a year-long ceasefire meant to halt hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah following months of clashes beginning in late 2023.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun urged international intervention to stop further escalation, while many Lebanese watch closely ahead of Pope Leo’s visit to Lebanon next week, hoping for a moment of national relief amid rising tensions.

Israel says its ongoing strikes target Hezbollah infrastructure, fighters, and weapons depots. Hezbollah has hailed Tabtabai as “the great jihadist commander” who worked “to confront the Israeli enemy until the last moment of his blessed life.”
