Activists staged a dramatic green sludge protest outside the EU Commission in Brussels, targeting European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever.

The demonstration highlighted opposition to the controversial EU-Mercosur trade deal, which critics say could allow banned pesticides back into EU food markets, threaten European farmers’ livelihoods, accelerate deforestation in the Amazon, and increase risks to indigenous peoples and land rights.

Frances Verkamp of Friends of the Earth Europe said: "A person dies from pesticides in Brazil once every two days. This is not just a trade deal — it’s a toxic deal for people, the environment, and food sovereignty."

The protest coincided with the meeting of EU trade ministers at the Foreign Affairs Council and is part of the ongoing StopEUMercosur tour across Europe, aiming to pressure policymakers to reject the agreement.

Watch as activists impersonate EU leaders, get doused in green sludge, and make a powerful statement about the environment, agriculture, and human rights.

00:45The demonstration is a symbol of the toxic nature of this deal.
00:50Pesticides that are currently illegal in Europe are going to be exported to the Mercosur countries under this deal,
00:56and then they're going to be re-imported in food for Europeans through this deal.
01:00Not only that, but Brazil is one of the highest users of pesticides in the world.
01:05In Brazil, a person dies from pesticides, one every two days.
01:09So this is a toxic deal because of the pesticides, but also because of the increase in disforestation,
01:15the risks of violence to indigenous peoples, and land grabbing.
01:19Well, what's very dangerous, especially for Europeans, is not only the potential of pesticides in food,
01:42but also the risk to the agricultural sector of the EU.
01:47As we know, farm workers in the EU have been in a very vulnerable position for a long time.
01:54So a flood in of cheaper goods is a risk of bankruptcy for even more farmers
02:00at a point when they're already at a breaking point.
02:02And they've said this over and over and over again, and it's just not being heard.
02:06And the risk of losing more farms in the EU is a risk to our food sovereignty.
02:36It concerns everyone because even if you're not working in an industry or if you're not a farmer,
02:53still farmers are feeding us and still you're going to be impacted with the food you're going to have on your plate.
02:59It's like one house, one planet, so we're all impacted even if you don't feel like you're linked to the trade directly.
03:29Because, today, we've partner all of a stronghold for everyone.
