00:00The physical footprint of Fidel remains in many areas of natural life,
00:04especially in science, technology and education,
00:07where he left a legacy that transcends generations.
00:10Details with Isabel Diaz from Havana, Cuba.
00:16For workers in information, technology and communications,
00:20Fidel continues to be a beacon and guide in their daily work.
00:23Nine years after his passing, his legacy lives on
00:26in the challenging times that inspired Cubans.
00:30For us, Fidel's impact on the University of Computer Science is fundamental.
00:36The UZI was Fidel's idea in 2002,
00:39and from the UZI was born the Havana Science and Technology Park.
00:43Therefore, of all Fidel's concepts on university and professional training
00:47and information technologies,
00:49on the importance of computer science for the development of the nation,
00:53and on the importance of science and innovation for the development of the country,
00:57from all these concepts,
00:59the University of Computer Sciences was born in its foundational concept.
01:05The legacy of a leader who committed to democratizing computer science
01:11by creating the Youth Computer Clubs in 1987,
01:14a milestone in popular access to technology.
01:16Well, it has a lot to do with us.
01:24I believe that no Cuban is unaware of Fidel's presence.
01:28It has a lot to do with us because of the mark he left on the sector.
01:31First of all, with the creation of the Youth Computing and Electronics Clubs,
01:35a wonderful program that was started by the Young Communist League,
01:38and that we inherited with his mandate to continue developing it.
01:41Now, almost 40 years later, the Youth Clubs have continued to take on a lot of tasks in Cuban society,
01:48and the effort is now being achieved with the training of children,
01:51teenagers, and young people in educational environments.
01:54The work is being done by the elderly, that is, the senior citizens,
01:58so that they too are not left behind by technology.
02:01We owe Fidel the effort to train the whole society in general
02:04to incorporate these new technologies
02:06and accompany the development of the country with greater knowledge.
02:17It was Fidel who always argued that Cuba should be at the forefront of knowledge
02:21and called for the conquest of the future as men of science and towards social justice.
02:26I believe that Fidel, with his extraordinary ability to travel to the future and then return,
02:36foresaw that, as he told us, Cuba's future had to be a future of men of science.
02:42And he founded our university, where engineers and architects are trained today.
02:47Our university is the leading center for almost all technical science degrees in the country.
02:52And that is really Fidel's legacy.
02:55It is something that guides us.
02:57And there are times when things are very difficult and you say to yourself,
03:01we have to do it this way, because it is what Fidel would expect from us.
03:05Fidel Castro's impact on Cuban science and technology is not limited to specific institutions or programs.
03:14It is a spirit that inspires new generations of researchers, teachers, and students,
03:18nine years after his passing.
