03:42This morning, it's their debut in the kitchen for their very first breakfast.

03:54Some little bread rolls.
03:55Yeah.
03:56And then get one strawberry tart and one lemon tart or something.
03:58So when I put it in basket, it looks really good.

04:04Michelle and Steve are working together for the first time in their lives.
04:11With an hour to go until guests and judges sit down to dine, Michelle is keeping things
04:17on track.
04:18I'm going to make some lovely little yoghurt pots.
04:21Michelle's little fruit compots, I think I'll call them.
04:24It's a typical French breakfast that we're going to do.
04:27So very relaxed, very chilled.

04:39Steve's no sense of timing really.
04:42He'll be down there and he'll be chatting to the ladies behind the counter even though
04:47he can't talk French.

04:58you did you do it no I'm every time Steve will be fine hosts who use fresh
05:05and local ingredients at breakfast could score highly with the judges oh you come
05:11bearing gifts how was the belangerie busy I bet it was do they have any nice
05:18things in there oh are they for a little sneaky treat for us that pain and turmoil yesterday
05:25but with a background in sports nutrition Rob and his wife Jackie also plan to play to their
05:32strengths today all right where we at we are still going to do a continental breakfast but
05:38we are going to try and just do a little bit of a healthy breakfast hot option we're asking
05:42them what they want yeah so I've made a list of everything so on the list I've said about boiled
05:49eggs poached scrambled so we're going to do the potatoes with a bit salt bit of pepper and then
05:55I was just going to quickly do the tomatoes because obviously we don't want to do a hash brown or
05:59anything like that do we sounds like a plan yesterday Nicola and Roy prepared ahead shopping for their
06:08breakfast menu at the local supermarket French toast bacon maple syrup hold on hold on we've got
06:15this way our up and we do vegetarian eggs benedict it's muffin poached egg on this sauce but with
06:34voice experience as a chef the pressure is now on him to deliver this is a lazy man's way of making
06:43pound it because um traditionally it's done it's done by hand whisk Nicola I'm really stroking here with
06:52this cooker the guests are starting to stir we had a great night's sleep actually didn't we yeah I think I
07:07snored a bit but apart from that yes I think I'm ready but they are not the only diners the hosts need
07:16to impress the judges are on their way and for them the second B of B&B is the key to success with our
07:29breakfast probably in 99% of the reviews they mention our breakfast and absolutely it brings people back
07:37all right hope I slept okay last night breakfast is most important meal of the day and you've got to
07:45have a really exceptional breakfast hopefully locally sourced you need to have a lot of choice in a B&B
07:54you want to make it look like home bonjour oh you can breast breast is served oh you weren't chatting to
08:03women and that's delayed yet no honestly the difference between a good breakfast and an excellent breakfast
08:10it's the quality of the produce at the the owners have chosen to serve it's called bed and breakfast so
08:16of course it's something that guests would be looking forward to it's 9 a.m. the guests are ready follow the bacon good morning how are you folks you are the tables are set
08:33ready I'll keep an eye on the potatoes and the hosts have everything to prove oh did you get a tag do you want to get one not pointed to some
08:47hotels you didn't get it then oh it should let me down there we should add two with them don't forget the
08:55toast the muffins in the dordogne the competition is coming to the breakfast table
09:17as the judges arrive at the B&Bs like to come ahead and take a seat there is that okay yeah would you
09:30like any tea or coffee for their fast real taste of what the aspiring hosts can do good morning
09:37I am loving the matching aprons look doesn't that look pretty I thought I got French traditional you just
09:49need a guy on a bike with a string of onions Michelle and Steve's hosting skills have already made an
09:56impression on judges that looks amazing right well we've set you both a place there if you want to
10:05sit and there you are Nick would you like to come and sit down this morning Nicola will be casting a
10:10critical eye on the ambience at the table with guests Sam and Alex I really like breakfast to
10:16be shared at one table because that's the most sociable way of having breakfast that creates
10:23sometimes absolute magic now I think Steve's been up to his folding again doesn't it what's that Steve
10:32what do you think it is what what does it look like is this a rose yes it's a rose rose for the ladies
10:39would you like a pastry I love one you look as if you were glaring at me meaningfully so everything
10:52you've got here is all from the local it is either the the bakery or this local supermarket yeah at the
10:59counters and everything yeah although would you like a top of coffee there we go the Pope's name Leo
11:06right there you go you enjoy your coffee breakfast was lovely it was beautifully presented I was really
11:16really pleased they decided to serve it in the kitchen and not in the dining room because it made
11:21it far less formal the only problem with serving it in the kitchen is that then they're hovering a bit
11:27Steve had been at his sculptures again and had made bits of kitchen roll into roses when I first
11:38looked in I thought oh someone's left no snot rag on the table it was a rose my rose fell over
11:47yesterday Ava praised Nicola and Roy's warm welcome checking in guests Alison and Janine
11:57don't trip in that we think of the way now she's watching to see if that charm extends to the
12:03breakfast table so the hot breakfast this morning is French toast with bacon and maple syrup or there
12:12is eggs Benedict in terms of the cooked breakfast the quality of the meat will be important how well the
12:17eggs are cooked as well do they offer a choice of eggs are they flexible if they've got vegetarian options
12:24available etc as well so breakfast is definitely key I'm going to try the eggs Benedict please
12:31veggie style eggs Benedict vegetarian I'm going to try the French toast is there a hollandaise sauce
12:40homemade by Roy it is yes he's just made up I'll go for that yes no problem okay but you soon what do
12:48you think of the spread the selection they've chosen for us today I think it's quite typical do you think
12:52the quality of the cheese is going to be up to French standards or it's sliced processed cheese yeah
12:58turning more bacon only put four on I guess we've at me a lot of water not right yeah into the muffin
13:11I give more than that in future yeah okay French toast thank you thank you okay thank you
13:24what's that more hollandaise it's a bit fluid I think it could be a bit more emulsified
13:30I think they should have had a bigger breakfast I do too but we're against time no but here time
13:43doesn't like as I think if you if you're gonna do it properly yeah yeah yeah hello you have to do it
13:49right people will wait for good food I think it sort of set the the bar quite high seeing hosts wearing a
14:00professional uniform here so expectations were high from the start in terms of the cooked offering
14:06the egg itself could have been a bit fuller and the yolk wasn't perhaps as friendly as could be the
14:13hollandaise sauce wasn't quite as emulsified as expected as well you have from mine no you want me
14:24to shut up now don't you no just please you're like shut up a few slip-ups left Jackie and Rob on the
14:34back foot with judges yesterday if you'd all like to take a seat they'll need to prove to Andrew and
14:39Brennan and guests Joe and Karen they're back on track we have decided to keep it within keeping
14:46with where we are in France so it won't be a full English breakfast I'm afraid we have a selection of
14:52continental for you we do have some hot items as well petty potatoes with some roasted vine tomatoes
15:00and we have a selection of eggs if you'd like poached eggs scrambled egg boiled eggs which they could be
15:07nice a poached egg I think what's really really important between whatever type of breakfast you
15:14you have is choosing what your theme is going to be are you going to have a USP with that the eggs will
15:20come out fine your eggs always come out lovely just remember with your poached eggs to just pat them
15:25dry yeah so they're not wet you need to make a choice and stick with it here we go Karen oh thank you
15:32the plates are hot because they've been in their warmer so poached egg potatoes and some fine
15:40potatoes tomorrow to catch up it's anybody would like what I would really like please
15:47salt and pepper of course yes that is downstairs you can tell that they've they've gone and got very
15:57good ingredients because the eggs are a lovely color really smooth texture and um the um tomatoes
16:04are really tasty it all looks very fresh as well yeah really nice yeah I have to give you compliments
16:10the eggs are very well cooked the tomatoes are lovely thank you thank you um you mentioned before that you
16:16wanted to go with health and well-being and the nutrition side so would you feel nervous if you said
16:21that this is the way we're doing it no no really genuinely I think we can all say we would not be put
16:28up if you said that this was going to be an absolutely health driven breakfast yeah in fact I think for many
16:36people that would be hugely attractive yeah as the guests head off to pack their cases the hosts can reflect on their
16:45fast breakfast of the competition thank you for a lovely breakfast that was very nice appreciate it we had a good
16:52breakfast yeah would you like a little hug oh thank you come on we've got to give yourself a pat on the back
16:58would you like a hug come on I think we've done really well of course we have oh come here you did well
17:04breakfast breakfast breakfast isn't it I kind of ain't no my job and I hate people you know tell me
17:11what to do but I I knew it was okay did it make you cry no well you made me cry yesterday because you
17:17said about my room not being um enough home furnishings and I had a cry oh love it's okay why didn't you tell
17:24me that just let's move on okay how was everything for you lovely thank you well done you're very
17:32welcome I think it went extremely well actually I think it went better than I thought it was gonna go
17:38yeah well that was really good and your eggs were fabulous that was all right that was all right no
17:44they were really good every guest who stays at the b&b's will be filling in feedback forms please
17:53rate the following on a scale of one to five one being very dissatisfied and five being very satisfied
17:59and adding comments to the visitor books which will be vital evidence for the judges in their final
18:04decisions but they'll also be watching check out very closely thank you you are very very welcome
18:13it's been an absolute pleasure to have you stay with us for our first night it was lovely just a few
18:19minor things perfect tissues in the bedroom yeah yeah lovely and a glass in the bed in the bathroom
18:26yes so thank you very very much thank you yeah thank you lovely comments yeah and your tips yeah yeah
18:34have you any helpful feedback for us nothing you've done really well your hosting skills are
18:38magnificent no i think maybe once you get going you'll get more local knowledge of where you're living so
18:43you maybe grab maybe get more local maybe produce yeah but um what we said wherever you were we'd come
18:50to you oh no thank you so much and say we really thoroughly enjoyed your company yeah we enjoyed yours
18:55as well yeah we will meet up again thank you so much yes and how was your stay we had a lovely stay

19:21you couldn't want a more welcoming couple as hosts i think they were exceptional
19:26lovely people it's emotional that when they said that don't it
19:32as the hosts say au revoir to their first guests and the judges there's no chance for a breeder
19:41as the next challenge is on their doorsteps oh no it's one of those again
19:52oh the golden envelope come on it feels heavy day two tonight two rooms have been booked for one night each
20:05you need to change over room one and prepare room two you need to give your guests a welcome gift on
20:11arrival the judge will inspect the rooms at 3pm oh there you go okay we've got to get shopping let's go and do
20:19this let's do this right come on
20:25the challenge is designed to test how they cope with one of the most demanding tasks bnb owners face
20:32the same day changeover the changeover can be quite stressful especially if it's a tight changeover
20:41they need to be really thorough to make sure it's absolutely squeaky clean and there's no evidence
20:46of anybody before and they've got to be quick too and today the judges are switching bnbs each team will
20:54have a fresh pair of eyes to impress come inspection time we're off the sun is shining it's going to dry
21:01me washing and we're going to crack on the last thing you want is a guest walking through the door
21:07with the washing machine going you're going to stay in a aspirational home you don't want to see
21:13what downstairs is supposed to be doing
21:20if you could maybe hoover downstairs yeah i need to iron the sheets for this and then i just need
21:27to go out and get a couple of bits because we need to get some more bedding no worries
21:30but with a life-changing prize up for grabs the judges weren't going to make things easy
21:40today there's a curveball
21:41is that my phone hello oh so what time you come in yeah yeah beer news what we've got a guest
21:53arriving early that's lovely we'll welcome them with open arms
21:58in rural france the hosts are facing their first ever changeover
22:12a key test of the competition with a luxury bnb at stake just put too much bubbles in here
22:19so every time you go like this it's just too too too foamy
22:26i love that it's just too too foamy and with guests arriving early the race to be ready is on
22:35steve that took one there steve that took one there it goes in there here there's a sink in here
22:42that's what we use what did you put in it destroyed me because it's like a bubble bath look at this
22:48i only put a little square no you didn't you put half a bottle in no i didn't honestly well look at
22:54this it can't talk can't lie i want it to be clean we're wasting time i'm going to clean kitchen
23:06no but i've got another flower i've got to do the floor again well don't put anything in i'm not gonna
23:11i've got a receipt early check-ins are a reality of bnb life and for the judges keeping calm under
23:20pressure is a must the time's against us and um roy's had to go shopping on his own so i just have
23:28to crack on and just use brand new bed that hasn't been through the machine but i can't wait for two
23:34hours for the washing machine to go and get it dried so i just have to make do with what i've got
23:41i think i've been hard on in the last 24 hours this morning i criticised this breakfast and
23:46it's it's time and it's getting everything right it is stressful
23:53no sugar put a slight like a not a burn mark but an outline of the iron which
24:01isn't going to come out now so i'm just going to turn the sheet round so it's
24:04it's the bottom of the bed and let's hope the guests don't
24:07yeah notice for hosts with no hospitality experience mistakes are to be expected
24:17but learning from them is what really counts in this competition
24:22maybe oh i just quickly whizz out to the shops because they're shutting 10 minutes for their
24:26break i've quickly whizzed around to get the sheets unfortunately i forgot the duvet covers so you need
24:31to whizz down there so i have the iron on yeah and then i can quickly get them done the rest of the
24:36beddings will be done it's just literally two duvet covers to go on so it's now 20 to 2. i need to
24:42be ready for when these guests turn up and you need to be gone yeah
24:49as well as presenting two immaculate rooms the hosts have also been tasked with providing
24:54a welcome gift for their guests let's go and have a look are you sure you know what an orchard looks
25:00like we'll be looking in a welcome gift the thought that's gone into it yeah
25:06locally sourced or natural picked in the garden or home baked i make lemon drizzle cake
25:15doesn't matter if the guests are coming in early this cake is being made but their little gift is
25:19going to be the little recipe for this and some flowers which is nice and personal i think yeah
25:26you're good yeah you're good yeah it's a lovely day out there yeah and there's some fresh mint
25:31growing out there so i think we could make some lovely fresh mint tea yeah and the guests could
25:36sit on the patio and maybe just have a little chat sounds like a plant sounds like a plant
25:42i think just using what they've got around them is going to be great and it's it's how they do that
25:47you know whether it's just the most beautiful posy of flowers or maybe they baked something using
25:53raspberries that are on a bush in in the garden for me it's going to be the way in which they implement
25:59it let's just split up and have a look there's a pear tree oh get some no they're not big enough
26:07listen if we just get figs then see if there's out on these trees if not come and pick some of these
26:12let's just use these figs are hard but not as hard as this yeah but let's just put them out anyway yeah
26:19you like a nice fig oh yeah but they're about that size they're not like this they're not that big
26:24yeah no they're not a carton what you have in a packet they're dates well that's what i mean dates
26:31and then they're figs yeah figs is different right come on steve let's pick some flowers
26:42but for all the hosts time is running out why's it taking him for so long oh hello
26:50in about three shops i look again with these no white ones yep that's absolutely fine well done mission
26:57accomplished well done as the judges are on their way right i'm still going to put the figs out are you
27:04going to put these in a dish or somewhere some of them just do whatever you want to do let's just get
27:08them in yeah are we done no i'll put them in a vase in here wait wait no no no no no no no no wait
27:15and with everything to play for no one wants to slip up now we've got bins we know our mistakes but
27:23whether we learn from them or not another thing what time we on quarter michelle's like she's on steroids
27:29she just needs to she just needs to calm down a little bit that's all the hosts have pulled out
27:37the stops hello bonjour i'm nicola i'm one of the judges hello i'm nickel as well
27:48but now the welcome is over the scrutiny begins
27:52oh it smells gorgeous what sort of cake is it lemon drizzle cake so you made it yes i thought roy was the
28:00chef he is the chef but i do like to cook a lot at home i do all the cooking he doesn't want to cook at
28:06home well he probably does sometimes but i don't let him let's show you this room nicola the rooms are
28:14under the judges microscopes and at this stage in the competition there is nowhere to hide
28:21they've got to remove forensically all evidence of the people who've been in the room before
28:26um so you need to put your specs on if you're over a certain age and they need to be really thorough
28:34we always use 100 cotton it's a pretty duvet cover actually lovely got a nice bin yep blue brush
28:43it's lovely and clean clean as a whistle just the one glass yeah because there's uh just one single
28:51person still in the room ah i didn't realize that lovely oh you're fine i really liked the fresh
29:00flowers and then a little posy and then a recipe for the cake of the day that was very sweet
29:08i think they managed today and the challenges that they were thrown at them really really well with aplomb
29:13so this is the pigeonery yes excellent really cute isn't it beautiful and let me guess
29:41a little bird told us you like folding things i've got i've got too much time on me obviously
29:48so what gift have you left for the guests right well we've picked these beautiful flowers
29:53and then we've been picking the figs they're baby peaches aren't they but then they're not ripe
30:01right okay i'm not sure whether from a health and safety point of view
30:06it's permitted to use those but for future a really lovely idea the idea is brilliant now
30:13right we're gonna leave you to it enjoy thank you we'll be looking to make sure everything that has
30:21been cleaned has been cleaned to a good standard you might miss the tiniest bit of dust on a countertop
30:26or you might not polish all the watermarks off that's really not as important as it having been
30:32cleaned check for cleanliness check for everything there's no hand towel as i can see they are a hand
30:40towel in the swans
30:45um yeah i'm not sure how i feel about towel art shows very good few watermarks
30:52so having dusted on top of the shower head which you know they're new to it as well so it's not
31:03they just need to be told hello hello must be rob i am hi i'm eva one of the judges hi eva lovely to
31:14meet you lovely to meet you yes please come on in sure thank you are you about ready we are about
31:21ready just a few final touches was that your mission for the day yeah yeah did you find what you were
31:28looking for we did yeah well sort of yeah it would do it's better than having sheets that have been
31:35marked by the iron oh right yeah so i am i sent this lovely man here on a mission all right he's
31:41accomplished my mission yes so so i think that has to go into the bedroom for the next guest then
31:46yeah yeah which is i'm going to quickly iron them so i'm going to leave you in the lovely capable
31:52hands of rob yeah we'll have a look at the bathrooms there a change of a day is is a busy day
31:59it's about starting fresh everything will have to be clean the bathroom will have to be refreshed
32:04with new towels everything cleaned up and um the room should be in a pristine condition for the
32:09arriving guests i can see that you've really got the eye for details well you and jackie maybe
32:14well to be fair to be fair that's jackie's work you know i can't take the credit for that yeah yeah
32:20she's brilliant at that it's time for me to do a more thorough inspection of the bedroom and bathroom
32:25no problem at all i'll leave you to it and then you know where we are no worries

32:42jackie and rob did well today it's been a very overwhelming day for them but i found that
32:46there is scope to improve the cleanliness standards in some area the room and bathrooms weren't dirty but
32:51i did find a few lapses in terms of this dusting in some areas due to something where we could see an
32:58improvement in quality moving forward
33:03the inspection may be over but the challenge is far from done
33:08as the early guests are arriving
33:12so we've got guests arriving early and you're ready absolutely ready we are about ready just a few final
33:17touches how did it feel that you suddenly had an early guest today we're all over it
33:22and the judges will be looking to see who will keep a cool head when the real test comes knocking
33:31right we've got the wine out ready you never know who's going to turn up on time or not it is a
33:36pressure pressure point and when the door knocks you are on show
33:41the competition to win a bmb in france is heating up hello hello welcome
33:58the hosts are facing a true test of bmb life the early guest check-in hello hello welcome
34:05hi and the judges are watching to see who can stay calm under pressure
34:14and still deliver a warm welcome

34:30oh wow beautiful it's a beautiful day out there and there's a beautiful garden out there
34:36so if you'd like to have a seat out there and then i'll bring you some drinks perfect sounds

34:45jackie was perhaps a bit nervous today the guests arrived early but sadly it is something that they
34:50will have to get used to talk about there yeah yeah but it's only day two and i think there is
34:56potential in there their enthusiasm really made up for the little lapses oh wow so it's just a little
35:04welcome gift for you oh look at that we have some fresh mint yeah and we just have a few french
35:10delicacies yeah please enjoy it's stunning thank you you're welcome enjoy it's actually really nice
35:17yeah it sort of goes with the whole atmosphere yeah doesn't it yeah it's really soothing relaxing a bit like a day spa
35:25and this is your room for the night come on charming yeah nice and it's nice and airy yes on sweet bath the wi-fi code's there for you
35:39water station for you yeah and there's a little homemade gift from us as well oh bless you thank you
35:44yeah it's um flowers from the garden and the recipe for my lemon cake which you hopefully you'll enjoy

35:58my first impressions of nicola and roy very warm very friendly very open-hearted got a really good
36:05first impression actually genuine folk we always call this part the chef sure you can't really serve it

39:26separate jobs but now that they're able to do something together it's a joy for them they were
39:32completely ready for the early arrival they weren't phased in the slightest however the swans were so
39:40elaborate today that there wasn't a hand towel in the bathroom because he had to use all the linen
39:45oh my goodness oh i think he saw on our faces that i don't approve oh well you got them prepared
39:50for my arrival tomorrow then because it's not for me you've ruined the swan it's dead it's dead
39:57it's just one way this one hold on look i'll revive it i genuinely felt warm in their their company
40:05they welcomed us as if we were long lost friends and they proceeded to do that with all the guests i did

42:07it already i get the sense that there's a calmness to everything very calm yeah which is a bit of a
42:12contrast with my experience today yeah actually you met rob and jackie well it's been quite an eventful
42:20time i think for rob and jackie since the start because as we discussed yesterday they had some
42:25issues with the bedding missing bedding and so on arrival today i found out that and had to buy
42:32some fresh duvet covers yeah so when i inspected the bedroom the bed obviously weren't made just yet
42:41less than would you like a glass of wine now you're talking i don't know if it was the stress uh but i
42:51felt like jackie was a bit maybe overwhelmed yeah i think the jackie in particular seems to be flustering
42:58a lot um which is a shame because she is so so lovely so lovely comes from a good place yeah it's
43:06she's trying to do well and she really wants to help but i think it's about finding that balance
43:11yeah i absolutely agree with you and you're kind of rooting for them and you want them to just stop
43:17take a deep breath and start again in an orderly fashion but then how many times
43:23can we keep on telling them this i think tomorrow with them will be a big tell
43:28the hosts are learning fast and starting to find their stride and the spirit of competition is
43:38taking hold we've had a few issues to deal with today we'll see what challenges are set for us tomorrow
43:45and go from there and see what happens i think the more and more we get into the competition
43:51we're enjoying it more yes there's going to be a few more curveballs but hey it's not what life's about

44:11the stakes are rising the competition is ramping up there are no clear favorites at the moment because

44:23competition goes wild because there is a full house of guests it's going to keep them on their toes
44:31next time bounce on that one and then bounce on that one slightly chaotic full houses cause chaos
44:39i noticed i didn't have a sheet on my bed look if you tried to blag it we'd have known and an evening
44:44meal service wow it's got a bit of a kick i don't like spicy food tests who is thriving they're going
44:51to be finished and it looks really bad and who is just surviving you're doing great jackie no i'm not
