00:00Prince William and Kate Middleton decided to break this royal tradition at Prince George's christening.
00:07Prince William's push to modernize the monarchy started early,
00:11and one quiet change at Prince George's christening hinted at his vision for the future.
00:17It's no secret that Prince William is keen to modernize the monarchy when he takes the throne.
00:23He is already shaking things up before that day comes.
00:26One of his earliest breaks from royal tradition took place at Prince George's christening.
00:32It might seem like a small detail.
00:34It quietly signaled a big shift in how he sees the royal family's future.
00:40Prince George was christened at the Chapel Royal at St. James's Palace in October 2013.
00:47Although they ensured the late Queen Elizabeth II was the first to know about his birth,
00:52the new parents decided to do things differently for his christening three months later.
00:58On October 23, 2013, Prince George was christened in an intimate ceremony at the Chapel Royal at St. James's Palace,
01:08wearing a handmade replica of the christening gown originally worn by Queen Victoria's daughter back in 1841.
01:16Guests later enjoyed a christening cake made from a tear of their wedding cake at Clarence House.
01:21So far, so traditional.
01:24So what exactly was it that broke royal protocol?
01:28How did Prince George's christening break with royal tradition?
01:32According to royal expert and courtier's author Valentine Lowe,
01:37the service itself was in many respects a very traditional royal christening.
01:42However, the Cambridges did things a little differently when it came to selecting George's godparents.
01:47Rather than filling the list with senior royals and aristocrats,
01:53only one of the seven godparents, Prince William and Kate, chose was from the royal family.
02:01William and Kate broke tradition for Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis' christenings, too.
02:06The couple kept the same modern approach for their younger children.
02:11Princess Charlotte, who was christened at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham in July 2015,
02:18has godparents made up of friends and loved ones.
02:22He was christened at the Chapel Royal at St. James's Palace,
02:25and his six godparents were chosen from the couple's inner circle.
