The same-gender kiss was cut from the Buzz Lightyear origin story before being restored following an open letter from unnamed Pixar staff alleging the studio censored "nearly every moment of overtly gay affection" in its films.

00:14According to one of the producers of Lightyear,
00:16Disney was hesitant about featuring a kiss between two lesbian characters in the film.
00:21The Buzz Lightyear origin tale is Pixar's first animated feature film to include a same-gender kiss.
00:26A producer for the movie told Mercury News that Disney was supportive of the inclusion of a same-sex couple,
00:32character Alicia Hawthorne and her wife, in the film,
00:35but there was definite pushback on having that kiss.
00:38The kiss was initially cut during the creative process amid conversations around intimacy.
00:43But after a March 9th open letter from anonymous Pixar staffers alleging Disney had censored, quote,
00:48nearly every moment of overtly gay affection in past studio titles,
00:52the decision to reverse course was made,
00:54and the kiss featuring Uzo Aduba-voiced character Alicia and her wife was restored.
00:58The producer said,
00:59we got the opportunity to put it back in and that was really exciting.
