00:04Tyler Perry clarified his involvement when the topic of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars came up.

00:17During the wide-ranging conversation, the prolific producer was asked if Will Smith would keep his namesake soundstage at Tyler Perry Studios,

00:25as the 12 stages are named after someone Perry admires.

00:28He hesitated before answering,

00:30If I talk about it, then it becomes overshadowing of everything else we talked about.

00:34That will be the headline for sure.

00:36But Perry clarified reports that he, quote, comforted Smith after the onstage attack.

00:41Perry, along with Denzel Washington and Bradley Cooper, were all seen approaching Smith in the audience after the moment

00:47and looked to be consoling the King Richard star and Best Actor winner.

00:51There's a difference between comforting and de-escalating.

00:54That's number one.

00:55And I left early to get to Chris to make sure he was okay.

00:58Being friends with both of them has been very difficult.

01:01When Perry approached Smith, he said the actor was devastated and couldn't believe what happened.

01:05Adding, I think he is very much in reflection of trying to figure out what happened.

01:09Perry told King that he thinks Rock making a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia, triggered something inside Smith.

01:16I want you to understand that something happened that was extremely painful for Will as well.

01:21That is no excuse.

01:22He was completely wrong for what he did.

01:24But something triggered him that is so out of everything he is.
