00:00Look at this for you, Brett.
00:01Can't believe we're here.
00:04Stunning.
00:05Now the chance to make it real begins.
00:08Welcome to the first bed and breakfast.
00:10We've got a guest arriving early.
00:11Lovely.
00:13Across three weeks, six couples will fight for the prize of a lifetime.
00:20Walking away with the keys to this extraordinary B&B in the heart of the French countryside.
00:25But only one couple will take them.
00:32Who wins this stunning prize lies in the hands of four expert judges from the world of hospitality.
00:41Eva Jeunin, who's inspected hundreds of hotels for the prestigious AA.
00:46The competition has been so tough this week.
00:48Nicola Cross.
00:50Oh, snogging swans.
00:52Elite inspector for the exclusive B&B guide sawdays.
00:57Slightly chaotic, as they say, up north.
01:01And award-winning B&B owners Andrew John and Brennan Street.
01:05Nobody's perfect.
01:06Yeah.
01:07Well, nobody's perfect.
01:11Whoa!
01:13Come on, hurry up.
01:15Come on, look at her. Stop asking me questions.
01:18I've posed it all up again.
01:19Well, you haven't posed anything.
01:20I'm flagging.
01:22Oh, God.
01:23Do they have a problem?
01:27I'm not sure if I was told just for them.
01:29The Dordogne, one of France's most cherished inland escapes.
01:41Its sun-drenched valleys and storybook villages draw more than three million visitors a year.
01:48Countless B&Bs vie for their custom, and soon it will be the battleground for three couples fighting to win their own.
01:55Touching down at Bergerac Airport with their eyes on the prize of a lifetime.
02:05Winning a B&B would be the most fabulous thing in our lives that would ever happen.
02:10We're hungry for it.
02:11We will throw in blood, sweat and tears for this.
02:13There's no stopping us.
02:14We have grafted all our lives to get what we've got.
02:20This opportunity has come along, and we are absolutely going to smash it.
02:25We've had lots of ups and downs, and life has been a bit of a roller coaster.
02:30I think it will be a fresh start.
02:31A fresh start.
02:32A real big challenge.
02:35Game face is on.
02:36The first chance to size up the competition.
02:41Michelle and Steve.
02:43Hiya, Steve.
02:43Hi, Roy.
02:44How you doing?
02:45You alright, man?
02:45How you?
02:46Where have you come from?
02:48Barnsley.
02:49Can you not tell with his posh accent?
02:51Oh, lovely.
02:52I'd say, well, okay, but I have no idea where that is.
02:55It's a fabulous place.
02:57I'm sure it is.
02:58As well as being ambassadors for their hometown of Barnsley, Michelle runs a knitting business,
03:05and Steve is a builder.
03:08Me and Michelle's been together roughly 45 years, and we've been married 40 years this
03:14September.
03:16And it, um, she grew on me.
03:21What do you mean, grew on you?
03:23Like a flower.
03:25At the moment, our lives are quite separate.
03:27Steve goes off and does his job.
03:29I do my job.
03:31However, this is an absolute new venture.
03:34It gives us more time as a couple together, and that's what we're looking forward to.
03:39Yes, to grow even stronger.
03:42Oh, I like that.
03:47I'm Rob.
03:47Hi, Rob.
03:48I'm Jackie, everybody.
03:49Hi.
03:50So what do you do, then?
03:51Sport scientists.
03:52What's that?
03:52So I work with many athletes on their strength and conditioning, nutrition.
03:56Oh, I think I could do it one-to-one.
04:03Jackie and Rob from South East London are looking for a new direction.
04:08It feels like the right time.
04:10It's time to put us first now.
04:11You know, we've spent the last 30 years putting the kids first.
04:15Now it's time for us.
04:17Four years ago, I had a complete heart block, and I was fitted with an emergency pacemaker.
04:22So it was totally out of the blue, and it totally changed our whole world upside down.
04:28Makes you realise how fragile life is, and how quickly things can change overnight.
04:32But now just seems the right time to actually go and do something.
04:36An adventure.
04:37The next chapter of our life.
04:38The next chapter of our life.
04:39Yeah.
04:40Of our middle-aged life.
04:42Yeah.
04:43I'm Roy.
04:44Roy.
04:45Nicola.
04:45Nicola.
04:46What do you do?
04:46What's your job?
04:47I'm a chef.
04:48Oh, oh, are you?
04:49Oh, yeah.
04:50Hold up.
04:50You're the competition, are you?
04:51Don't be afraid.
04:52Don't wash your feet.
04:53Be terrified.
04:54Yeah, yeah.
04:58Originally from Northern Ireland, Nicola and Roy currently live in Paynton in Devon.
05:04I've been a pastry chef probably 30-odd years.
05:07I work in a little coffee shop in Brixham.
05:11I work in a sheltered housing scheme for over 55s.
05:16I really enjoy my job, but I'd like a change.
05:19I'd like to move on and do something completely different.
05:21So it's time to do what we've always wanted, run a B&B.
05:26We're not looking for an easier life because running a business is not an easier life at all.
05:31We just love the idea of having the challenge and doing it ourselves and not for other people.
05:35Yeah.
05:35And we will eat, sleep and drink this.
05:40Who are we waiting for?
05:41Does anybody know?
05:42I don't know.
05:44There are just two more people to board the coach as the hosts are about to meet their first judges.
05:51We have an award-winning bed and breakfast in Europe that's been operating for seven years.
05:57Top 1% of all boutique hotels in the world.
06:01The hospitality trade is no stranger to us.
06:03Welcome to the hosts and we will be your judges.
06:09I can't express enough how much of an opportunity this is.
06:15We had to work 15 solid years running the businesses that we did to raise the funds to be able to do what they could win.
06:24Yeah.
06:25It's life-changing for one lucky couple.
06:29We will be judging you, but we'll be guiding you along, giving you hints, setting you challenges, but there are no problems, only solutions.
06:38Absolutely.
06:40And we're off.
06:44The hosts are on route to their new homes and businesses for the week.
06:50Each couple would take charge of a rental property in the French countryside, all within 30 minutes of each other.
06:57Each comes with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a breakfast dining area and a fully equipped kitchen.
07:07But there's a twist.
07:09Every property has been stripped of bed linen and amenities.
07:12It's up to the hosts to add the finishing touches to turn them into the perfect B&B.
07:19Over the week, they'll welcome guests and be judged on their presentation, food, cleanliness and, above all, their hosting skills.
07:29What makes you guys think you're different to anybody else?
07:34Oh, we're certainly different.
07:37Our graft is absolutely there, we know that.
07:39But do you know what? For us, it's me and Steve.
07:44Steve's, well, he's a builder, but he's also...
07:47I do a little bit of magic.
07:48He does a lot of magic. Loads of magic.
07:52So you keep them entertained as well?
07:53Oh, honestly, it just blow you away.
07:56What do you bring to this competition?
07:58We're very interested, obviously, in nutrition.
08:01We're both qualified in different kinds of massage, which we would like to offer, and to offer retreats.
08:08What a lovely place to do it in.
08:11We know exactly how important food is to the bed and breakfast.
08:15What would your slightly different take on a breakfast be?
08:19We have a few things up our sleeves that we want to try out.
08:22So do you want to tell us what that is right now?
08:25No, not really.
08:27What, too much competition?
08:28Too much competition, yeah.
08:30Wise competitors.
08:30The hosts have made their first impressions, but soon they'll be under the scrutiny of all the judges.
08:42Only they have the power to decide whose life will be changed forever.
08:46We're looking for owners who are confident, and they're people lovers.
08:53They've got to be people lovers.
08:56I think people underestimate how much work goes into it.
08:59It's not just about opening your door to some stranger and just let them sleep in a bed.
09:03It's about making a warm and, you know, inviting environment.
09:08It's the owners who are the most important part of your stay.
09:13It's going to be one of the toughest weeks of their lives.
09:16There will be tears.
09:17There will be tantrums.
09:18But it is going to be so worth it.
09:24As night falls, the hosts finally arrive at their B&Bs.
09:29Amazing.
09:31Oh, look at that.
09:32Who would have thought that was down that dark path?
09:35Oh, my God.
09:41Oh, wow, Steve, look at this.
09:46It's all right, kitchen.
09:47It's their first chance to plan how they'll put their vision in place.
09:53Take a few.
09:55Oh, I love it.
09:56What's a cooker like?
09:58It's a cooker like.
09:59It's a little chef thing, isn't it?
10:01It's a cooker.
10:03Oh, this is lovely.
10:07This is absolutely amazing.
10:09Beautiful.
10:10This is nice.
10:12Yeah.
10:12Oh, Steve.
10:13We made this look special.
10:15Tonight, the only decision is to choose which room will be theirs and which will be for their guests.
10:22It's about the guests.
10:25Yes, it is.
10:26I think I know which bedroom is going to be for us.
10:30It's them two singles.
10:31Absolutely.
10:33And I can come and have a cuddle, can't I?
10:36No, I'm all right.
10:37I'm all right.
10:38Now it's been too long.
10:41This might have to be our room, purely for the fact that it gives the guests privacy as well.
10:46Yeah.
10:47We definitely need to give a guest these good rooms and we'll just take the small one.
10:50Yeah.
10:50But the hosts need their rest.
10:54Tomorrow, the real work begins.
10:57The race is on to prove who deserves this life-changing prize.
11:01The reality is, we have got a chance to win a B&B that will change our lives.
11:11Here's to me and you, kiddo.
11:12Bonne chance.
11:14Good luck.
11:16Yeah, yeah.
11:17How are you a bit nervous?
11:18Are you?
11:19Yeah, because it's not something we've done before.
11:21Sure, but we're here definitely to win.
11:23This is where it all begins.
11:31Early morning in the beautiful French countryside, and three couples are waking to the challenge
11:43of their lives.
11:44Oh, look at this.
11:45Oh, look at it, Steve.
11:46Look at this.
11:47Oh, we've got our own swimming pool.
11:52Oh, this is amazing, isn't it?
11:54Yeah.
11:54Today, they will become B&B hosts, competing to make their dream a reality and win the prize
12:01of a lifetime.
12:02I slept like a baby.
12:03Me too.
12:04What about you?
12:05Well, I didn't get to bed at half twelve.
12:06That's because you're obsessed around the kitchen, checking everything.
12:08I know, I know.
12:09But there is a lot at stake.
12:10Yeah.
12:11Like, wouldn't it be and be in France?
12:12Yeah.
12:13When does that ever come around?
12:14I had some very strange dreams.
12:15Did you?
12:16Yeah.
12:17It was mainly about beans.
12:19What, as in, like, baked beans?
12:20Baked beans.
12:21There's probably some hidden meaning in that dream.
12:22Probably.
12:23Over the next five days, the hosts will face a series of challenges set by the judges.
12:40Each one inspired by the real demands of running a B&B.
12:46At the end of the week, only two pairs of hosts will make it through to finals week
12:51and stay in the running to win the keys to their very own guest house in France.
12:59It's 9am sharp, and the first challenge begins.
13:03Oh.
13:04What's that?
13:05Someone's at the door.
13:06There you go.
13:07Big reveal.
13:08Ooh!
13:09Look!
13:10The golden envelope.
13:11Bring it in, bring it in, Patrick.
13:12We've got an envelope.
13:13We've got an envelope.
13:14Oh, God.
13:15Let's go.
13:16Terrified.
13:17Oh, right.
13:18Tonight, you will be hosting one quarter of a week.
13:21Oh, I'm sorry.
13:22I'm sorry.
13:23I'm sorry.
13:24I'm sorry.
13:25I'm sorry.
13:26I'm sorry.
13:27I'm sorry.
13:28I'm sorry.
13:29I'm sorry.
13:30I'm sorry.
13:31I'm sorry.
13:32I'm sorry.
13:33A couple for one night's stay in one room with breakfast tomorrow morning.
13:39You have six hours to furnish the bedrooms and bathrooms of your B&B.
13:43These note towels are supplied.
13:45Everything else you need to source locally.
13:47A judge will arrive to inspect your first B&B room at 3pm.
13:51After this point, you will not be allowed to make changes to your B&B.
13:55Guests will arrive between half three and half four.
13:58Challenge!
14:00Each couple has a budget of £1,000.
14:06Challenge on.
14:07This is right out of your alley, this bit.
14:09It is.
14:10Duvets, pillows and towels are provided.
14:13The rest is up to the hosts.
14:15It would obviously be nice to put some toiletries in here.
14:18Like hand washes and things like that.
14:20Yeah.
14:21There's no waste bin in here to put any tissues or makeup remover pads.
14:26Bins.
14:27We need to get some bins.
14:28But they need to plan carefully.
14:30The budget needs to stretch to food and provisions for the rest of the week.
14:34Toilet rolls.
14:35Oh yeah, we need toilet rolls.
14:36Three double duvet covers.
14:37Toothpaste, shaving foam, razors, deodorant.
14:38Razor deodorant.
14:39Yeah, yeah.
14:40Well many times you go away and you forget.
14:41Leave my suitcase full of clothes as well.
14:42And a pair of money by the bed.
14:43And a pair of money, yeah.
14:44They're coming and hauled.
14:45They should be with the brim.
14:46The hosts have also been allowed to bring a small box of items from home to help them reflect
15:05their own personalities.
15:07I'm not sure which room we'll put this in.
15:11No, I'm not.
15:12But I love it.
15:13Look at that, Steve.
15:14Yep.
15:15Pink chicken.
15:16You've no taste, have you?
15:20No taste.
15:21The competition is on and with a life-changing prize to play for.
15:26We've got work to do.
15:27Let's go.
15:28The hosts are ready to hit the shops.
15:31Really got to crack on now.
15:33You know where we're going?
15:34Yep.
15:35Are you anything coming there now?
15:37Nope.
15:38I don't know what direction I'm looking in.
15:40You're going that way.
15:41You're looking at that way.
15:42We're going that way.
15:43We're going that way.
15:44I know.
15:45Oh.
15:46I've got rocks out.
15:47Yeah.
15:49In six hours, the judges will arrive to inspect their newly furnished rooms.
15:55And they'll be looking to see which hosts have gone the extra mile.
16:02I'll be looking at whether they've thought about any little treats, anything that's above
16:07and beyond generous.
16:09I think guests will be expecting to see some elements of personalization in the room, whether
16:14it's a little homemade biscuit on arrival, a folded towel.
16:19And then the soft furnishings, they need to add something soft, a sense of luxury and fitting,
16:24I think, with the style of the house.
16:27It's about that lotion and sequa that makes the property unique.
16:32No strangers to house renovation, Jackie and Rob are the first to complete their shop.
16:39Can you see I really enjoyed myself?
16:41I did.
16:42I'm in my element.
16:43You are.
16:44I can see that.
16:45Well, just the interior stuff out here is so nice.
16:49Yeah.
16:50That'll give us a bit of edge, I think.
16:52I hope so.
16:54Wow.
16:56Now that were traumatic.
16:58I can manage trolleys.
16:59Oh, sorry.
17:01Michelle and Steve are working hard to stay within budget.
17:06It was a lot of money, that.
17:07Gosh.
17:08I mean, I know you've got to get a bit of quality.
17:09No, it's not.
17:10We've got quality.
17:11We've got quality.
17:12We've got lovely things.
17:13Yes, we have, Steve, you're right.
17:14Lovely things.
17:15Yeah, you're right.
17:16People will see that it's quality stuff.
17:17Yeah, yeah.
17:18That budget's got to last of the week.
17:20Do you know what I mean?
17:21Nicola and Roy's shopping trip has also added up.
17:25You spend like 200 quid in bedding.
17:27So?
17:28Yeah, that's all.
17:29I know, but you don't want cheap.
17:31Buy cheap, pay twice.
17:32See, if you'd have been there on your own, you'd have bought the cheapest.
17:34I wouldn't have.
17:35You'd have lifted the bed sheet at £5.99.
17:37No.
17:38And the bed sheet at £18.99, you'd have went, no, the £5.99.
17:41No, we bought cotton.
17:43Because Nicola was there.
17:44Mmm.
17:45The hosts now need to prepare their bedroom and bathroom to perfection and be ready to
17:53welcome the judges at 3pm on the dot.
17:56Oh, jeez.
17:57I don't think Jack Capes could lift that.
18:03Well, Roy's a better cook than I am.
18:07And I'm a better cleaner than he is.
18:09So, it just...
18:10It's not...
18:11I don't even know what's talked about.
18:12We just fall into these rolls.
18:14I'm making homemade shortbreads for the guests to arrive.
18:17So, as if we're behind, it'll pass a wee bit of time.
18:21We'll not be behind.
18:22There's no...
18:23There's no rule for error here.
18:24There's no room.
18:25Do you want me to move, love?
18:29Yes, please.
18:30Nicola, stop getting stressed, love.
18:33I'm not getting stressed.
18:34Everything's fine.
18:35For all our hosts, quickly finding a balance could be the key to an early edge in the competition.
18:46Nice and clean.
18:48When you go the extra mile for people, they see it and appreciate it.
18:52Nicola?
18:53Oh, for God's sake, Roy, what?
18:55Nicola?
18:56Yes, darling?
18:57We've only an hour.
18:58Do you need any hand up there?
18:59An hour?
19:00Yeah.
19:05You work your magic on the bedroom.
19:07I'll go downstairs, get tidied up in the kitchen.
19:10No problem.
19:11Alright, let's do it.
19:12Rooms will be assessed on both style and function, with judges paying close attention to the small
19:18details that make a stay feel effortless.
19:22But there's one major detail Jackie and Rob have overlooked.
19:27It's a slight issue.
19:29Hold on.
19:30I can't find any sheets for the bedroom upstairs.
19:34Have you looked in the cupboards?
19:35I have looked in the cupboards.
19:36All the cupboards?
19:37Yep.
19:38There's none at all.
19:40Their inventory clearly states bed linen is not included.
19:45I presumed, and I thought all the bedding was out there.
19:50So the only bedding that we have is the bedding that we slept on last night.
19:53Alright.
19:54We don't have time to wash and dry it.
19:57No.
19:58Okay.
19:59So we need a solution.
20:00We don't have time to go to the shops.
20:01Alright.
20:02We do.
20:03We have a major issue here, don't we?
20:04We do.
20:05I've known Michelle 45 years and I've never seen her in this situation.
20:17Because I want to win it.
20:18Stress.
20:19I want to win it and this is important.
20:21I'll go get the shower gels and everything.
20:26You'll start doing the bed.
20:27Oh.
20:28Yeah?
20:29Should this be ironed?
20:30I think it probably should.
20:31I've never seen you iron a sheet.
20:33Yeah, but we have sheets that you don't need to iron in Barnsley.
20:36Look at that, it's so natural.
20:37Does it really matter?
20:38It's about it looking nice.
20:39Nobody's seen us do it, have they?
20:40The judges will be looking to see whether the host's personalities are reflected in the
20:54rooms.
20:55These are from home and this is the sort of person I am.
20:58I like a bit of glitz.
21:00Can you see how it's changed the look as well of the room?
21:03It's just nice, isn't it?
21:05Amazing.
21:06You didn't even look.
21:07I did, I did.
21:08No, you didn't.
21:09I'm just going to try and make some decorative towels.
21:12It's the first impressions of what they'll see and they'll think, oh, that's quite nice,
21:18Oz, you've made an effort.
21:22The judges are on their way.
21:25Do you think these things are all great when you...
21:27I know.
21:28...when you get here?
21:29So I've had me orders to make a love heart.
21:32There you go.
21:34Now, doesn't that look quite pretty?
21:36We've misread the cards, all right?
21:38You're not a host.
21:39We're in it as a team.
21:40We just hold our hands up to it, you know?
21:42For me, the most important person is our guest.
21:44I'll shoot out, get the bed in, we'll get the bed made.
21:47They'll have a great time.
21:48This will be the lesson.
21:49You'll do that.
21:50OK.
21:51All right?
21:52Yeah?
21:57Does that look all right?
21:58Yeah, that's fine.
22:00Is it an eel or a swan?
22:02It's supposed to be a swan.
22:04I'll put the boy here.
22:06Aw.
22:07I hope he's all right in the cattery.
22:13Is it OK?
22:14Yes, it's lovely.
22:15No!
22:16Why would you do that?
22:20It's time for the judge's verdict.
22:23Hosts need to be prepared for the eventuality that something will go wrong.
22:28Making a mistake isn't the problem, it's how they deal with it.
22:32It's a boiling pot when you know you have guests coming.
22:35You want everything to be perfect.
22:36But sometimes, it's not perfect.
22:51In the Dordogne, the hosts have done all they can to prepare their guest rooms.
22:55But their time is up.
22:58Here we go!
23:00Ahead of tonight's guests, the judges have arrived for their first inspection.
23:06Bonjour!
23:07Bonjour!
23:09You won't be smiling like that in a minute.
23:12Hello!
23:13Hello, hello.
23:14How do you do?
23:15My name is Steve.
23:16Steve and Michelle.
23:17Hello.
23:18Hello, are you all right?
23:19Hello.
23:20Hello.
23:21How are you?
23:22Very well, thank you.
23:23And your name is?
23:24It's Eva.
23:25Eva, I'm Roy.
23:26Nice to meet you.
23:27Hello, I'm Nicola.
23:28Nice to meet you.
23:29Welcome.
23:30Thank you very much.
23:31Can I come in and see what you've done?
23:37Giving her verdict on Michelle and Steve's efforts is Nicola.
23:41Look at this.
23:42It's lovely.
23:43Just be careful on these steps.
23:44Yeah, I'll catch you if you fall.
23:48Who, with more than 25 years' experience inspecting luxury B&Bs, is looking for a touch of class.
23:55Right, here we go.
23:57Some people are incredibly generous about what they leave in bedrooms.
24:01Fresh flowers, absolutely lovely in a bedroom, makes a huge difference.
24:07Are you excited?
24:08Yes.
24:11Oh, my goodness.
24:16We've got a swan and a heart.
24:18That's Steve's domain.
24:20He just liked the knick-knacking, the titivating and that.
24:23Do you know what I mean?
24:24If that's a word, titivating.
24:25It is a word.
24:27Can I have a look at the bathroom?
24:29Absolutely.
24:30And you've done a veal in the lavatory paper.
24:33That's Steve's finishing touches.
24:36And I see you've got wine.
24:37Is that local wine?
24:39Yeah.
24:40Well, local.
24:41It's the supermarket.
24:42Local.
24:43Okay, so I've just noticed it's not a screw top.
24:47Oh.
24:48So how are they going to get into it?
24:49That's a good point.
24:51Very good.
24:52And the flowers?
24:53Yes, I brought them from home.
24:55I just wanted to...
24:56You didn't think you could just pick some wild ones from the garden?
25:00We didn't know if there'd be flowers or anything, so...
25:02Right, right.
25:03You didn't know the garden was there.
25:04We had to dress it.
25:05Just to give it a bit of a...
25:06Yes.
25:07Because I'm a bit glitzy, isn't it?
25:08Just a bit...
25:09You know what?
25:10Do you know what I mean?
25:11It definitely reflects your personality.
25:16Nicola and Roy have been paired with Hotel Inspector Eva.
25:20This is our lounge area.
25:22Beautiful.
25:23She sets the standard for B&Bs across the UK, and only perfection is acceptable.
25:29The thing I will be looking for is some personality and some thoughts as well, making sure they've
25:34thought about the little details.
25:36We've made these lovely shortbreads for our guests.
25:38Oh, wonderful.
25:39Are they homemade, you said?
25:40They're homemade.
25:41Oh, beautiful.
25:42They were only made about literally an hour ago.
25:44As fresh as can be.
25:45Absolutely.
25:49Have they thought about a bin for the bathroom?
25:51Have they thought about putting maybe a coaster on the desk where I needed?
25:55It's all those little attention to details and little extras that would make the guests
25:59stay comfortable.
26:04This is your room.
26:05Let's take a wee light on.
26:08There you go.
26:09Very good.
26:10So, who was in charge of the cleaning of the room today?
26:12Me.
26:13I like this thing.
26:14Well, if I had done it, Eva, Nicola would have done it again.
26:16Oh.
26:17We like to see some teamwork here, yes.
26:19Is there any aspect in this bedroom which you've introduced to reflect your personality
26:24and your identity?
26:25We've stayed at places where there's lots of ornaments and tat.
26:28We like to keep as minimal as possible, yeah.
26:31Well, I suppose the little touch here is your choice of print for the bedsheets then?
26:36We didn't want anything too bold or anything, and yeah, just nice cotton.
26:40100% cotton.
26:41Yeah, keep cool.
26:42Excellent choice.
26:43We'll be checking the bathroom next.
26:44That's all right.
26:46All right.
26:47No strangers to the challenges of a guest house, Andrew and Brennan are reviewing Jackie
26:56and Rob's preparation.
26:58We've had a little bit of a faux pas in our haste.
27:03I thought I had read somewhere all bedding would be provided, but on the challenge cards
27:10it says...
27:11You have to buy it.
27:12...we have to buy the bedding.
27:13It's one of those things, so we've had to take a deep breath.
27:16Yeah, take a deep breath.
27:17What else can you do?
27:18We're all fallible.
27:19We are.
27:20Yes.
27:21My top tip would be plan ahead.
27:26Always be ahead of the game.
27:28Have a solution lined up for something that could go wrong.
27:32In here is the master bedroom.
27:38It's my fault as much as yours.
27:40We've both read the cards and both misread it.
27:43Tell us in the room what you've brought.
27:46We've brought from home the cushion on the chair and the vase and the flowers.
27:50And I'm guessing that's the en suite.
27:52That's the en suite?
27:53This is the en suite, yes.
27:55A nice contemporary...
27:58The items that are in here we have bought today.
28:01Excellent.
28:02We purchased the bin, we purchased the toilet roll holder, the diffuser.
28:06Very good.
28:07So we thought it was just a nice touch.
28:11Mind your heads.
28:15With the tour over, the scrutiny begins.
28:18We'll leave you to it now.
28:21Thank you very much.
28:24And no stone is left unturned.
28:26I see that they've thought about the toilet brush here.
28:29However, there's no bin in the bathroom, which will be something that guests will pick up on.
28:33A little bit of dust on the rain shower head too.
28:36With a life-changing prize up for grabs, the judges are pulling no punches.
28:41What I did like was she has done the stuff that reflects her.
28:47And that's sort of authentic.
28:50I could probably do without the swan.
28:52The swan that didn't really look like a swan.
28:55Well, it's not up my street, but you know, they were having fun.
29:00There was a little bit of taradiddle, if you call it that.
29:07Bless Jack and Rob.
29:08They didn't read the rules.
29:10Their enthusiasm is what's going to drive them forward.
29:13Because they did drop the ball pretty, pretty, pretty badly.
29:17Nobody's perfect.
29:18Yeah.
29:19Well.
29:20Nobody's perfect.
29:25Do you know what?
29:26We've done his best.
29:27That's all we can say now.
29:28Yeah.
29:29I feel I've messed up all right now.
29:30It's all right.
29:31Yeah, but there's no bin in the bathroom.
29:33What the heck?
29:35Honesty is the best policy.
29:37If we don't have a resolution before your guests arrive,
29:40then let's be honest with them and let's find a way forward.
29:43Yeah, absolutely.
29:45Now the competition is about to heat up,
29:48as the hosts face their biggest test so far.
29:54Because the next knock on the door will be their very first guests.
29:58And if that's not enough pressure, they won't be alone.
30:01So we will be following you with your guests in tow,
30:07but we are flies on the wall.
30:09OK.
30:10You cannot refer to us.
30:11You cannot defer to us.
30:12No, it's all good.
30:13They're not in.
30:14They're not in.
30:17The initial welcome is very, very important.
30:20I think within that first two minutes,
30:22the guests have kind of made up their mind
30:24whether they're going to like it or not.
30:26And I can honestly say, even to this day,
30:29we both still jump when the door knocks,
30:31even though we know they're coming.
30:39Hello.
30:40Welcome.
30:41Hello.
30:42Yes.
30:43Welcome to our beautiful.
30:44Isn't it amazing?
30:46You are very lucky, aren't you, really?
30:49Right, would you like to come in?
30:51In this challenge,
30:52the spotlight is on which hosts will go the extra mile.
30:56Wow.
30:57So, look at this.
30:58When the sun is shining,
31:00you've got the grapevines there,
31:02and the pool.
31:04They have a beautiful pool.
31:06Wow.
31:07Michelle and Steve are hosting Australian holidaymakers
31:10Sam and Alex.
31:12Wait till you see your little bits.
31:14Are you excited?
31:15I'm excited for you.
31:16Right, come on then.
31:17Beautiful.
31:18Look at the view.
31:19So you've got some water,
31:20you've got some wine,
31:21you've got some little cookies.
31:22Beautiful.
31:23This is Steve's artwork.
31:24Have you spent some time on a cruise ship?
31:25Yes.
31:26Yes.
31:27Yes.
31:28Yes.
31:29Is the wine local?
31:30It is, yes.
31:31Oh, wow.
31:32So you can have a look behind you.
31:33Go and have a look in there.
31:34That's your shower room.
31:35Yeah.
31:36Oh, you guys have gone all out.
31:37This is beautiful.
31:39Oh, thank you.
31:40And if there's anything,
31:41you need anything,
31:42just come to the house,
31:43the button.
31:44Yeah.
31:45Yeah.
31:46Yeah.
31:47Yeah.
31:48Yeah.
31:49Yeah.
31:50Yeah.
31:51Yeah.
31:52Yeah.
31:53Yeah.
31:54Yeah.
31:55Yeah.
31:56Yeah.
31:57Yeah.
31:58Yeah.
31:59Yeah.
32:00Yeah.
32:01Yeah.
32:02Coming to the house,
32:03the back door section is always open.
32:05Steve might even do you a little bit of magic.
32:08Oh, really?
32:10Really?
32:13Nicola and Roy are welcoming guests,
32:15Alison and Janine.
32:18Hello.
32:19Hello.
32:20Hello.
32:21Do you want to come for you into the house?
32:23They've got big muscles.
32:24Yeah.
32:25Oh, good.
32:26Good job.
32:27You need them.
32:28I just fired a travel today?
32:30Well, just spent the last week in Italy.
32:32Oh, lovely.
32:33So we're a little bit...
32:34You'll sleep well tonight.
32:37So would you like to see your room?
32:38Absolutely.
32:39OK, let's go.
32:41Did you bring your family?
32:44That's my mum in there.
32:49Now, here's your room.
32:53What we'll do is we'll bring your bags in, let you just get settled.
32:56Yep.
32:56Come down to us any time.
32:58Yep.
32:58There's freshly made shortbreads, tea, coffee.
33:01That sounds good.
33:02Yeah?
33:02Yeah.
33:02We'll let you settle in.
33:03That's a good time for two big beds, that as well, isn't it?
33:05It's not bad, though.
33:06Yeah.
33:11Joe and Karen have an overnight stay with Jackie and Rob.
33:15If you just mind your heads as you go up...
33:18No, I'll see you.
33:20Andrew and Brennan have a close eye
33:22on how the hosts handle a stressful situation.
33:25One little thing I'm going to do is...
33:29Yeah?
33:30We've just had a little bit of a faux pas today.
33:32Bit of drama with the bed sheets.
33:35The linen weren't clean properly, so I'm going to now go out and buy some.
33:38OK.
33:38While I'm out, would you care for a drink or anything?
33:42A cup of tea?
33:43Yeah, I don't drink tea or coffee.
33:45No problem at all.
33:46What do you like to drink?
33:48What do you like to drink?
33:48Herbie.
33:50Herbie, please.
33:51Anything for tea?
33:52A mint tea?
33:52No, it doesn't matter.
33:53Just a...
33:54Yeah.
33:54A mint tea?
33:55Anything long as it's...
33:56No, no, a tea tea.
33:57Yeah, that's right.
33:58No problem at all.
33:59We've got mint tea.
34:01That's fantastic.
34:01And we've got green tea, and we've got berry tea.
34:04Mint.
34:05That'd be fine.
34:06OK, brilliant.
34:06A hot water with lemon, if you like, as well.
34:10Or choices.
34:11There's lots of choices.
34:12I'm getting a headache now.
34:13Yeah, that's it, that's it.
34:14I mean, if you want to...
34:16I'm sorry, you're welcome to just settle yourself in real quickly.
34:19Thank you very much.
34:20Thank you very much.
34:21Thanks for the welcome.
34:22Thanks for the welcome.
34:22Yes, all right.
34:25The check-in is complete.
34:30See you later.
34:30And with the hosts out of earshot...
34:34Gosh.
34:35..the real feedback begins.
34:38What do you think of the bars?
34:39It's definitely got flair.
34:44Oh, oh!
34:56Day one of the competition,
34:58and three couples are going all out
35:00to prove they have what it takes
35:01to win their own B&B.
35:05Would you mind if I had a Yorkshire tea?
35:06No, no, no.
35:07There's my bag of Yorkshire tea.
35:09I love your stuff.
35:10And I promise, I promise it is just tea.
35:13First guests through the door,
35:15and the pressure is on.
35:18Right.
35:18100%.
35:19Cotton?
35:19I think it's really important to have good bedding.
35:21Yeah, it's very important.
35:22It's really important to have good bedding.
35:23So, yeah, yeah, they've done a good job there.
35:26Nicola and Roy's guests, Alison and Janine,
35:28are frequent travellers who don't leave comfort to chance.
35:33There it is.
35:34All size copper.
35:36Two metres long.
35:37Don't open it yet.
35:38You might be very comfortable.
35:39You never know.
35:40We always travel with our own pillow.
35:43There's probably nothing wrong with their pillows,
35:45but I like my own bodily fluids on my pillow
35:48and no one else's.
35:49Look under a hotel pillow.
35:50They're often quite stained.
35:52Yeah.
35:52But they do look lovely and clean.
35:55Oh, I think everything went well.
35:57She's probably a mattress topper.
35:58I mean, it does out everywhere.
35:59OK.
36:00It does out everywhere.
36:01Do you know something?
36:02I take my hat off to people like that.
36:04I wouldn't have the space in my suitcase.
36:09That's good for one.
36:10They actually seem like they're good fun, actually.
36:14Yeah, and they seem quite competent.
36:15Yeah.
36:16I'll look forward to having a drink with them later, I think.
36:18Yeah.
36:18And a bit of shortbread.
36:25Oh, it's quite a sweet shower, Karen.
36:28Yeah, lovely.
36:29Yeah, yeah.
36:30Good standing room in there.
36:32Jackie and Rob are trying to resolve their first problem as hosts
36:36after an oversight has left their guests, Joe and Karen,
36:40without bad linen.
36:42Guys, can I just ask, what's your plan now
36:45as we've gone to the guests?
36:47We'll take the drinks up to them,
36:48and then, as I say, then I can...
36:50No, I don't think we...
36:51Are we going to take the drinks to their rooms?
36:53We're just going to leave it downstairs.
36:54So you need to move those guests as quickly as possible?
36:57Yes, yeah.
36:59So you can get in and dress it.
37:03Can you go out?
37:04Oh, I thought you said you were going out.
37:05No, can you go out?
37:10Come in, come in.
37:11Hello, Karen, Joe.
37:12Just to let you know, your drinks are downstairs in the lounge for you
37:14when you'd like to come down.
37:16Thanks very much.
37:16Just one of your kids when you come down the stairs.
37:21Oh, this is nice.
37:23Take a seat.
37:25Have a moment to refresh.
37:26Yes, yes.
37:27And then I'll be back in in a moment.
37:29Enjoy.
37:30Yeah, thank you.
37:31And then, once you've had your drinks,
37:33then I can show you around if you like.
37:35Please, please.
37:36I'd love to see it, yeah.
37:37No problem at all.
37:38Yeah.
37:38If there's anything else you'd like, just let me know.
37:40Cheers.
37:41Pretty clean.
37:49Shower's always a big thing for me.
37:51I hate a dirty shower, but it looks really good.
37:54As a pilot, Alex has travelled the world
37:57and, along with his partner Sam, is used to premium stays.
38:02They seem like lovely hosts.
38:04I probably would have, you know, met with, like, a welcome drink
38:07or something, but they seem like really lovely,
38:10welcoming people.
38:11For sure.
38:12Maybe tried a little bit too hard.
38:15I've been wanting to try some of the local wine,
38:17but I don't really know what they make here, but...
38:19No, we might have to ask.
38:21Well, that's a rosé, so that would normally be chilled, wouldn't it?
38:24Yeah.
38:24The rosé you'd chill.
38:26But, no, I'd like to try that.
38:28But that's Bergerac, so that's not far away.
38:31She did ask me a question about the wine.
38:33Is it local?
38:34I said it was local.
38:36From the local supermarket, you said.
38:38But I said it's local.
38:40Yeah.
38:40That's what I said, but I blugged it.
38:42So, what do you think of the towels?
38:44If there was rose petals, you would have seen me walking out the door.
38:46Yeah, I know.
38:47I know.
38:48But, look, probably not my thing,
38:51but they seem so keen of what they've done.
38:54They've done a lot of work.
38:55They've put a lot of effort into it, so it's lovely to see.
38:59And they seem like a really lovely couple.
39:01They are.
39:01Yeah.
39:05Six hours ago, none of these couples had hosted a guest house before.
39:10It's been a stressy day.
39:11It's been an emotional day.
39:14I'm just glad it's on my way.
39:17It's been a baptism of fire.
39:20She's okay, and also I need you to look for pillows.
39:22Right.
39:24Take your time.
39:25Take your time, hurry up.
39:26Hurry up.
39:26I love you.
39:27They've given everything they have.
39:31There we go, folks.
39:33Oh, lovely.
39:34Tea?
39:35Yes, please.
39:36New Yorkshire tea?
39:38Absolutely.
39:42But only the judges decide who has made the strongest start.
39:47As day one draws to a close, it's time for the judges' HQ.
39:52Well, guys, we have had the most exciting, very interesting day.
39:58I'm wondering if we shouldn't be particularly harsh in our judgment, because if they don't
40:05get better than they were today, then they don't deserve to win such an incredible prize.
40:11Such a big prize.
40:12Nicola, tell us about your people.
40:13I had Michelle and Steve, who were extremely warm, welcoming, lovely.
40:21When they opened the door to me, it was almost like being greeted by two Springer Spaniels.
40:28It was just full on.
40:31That was lovely for me, because I rather like Springer Spaniels.
40:35But I think if you were a little bit shyer, or more withdrawn, it might have been a bit
40:42full on.
40:43But they were so warm and natural.
40:47So beautiful.
40:50Steve, have you done a runner?
40:53Where is it?
40:54That's me!
40:55Of all of the people that we've met, I think she's the least nervous of the lot.
41:00No, I think you're right.
41:01Because I think she's absolutely confident in who she is.
41:04And that's really refreshing, to be honest, because...
41:06It was refreshing.
41:09The bedroom, they had done a swan towel and a heart towel on the bed.
41:15I think what I would like to say is I don't believe the towels should be on the bed.
41:20Agreed.
41:20Right.
41:21So they shouldn't be sculpted into a swan and a heart on the bed.
41:24Well, while I appreciate the art, the skill, you know, I think there's an issue with hygiene
41:30here, because there's a lot of touching of that towel to fold it as well.
41:35Some guests might find that problematic.
41:38Eva, tell us about your hosts.
41:40So I had Nicola and Roy, who are both wonderful, and just gave a really strong impression.
41:47Don't worry, I'll sing for you.
41:49No, thanks.
41:50Not one.
41:50It's not raining yet.
41:51You've got a piano.
41:51In terms of the setup of the house, I found that the house was really clean.
41:57On closer inspection, I did find a couple minor lapses, some dust on top of the rain shower
42:02head, for instance, and a couple of watermarks on the chrome.
42:05In the bathroom, there were a couple of missing items as well, some quite important ones, so
42:10there wasn't any bin.
42:11So in terms of the ease of use, there are similar elements.
42:14There's room for improvement.
42:16But they really complemented each other, and I think one of their strengths is going to
42:20be, you know, the teamwork aspect.
42:23How are you feeling now, love?
42:25Sick.
42:25We had a really odd faux pas.
42:30Our hosts, Jackie and Rob, didn't realise that they had to actually buy and supply the
42:37bedsheets.
42:38They misread the rules, and they were devastated.
42:41I mean, absolutely devastated.
42:41So how did they deal with that, then?
42:43They were flustered.
42:44They were seriously flustered.
42:47Is it poppers?
42:49Oh, yes.
42:51The guests were very, very gracious, but our biggest issue was that they left them in the
42:57room with no sheets.
42:59So they weren't invited in the lounge for a cup of tea or anything like that?
43:02They asked if they wanted any refreshments, and then they said, would you like to stay
43:08in the room for a while?
43:09That's where we'd be like, get them out.
43:11We were in the corridor.
43:13Exactly.
43:14They forgot to breathe.
43:16Yeah.
43:16Yeah.
43:16And that was kind of made them go.
43:18So they perhaps weren't relaxed enough.
43:20And in fairness, they've only had six hours.
43:23Yes, but everyone has had six hours.
43:25Yeah.
43:26So we have to bear that in mind as well.
43:31The hosts have made their first impressions on the judges, but all is still to play for.
43:37Day one has brought challenges, but we've managed to overcome those challenges.
43:44Well done, you.
43:46Come on.
43:49That was Sunday, bye.
43:51I hope that was hardest challenge.
43:54I'll tell you now, I don't think it was for you.
43:56I think there's more to come.
43:59Tomorrow will bring a fresh challenge as the hosts have put through their paces once again.
44:04Each step edging them closer to a life-changing prize.
44:09I'm really excited to see where this goes next, because if we're able to judge this much so early, just imagine what levels they can achieve.
44:21It's going to be an exciting week.
44:23It is.
44:23And what better company to do it with?
44:26Oh.
44:27We got it.
44:31Next time.
44:32This is a lazy man's way of making home this.
44:35The B&B battle moves to breakfast.
44:37What's that, Steve?
44:38Is it a rose?
44:39Yes.
44:40Crunch toast?
44:41It's a bit too runny.
44:43And a curveball challenge.
44:45Dad.
44:46What?
44:46We've got a guest arriving early.
44:48That's lovely.
44:49But it's the hosts to the test.
44:51No.
44:52Shh.
44:53Unfortunately, I forgot the do-bag covers.
44:55This is one of our welcome gifts.
44:57You look like a castrated cat.
44:58Ha ha ha ha.
45:19You look like a castrated cat.
45:19You look like a castrated cat.
45:20You look like a castrated cat.

45:39You look like a castrated cat.
