00:00Oh, look at that!
00:02Oh, look at that!
00:04Absolutely phenomenal!
00:06Rooney Alcott!
00:08Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:30Hello, two games on tonight's Match of the Day.
00:52Arsenal faced Tottenham in the North London derby,
00:55followed by in-form Aston Villa's visit to Leeds.
00:58Joe Hart and Danny Murphy are revved up and ready to go.
01:01So, to the Emirates.
01:03The league leaders, Arsenal, looking to get back to winning ways
01:05after Sunderland interrupted a run of ten victories last time out,
01:09while Spurs were desperate to keep their unbeaten away form intact.
01:13I think Tottenham Arsenal has always been an exciting game.
01:23It's a big, big game and I do like the big games, you know.
01:26It's Emmanuel Petit for Arsenal and that is a fantastic goal.
01:29Garfield!
01:31Of course, you know, we want to win now.
01:37We'll push our teams to play football and not to make war.
01:41Oh, what a try!
01:43David Bentley against his old club!
01:46And a Bayern!
01:47And a Bayern!
01:48And a Bayern!
01:49What a goal!
01:50That's an incredible strike by Harry Kane!
01:54Saka makes it three!
01:56Tottenham running riot against Arsenal!
01:59Trosson!
02:00Trosson!
02:04Steve Wilson was at the Emirates.
02:08Sometimes in the long history of this fixture, there have been games
02:11which signified much more than just being North London's top dog
02:15and this feels like one of them.
02:17Results of Anfield and St James' have given Arsenal an extraordinary opportunity
02:22to exert a grip on the title race.
02:24An opportunity which Spurs would dearly love to deny them.
02:29No Gabriel for the Gunners in Cappier deputises.
02:32He's been good, but he's not Gabriel.
02:34Calafiore is fit, Jokeres is not.
02:37Tottenham are the only side with an unbeaten away record in the Premier League.
02:41Five changes from Thomas Frank today and a change of formation.
02:45In come Danso, Udoggi, Bentancur, Odober and Kudas.
02:53Arsenal's current 21-year wait to be champions
02:56is the longest since they won their first title in 1931.
03:00Is this their year?
03:02This is Saka for Arsenal.
03:05Eze in a good position and Rice!
03:11Eze in that number ten position delightfully into Rice and he really hit it well.
03:20Gabriel watching on and he will be for some weeks.
03:23That's not where they want him to be.
03:25And Cappier caught by Kudas.
03:28Play will go on.
03:29Declan Rice to Leandro Trossard.
03:30A bit deep looking that from Trossard, but Saka's caressed it beautifully.
03:34And Udoggi does foul him.
03:36It is a free kick to Arsenal.
03:37Michael Oliver's trying to let things go.
03:40Brilliant touch from Saka here.
03:41And then Udoggi was all over him.
03:43Michael Oliver blew up in the end.
03:45Well, 20 Premier League goals scored this season, Arsenal.
03:46Ten of them from set pieces.
03:47Not counting penalty kicks.
03:48Saka with more than enough ability to put this right on the money.
03:50And it's heading towards the top corner.
04:03And ruffled the top of the net in the end.
04:16And ruffled the top of the net in the end.
04:20Huge week for Arsenal.
04:23Tottenham followed by Bayern Munich and then a trip to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea
04:28who just may be their main challengers for the title, who knows.
04:33Marino into Saka.
04:36Beautifully done.
04:37He's knocked over by Benton Coeur and the car's coming out here.
04:42He'd nutmeged Van de Ven quite beautifully.
04:46And Rodrigo Benton Coeur made sure he was going no further.
04:5333 played.
04:57Saka's free kick and pushed away by Vicario.
05:02A save you would expect him to make.
05:06It's a decent save and he's probably seen it slightly late.
05:10But he'd be disappointed not to keep that out.
05:12Into the last ten minutes of an absorbing first half.
05:19There's a little bit of room here.
05:21Here come Marino.
05:23Oh, great run by Trossard.
05:25Trossard on the turn.
05:26It's in.
05:32Arsenal breakthrough.
05:32Leandro Trossard.
05:39It's a brilliant run and he's beautifully found.
05:43And it's a pretty tidy finish too.
05:45He kept calm.
05:47Kept his balance.
05:48And delivers Arsenal the lead.
05:50It's a funny looking deflection in there having said that.
05:54Beautiful ball by Marino.
05:55As he turns and swivels here.
06:00It's come off Van de Ven.
06:03Into the back of the net.
06:04Well, the shot being on target, Trossard will be credited with the goal.
06:14Nicely done.
06:16Timber whipped in.
06:17Danse away.
06:18Room for Rice.
06:19Quickly moving it to Ezek.
06:21Wriggling on.
06:222-0.
06:27Two inside five minutes for Arsenal.
06:31And you can't help but feel that scoring in a North London derby has been a dream for Iberia Ezek.
06:39Since he was a very young man.
06:41Now what he always wanted to be.
06:48An Arsenal hero.
06:50He scores.
06:52Against Tottenham.
06:54And the Gunners have a two goal lead.
06:59Moved it so quickly into Eze Rice.
07:03And he showed great composure.
07:06Vicario got a hand to it.
07:07Couldn't keep it out.
07:08There is a VAR check here for a possible offside.
07:15But neither were impeding the view of Vicario.
07:19In the opinion of Stuart Atwell.
07:21The goal stands.
07:23Arsenal 2.
07:25Tottenham XB nil.
07:28Given Danse off.
07:30Shelby Simons on.
07:32Back four again for Tottenham.
07:34Tottenham.
07:38Oh look at the space as it has.
07:423-0.
07:46Inside 40 seconds of the second half.
07:51Eberici Ezek in dreamland.
07:55Arsenal three goals up in the North London derby.
07:59They are blowing Tottenham Hotspur away here.
08:04Catch us if you can is the message.
08:09Tottenham are in serious trouble now.
08:13This is a desperate start to the second half for them.
08:16But such a composed finish from Ezek.
08:21The gap is wide.
08:22And inviting.
08:24And the clip shot into the corner of Vicario's net.
08:30There have only ever been three hat-tricks scored in North London derbies.
08:35Ezek is a goal away.
08:37Good challenge in Jaupalina by Mikel Moreno.
08:44Saka was bundled over but Arsenal have the ball, have the initiative, have the advantage.
08:49Rice to Trosso.
08:50Ezek is in the middle.
08:52And that little touch from Romero just might have denied him a hat-trick.
08:57Mikel Moreno.
08:59Romero again.
09:00Zubimendi.
09:01Great block Romero.
09:02And the offside flag has gone up.
09:07You've got to credit the Tottenham skipper here.
09:10Arsenal look like they could score almost at will.
09:15But this game has surely gone.
09:18Silver face.
09:19Not saving the game is what they're talking about.
09:27Great challenge now, Polina Richarlison looking to lob David Raya.
09:31And he has.
09:34A piece of impudence and brilliance from Richarlison.
09:39With a big thank you to Jaupalina who won it brilliantly here from Zubimendi.
09:44But that's fantastic from Richarlison.
09:47And that's Arsenal 3, Tottenham 1.
09:49And Tottenham Hotspur are on the scoreboard.
09:57And it's something.
09:59I believe it was their first attempt of the game.
10:02And as an attempt go, it was a very, very good one.
10:05Vicario always had its measure.
10:17But he treated it with the respect it was due.
10:20Vicario's forward ball.
10:33Commanding header by Capia.
10:35Here's Marino nicely around the corner.
10:37Leandro Trossard.
10:39And space for Iberic.
10:40Eze!
10:41Brilliant!
10:44Only the fourth hat-trick ever in North London derby history.
10:49And the first since Alan Sunderland in 1978.
10:55Dreams come true for Iberici Eze.
10:59What a day for Eze.
11:07Great composure again.
11:09Look how he allows that ball to just roll across Udoggi.
11:16Arsenal 4.
11:18Tottenham Hotspur 1.
11:20It's his day.
11:22It's Arsenal's day.
11:25To say it's been easy would be unfair on Tottenham.
11:28But it's certainly been Eze.
11:35Pandoven and he's lost it.
11:38And it could be a fourth.
11:41Great save Vicario to deny Eze.
11:47He shakes his head.
11:48He knows too close to Vicario.
11:52It really should have been his fourth.
11:53That is the sound of the Emirates in ecstasy for Iberici Eze.
12:04Right now Arsenal have the look of champions elect.
12:08They look unstoppable.
12:09And Tottenham were no match for them today.
12:12Eze with three.
12:14Arsenal four.
12:15Tottenham one.
12:16It's only the fourth hat-trick ever in North London derby history.
12:21I know.
12:21I just heard.
12:22So that tells you about the difficulty and what he's done today.
12:25And to be fair he could have scored four or five.
12:27You know.
12:27But that's the play that we need to play to.
12:30In big games.
12:31It creates those magic moments.
12:32Those actions that unbalance the team.
12:35And I thought his all-around play today was excellent.
12:38Special day for me, my family.
12:40And yeah.
12:41Happy to help the team to win today.
12:43The players in the team.
12:44The ability.
12:44The talent.
12:46There's so much.
12:46And from every angle we're threatening to score goals.
12:49So yeah.
12:50It's a good day today.
12:51And a good performance from the team all-around.
12:53I think.
12:53We can only apologize to the fans for not performing better.
12:57I was very confident that we could be very competitive today.
13:03But we weren't.
13:04I take always the full responsibility for performances.
13:07And the biggest thing.
13:08Both halves.
13:09No matter what.
13:10It is.
13:10We don't play aggressive enough.
13:11We don't get close enough.
13:13We don't win enough duels.
13:14Then it doesn't matter what system we play.
13:15Nobody wins a title in November.
13:18Clearly it's much too early.
13:19But.
13:20It does feel like you have an incredible momentum.
13:23Yes.
13:23We have a really good momentum.
13:25But.
13:26You can see how difficult it is to game every game.
13:28In the Premier League.
13:28You see yesterday's results today.
13:30And how teams.
13:31Even when they win.
13:32And how much they have to suffer.
13:33It is a long run.
13:34Let's go game by game.
13:36Enjoy tonight.
13:37Then we have Bayern here.
13:39And then we have Chelsea away.
13:40So.
13:41We have a massive week ahead.
13:42Yeah.
13:43It's a huge week ahead.
13:44But they have capitalized on others faltering this weekend.
13:46And so much of the talk ahead of this North London derby.
13:49Was about those names who weren't there.
13:51And was this going to give Spurs an opportunity?
13:52Well.
13:52There was only one name on everyone's lips at the end of it.
13:55Eberice Eza.
13:57He's a joy to watch.
13:58He's a beautiful footballer.
13:59But I have to say the Arsenal team performance was incredible.
14:03They were better than Spurs.
14:05Physically.
14:05Technically.
14:06Tactically.
14:07And the most worrying thing for Spurs was that Arsenal wanted it more.
14:12They really did.
14:12They wanted it more.
14:13Which is unacceptable from Spurs' point of view.
14:16But getting back to Eza.
14:18I mean.
14:19His best performance in an Arsenal shirt.
14:22He showed all aspects of his game and his play.
14:25He's got this wonderful knack of making the game look easy.
14:28And finding space so effortlessly.
14:30Here he doesn't even see Rice till late.
14:32Still manages to find him with that beautiful little flick and creativity.
14:36This is why they brought him in.
14:37To unlock defences.
14:39That sit deep and put numbers behind.
14:41Talking about the team performance.
14:43Timber there.
14:43You need runners when you've got a packed defence.
14:46Timber was exceptional today.
14:47But Zubamendi there is the central defensive midfielder.
14:50He's ahead of Eza.
14:51And every time someone runs past him.
14:53He just drops into that little space that's vacated.
14:56Great feat on the edge of the box to skip through there.
14:59And get a little bit of luck with the deflection.
15:01But still a good finish.
15:02More of the same in the second half.
15:03See how he just drops into the space when Rice penetrates.
15:08And when he gets the ball.
15:09It doesn't matter with him right or left foot.
15:11It's elegant.
15:11It's composed.
15:13There's one thing you have to do if you play for Arteta.
15:16And that's defend.
15:16They carry nobody.
15:18And if you don't do it.
15:19You don't play.
15:20Now they've got the competition for places and squad depth.
15:23And look at this for a turn of pace as well.
15:24I mean Koudis is no slouch.
15:27And not only does he get back and help his team.
15:30Probably doesn't want this back from the keeper actually.
15:32But when he gets it.
15:33A little bit more composure around the corner.
15:35And he was growing all the time.
15:37And the fans adore him already.
15:40When he gets in this position again.
15:43Just patient.
15:44Takes his time.
15:45Picks his spot.
15:47He's the type of player now that Arsenal can rely on.
15:51He's confident.
15:53He's a game changer.
15:55He's a wow footballer.
15:56That's what I call him.
15:57I mean.
15:57Could have had four or five.
15:58Arteta's right.
16:00And that you can't.
16:01Whoever you support.
16:02You can't help but like him and enjoy his football.
16:05You'd have to have a heart of stone wouldn't you.
16:07And there is stats are speaking for themselves aren't they.
16:09The top English player on that list in terms of goals involvement in 2025.
16:13But his story is so inspiring.
16:16Let go by Arsenal at 13 years old.
16:18And then finding his way through Millwall, QPR, Crystal Palace to come back to the club that he left as a kid.
16:24And do what he did in a North London derby today is just extraordinary.
16:29Well it is inspiration like you say.
16:30Resilience.
16:31Self-belief.
16:33Just complete single-mindedness and wanting to achieve his goals.
16:37To play for your boyhood team and score in a game of that size is something that will live with him forever.
16:43And he will not be sleeping tonight.
16:45Trust me.
16:45I've been there.
16:46It's an amazing feeling.
16:47The great thing about this now for him.
16:50He's got the fans on side.
16:51That's done.
16:52He's going to go into the next few games with no fear of anything.
16:55He's going to express himself and use his skill and show the world how good he is.
16:58You saw his belief in that tweet that he put out when he was 15, 16 years old.
17:03When obviously those around him he felt were doubting him.
17:05But he never doubted his innate ability.
17:07It takes a lot of self-belief to go through the things that he's been through.
17:11But he knows.
17:12He knows what a talent he is.
17:13And he knew he could feel that the whole way through football.
17:15And he was just looking to find his place.
17:17He certainly looks like he's found it.
17:19OK.
17:19On to a slightly drier, kind of less glitzy part of the game today.
17:23Because the second goal Spurs fans would feel maybe a little bit aggrieved by.
17:28It was awarded and was judged not to have contravened the interference rule.
17:33Now this has been applied inconsistently, some might say, over the last few weeks.
17:37We've seen different examples of where goals have been overturned or goals have been given.
17:40And yet things appear to be similar or the same.
17:43Should we remind ourselves of the rule and the examples that we've had lately, Joe?
17:47And you can tell us why you think this could be cleared up quite simply.
17:51Yeah.
17:51Last two game weeks it's been front and centre.
17:54No getting away from it.
17:56We see the law there.
17:57Four different things that you've got to understand when you're looking at an offside.
18:01Especially from a goalkeeper's point of view.
18:02OK, so we've got the first example that we had today.
18:09Abreche Eze, Trossard in an offside position.
18:13Then we had Van Dijk two weeks ago at the Etihad.
18:15Roberts in an offside position.
18:17Near we have Murillo and Doi at Anfield yesterday.
18:21OK, so first example.
18:23So Trossard.
18:23So this is the one that I think, this is Vicario's vision.
18:26I think this is preventing an opponent from being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the line of vision.
18:32As it leaves his foot, Trossard is in Vicario's line of vision.
18:36Offside in my opinion.
18:38Goal given.
18:42City and Manchester, different.
18:44As it leaves Van Dijk's head, he's not obstructing Donnarumma's view.
18:49As we roll it on, Andy Robertson here.
18:53Look, he's ducking out of the way.
18:55Does Donnarumma know that?
18:56Could be trying to flick it on, making an obvious action which clearly impacts the ability of an opponent to play the ball.
19:02Questionable, of course it is.
19:03There's holes in it, but if you want to make a case, that's offside.
19:06Murillo at Anfield.
19:08As it leaves his foot, and as Alisson's looking at the ball, is his vision impaired?
19:12No, it's not.
19:13But if we roll it on.
19:15At some moment, Ndoi, who's in an offside position, is preventing an opponent from being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the line of vision.
19:22Again, goal given, in my opinion, you'd have an argument to rule that out.
19:26So, for you, it would just be more consistent to say anything that anybody who's obscuring the vision of the goalkeeper in an offside position?
19:36I think so.
19:37I think that makes it...
19:38Well, that's what the rules are, but they've obviously not taken them because two of those goals were given.
19:43So, it makes it very difficult, and we have these continual conversations, but with VAR, the ability that they've got is to slow it down and pause it, like I have there, and you can point out why the goal should be ruled out.
19:54And a lot of Spurs fans will probably even concede that, actually, had the goal been ruled out, they would have gone 1-0 down instead of 2-0 down at half-time, but they were totally overpowered on every area of the pitch today and would hold their hands up and say that they just didn't have the fight they were looking for in that North London derby.
20:11Well, yeah, the lack of fight, but it's the lack of creativity in the last couple of games, Arsenal and Chelsea at home.
20:16You can see here the XG, top two, lowest in the last two games, and obviously the one at the bottom, three out of the worst eight this season.
20:24Yes, you can hide behind Kulisevski, Maddison, Solanke not being there, but the players they've got in that squad are struggling, really struggling to be brave enough to get on the ball, to make things happen.
20:34I mean, you could argue only Kudos out of all their front players can hold his head up high a little bit and say he's created stuff and had to go.
20:43There's a lot of fear in that side, probably too much pragmatism.
20:48Thomas Frank is obviously new to it, he's working out who he can trust and who he can rely on.
20:54The reality is they've got to pick up soon because the level of performances the last couple of games is causing discontent amongst the fans, for sure.
21:01On the flip side, Arsenal absolutely flying, six points clear at the top of the table in a week where they have Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Chelsea at the end of the week in the league, of course.
21:12It's a huge week, could be a massively pivotal week for them.
21:14Yeah, of course, and obviously with what's going on yesterday, that was incredible.
21:18Liverpool losing, Man City losing, Arsenal getting at home to Tottenham, great performance, momentum's good.
21:23OK, thank you very much.
21:24Aston Villa didn't register a victory until the end of September, but since then, Unai Emery's side have won eight of ten in all competitions.
21:32Today, they travelled to Elland Road. Alistair Mann was there.
21:37Aston Villa's outstanding form is in marked contrast to that of Leeds, whose four defeats in their last five games have seen them fall back into the bottom three.
21:48Daniel Farker says it's certainly not a time to panic, though, and shows the faith in his side by making just one alteration to the line-up which fell at Noddingham Forest two weeks ago.
21:59Pascal Strauch is preferred to Jaka Biol.
22:02Scoring, though, has been an issue.
22:04Just ten registered in their eleven games so far.
22:07The return of Jurid Tielemans for Andre Onana is Villa's only change, and small wonder after their near-perfect display in the 4-0 demolition of Bournemouth last time out.
22:19It's their away form which has let them down.
22:21Only five of their 18 points gathered on their travels.
22:27Leeds have won just one of the last 11 meetings with Aston Villa here at Elland Road, and that was more than 22 years ago.
22:37Leeds have won just one of the last 10 points, and they have the opportunity here to maybe nudge in front from a set-piece.
22:54Arnstaff the orchestrator, a really good ball in actually, gets scooped up into the air, and was it over the line?
23:03It is!
23:07Leeds celebrate, but no-one's quite sure whether this goal is a goal or not.
23:14Well, there's no doubt the ball crosses the line, but is there an offside?
23:18Is there a foul?
23:19In the end, it bounces off Mecha and over the line.
23:23You get the impression that they're not convinced there was a foul on Martinez,
23:26so I think it is the offside that might prevent it being 1-0 Leeds.
23:31I think it's a goal, and I think it's going to be given, and in a moment, there'll be a second eruption inside Elland Road, and there it is.
23:40So Mecha has the goal.
23:43No offside, no foul on the goalkeeper.
23:46Leeds won, Aston Villa nil.
23:48And here's proof of the offside, or onside, depending on where you want to view it.
23:56But Kin's elbow is the guilty party.
24:01Scoring early goals at home is such an important aspect of any team,
24:07but particularly one who have been struggling for points on their travels,
24:12and they're working in amazing games of late.
24:16Thielemans has a go, and there's a claim of a handball,
24:21and the referee has given a free kick.
24:24It's all happening in the opening moments here.
24:28Buendia very focused, but Nicodin has not given this up either.
24:35It is Buendia, it's over the bar.
24:37And yet another huge cheer around Elland Road.
24:43And Dia, and he was never getting that under the crossbar, was he?
24:50Rodgers.
24:55One back, Okafor emerges with it.
24:59Ties to take on Cash, and gets back at him, but concedes the corner.
25:03Sliding challenge, I don't know if Cash gets his hand in the trodden on.
25:09He did, right at the end by Okafor.
25:13Well done again, a menacing present, Strouk is in there too.
25:19Longstaff's delivery, just about cleared.
25:23Aronson, just about saved.
25:26It's a good effort from Aronson, and a smart save.
25:30He's had that scowl on his face for virtually the entire game, Munai Omeri.
25:42Watkins.
25:44Again, he's not going to get there because Rodgers does.
25:48Here's Kamara.
25:50Watkins hits it!
25:51And that is inches beyond the post.
25:56I think the Vela supporters were in the kind of position where they thought it had gone in.
26:00They hadn't.
26:03So, Munai Omeri's dissatisfaction at half-time is apparent with a double change already.
26:09Onkerms Ian Mattson and Daniel Marlan.
26:12Lucadine and Emiliano Guendia have made white.
26:23Here's McGinn.
26:26Now Cash.
26:29Marlan.
26:31It's a dangerous ball, and it's turned in by Rodgers.
26:34And it hasn't taken Aston Villa long to redress the balance.
26:40Marlan hadn't been on the field very long, but he's already made a contribution.
26:45And Rodgers, who darted to the near post, has helped it over the line.
26:50And within moments of the restart, Aston Villa have repaired all the damage that was caused from the first half display.
26:58Marlan darting in, and Rodgers flicking it beyond the goalkeeper.
27:05It's only his second goal of the season, Morgan Rodgers.
27:09But it is a timely walk for Aston Villa.
27:13He made the changes at half-time, and within moments of doing so, his side were level.
27:18And one of those substitutes Marlan involved in crafting the equaliser.
27:25Longstaff intervenes.
27:27Here's Okafor, now Metscher.
27:31Couldn't sort his feet out quickly enough, and it breaks for McGinn.
27:36Tanaka with the challenge.
27:38McGinn rides it.
27:39Rodgers brings it.
27:42Watkins has it.
27:44Watkins, saved by the goalkeeper, spilled by the goalkeeper.
27:48And between he and Stroud, they somehow get it out of harm's way.
27:52There's a smile on Lucas Pérez's face, but it's probably one of relief more than anything else.
27:59And Villa's second goal just seems to be in the air at the moment.
28:05Tielemans in towards the run of Rodgers, and it breaks for Barkley, who's caught right on the edge of the area.
28:16Stroud gets booked.
28:18Free kick to Aston Villa.
28:19A hush descends over Ellen Road as Aston Villa work out who the best player to dispatch this free kick might be.
28:31Rodgers placed it very carefully down.
28:33Sancho is making the case that he should have a crack.
28:38It looks as though Rodgers has won the verbal battle between those who wanted to take it.
28:44A pivotal moment in the game.
28:47Morgan Rodgers, who's already scored this afternoon.
28:52Does so again.
28:54And Aston Villa are in front.
28:56Morgan Rodgers making it look so very easy.
29:00And going over to the Villa supporters at that end of the ground.
29:06Well, he flicked it in at the near post for the equaliser.
29:10He's now just guided it beautifully over the wall to make it 2-1 to Aston Villa.
29:17It's such an unusual way that he hits it.
29:20The ball kind of holds itself in mid-air and plants into the corner of the net.
29:26Morgan Rodgers has single-handedly turned a losing position into a winning one.
29:37Here's Leeds though with James all the way through and gets it in!
29:41Well, the Aston Villa players are all absolutely furious about that.
29:50It was a strange old goal.
29:53James just ran in and dabbed it beyond the goalkeeper.
29:57Was he onside or offside?
30:00It's so tight.
30:02The ball over the top.
30:04James, I think he's just about onside.
30:08And he runs onto it and dabs it beyond Martinez and into the back of the net.
30:14Oh, and might there be a touch off Calvert-Lewin?
30:18Was it a touch of the hand?
30:21VAR checking.
30:23Oh, I think it might be handball against Calvert-Lewin.
30:26I don't think this is going to stand because Calvert-Lewin gets the final touch
30:32and it just strikes his left hand.
30:35It will not count.
30:42Sanchuk, the tackle by Roden.
30:46Now James.
30:50Pirou, James, fouled.
30:53Free kick to Leeds.
30:55There's a little bit of momentum building for Leeds now.
31:02Trying to find an equaliser and prevent a fifth defeat in six.
31:10Strouk, oh, and then just Martinez gets there.
31:16Another good delivery from Longstaff.
31:18Strouk got it.
31:20Martinez saved it.
31:22The final score here at Ellen Road.
31:25Leeds United 1, Aston Villa 2.
31:27The timing of the equaliser was so crucial, wasn't it?
31:32Yes, yes.
31:32It was the key to equaliser the match.
31:34And then we continued.
31:36And we had chances to score the second goal.
31:39We did.
31:39And we considered a few chances.
31:42A few chances.
31:43There were sometimes crossing, but we defend well the box and Emiliano Martírez as well.
31:49And I am so, so happy for the players.
31:51Because the demands, the standards we are trying to set higher as possible in everything, they respond fantastically.
32:00Performance-wise, I was happy.
32:02You can't blame the Leeds at all.
32:03It's more like at the moment you have a period when many things are going against you.
32:07And then it's more like you have to work even harder, more details to gain the momentum back again.
32:13That's what we're doing.
32:14Let's talk about that free kick.
32:15There was a technique that you used there.
32:17Describe it if you can.
32:18I call it the Emi Buendia.
32:20He did it, obviously, the last game before the break.
32:23It's something I've been practising on.
32:24Probably not as hard as him.
32:25Maybe not as much as I should.
32:26But once he was off the pitch and I looked around and there was no one else really that practised him, I thought, why not?
32:32I know I've got it in the locker.
32:33It's just about consistency.
32:35And I'm really happy that that one went in.
32:37Yeah, it was fantastic.
32:38But is it the Emi Buendia free kick?
32:41Well, my experience of that technique was Gareth Bale.
32:43And it used to frustrate me when I was at Tottenham.
32:46And why he was kicking it so softly, with so much movement.
32:50And I wasn't able to move because I couldn't pick up the line.
32:54So when I saw that today, I was so, so impressed.
32:56Like I say, that's the Emi Buendia to Morgan Rodgers.
32:58But to me, it was the Gareth Bale.
33:00He was telling me to use, almost use your ankle.
33:03So hopefully later in the piece when I show you what he means by that.
33:07But it's quite a confusing technique.
33:08But it's such a special technique if you get it right.
33:14And here we are.
33:15This is versus Bournemouth.
33:16This is Buendia.
33:16And, like, I've got to clear up why this technique is leaving.
33:20Premier League top goalkeepers stood there just watching the ball go in.
33:24It's so frustrating.
33:25And I know exactly how they feel.
33:27This was today.
33:28This is their 20-yard free kick.
33:29Buendia.
33:30I've got the miles per hour up there because these boys are capable of hitting 70, 80-mile-an-hour shots.
33:35And the fans on the side are probably thinking, whip it goalkeeper's side.
33:37Whip it goalkeeper's side.
33:39Here, first ever free kick in the Premier League, by the way.
33:4247 miles an hour.
33:43To have the confidence and step up and do it.
33:46Right.
33:46So, what I'm going to talk you through is the technique we've known for years.
33:48Almost the David Beckham technique.
33:50We spend standing almost two, three yards to the left, ready to approach the ball.
33:55And when you see someone with that technique approaching from two, three yards to the left, as we see it, there's only one style of free kick.
34:01It's the right to left.
34:02If you're a golfer, the draw.
34:04But what we see here with Morgan Rodgers approaching it from straight, that already makes it difficult for Perry.
34:11As he steps up, uses that technique I've talked about with Gareth Bale.
34:14It almost looks like he's just hit below the ankle.
34:17Usually, you want to be using much higher up the foot.
34:20And his technique, he's just looking to softly get it up and over the wall.
34:23It makes it very difficult.
34:25And then leaves Perry stood there.
34:27And I'm going to tell you why.
34:28Here we go.
34:29This is it.
34:29So, here we are.
34:31Eight foot ten.
34:32The goal's eight foot high.
34:34Ten inches above the bar when it goes over the wall.
34:36And he has no idea of the trajectory, Perry, when he sees it.
34:39So, this is the time frame.
34:40He's got to make a decision, move and save it.
34:43And a millisecond later, it's five foot above the goal line.
34:47Unbelievable movement, unbelievable dippage, as you would say.
34:51And as we move on to our third example, which is the teller of why he's just stood there.
34:55Like I say, Ellen Rode, everyone's looking and going, why has he just stood there?
34:59So, as the ball leaves Morgan Rodgers' foot, it just threatens to swerve left.
35:03That right to left that I was talking about earlier.
35:07It leaves his foot and then just dips the other way.
35:10And this is the moment Perry's set for that ball to come towards him.
35:13Calculations in his head, try and get his foot moving.
35:16And in the end, he's stuck in the mud, can't move.
35:19Morgan Rodgers, over to McPhee, big high five.
35:22And they absolutely delight because they've given him the confidence to do that.
35:25They've worked on that and they believed he could.
35:27There is something of the sand wedge about it, isn't there?
35:29In the kind of trajectory and how it comes down again.
35:32Do you know what?
35:32I'll tell you this because I've practiced that many times.
35:35It's a very difficult technique and there's not that many players who can do it.
35:38I mean, you need a certain type of posture with your feet.
35:41A certain kind of feet because the flexibility...
35:43Yeah, call it like 10 to 2, 10 past 2, if you like.
35:4610 to 2, sorry.
35:48Rather than, you know, more 12 o'clock feet where you can't open to get the groins.
35:52I know that sounds a bit weird, but I remember...
35:54It was just the 10 past 2 feet that I had in my head.
35:56Yeah, 10 to 2, sorry.
35:57The first time I ever was with England, I was lucky enough to be called over
36:02to practice free kicks with Beckham.
36:04And he had this wonderful flexibility within his legs, his feet, his groins
36:09to be able to get that amazing whip, which nobody else could quite copy
36:13because of the way he set up.
36:15Physiologically, he was set up ready for it.
36:16Right, let's talk about the second half of Villa.
36:18We've seen this a couple of times where, obviously, you and I, Emery,
36:21he was itching to get in and make a few tweaks and a few changes
36:24because Leeds had had a really good first half.
36:26Leeds were terrific first half and a lot for them to be pleased about
36:30in that respect, but he brought Marlon on to play high up with Watkins
36:33instead of the first half where Rodgers played as a 10 behind Watkins
36:37when Diaz was on the left.
36:38So he brought Marlon on to occupy the two centre-halves to stretch the game
36:42and try and get behind Leeds, which they didn't manage in the first half.
36:45What that also did is it left a space for Rodgers to come in when he could
36:48off the left-hand side, and this is how they got the first goal.
36:51It's a brilliant impact substitution.
36:54We know Marlon's quick.
36:55We know he wants to run in behind, and we know he's had a couple of good games recently.
36:58He probably feels a little bit disappointed he's not starting with Watkins.
37:01But, look, both wanting to run that way.
37:04They didn't... Watkins was isolated in the first half on his own.
37:07Two centre-halves against him.
37:08It was more difficult.
37:10And then when they get out and they beat the press, look,
37:13there's the pace.
37:14There's the options.
37:15And all of a sudden, it's game on.
37:17They're finding themselves getting into the Leeds' final third more often.
37:22This time it's Watkins with the shot.
37:25It really was a clever bit of management from Emery because he needed to do something.
37:30They were flat.
37:31Leeds were comfortable.
37:32And this is a player who wants to impress.
37:34I love it when subs come on and try and impact the game.
37:36He's beating people.
37:37He's dynamic.
37:38He's making things happen.
37:39And this is a great example.
37:40Look, when you play two centre-forwards,
37:42they're both in between the full-back and the centre-half.
37:45Really difficult to play against.
37:48And then the wide men get more space, get more time to come inside
37:51and McGinn there unlucky with the shot.
37:54And he probably deserved a goal for his efforts in the second half, Marlon.
37:59But he just scuffs this one.
38:00But it was a really good substitution and a small tweak, but a very important one.
38:05I do have to say, though, Leeds' second half,
38:07even though they went 2-1 down,
38:08they really were resilient, came back into the game
38:11and were unlucky not to get something out of it.
38:14The attitude on the pitch, the fight that they had today,
38:17would seem to see a relationship between the manager
38:20and the players, certainly, that looks good.
38:23But in terms of the fans, there was a lot of disquiet in the crowd
38:25and a fan actually managed to get himself right in front of the Leeds dugout
38:29and was protesting and got taken away.
38:31There were a lot of noises at the end of the game
38:33that seemed to say they may be losing a bit of faith in Daniel Farker.
38:37Yeah, well, it's another loss and they're on a bad run.
38:40I think after their recent performances at Brighton away,
38:43where they lost heavily and they lost at Burnley,
38:46I think there was a lot of discontent.
38:48That performance today was a good reaction, even though they lost.
38:51They didn't deserve to lose the game over the 90 minutes.
38:53Yeah.
38:53But Leeds are an expectant crowd.
38:56The problem is for Leeds, we talked about Tottenham earlier,
38:58Leeds are struggling to score goals.
39:00They've got a very tough run coming up as well, haven't they?
39:03Lost five in six and home is not the fortress they would have hoped
39:06it would be in the Premier League and that's what they've got to come.
39:10No, it's not.
39:10But I've been, you know, I was there at the Tottenham game this year.
39:13They had a really good performance.
39:15They performed well.
39:16They lost the game, which is unfortunate.
39:17Of course it is.
39:18But it's difficult coming into the Premier League.
39:20But I saw a really good performance today.
39:21They put a lot of pressure on.
39:22I mean, Martinez needs to be on his metal towards the end of the game.
39:26That was a good Premier League performance
39:27and they were undone by a bit of brilliance.
39:29But there's no doubt about it.
39:31They're up against it.
39:32OK.

40:45Good to see of a fortunate ricochet or two.
40:48Gittens.
40:48That's a lovely lift in.
40:50And Chelsea are in front.
40:51Headed in front by Pedro Neto.
40:55Until finds Guillaume.
40:58Guillaume is taking on Twanzebbi and beating him
41:01and pulling it back for Fernandes to seal the win for Chelsea.
41:08Hammered long by Arreola.
41:10Wilson took that nicely.
41:12Hit it well.
41:13And it's in.
41:14A cracking goal from Callum Wilson.
41:19Thrilled across towards Jarrah Bowen.
41:21It will reach him.
41:23Tebow's in there.
41:24Wilson too.
41:25Dangerous.
41:26Wilson in.
41:27Callum Wilson again.
41:31Emma Nielsen.
41:34Is it a handball?
41:35It is.

41:40Scores.
41:44Sanessi.
41:46Lovely pass.
41:47Unau.

41:54Here comes Brentford into the penalty.
41:55That's risky.
41:56That's a penalty.
41:57That's a penalty all day long.
42:00So here comes Igor Thiago.
42:02Wrong foot of the keeper.
42:03Brighton nil.
42:04Brentford one.
42:06Isminti.
42:07Swarming to the task now.
42:09Better ball in for Welbeck.
42:101-1.
42:12Oh, that's a pitch and a goal.
42:17Isminti.
42:21Shot is blocked.
42:22Comes back.
42:22And it's in.
42:23Into it.
42:25Cross for this.
42:27Potter is dangerous into the box.
42:29Brentford appealing for a penalty.
42:30And they get one.
42:33And it's safe.
42:35Run this side by Bartha Bruggan.
42:40Too crazy.
42:40It's an interesting one.
42:43And Jimenez is on the end of it.
42:50Warton in space.
42:51Ricochet.
42:53Munoz with the opener for Crystal Palace.
42:57Wang.
42:58Warton.
42:59Warton.
43:00Pino.
43:01Oh, he deserves that.
43:03Warton.
43:03Tone.
43:03Warton.
43:04Pino.
43:04To the Borla.
43:04Warton.
43:05Warton.
43:05Warton.
43:05Warton.
43:06Prunegi Maresh, Barnes, Prunegi Maresh for Barnes, Newcastle in front, Cherky's corner,
43:19Baltimore is there, Gokou recovers the ball in towards Haaland,
43:26Rayan Cherky, ball as far as Ruben Diaz, the response from Manchester City instantaneous,
43:34Murphy, really good cross, and eventually in, incredible, it's Harvey Barnes once more.
43:48Oh, it's an inviting one, still might be, and it's Murillo.
43:56There could be danger here, there is, oh, Nottingham Forest have scored, and it's Nicolo Savonja.
44:03Hutchinson for Forest.
44:07Might have a shooting opportunity, good save from Alisson, Gibbs-White, 3-0, Nottingham Forest.
44:15OK, we've got a few minutes left, so I think we should talk all things Liverpool,
44:19and it is not, roll your eyes at me, 21st-11 on a Sunday night, let's have a little look
44:25at other clubs, other teams who've struggled as champions the following season,
44:30because it's not wholly unusual for a team to have a hard time.
44:34Chelsea, after they'd won the league, came back the following season,
44:37and after this stage, 12 games, only had 11 points, ended up finishing 10th.
44:43Leicester City, perhaps because that was a slight aberration and an unusual thing,
44:47wasn't it, for Leicester to win the league, you might not be as surprised with their form the following season.
44:52Blackburn Rovers, as well, United, Manchester United, in 96-97, only had 19 points,
44:58one more than Liverpool at this stage, and ended up winning the league that year.
45:02Danny, you've already declared that Liverpool are not going to win the league.
45:05No.
45:05I mean, the expectation is higher because of the amount of money invested was huge, even for Liverpool.
45:11Look, Slott's going to take a lot of stick in the next week or two,
45:16and he's going to be asked a lot of questions from the fan base, far and wide from the media.
45:22The reality is, yes, he is the manager and he has to take some responsibility,
45:25but a lot of the players have to look in the mirror, because out of last season's players,
45:32I'd say only Sir Bozly, Graven Birch, maybe Robbo, when he's come in,
45:36have even got near to the levels of last season, and that's not good enough.
45:39And that, OK, there's lots of different reasons and theories, but a lot of it's mentality,
45:45you know, because you've won some and maybe the comfort zone a little bit,
45:48because physically they're not at it, and only one of the new four or five signings,
45:52Eketike, has done well.
45:55So the players have to take some responsibility.
45:58Now, what can Slott do?
46:01He's got to make some huge decisions, and that means leaving some big players out,
46:06because back to basics is key.
46:08Defending better, working harder, being more physical, doing the hard yards.
46:12It sounds very basic stuff, but he's got to pick his most physical 11,
46:16who he thinks are going to defend the best for him.
46:18And start getting some points on the board.
46:21Don't be thinking about titles, Champions League, FA Cups, next game.
46:26Because the reality is, if he keeps losing games, he won't be in a job.
46:30On the form table, over the last six games, Joe, only Wolves are below Liverpool.
46:37Last night on Match of the Day, Rob Green and Wayne Rooney talked about leadership,
46:41they talked about getting back to basics.
46:44Is it, and you've just alluded to the same thing there, Danny,
46:47is it as simple as that?
46:50Simple, it's definitely not simple, is it?
46:51Because if it was, a team like Liverpool are more than capable of doing it.
46:54Arnaz Slott's proved himself last season that he's a very clever manager,
46:57he knows what he's doing.
46:58Just that ingredient, it's just not happening.
47:00It's gone from you, you let slide a couple of bad results.
47:04But then the other night, you watched them at home to Real Madrid,
47:06and they were fantastic.
47:07They absolutely battered Real Madrid, who have looked good this season.
47:09So, I agree with you, Danny, something's just not quite there.
47:14This is a really big moment for them in the season.
47:16They've probably hoped a few times they'd be able to paper over through the cracks
47:19and the new players would come good.
47:21They're not.
47:22They've got to step up and they've got to perform over the next couple of weeks.
47:24The balance is wrong somewhere.
47:27You know, there's too many players who look off it,
47:29and the ones who are on it can't compensate for the ones who aren't.
47:32So, he's got to find an XI that is prepared to just be more stable,
47:39be more compact.
47:40If it means putting more defensive players in and upsetting a few egos,
47:44you've got to do it.
47:45PSV at home in the Champions League and West Ham away the next two matches.
47:50Every game at the moment, you know, looks tough, doesn't it, for them?
47:53Yeah, of course.
47:54I think they would have backed themselves at Forrest at home,
47:56the position they've been this season, to win easily,
47:58and they've not.
47:58They've struggled.
47:59So, massive games in the season for them.
48:01OK, let's have a quick look, shall we, at the Premier League table.
48:04And Arsenal stretch their lead to six points,
48:06which is their biggest at this stage of a Premier League season.
48:09Aston Villa's win sends them fourth, with Tottenham now ninth.
48:12Leeds miss the chance to climb out of the relegation zone,
48:14while Wolves are cast adrift at the bottom.
48:16Next, seven sides are separated by just five points.
48:19Thank you so much to Joe and Danny.
48:21Have safe journeys home, both of you.
48:23Good night, though, from all of us.
48:25The story of the day, Arsenal four, Tottenham one.
48:28It's North London for Eze.
48:31Oh, oh!
48:34A One!
48:35A Two!
48:35Thank you, both of you.
48:42Oh!
