Volunteers at Marine Rescue Batemans Bay on their first day of training for their new rapid response vehicles - jet skis.
Transcript
00:00We're doing rescue watercraft operator training today.
00:05We've been doing some theory this morning and we're about to head out onto the water
00:11to start running through some of the practical activities that we need to do for search and rescue.
00:16So with these it's competency based training.
00:19So we have a training program which will go for a few weeks on that.
00:23The guys get comfy with it, they'll become very familiar with the craft.
00:27It's also not just about riding them, it's about preparation, looking after them,
00:31cleaning them up and having them rescue ready for the next crews that come in.
00:35The next part about it is we're here to help people be able to get through the courses.
00:40So some may be able to do it a little bit quicker than others.
00:43Some might be more advanced with it.
00:46So with that, being competency based training, we only send out those competent operators at the time.
00:52And if it takes twice as long, we'll work with them to get them through.
00:56Our rescue watercrafts are rapid response.
00:59So we try and get them out first of all while our vessels are getting ready
01:03and stabilise the casualty or a vessel and then we'll get our big vessel out to meet them.
01:09Technically they're used for a 0.5 nautical mile from the bar or harbour,
01:14but we can use them anywhere that we need to go into searches.
01:16So especially in this area here, up and around the North Durris area in Richmond,
01:21there's areas in there where these vessels can't get into.
01:25So what we're trying to achieve is being able to get into the beaches
01:28and closer off into the shorelines there and cover off a greater search area
01:32that would normally not be covered off by these size vessels.
01:35So these allow us to get into much shallower water.
01:38One of the things that with these particular types of assets is that they're easily transportable.
01:43So I might have a search all the way down in Bermagui and we can actually transfer these assets down there readily.
01:50These are SeaDoo as a model and these will do anywhere up to about 80 km an hour.
01:58So that's part of the rapid response.
02:01And we can have either one operator on them or two operators depending on what the incident is.
02:10And we have the rescue sled on the back.
02:13So we put the casualty onto there and get into the surf zone as well.
02:17And we can have either one operator on them or two operators depending on what the incident is.
02:22And we have the rescue sled on the back so we put the casualty onto there and get into the surf zone as well.
02:31And pick patients up from there.
02:33I'm actually really excited about getting onto it.
02:35There's a fair degree of apprehension as well because they are very, how would I say,
02:41a unique type of operation and the area of operation that they're going to be doing.
02:46So these type of vessels that we're standing on right now,
02:49we would normally try and avoid the bigger swells and the bigger breaking waves.
02:53Whereas these guys are actually going to be going and operating in those conditions.
02:57And that's what they're designed for.
02:59Because they need a certain amount of balance and coordination and fitness.
03:06So we need people to do a 200m swim in less than five minutes.
03:09And then other activities that we go along for the trainings.
03:14They're very zippy.
03:15So the whole thing about them, they need a fast acceleration with them as well.
03:18Because you can get into trouble easy with them.
03:21But they're also being designed so that you can get out of trouble quickly with them as well.
03:25So being able to turn on a dime and being able to press that throttle,
03:29get through a breaking wave is probably the thing that's going to save them.
03:32and to save them.
03:33So, yeah, you can see how many things are going to save them.
03:34And that's going to be a very easy to have to keep them off for the grid.
03:39So, the reason we need to do this, that's going to save them.
03:42So, I think that's going to be a very useful, a way to go through the Aim for them.
03:44And that's going to be it, that's going to be something to take them off for their own time.
