Hunter Schafer said she's turned down many trans roles and is saying she wants the public to stop focusing on her trans identity. In a new GQ cover story the 'Euphoria' star said, "I just want to be a girl and finally move on." She added that she's even hesitant to say the word "trans" in interviews.

00:10I just want to be a girl and finally move on. She added that she's even hesitant to say the

00:15word trans in interviews. I don't want to be reduced to that and I find it ultimately demeaning

00:19to me and what I want to do. Especially after high school, I was sick of talking about it.

00:24I worked so hard to get to where I am, past these really hard points in my transition,

00:28and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on. Schaefer also discussed turning down roles

00:33saying, I've gotten offered tons of trans roles and I just don't want to do it. I don't want to

00:38talk about it. In high school, Schaefer was highly publicized for being the youngest plaintiff in a

00:42lawsuit challenging North Carolina's House Bill 2, which banned trans people from using public

00:48bathrooms that didn't match the gender on their birth certificate. It felt like I had to make my

00:52art a response to everything that was happening in North Carolina when that's not really what I

00:57wanted to be making art about necessarily. I think I felt like, oh, I'm trans. I should be

01:01making art about this. The shift away from that focus has been very intentional for Schaefer. It

01:06has not just happened naturally by any means. If I let it happen, it would still be giving transsexual

01:11actress before every article ever. Elsewhere, Schaefer also opened up about her grief following the

01:16death of fellow Euphoria actor Angus Cloud, who died last summer at age 25 from an accidental drug

01:22overdose. I've never had a friend that I was that close to, and that was my age past before. It's

01:28really surreal. It doesn't make sense. And yeah, it's new. It's a new kind of grieving. Adding the
