00:00Joining us right now on a Patriots Monday is a man who had a career day yesterday, Patriots tight end Hunter Henry.
00:06He's brought to you by Drains by James, Eastern Mass' top provider of drain and sewer cleaning and repair.
00:12By Shaw's and Star Market, you can look for the new lower prices every day tags throughout the store,
00:16save on the items that you buy most, and by Verizon, the New England Patriots powered by Verizon 5G.
00:23Hunter Henry, how we doing this week?
00:25Good, guys. How are you?
00:26Good. We're doing great.
00:27As we just said, you had a career-best game in yards yesterday.
00:31Drake May referred to you as, quote-unquote, Mr. Consistency coming out of the game.
00:37I wanted to ask you, though, you dedicated a game ball, or at least they caught you shouting out Jelani Tavai after your touchdown yesterday.
00:44Why did you decide to do that?
00:48I mean, he's just going through a lot right now.
00:50I mean, I don't want to get into the details of everything, but obviously he wasn't on the trip with us.
00:54He's the guy I've played with for a while and care about, and I think we all care about, and wasn't able to make the trip with us,
01:01and I just wanted to give him a shout-out.
01:04How did things turn around for you guys offensively?
01:06First quarter, it was just two possessions, a couple of punts.
01:09Second quarter starts with the pick six, but then you guys were able to get some footing and then move down the field.
01:13Yeah, obviously not to start with one at all, but, you know, we had adversity head-on and had to attack it and, you know,
01:23just keep chugging away, keep plugging away.
01:26That's what we did.
01:27You know, there's a lot of things we've got to clean up from this game, and we've got to be better from the start.
01:31We've got to be better in the red zone, so we know that, and we've got to get in the film room.
01:35We've got to get on the practice field and get a lot better fast.
01:38I don't know if you'd agree with the characterization, but we watch a lot of the videos in the locker room
01:44that get tweeted out after the game by the team, and the locker room did seem a little down yesterday,
01:49which maybe some of that was, as you said, things to clean up on the field.
01:52I'd imagine a lot of it had to do with the injuries as well.
01:55So I don't know if you'd agree with the characterization, but what does it say about the team to get their ninth straight victory
02:00despite some of the injuries that piled up yesterday?
02:05No, man, I think that's a testament to this team.
02:07Man, we needed everybody that went on a trip with us, man, from the coaching staff to the training staff
02:11to the, you know, all 53 guys to the practice squad elevations.
02:15That's what this league is, man.
02:16That's what football is.
02:17It's a complete team game.
02:19We need everybody, and obviously that was, you know, put on full display yesterday
02:23with guys stepping up O-line-wise, guys stepping up D-line, special teams.
02:28I mean, everybody picked each other up, and, you know, that's the name of the game.
02:31You know, unfortunately, injuries do happen all the time in the league,
02:34but, you know, the cart doesn't always come out onto the field.
02:37So how is it for you guys to be able to, you know, go over to the teammate, you know,
02:42maybe say something to them, but then kind of put that out of your head
02:45and just, like, get right back onto the field even though you're seeing these guys
02:48and you don't know how severe the injuries are going to be or things like that,
02:52but to be able to kind of turn your mind off and get back to playing?
02:54Yeah, it's hard.
02:57You know, we're human at the end of the day, man, and these are our brothers,
03:01and you go to work with them and you build relationships with these guys,
03:04and it's hard for sure just to be honest with you and be real.
03:10But you got to – we still have a game to play, and we got to keep fighting,
03:14and, you know, I appreciate the guys that came in and filled those spots
03:18and the guys that just continued to fight even, you know, with things maybe not going our way injury-wise
03:23and, you know, just things not going our way early.
03:26Just continue to plug away, continue to fight.
03:28We were just highlighting some of the struggles you guys had in the red zone yesterday.
03:32You were 0-2 there.
03:34It was a goal line stand by Cincinnati yesterday.
03:38You had a touchdown call back there.
03:40What were they doing well that made things difficult on you guys in the red zone yesterday?
03:45Yeah, just made plays, man.
03:46You got to give them credit.
03:48We got to be better on our details, the little things,
03:51and just clean some things up, man.
03:53But you got to give them credit, too.
03:54They made some plays.
03:57But, yeah, we got to clean a lot up.
03:59You know, obviously you'll want to score touchdowns there in the red zone,
04:02but it's got to feel pretty good to have a kicker,
04:04or you must have a lot of confidence in the kicker.
04:06I know the first game of the season, I just as a fan,
04:09you weren't really sure how it was going to go,
04:10but Bora Gallis has been absolutely nails all season,
04:13some big ones yesterday.
04:14Yeah, I mean, huge always to have a guy like that to rely on.
04:20You know, when you get in scoring position, you feel pretty comfortable.
04:23But we're a kick at the end of the game yesterday to kind of make it a touchdown.
04:29You know, they have to go down and score a touchdown that changes the game.
04:32So he's hit a lot of big kicks for us.
04:35It's been a lot of fun to have him on the squad.
04:38You a fan of first take?
04:41Of first take?
04:42Yeah, on ESPN, Cam Newton, Stephen A., are you guys a fan of that show?
04:48I don't really watch first take.
04:50Were you aware at all of the back-and-forth,
04:53Cam Newton calling the Patriots fool of gold,
04:56Stephen A. at one point calling Drake May a liar?
04:58Were you aware of any of that?
05:00I say back-and-forth.
05:00I guess it was mostly one-sided from first take.
05:05I was made aware towards the end of the week.
05:07But, I mean, honestly, once we get into the season, man,
05:09we don't really pay attention to this.
05:11You try to, you know, block out a lot of the outside noise.
05:15Is that something that maybe people, like friends or family,
05:18will say, like, hey, did you hear this or did you see about this?
05:20Is that a way that you guys hear about some of the, you know,
05:24different talking heads when they're talking about the Patriots?
05:27Yeah, it's usually the family.
05:29It's usually the family that lets me know.
05:31You have a favorite Thanksgiving memory?
05:34I'm trying to remember if we asked you this a year ago.
05:35But, obviously, growing up, playing football on Thanksgiving,
05:38time with family around the holidays, like, is there something that stands out
05:43from your time even going back to childhood as it relates to Thanksgiving
05:46with it right around the corner?
05:48Yeah, man.
05:48I think just, honestly, high school, I was fortunate enough.
05:52I played on a pretty good high school football team.
05:54So, we were always playing on Friday nights of that weekend.
05:56So, we always had practice the day before.
06:00Just being with your boys on a Thursday, you know,
06:03Thanksgiving practice is always special.
06:05And then, you know, right after that, going to my grandma's house
06:08with your whole family.
06:09I think that was just a time that was, you know,
06:12I haven't been home in that aspect and been able to be home.
06:17And so, I look back on those times and they're super special.
06:20Well, that's a day we're all looking forward to.
06:23So, happy early Thanksgiving.
06:24And with nine wins in a row, you know what time it is, Hunter?
06:27It is time for the Hunter Henry Surprise Question of the Week.
06:31It's time for the Hunter Henry Surprise.
06:34Surprise!
06:36Henry, touchdown!
06:38Whoa!
06:38Surprise, Sidney.
06:40Hey, surprise.
06:41Surprise, mother...
06:42Surprise.
06:44Surprise.
06:44We wasted the good surprise on you.
06:46Y'all digging for the surprise in the day, huh?
06:48Question of the Week.
06:50All right, once again, on a scale of 1 to 85,
06:5285 being the most surprised you've ever been,
06:54one being not surprised at all.
06:56How surprised are you, Hunter Henry,
06:58that chickens can lay between 250 and 300 eggs in a year?
07:08Jeez, probably like 45.
07:11I was surprised.
07:12And that was the Hunter Henry Surprise Question of the Week.
07:16I'll tell you, I was like...
07:17You came up on our show last week, and we were way off.
07:19I was like an 85.
07:20You know, Keefe was embarrassing.
07:22Keefe, how many...
07:23I thought they could lay like 12 a day.
07:26Jones thought they could do 100 a day.
07:28I thought they could hit like triple digits.
07:29I thought they were just spitting out eggs left and right.
07:31No, no, no.
07:32They've got to live a life.
07:34I don't know.
07:35Okay.
07:35Right in the middle of the bag.
07:36Well, Hunter Henry, we appreciate the time.
07:38Best of luck this week.
07:39You've got a Monday night game against the New York Giants.
07:42You've got Thanksgiving.
07:43So enjoy that.
07:44We'll talk to you next week.
07:45All right, fellas.
07:46Happy Thanksgiving.
07:47All right.
07:47Thank you, Henry.
07:48Joining us here on a Patriots Monday.
07:5145.
07:52Yeah, I feel like that's a tie for some other ones.
07:54We're going to have to have Terp come up with a graphic.
07:56That might be a little heavy, the 45s.
07:59Yeah, man.
08:01Another good drop, Dad.
08:02He hit you guys with the ass crazy.
08:04I mean, I thought he just wanted out at that point in time.
08:06I don't blame him.
08:07But he thought maybe a guy from Arkansas, maybe he himself even had some chickens.
08:11And you never know, maybe he was well aware.
08:12He's like, actually, guys, I'm not surprised at all by that.
08:14Yeah.
08:15But he was middle.
08:16He was a middle surprise.
08:17Yeah, he played it.
08:17He played it middle of the road, is what he did.
08:19Like a medium surprise.
08:20I'm interested, Keith.
08:22And I was a little surprised to play the game here.
08:24Okay.
08:2545.
08:2545.
08:26I was a 45.
08:27That he kept saying there's a lot they need to clean up.
08:30Yeah.
08:30And that is the vibe I got from Vrabel after the game, too.
08:33We'll play a clip from him coming up.
08:34I think they're getting sick of not scoring touchdowns in the red zone.
08:36Okay.
08:36So Mike Reese highlighted this last week.
08:38We talked about it briefly at the time.
08:42We focused more on, you know, the defense having their issues.
08:44But we did get into their struggles in the red zone a little bit.
08:47Entering the game.
08:48They were 0-2 yesterday in the red zone, I believe.
08:51I'd have to double check that.
08:52I think they were 0-2 in the game.
08:55They've struggled scoring touchdowns down there.
08:5723 touchdowns, I guess, now in 41 trips to the red zone.
09:01It was 23 and 39 going into that game.
09:04So, yeah, why are they having so many issues down there?
09:07Oh, I don't know.
09:08Maybe giving the ball to Terrell Jennings.
09:10Maybe that's one of the reasons.
09:11But especially against that defense.
09:12Like, I'm sorry.
09:13Against that defense, you should be able to hand it to Terrell Jennings
09:16and Ramondre Stevenson and everybody else.
09:18Like, at that point in time, Will Campbell was still in the game.
09:20So it wasn't that.
09:21Wilson was gone.
09:22What the hell was that yesterday?
09:22So Henderson's coming off of back-to-back good games.
09:25I think it's a little overblown how good he was two weeks ago.
09:28You know, he was good.
09:29He scored a bunch of touchdowns.
09:30But they were breakaway runs.
09:31Yeah, and he didn't average a lot of yards per carry.
09:34But let's just say two productive games in a row.
09:36And you get the return of Ramondre Stevenson.
09:38And you have goal to go.
09:40And you're like, let's get Terrell Jennings out there.
09:41No, you have two other running backs that I think can do it.
09:44Also, okay, well, one of the other running backs had two cracks at it.
09:47He didn't score either.
09:47Why are you singling out Terrell Jennings?
09:48Well, why not Henderson then?
09:49Well, Terrell Jennings, I don't even know why he suited up.
09:53Like, you don't need him.
09:53You're going to split carries between Henderson and Stevenson.
09:57And so obviously, you know, Henderson or Stevenson coming off an injury,
09:59if you want to dress him, dress him.
10:00But I'm not giving him a goal line carry.
10:03That makes no sense.
10:04That's only one, right?
10:05So that wasn't the only issue that they had down there.
10:07But that's the one that I would look at.
10:08That was after the second pass interference on K-Shot.
10:10They went for it on fourth down, by the way.
10:12Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:12Which I didn't love when they did it.
10:15I would have kicked it.
10:15The way things were going, it wasn't a great day for the offense.
10:18The defense.
10:19Which time are you talking about?
10:19The first fourth down or the second fourth down?
10:21I think I would have kicked on both.
10:23Oh, yeah.
10:24Definitely the first one.
10:25The first one?
10:25Maybe both.
10:26Just take the points.
10:26Because it felt like if you're up by, what did that have made it?
10:28Ten?
10:29At that point, yeah.
10:30Or that would have made it only seven.
10:31No, that would have made it ten.
10:31That would have made it ten.
10:32Yeah, it would have felt kind of out of reach for the Bengals.
10:35I mean, I think they would have felt.
10:37No, no, I'm sorry.
10:37That would have made it seven.
10:38I take that back.
10:38That would have made it 20 to 13.
10:39No, so I would have done that, though, too.
10:40Seven!
10:41The second one, after they already got stuffed, I definitely would have kicked it.
10:45The first one on Booty, I was a little more on the fence about, and maybe because they
10:48didn't get it.
10:49In retrospect, I'm saying they should have kicked that one.
10:52But it was a second pass interference on Booty.
10:54This is like a whip root in the end zone after he got a big pass interference to basically
10:57get him set up down there.
10:58They run to Jennings on first down.
11:00Yeah, that's a wasted play.
11:02Then you have the touchdown overturned to Hunter Henry.
11:04Yeah.
11:05Then you get right back down by the goal line on a pass to Hunter Henry, and then Armandre
11:09Stevenson stuffed twice, third and fourth down.
11:10Oh, you guys didn't enjoy the draw play on the goal line on fourth down?
11:13No.
11:14No, I don't really get taking the ball out of Drake's hands down there.
11:18I would go to Drake.
11:18And also, remember when McDaniels...
11:19In fairness, they did try to sneak it in, tush push it with Drake May later in the game,
11:23kind of a half-hearted tush push.
11:24Yeah, what is that?
11:25You got to either go all full tush push or don't do it at all.
11:28They didn't score on that one either.
11:28That was a third down, not a fourth down.
11:30So yeah, in the red zone and down by the goal line, they were not good yesterday, and they
11:33really haven't been great.
11:35No.
11:35No, and that would be, you know, people that were talking about how much credit does Josh McDaniels
11:40get or like all this stuff.
11:41Like, well, here's an example of a spot where he needs to improve.
11:45Like, he needs to find some better play calls down there.
11:48And maybe it is just letting Drake May kind of do like some of these run pass options for
11:52him down there.
11:53Put the ball in his hands.
11:54Maybe he boots it in.
11:55Also, 2021, Hunter Henry's first year with the team, he was a big touchdown guy.
12:01And McDaniels was calling the plays then.
12:03And I feel like inside the red zone, inside goal to go, you know, throwing to him is not
12:08the worst call to make, especially against a defense like that.
12:11He had two touchdowns yesterday.
12:12They weren't going to call back.
12:13So yeah, maybe, maybe more to him.
12:15Yeah.
12:16Anyway, how concerning is that?
12:17And who do you blame for their struggles in the red zone?
12:19Is that the offensive coordinator?
12:21Did you like Romandre's game, by the way?
12:22Six carries for five yards.
12:25More carries than yards.
12:26I did not realize that was his final line.
12:28I knew it couldn't have been much.
12:28Six for five.
12:29I think it's six carries.
12:30Yeah.
12:30That must have been all the kneel downs at the end.
12:32No, no, no.
12:33Romandre had six carries for five yards.
12:35I did.
12:35I did not realize that was his line yesterday.
12:37They ran for three and a half yards as a team, but their running backs were all under
12:42four, right?
12:43Pop Douglas had a 14 yard run and Drake May had five for 22, which is 4.4.
12:47So their running backs did nothing.
12:49Yeah.
12:49How much of that is on the offensive coordinator who, again, the McDaniels mafia will never say
12:54it.
12:54How much is on him?
12:55And how much is on the quarterback?
12:57Like, honestly, I do put some of that on Drake.
12:59Like when there are plays to be made down there, not have a great game.
13:02You got to make them.
13:03But I would say, yeah, it was more his game than his issues in the red zone yesterday.
13:07Okay.
13:07Okay.
13:07Okay.
