Tonatiuh reflects on his journey from an immigrant background to co-starring with Jennifer Lopez and Bill Condon. He shares his experience working with J.Lo, describing her "like the sun" and one of the hardest-working people he's ever met. He also talks about the power of storytelling in uplifting marginalized communities, his admiration for Diego Luna and how 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' and his Sundance breakthrough have opened new doors in Hollywood.

00:00Congratulations by the way. What a what a night. Tell me what that meant to you
00:03be standing in the Echos Theatre next to Jennifer Lopez and Bill Condon on stage
00:07receiving the applause. Yeah I don't I think surreal is the only word that
00:12really fits. I mean I come from an immigrant family and so it was a little
00:16weird to be like next to Jennifer Lopez and she's like how did I get here? What
00:20left turn did I make? But yeah no I've been working in this industry for about
00:2410-12 years and so it felt like this moment where I was just like gratitude.
00:30I don't know I just felt so grateful. And how does it feel to have this movie you
00:35know hopefully it will come out soon but landing at least even in Sundance at this
00:40time when you know Bill Condon made a really powerful political statement
00:44against President Donald Trump's executive order. How do you feel about that as
00:49somebody who identifies as queer and and and also you know the issues facing
00:55immigrants as well today? I mean I entered into this industry because of
01:01politics right. Humans don't understand a world outside of story and so right now
01:08all of those communities are being constantly attacked and there's this
01:11vicious PR negative campaign against both of them and it's us we're reminding them
01:17it's like what are you doing? Our contribution to this country to this
01:21world is is vital it's important it's necessary and we are our existence is all
01:26right our joy is our right and so I think that our film if anything serves as a
01:32buck to say we deserve to take up space and we'd have a right to exist and a
01:39right to live just as much as anybody else because at the end of the day like
01:42despite whatever it's our humanity that comes there and that's what our
01:47stories about it's about our humanity. Beautiful you're seeing so much are with
01:51Diego Luna what did you work what did you learn or from watching him work or
01:56what did you take away from that experience? You know I admit first of
01:58all that man is so charming like the second you meet him you're just like oh
02:01wow okay I get it I get it he's so present he's just so present with you and I
02:10think that's the biggest gift that any actor can ask for it's just to have
02:13someone who's just really there with you. And what about Jennifer Lopez? I mean
02:17that's like working with like the Sun you know she's brilliant and she's she's
02:21stunning truly and I know that everyone probably already says this but she is the
02:25heart one of the hardest working people that I know and and just like love and
02:31respect and she was just so kind and brought the generosity to set that was
02:34just a blast. And has it led to auditions more work are you more meeting? Yeah I mean I
02:39was very fortunate I just got I got off of carry-on in December which we
02:43premiered and now we're like number three yeah crawling crawling to number two
02:48top most watched of all time and then and it's a perfect to do this it's just
02:52been it's really really really really really really fortunate so we were
02:56currently cooking up a couple of interesting projects that we can't just
02:59talk about yet but it's just been nice it's been nice to meet other creatives
03:03that's my favorite part
