Jennifer Lopez attends Sundance Premiere of 'Kiss of the Spider Woman'  Jennifer Lopez brings a heady blend of 1950s Hollywood musical and gritty prison drama to Sundance with her new film "Kiss of the Spider Woman." The musical film, about two mismatched cellmates who form an unlikely intimate bond during Argentina's 1970s military dictatorship, was the hottest ticket at this year's Sundance gathering, which typically focuses on smaller arthouse and documentary fare. "It's about how love can cure any divide. These two people who couldn't be more different in this cell together — doesn't matter their sexuality, their political beliefs. None of it," Lopez tells AFP, on the red carpet. Based on the Broadway adaptation of Argentine author Manuel Puig's novel, "Kiss of the Spider Woman" is directed by Bill Condon. 00:42Like these two people who couldn't be more different in this cell together.

00:46It doesn't matter their sexuality, their political beliefs, none of it.

00:50They just see there's two human beings there that allow each other to see each other

00:55and fall in love, and it's exactly the kinds of story

01:00that we need to see right now.

01:02The thing that when I read it, I thought to myself,

01:05oh, this role was made for me,

01:07like this is the role I was born to play.

01:10This is the one, and I had to wait,

01:12but it was worth it, you know, anything like that.

01:15It was challenging in the way

01:16that indie films are challenging, you know,

01:19where you have limited time, limited money,

01:22you gotta get it, if you don't get it,

01:23you're not doing it, and so it won't make the film,

01:27or whatever, it's a lot of pressure in that way,

01:31you know, and so you gotta come very prepared

01:33and ready to go and nail it.

01:35I knew she would help get it made,

01:36but I also knew she was the only person

01:39who played this part, you know, because it's a diva.

01:42We don't have that many divas in our lives anymore.

01:44It's sort of, I don't know whether it's gone out of fashion,

01:47but it's sort of not explored in the same way, you know?

01:50This story is just one of those that transcended time.

01:53Everything that was happening in the original book

01:55is still, those themes are still very much alive right now,

01:57so I think more than ever, it's important that

02:00everyone in the United States,

02:01everyone around the world knows you're not alone,

02:03and you get to determine who you are

02:05and how you identify, you get to determine your truth,

02:10and no one can stop you.
