00:00James Cameron may have created the Avatar world, but there's a chance the filmmaker won't continue to direct all the films.
00:07Over a decade after the mega success of the first film, Cameron decided to continue the saga with four more stories,
00:14the first of which, Avatar The Way of Water, hits theaters on December 16, 2022.
00:20The third installment hasn't been announced, but it's slated to be released in December 2024, since it filmed back-to-back with Avatar 2.
00:27The fourth and fifth movies have yet to go into production, but when they do, Cameron says he might not be at the helm.
00:33In an interview with Empire Magazine, the filmmaker noted,
00:36the Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming, and added,
00:40I think eventually over time, I don't know if that's after three or after four,
00:44I'll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over,
00:47so I can go do some other stuff that I'm also interested in, or maybe not.
00:51Despite being uncertain about his directing future with the franchise,
00:54Cameron is looking forward to seeing the storylines play out.
00:58Movie four is a quirk-er.
01:00It's a mother-
01:00I actually hope I get to make it, but it depends on market forces.
01:04Three is in the can, so it's coming out regardless.
01:07I really hope that we get to make four and five, because it's one big story, ultimately.
