00:09about the rising trends of weight management drugs. Winfrey and a mix of medical experts
00:14and patients addressed the mid-surrounding obesity and the growing class of weight
00:18management injectables such as Ozempic and others in an Oprah special, Shame, Blame,
00:23and the Weight Loss Revolution. When I tell you how many times I've blamed myself because you think
00:28I'm smart enough to figure this out and then to hear all along it's you fighting your brain.
00:32Winfrey revealed she'd first been introduced to weight loss drugs while recovering from knee
00:36surgery in 2021. Though at the time she had no interest in the budding medical intervention
00:41saying I've got to do this on my own because if I take the drug that's the easy way out.
00:45In a December 2023 People cover story, Winfrey shared that her views on weight management
00:50injectables had changed. I had the biggest aha along with many people in that audience.
00:55I've realized I've been blaming myself all these years for being overweight and I have a
00:59predisposition that no amount of willpower is going to control. Winfrey stated at the top of
01:04the telecast that the special was created for the more than 100 million people in the United States
01:08and people around the world who are living with obesity. Likening the conversation around the

01:19early 90s when alcoholism was first understood to be a disease and not a choice. Winfrey invited experts
01:25to speak to the biological factors that play into weight gain and the mechanisms by which weight

01:35and Metabolic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic stated, there's a spectrum of obesity. It's not
01:39one disease, it's many different subtypes of a disease. Before addressing the myth that individuals
01:44who are overweight and obese have simply failed to control their weight through diet and exercise.

01:54and spoke directly to viewers at home with differing opinions on weight loss medications.
