00:00The Sea of Marmara just off the coast of Turkey is being choked out by marine mucilage or what
00:09is more often called sea snot. It's a collection of microorganisms which grow when massive amounts
00:14of untreated sewage is dumped into waterways. The growth attracts both viruses and bacteria
00:19and suffocates marine life living under the surface and because of worsening climate change
00:23sea snot is growing better than ever which is why the Turkish government has now launched a
00:28disaster management program to clean up the outbreak and why filmmaker Tasin Salon is
00:33documenting its bloom recently capturing this incredible albeit quite gross video of the
00:37mucilage. According to Reuters the nation has now employed 25 surface cleaning and barrier laying
00:43vessels for the mucilage management with 18 more boats assisting in the cleanup hoping to curb the
00:48spread of the snot like substance and help protect the sea life which calls the area its home. The
00:53Turkish government says it will declare the Sea of Marmara a protected area by the end of 2021.
