00:00CBS Sports welcomes you to the following presentation of the National Football League.
00:14Welcome back to Allegiant Stadium. Moments ago, Tiffany Blackman caught up with Shadour Sanders.
00:20Shadour, you told us that this week felt like you were getting back to normal, being a starting quarterback, like you have your whole career.
00:26But this is going to be your first NFL start. What does that opportunity feel like in this moment?
00:30Feels good, but we're cool, calm, collective life. There's ain't nothing to us.
00:36And what do you hope to show against this Raiders defense, your teammates, yourself, and these Browns fans with their play today?
00:44I'm who they've been looking for. Appreciate it.
00:47Oh, man. I talked to a lot of Browns fans, and they are sure hoping that that's the case.
00:56And he's going to get a chance here right from the start of the game.
00:58Yeah, the Raiders won the toss. They deferred, so Shadour Sanders will get the football as long as something crazy doesn't happen on this kickoff.
01:07Corley back deep to receive. He's back there with Sampson for the Browns.
01:12Browns wearing their white helmets today with the white jerseys and orange pants.
01:17It's a combination that Browns fans have not seen before.
01:23And here we go.
01:26Vegas, Cleveland, and the Sanders era is underway.
01:31Sampson will take it at the four-yard line.
01:33And Sampson makes a few men miss and spins his way up to the 32.
01:38And here comes Shadour Sanders.
01:40And there are a lot of Browns fans who are here today, and he was signing some autographs.
01:49His dad, of course, was here.
01:51There he is. Cowboy had it all.
01:54Are we expecting him to take some deep shots today?
01:57I am. That's something he does very, very well.
02:00He's accurate, especially in the intermediate to deep areas of the field.
02:04Something the Browns didn't really utilize very much with Dylan Gabriel under center.
02:10First down from the 32-yard line.
02:12They're going to hand the ball off.
02:14And Jutkins dives forward for one.
02:17So Shadour is also going to try to solve this problem of first down yardage.
02:21Now, this is what happened in his debut.
02:23There was some good, but there was also some not so good.
02:26And honestly, Tom, watching the tape,
02:28I thought it looked a lot better than those statistics would indicate, right?
02:32You see the statistics, and you're thinking, oh, man, that was ugly.
02:35And I'm not here to say that he did a good job last week,
02:38but I just thought the tape showed better than those statistics.
02:42I liked some of his pocket movement.
02:44There's a couple balls there that were right on the money that just weren't completed.
02:47Fatton, the tight end, is part of this bunch formation at the bottom of the screen.
02:52On second down and 10, they go to Fatton.
02:54Makes a man miss.
02:55There was a good block.
02:56And then he's wrapped up shy of the 35-yard line.
03:02And Thomas Booker was the first one there to make the tackle.
03:06That's one of the things you're going to expect to see from Sanders in this game
03:09is getting the ball out of his hands quickly.
03:12Did that a lot at Colorado.
03:14Kevin Sapansky told us about that.
03:16But this is the money down.
03:18Third and long.
03:19The Ravens brought all kinds of pressure last Sunday.
03:23They brought the kitchen sink at this young man.
03:25And talking with the D coordinator for the Raiders, Patrick Graham,
03:30he said it's a copycat league.
03:32Let's see what pressure the Raiders dial up.
03:34They got five up right now.
03:36Play clock is down under five.
03:37Sanders from the gun.
03:38Throws underneath.
03:39Pass is complete.
03:40But he's shy of the first down by a couple yards.
03:44That was a good read by the Raiders to smother the receiver, Isaiah Bond.
03:48Now there is an injured player down on the field.
03:52It's Jimmy Chin who's been such a huge asset to this Raiders defense.
03:57I know it wasn't the first down, Tom.
04:00But I love the fact that Sanders got the ball out of his hands that quickly.
04:04That is what you want.
04:06To see how quickly he can get the ball out of his hands.
04:09Yeah, Jeremy Chin was there to make the tackle.
04:11Fell down to the ground.
04:12Chin, 60-year pro out of Southern Illinois.
04:14We talked to Max Crosby, and he really pointed to Chin
04:19as being a huge foundation piece for this defense.
04:22Well, let's hope he's okay.
04:24That would be a major loss.
04:25He plays linebacker.
04:26He plays nickel.
04:27He plays safety.
04:28He never comes off the field for the Raiders.
04:31Raheem Mostert is back deep.
04:33Or excuse me, Alex Bachman is back deep for the Raiders.
04:36But Jorquez is on to punt the ball away.
04:38So the first series in Sanders' first start is in the books.
04:50And this punt will take it to the sidelines,
04:53and he calls a very late, fair catch.
04:56And here comes Geno Smith.
04:59It's been a struggle for the Raiders offensively.
05:03Those numbers for Geno, not bad on Monday night.
05:06A lot of it was underneath, getting the ball out into the flat.
05:11Now this is the guy who's going up against Miles Garrett.
05:14Ten sacks in his last three games, four last week.
05:17He has been a machine for the Browns.
05:20And every team has a different game plan to try to stop
05:23or at least slow down Miles Garrett.
05:26We'll see what the Raiders' plan is.
05:27Right from the start, they have a big tight end over on Garrett's side.
05:31He and Max Crosby both are going to see a lot of different tight end looks.
05:34Off the play fake, Smith looking to throw.
05:36Smith going long.
05:37Smith has a main, and he overthrows Trey Tucker.
05:41He had him in the flat, wide open, and he couldn't connect.
05:48Absolutely has to be a completion.
05:50Number one, right in the middle of your screen,
05:52it's going to be a deep flag route.
05:55He is wide open, and that is one Geno Smith just can't miss.
06:01Geno would be the first one to tell you that.
06:03He's typically been very accurate.
06:05There's a reason why he was a back-to-back pro bowler with the Seahawks,
06:09but when he gets a clean pocket like that, that has to be a completion.
06:12The other part of it, too, he's going to see a lot of man-to-man defense,
06:15and he's better against man-to-man defense statistically.
06:18Hands the ball off on second down,
06:20and Janty gets up to the 20-yard line.
06:24Isaiah McGuire makes the tackle for the Browns.
06:29Well, it would certainly help the Raiders if they could get Ashton Janty going.
06:34They took him with the sixth overall pick for a reason.
06:38He only had six carries on Monday night against the Cowboys for seven yards,
06:42but even those seven yards right there brings up third and three,
06:46so any of the quick-out routes, the shallow crosses will get you the first down here.
06:50Yeah, six carries last week,
06:52and he only had two carries that were for positive yards.
06:55Smith to throw on third down.
06:56He wants to run a little bit more.
06:58This is a spot where he could run,
06:59and he slides forward for the first down.
07:02He said this will be a problem for defensive coordinators
07:05if he can pick up a few yards.
07:07And look at the Miles plan, Tom.
07:10Watch Michael Mayer, okay?
07:12He is right there to help Forsythe.
07:14And they have Parham sliding that way.
07:17That's as close to a triple team as you'll see in the NFL.
07:21Miles Garrett is used to it,
07:23but because he tried to run away from the triple team,
07:26it voided that part of the defense.
07:28Smith able to pick up the first down with his legs.
07:30As a former offensive lineman,
07:31was there anybody that you would triple team from time to time?
07:33Absolutely.
07:34Michael Strahan comes to mind.
07:35A first down on the screen to Gentry.
07:37They want to get him in space.
07:38And Gentry forward to the 29.
07:41There is a flag down.
07:44It trailed Gentry.
07:49Holding by the offense, number 67.
07:52It's a 10-yard penalty replay.
07:53First down.
07:55Will Putnam called on that penalty.
07:59By the way, that's Putnam's first penalty of the season.
08:02Now he's sliding into that center position a little bit more.
08:06It's his second start,
08:08and he really struggled on Monday night to be kind.
08:14I think there are a lot of people, Raiders fans maybe,
08:17that were not expecting him to get a second start
08:19after the struggles on Monday night.
08:21But what they really like about Putnam is his brains.
08:24Geno Smith told us he makes all the right calls, all the right checks,
08:28and right now they want that type of player at that position.
08:33Loss of 10.
08:34It'll be first down in 20, man.
08:36Motion in the backfield.
08:39Smith.
08:39Bowers.
08:41Bowers has it on the outside, covered up by Tyson Campbell.
08:45Well, these are the guys that the Raiders want to get the ball to.
08:48Gentry or Bowers.
08:49Just a quick out route against a very good man-to-man cover corner in Campbell.
08:54But Bowers is such a good route runner.
08:58I'm expecting the Browns to treat Bowers as a wide receiver all game.
09:03Meaning, even when there's two tight ends out there,
09:06that would typically be 12 personnel, Tom, you call it.
09:09One running back, two tight ends.
09:11The Browns, I think, are going to treat that as 11 personnel
09:14and make him a receiver.
09:15Out of the gun.
09:18Tucker in the backfield.
09:19It's read beautifully.
09:20And it's going to be a loss of five yards on the play.
09:23Denzel Ward was able to see it perfectly.
09:28And Brock Bowers needs a better block right here.
09:30I don't know why Brock Bowers took a couple steps forward.
09:33He is supposed to block Denzel Ward.
09:36So that is a mental error right there by Bowers.
09:39I'm not sure what his eyes were looking at.
09:41But he didn't even give Trey Tucker a chance.
09:43Brings up third and forever.
09:46Which means they better have a plan for Garrett.
09:49They do again.
09:50The tight end is over there again.
09:52They're just going to hand it off to Gentry.
09:54And Gentry is stopped at the line of scrimmage.
09:56Mason Graham, the rookie.
09:57So one rookie tackles the other.
09:59It'll be fourth down and the Raiders will punt.
10:01The crowd is booing because that's essentially a give-up play on third and 19.
10:07But with the way Pete Carroll's offensive line has struggled
10:10and the way this Browns D-line gets after the quarterback,
10:13I don't blame him.
10:17Larvidad is back deep to receive for the Browns.
10:21A.J. Cole getting this one off.
10:24Special teams have been an issue for the Raiders.
10:26Boy, there's a lot of space for Larvidad to get himself started.
10:30And he catapults his way into the Raiders' territory.
10:33The flag comes in late.
10:37A.J. Cole makes the tackle for the Raiders.
10:39I think they're going to get A.J. Cole, the punter, for a trip at the tail end of this.
10:45Tripping's been a point of emphasis in the NFL this year.
10:49But at that point, Cole ought to do whatever he could to get him down.
10:52A.J. Cole, personal foul, tripping by the kicking team number six.
10:59He picks half the distance to the goal.
11:01First down.
11:0244-yard return and then the addition at the ends.
11:06Well, look, he's a punter.
11:08So tackling technique is not his strength.
11:11They'll take that.
11:12Because if he doesn't trip him right there, it might be a touchdown.
11:16That's actually a good penalty by A.J. Cole.
11:19Because it at least gives the Raiders' defense a chance to hold him to a field goal here.
11:22All right, so now it brings Shador Sanders and the Browns into the red zone to start.
11:26A little bit easier situation for him in this spot?
11:29Yes, but also an area where the Browns have got to convert.
11:32They struggled in the red zone last week against the Ravens after the muffed punt.
11:37They settled for a field goal.
11:38This is an area where Sanders' playmaking ability really came through in college.
11:44He is good down here in the red area.
11:46Bond in the slot at the top of your screen.
11:49Cedric Tillman toward the sidelines.
11:53He'll hand it off to Jenkins.
11:54Jenkins doing a little bit of dancing in the backfield.
11:56And he dives forward to the seven-yard line.
12:05And it'll be second down.
12:06Pretty good gain on first down.
12:07Remember, this is a team that's last in the National Football League in first down yardage.
12:12And Sanders is going off the field.
12:13Sanders just ran off the field on this play, which means you're probably expecting some type of direct snap.
12:24Looks like Judkins takes the direct snap.
12:26If you're Raiders, you're thinking to run all the way.
12:29Maybe the Browns have a surprise pass off of it.
12:32White Hart, the tight end, is in the backfield.
12:34Judkins will keep it himself.
12:37Judkins with a burst inside the five.
12:39To the goal line.
12:41Touchdown, Browns.
12:44Excellent blocking on the right side of the offensive line.
12:47And the Browns are on the board.
12:49You said it, Tom.
12:58Look how well blocked this is.
12:59Look at power.
13:01Joel Batonio with the big block.
13:02And then Judkins runs right through Polamau at 225 pounds.
13:08That is how Judkins plays football.
13:11That is demoralizing if you're the Raiders' defense.
13:14Because on the direct snap, you are expecting run all the way.
13:17And you still got it shoved right down your face.
13:20And on for the point after.
13:22And that one is a line drive.
13:25It's 7-0 Browns.
13:27It's only the second touchdown allowed by the Raiders since week four in the first quarter.
13:33And Sanders certainly pleased.
13:35Last night, the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix was contested in the shadows of the sphere.
13:42Max versus Stappen.
13:43Simply lovely.
13:46Picked up the win.
13:48Speaking of lovely, let's go to Adam Schein in New York.
13:52Boy, that is a huge game for the Chiefs.
13:54You know, the Colts are, I don't want to say they're playing with house money,
13:56but it's a huge game for the Chiefs.
13:58Can you imagine if the Chiefs were 5-6?
14:01No.
14:02Losing record.
14:03I mean, that, they desperately, desperately need that win.
14:07We'll keep an eye on Miles Garrett.
14:08We'll see how they are able to contain him on the outside.
14:12Two tight ends over him on this play.
14:17Gino Smith under center.
14:18Tucker in motion.
14:20They get it to Gentey.
14:21And Gentey, but he's smothered.
14:22A yard behind the line of scrimmage.
14:24Miles Garrett came from the other side to make that tackle.
14:27So, how do you let him go unblocked like that?
14:33Yeah, particularly with what he's on pace for.
14:3625 and a half sacks.
14:37It's incredible, but they ran an inside zone to the right,
14:40and even though there was two tight ends to that side,
14:43nobody touched Miles Garrett.
14:45Look at that.
14:46I mean, that's one of the easiest tackles for loss he'll have all year.
14:50Yeah, that's one of the things that Pete Carroll talked about was his motor,
14:52just how he's from start to finish.
14:55He is constantly moving.
14:56Here comes Garrett as Smith throws it up for Tucker,
14:59and it's incomplete.
15:00Devin Bush was also there.
15:07I don't know what's going on right now, Tom.
15:09Watch Miles on this play, okay?
15:11Just watch him.
15:15Mayer gives him a chip and then lets him go.
15:17That's not going to work.
15:19I mean, a tight end just giving him a little bit of shove on the way out into the route?
15:24That is not a pass protection that's going to work.
15:27He's going to have eight sacks in this game
15:29if you have plays like they did the back-to-back last plays
15:32where they barely even try to block him.
15:33Well, they shift two tight ends over to the left side of the offensive line.
15:37Play clock is down to three.
15:38Smith takes the snap.
15:39Here comes the blitz.
15:40He's in trouble.
15:41Breaks away, and he's going down.
15:44Grant Delpit came charging through,
15:47and then Malik Collins was able to clean it up.
15:52Well, they ran a twist stunt, and you'll see Delpit.
15:55He comes all the way around.
15:57So watch the guys up front.
15:58They're going to go right, here comes Delpit, right up the middle.
16:02The Raiders' offensive line has to see that and pass it off.
16:06They are struggling here early, much like they did Monday night.
16:10It'll be fourth down, and the Browns will get it back.
16:12And again, special teams have been a problem for both of these clubs.
16:19Larvidette is back deep to receive.
16:21They're going to kick it away from him.
16:22It's still going to give the Browns excellent field position.
16:24Up 7-0.
16:27Shador Sanders and the Browns going back to work midway through this first quarter.
16:31Welcome back to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
16:38It's a spectacular stadium where Shador Sanders and the Browns lead at 7-0
16:43as he begins this possession again.
16:46They've got Dylan Sampson in the backfield.
16:47Kevin Stefanski told us yesterday that he is going to try to get him more touches.
16:51And they give him the pitch.
16:55Look out.
16:56Oh, man, Max Crosby just spun him down.
17:00He is so athletic.
17:02All right, so, Shador, people wonder, well, what has this rookie season been like?
17:06Well, the Browns have implemented what they call the Hungry Dogs,
17:09which gives some of the rookies some extra reps after practice.
17:14He's had five extra sessions.
17:16So, at the end of the Wednesday practice, Thursday, Friday practice,
17:19there's an extra period.
17:20They added a period Saturday and Monday.
17:23So, five extra periods more or less because of the volume of rookies
17:27but also having two rookie quarterbacks.
17:30And then he's also three days a week met privately with Stefanski
17:33to go over the practice reps.
17:35Sanders to throw on second down.
17:36Now he's going to run.
17:37He's tracked down from behind.
17:39It was picked up beautifully by the Raiders.
17:43Malcolm Koontz was there to make the tackle.
17:46So, this would be a coverage sack
17:48because the offensive line for the Browns did the job here.
17:51Sanders had all kinds of time.
17:53I like that he stepped up in the pocket rather than going back.
17:56He didn't see anything he liked,
17:58so he tried to tuck it away and get yardage.
18:01Now, the extra reps are good,
18:02but Shador even told us that the speed of the game is so different,
18:06and that's part of what he has to be adjusted to.
18:09Third and 16.
18:10Defense is playing well.
18:11You have a lead.
18:12Would not be surprised if this is some type of screen or quick pass
18:16getting out of his hands.
18:17Here we go on third down.
18:19Crosby's pressuring.
18:19He's going to go long to the far side.
18:21He overthrows his intended receiver.
18:23It was Jerry Judy.
18:25Now, the Hungry Dogs doesn't give him a chance to work with Judy that often,
18:29so this was the first week where he really got time.
18:32But it was Kevin Stefanski's brainchild, the Hungry Dogs,
18:37that marketer that he is.
18:39Says something about the Browns' confidence in him
18:42that on third and 16 like that,
18:43they had him throw it deep as opposed to just a give-up play
18:47like we saw from the Raiders on their last possession.
18:52The Horkes on the punt for the second time.
18:54This is going to wind up being a short one,
18:59and a fair catch is called to the 26-yard line.
19:027-0 Browns.
19:03Geno Smith playing from behind with 521 to play here in the first quarter.
19:08It's Vegas, so many things to see.
19:10Russ, where are you, in the top of that right there?
19:13I thought you'd go over there.
19:15Your first trip to Vegas ever.
19:16First trip to Vegas.
19:17In your 50s, how is that even possible?
19:19Yeah, I was a big Dan Tana fan, too, when I was a kid.
19:22On first down, a flag blows this play dead.
19:26Be a false start.
19:27Before the snap, false start.
19:29Offense number 66.
19:30Five-yard penalty.
19:31First down.
19:32That's Parham.
19:33Parham has four penalties now this year,
19:35and that's the look.
19:36That's a look that you've seen before from Pete Carroll,
19:38and he's scratching his head
19:39because the offensive line has been a problem even today.
19:42They have really struggled this year.
19:44You know, watching the tape of both these teams for this game, Tom,
19:48I don't think any of the Raiders' offensive linemen would start for the Browns.
19:52And the Browns' offensive line hasn't been great this year,
19:55but they're still better at all five spots than are the Raiders.
19:58Loss of five.
19:59It's first down at 15.
20:02Tucker comes in motion.
20:07Geno looked that way.
20:08He was trying to find Tucker, and he just falls down.
20:10I'm assuming that was Tucker that he was supposed to find on the near side.
20:15Shelby Harris will be credited with the sack.
20:18Well, Cam Thomas, 99, made the play.
20:21It was going to be a quick wide receiver screen.
20:23Top of your screen.
20:23Watch 99.
20:24He gets in the way right there.
20:27Geno's worried that Cam Thomas will get a piece of it,
20:30maybe a tipped interception.
20:32Didn't want to take that chance,
20:33but here we are already, second and forever for the Raiders.
20:37Got to try to get at least half of it back here.
20:40Second down and 19.
20:43Two sacks already for the Browns.
20:44And Miles Garrett, although he's wreaked havoc,
20:47has not picked up a sack yet.
20:50They go to Gentry.
20:52And Gentry is tracked down from behind.
20:55He may have gotten a half a yard, but that's about it.
20:58It'll be third down.
21:01Chip Kelly, the offensive coordinator for the Raiders.
21:04You know, he's got some weapons, including Gentry and Bowers,
21:07but they just haven't been able to get positive yards every single time.
21:11Well, they're 31st in the NFL in scoring,
21:13which is about all you need to know.
21:16And I think Chip Kelly, you know, he's had success at the college level.
21:20Been a while since he's had success at the pro level,
21:23trying to make do with what he has along the offensive line.
21:27But they're not going to do very much
21:29if you continue to have some of these schemes
21:31and some of these mental errors.
21:33Down at 18.
21:34Smith takes the low snap.
21:35He steps up in the pocket, throws underneath,
21:37passes complete to Mayer.
21:39And Mayer scampers across the 30.
21:41He's shy of the first down.
21:44As Harden's there to make the tackle,
21:46it's a gain of 14.
21:47It'll be fourth down.
21:48So that's well done by Geno,
21:51stepping up in the pocket,
21:52not taking a sack, getting the ball to Mayer.
21:55But when you have 18 yards to go
21:57and you throw the ball underneath,
22:00it's highly unlikely to get a first down,
22:02another three and out for the Raiders.
22:03Here's Pete Carroll, who still has the competitive juices.
22:06There's no doubt.
22:06We asked him about playing some of the young players,
22:09and he said he will if he thinks that they can contribute
22:11to the win total.
22:14But he said he's here to win every single week.
22:17Larvedan goes up above the 25.
22:20Shador Sanders and the Browns lead at 7-0.
22:22He'll up the ball when we return.
22:26First trip of the year for Deshaun Watson,
22:28and there's some significance to that.
22:30A, he's healthy enough to travel after his second Achilles surgery last January,
22:34but also he's been trying to mentor Shador Sanders.
22:38On first down from the 27-yard line.
22:43Off the play fake, Sanders dumps it off.
22:45He's got Fannin.
22:47And Fannin is tight end.
22:49Breaks a few tackles.
22:50Has a first down.
22:51That's some heavy running.
22:54That a bounce close to the 44-yard line.
22:58Boy, what a draft choice Harold Fannin Jr. was.
23:01He blocks just enough.
23:03Sanders puts it on him.
23:04Watch the run after catch here.
23:05Jeremy Chin, get off of me.
23:08Gets the first down.
23:09They're trying to punch the ball out.
23:11Had a terrific year.
23:13Top five among all rookies in both receptions and yards.
23:17Pretty good for a mid-round pick.
23:19Tight end out of Bowling Green.
23:20Gain of 17 yards.
23:22Kevin Stefanski told us earlier this season
23:24they saw him against Texas A&M and Penn State,
23:26and he did more than hold his own.
23:28That's when they knew that he could be an NFL tight end
23:31as Jenkins is wrapped up from behind.
23:33Hey, let's check in with Adam Schein, an update with Kansas City.
23:37Check back to you.
23:39You know, Adam, last year, you look at their record.
23:41They're 6-5.
23:41Last year, they were 9-1 after the first 10 games,
23:44but they won all the close games.
23:45They hadn't done that this year until today.
23:480-1-5 in one score game.
23:49Amazing.
23:50Until that one.
23:50Second down and 8.
23:53Off the run by Judkins.
23:55Sanders.
23:55Pressure's coming.
23:56Sanders runs away from it.
23:57Nearly intercepted.
23:58He threw it too hard.
24:00So Deshaun Watson is here, Tiff,
24:02and there is an impact on that.
24:04Yeah, there certainly is, Tom.
24:05And I spoke with him before the game,
24:06so he told me he did get the clear from his doctor to attend games,
24:10and that GM Andrew Barry wanted him to be around the team.
24:13So he's really enjoyed being in that quarterback room.
24:16And every time Judor Sanders has come off the field, guys,
24:19Deshaun is the first person that he's gone up to.
24:22So he's been in his ear as well as telling me
24:24he's been a mentor for Dylan Gabriel as well.
24:27Tom will hit pause on that after this play.
24:30Raiders brought a lot of pressure on that last play.
24:33They've got 7 up right now.
24:35Two guys in the A-gap.
24:36They're down at 8.
24:37Here comes the pressure.
24:38Running away from it is Sanders.
24:40He's looking long.
24:40He's got a man.
24:42Caught at the 10-yard.
24:43He's down at the 10-yard line.
24:45He's down to the 1-yard line.
24:48It'll be first and goal for the Browns.
24:51He beat Darnay Holmes for 53 yards.
24:57Man, there is a lot to like there.
25:00Watch the blitz.
25:01The blitz gets home.
25:03So Shador has to buy time.
25:05Tyree Wilson comes free.
25:06Rolls to his right.
25:07Throwing on the move.
25:09That is a dot to his fellow rookie, Isaiah Bond.
25:13What a bomb from Shador Sanders.
25:1615 games since the Browns had a 50-yard or more pass.
25:21It's the third longest drought in the NFL.
25:24Wildcat again here with Judkins.
25:25On first and goal.
25:27And this play is blown dead.
25:28There may have been some movement in the backfield.
25:30Oh, no.
25:30A timeout call by the Browns.
25:31Before the snap and before the game, timeout Cleveland, their first 30-second timeout.
25:38Yeah, the play clock was winding down.
25:40All right, Tiffany.
25:41So Deshaun's probably pretty happy about that pass play.
25:43Yeah, I would definitely say so.
25:45He's enjoyed getting to mentor Shador as well as Dylan Gabriel is what he told me.
25:49And he said that the advice he gave Shador for this game being his first start was just to go be yourself.
25:55Be him.
25:56He also told me as for his timeline and making a return back, he said he hopes it soon.
26:00And that him and the Browns organization are all on the same page.
26:04You know, it's interesting.
26:05Shador is not considered to have like an elite arm.
26:09But to throw it on the move, 40-plus yards in the air like that, was pretty darn impressive.
26:15Extra lineman in Jenkins, left side of the offensive line.
26:18Direct snap coming to Judkins.
26:20And here he goes again.
26:22He scored earlier.
26:23He lowers his shoulder to the goal line.
26:25Touchdown, Browns.
26:27Second Wildcat run of the day for Cleveland.
26:30And this time the key block was Blake Whitehart.
26:40Watch Whitehart, 86.
26:42He's their third string tight end.
26:44There's a double team ahead of him.
26:45Now, right at the last second, he gets off on Devin White and Judkins runs in.
26:49That is unbelievably demoralizing if you're the Raiders' defense.
26:54They've got a bunch of veterans up there that preach physicality.
26:59To have a team not once but twice score Wildcat touchdowns on you is tough to stomach.
27:05This one is drilled through.
27:06It's 14-0.
27:07Browns will be back in 30 seconds after this from State Farm.
27:13Sanders talking to Fannin on the sidelines.
27:16We also saw Bond on the sidelines.
27:18His last reception was October 12th, which is amazing to think.
27:24But Sanders now 4 of 6 for 77 yards.
27:26Well, and the crazy thing is we've talked so much this season about this rookie class for the Cleveland Browns.
27:32You think Mason Graham and Swessinger on defense, certainly Samkin, Samson, Judkins, fan on offense.
27:40That's two of the guys you haven't talked that much about.
27:43They just chip shots this one.
27:48And the Raiders will return this one.
27:50And up to the 25-yard line.
27:52This week, NFL players are wearing custom cleats through the My Cause, My Cleats to spotlight the causes closest to their hearts.
27:59Visit NFL.com slash My Cause, My Cleats to learn their stories.
28:04You can bid on cleats and support the charities making a difference in communities.
28:10And you can also bid on our shoes that we're wearing today.
28:14I mean, they were pretty sweet.
28:16We got them yesterday.
28:18I got representation of the Miracle League in Mercer County and home front.
28:23And also education outweighs them all.
28:25Yep.
28:25Concussion Legacy Foundation from me.
28:27He's trying to help NCTE.
28:30Here's Jente, Jente in the open field.
28:32Jente has a first down, makes a few men miss.
28:35And then does a bunny hop to midfields.
28:41And that is the type of stuff he did at Boise State.
28:44It is rare when the first guy takes down Ashton Jente.
28:50He is so good at breaking tackles.
28:53Love the fact that on that play, they got him the ball in space.
28:57They try to do that on Monday night at times as well.
29:00He is very tough for any one guy to try to bring down.
29:03And Raiders don't have to run a play here.
29:05It could be a hard count.
29:06Yeah, clock winding down here in the first quarter.
29:08Smith takes the snap, and that will be the end of the first quarter.
29:11So they'll have to just switch sides and not go too far.
29:15Brown's up 14-0.
29:16We'll be back with the second quarter from Las Vegas right after this.
29:30Things are a little clearer in the AFC with the New England Patriots winning today.
29:33They're 10-2.
29:34Of course, the Kansas City Chiefs are still on the outside looking in, but that victory
29:38over the Colts, who are now 8-3, that was a big one for them.
29:43They're in the backfield as the fullback in the I formation.
29:46Jente stands up tall.
29:47That's his normal stance as Smith looking to throw.
29:50Pressure's coming.
29:50He throws to the left for Tucker, and he overthrows his intended receiver.
29:55Tyson Campbell was in on the coverage.
29:56Because the Raiders wanted pass interference on that, but that pass was well overthrown.
30:02It'll be second down.
30:07Well, Geno Smith over from Seattle, where he first met Pete Carroll.
30:13Eventually became the starter in Seattle.
30:17And boy, do those guys love each other.
30:19They do.
30:19I mean, they sing the praises of each other, and rightfully so, given the success they had up there.
30:24There's Jente.
30:24They throw it to Jente.
30:25He's got some blockers.
30:26And Jente along the numbers.
30:28You can see why they want to give him the ball in space.
30:31Schlesinger comes over to make the tackle.
30:33It's a gain of 10 yards and a first down.
30:40They're trying to find creative ways to get the ball to Jente.
30:48They'll spot the ball inside the 40-yard line.
30:51It'll be a first down.
30:54Besh in the game.
30:56The rookie, he's on the edge of the offensive line.
30:59There comes Tucker in motion.
31:03Hands it off to Jente.
31:04And Jente looks right.
31:05Schlesinger's there.
31:05Schlesinger meets him in the backfield.
31:08What do you have, Tiffany?
31:09Yeah, guys, before this play, we did see Jente shed some tackles.
31:12And I talked to him about his contact balance.
31:14He said the number one thing for him is studying how his opponents tackle,
31:17seeing if they go lower or higher, do they wrap up or not.
31:20And that dictates how he attacks them.
31:22And then something he's kept up with since college,
31:24I had a couple of his Boise State games,
31:26is he's still putting in the work with Pilates and the yoga guys.
31:30So that flexibility there and core strength helping them to shift around.
31:33Are you a big yoga guy?
31:34I'm a big yogurt guy, not a yoga guy.
31:37I do yoga twice a week.
31:38I love that.
31:40Second down at 12.
31:41Well, you and Tiffany can do enough yoga for the three of us.
31:44Pass is complete.
31:46It's Thornton, the other rookie.
31:48And they want to get these young players involved a little bit more
31:51as the season continues to evolve.
31:54But they don't want to do it at the detriment of losing games.
31:57But these guys, with the trade of Jacoby Myers, they're going to step up.
32:00That is a beautiful ball from Geno Smith,
32:04right in the window to Thornton, who's known as a speedster.
32:08So when you have the speed that Thornton does,
32:11you know that they're going to be backed off.
32:13So an in-breaking route like that should be open.
32:15Gain of 14 yards.
32:17Mostert in the game for the first time in the backfield.
32:21First down, Smith looking to his left, throws to his right.
32:25Mostert makes a few bad miss, but not much is there.
32:28Mason Graham eventually cleaned up a few spins,
32:31but it's going to be a loss on the play.
32:34As Genty will check back in.
32:37And that's tough.
32:38I mean, a screen pass on first down and you lose six yards.
32:43It's supposed to be a safe play.
32:45It was not well blocked.
32:48Really, Geno probably would have been better off there
32:50just dirtying it if he was able to see
32:52that the Browns had two defenders out there.
32:54It's an awesome second down at 16.
32:56Genty back in.
32:57We're going good.
33:03Genty.
33:05He dives to the 30-yard line.
33:07A gain of three yards.
33:09Devin Bush there to make the tackle.
33:12Second to Schwestinger in tackles for the Browns.
33:15It's a very good linebacking crew.
33:17In fact, overall, it's a really good defense for the Browns.
33:19It is a really good defense.
33:22I mean, they're second in the NFL in yards per game,
33:25only behind the Houston Texans.
33:28Let's see where Miles Garrett lines up on this one.
33:30Right now, he's standing over the center.
33:33You got Miles Garrett right there.
33:36Let's see what he ends up doing.
33:38He's going to attack the center right here.
33:40A third down at 13.
33:41He plows right in.
33:43And Smith off the back leg overthrows his intended receiver.
33:46Lock it.
33:47It'll be fourth down.
33:49So what happens there is the Browns identified Putnam
33:53as being a guy that would really struggle.
33:56So you have the two guys go wide,
33:58so Miles Garrett gets Putnam one-on-one.
34:00I got to tell you, that's a heck of a job by Putnam.
34:04Putnam is hanging on for dear life there.
34:06That's actually a really nice job by him
34:09to give Geno a chance to even get rid of the ball.
34:12I got to be honest, I'd be thrilled, Tom,
34:14if I blocked Miles Garrett that well like Putnam just did.
34:17Well, this will be a 48-yard field goal attempt
34:19for Daniel Carlson.
34:21A.J. Cole is the holder.
34:23Snaps were a problem in warm-ups.
34:25That snap was okay.
34:27The hold was good.
34:28The kick is off to the left, though.
34:30Maybe the timing was just off a hair,
34:33and it remains 14-0 Browns.
34:36Raiders fans, not a whole lot to be happy about
34:39in this first half.
34:42Got it down in time.
34:44Just couldn't get it off,
34:45and yes, that's the look of angst.
34:5114-0 Browns on top.
34:53Sanders so far, 4 of 6, 77 yards.
34:57Judkins and Sampson both in the game for the Browns.
35:00Sanders, it's intercepted at the 44-yard line.
35:09Charles Snowden with the pick,
35:11and the Raiders will have excellent field position.
35:19He just didn't see the traffic to his left.
35:21Well, they fooled him.
35:23They dropped the end man in the line of scrimmage, Snowden.
35:27Watch Snowden right here.
35:29He's on the line of scrimmage.
35:30He's going to drop back,
35:31and I don't think Shador Sanders was expecting him.
35:34He thought Snowden was going to go out to the flat.
35:37Snowden came right back inside,
35:38and Sanders threw it right to him.
35:41That is a lesson learned for Sanders,
35:49and the last thing the Browns could really afford right now
35:51with the way they're playing two-touchdown lead.
35:54Yeah, 14-0.
35:55The Raiders last got to this end.
35:57They missed that field goal attempt.
35:59Gentiles wrapped up from behind by Mike Hall.
36:02He gained a couple yards.
36:05It'll be second down and eight,
36:06and again, these first down plays
36:08do not produce a whole lot of yardage for their team.
36:11This is why they don't run the ball very much.
36:13The Raiders don't run it very much
36:14because they don't have any success.
36:16The goal isn't to see how many runs
36:18you can have by the end of the game.
36:19The goal is to move the ball down the field.
36:22Gentile, like every runner,
36:24would rather have a higher volume of carries,
36:26but you can't just keep running the ball for two yards.
36:29What's up? We're going good.
36:30We're going good.
36:34Oh, boy.
36:36That's a botched play.
36:38It'll be Hall that will be credited with the sack.
36:41It's going to be the third sack already for the Browns.
36:47So that is a busted play,
36:49and that can't happen in pro football.
36:51Pete Carroll has to be going crazy right now
36:54because now it's third and long again,
36:58and we'll see where the Browns put Miles Garrett.
37:03He's moving around again.
37:05They've got an overload to that side.
37:07The Raiders better slide left.
37:10Larry means they're sliding left to help protect that side.
37:16Here comes the third down play.
37:18Geno Smith to his left.
37:19Pass is complete to Lockett,
37:21and he's shy of the first down.
37:23It'll be fourth down.
37:24Campbell in on the coverage.
37:25Unbelievable.
37:29Watch Ashton Gentry right here, number two.
37:31Whap!
37:31Right there in the middle on Grant Delpit,
37:34almost breaking his back.
37:35That is awesome.
37:37That is what you need to see from your rookie running back.
37:40They didn't get the first down,
37:42but Ashton Gentry has gotten better and better in the passing game,
37:46and that was a terrific blitz pickup.
37:48Yeah, this will be a 41-yard field goal attempt.
37:51They've already missed a 48-yarder.
37:53Just looked like awkward form by Carlson on the last miss.
37:58Cole seems ready.
37:59Takes the snap.
38:01They place it down.
38:02This kick is good,
38:03and the Raiders are finally on the board.
38:06They use the pick of Shador Sanders
38:09and put it into three.
38:10Game like Survivor when alliances crumble and trust is God,
38:17it's every player for themselves.
38:18All-new Survivor, CBS Wednesday,
38:20and streaming on Paramount+.
38:2214-3, Browns on top.
38:25Raiders will kick it off.
38:28Corley and Samson back deep to receive.
38:30It's Corley who takes it at the three-yard line on the far side.
38:34And he breaks a few tackles, and he explodes,
38:37and a flag comes in.
38:38And let's see who that penalty is against.
38:49Browns are pointing toward the Raiders.
38:51Illegal formation by the kicking team,
38:53number 32, left early.
38:55This five-yard penalty will be added to the end of the play.
38:57It's first down.
39:00Well, how about Shador?
39:01There's been some good, and there's been some bad.
39:03Well, the good was this throw,
39:05and he got rocked as he threw that touchdown pass.
39:10It's the one thing you saw a lot in college.
39:12He is tough as nails.
39:13And then he got fooled.
39:15You know, this is a lesson that he's going to have to learn,
39:18and there's going to be more.
39:20I think so far, Tom, it's probably about what I expected.
39:22Some really good positives and the one major negative.
39:26Let's see if the Raiders bring some extra pressure.
39:28It's Corley on the jet suite.
39:29Nothing's there.
39:31A loss of six.
39:33Snowden makes the tackle.
39:34All right, so we've heard this this week
39:36about how many starting quarterbacks since 1994.
39:39There have been 45 for the Browns.
39:40There have been 45 U.S. presidents overall.
39:44But the 45 starting quarterbacks since 1994,
39:47I mean, Browns fans,
39:48they see the list go up and down week after week.
39:52So who thought of that in our stat or graphic department?
39:57I think Chris Svensson, our director.
39:59Yeah, he's our local historian.
40:05Second down and 16.
40:08Pass complete to the outside.
40:10It's Tillman.
40:12But the list of Browns quarterbacks,
40:14we asked Kevin Stefanski about it.
40:17You know, he said, you know,
40:18we're problem solvers as coaches.
40:20And his problem right now,
40:22it's a third down that he's facing.
40:25You see all the quarterbacks since 1994
40:26where the Browns are and the Raiders are.
40:28So the Raiders only rushed three
40:30and dropped eight in the coverage on that last snap.
40:34Third and 11.
40:36I'd be surprised if they don't heat Shador Sanders up.
40:39The Ravens had so much success with it last week.
40:43Patrick Graham told me he hopes it's deja vu all over again.
40:46Well, you got to bring these guys.
40:47Max Crosby's at the bottom of your screen.
40:48They have help on him.
40:49Sanders rolls out, throws on the run.
40:51He's just throwing it away.
40:54And it'll be fourth down.
40:55I mean, there was nothing open.
40:58I thought he had Jerry Judy for a second.
41:01But the window closed pretty quickly.
41:05Watch Judy.
41:08Oh, he did have him.
41:10You're right.
41:10When Kelly fell.
41:11But he needed to throw it earlier than that if he saw him.
41:15Yeah, because after a few moments, he was covered up.
41:20And Kelly actually didn't get the start today.
41:23Caillou blew Kelly.
41:24They started Darion Porter, the rookie, instead of him,
41:26because of how much Kelly struggled Monday night
41:29against those Cowboys receivers.
41:30Bachman back deep to receive this one.
41:32He calls it wildly late, fair catch.
41:35From the 21-yard line, it's 14-3 Browns.
41:38Sanders and Judy talking it over.
41:40Geno Smith will get it back when we come back.
41:41Coming up on the Verizon Halftime Report,
41:44join JB, Nate, Matt Ryan, and Coach Cower
41:46for all the latest NFL scores and highlights.
41:48It's all coming up on the Verizon Halftime Report.
41:5214-3 Browns on top.
41:54Missed field goal.
41:55Made field goal for the Raiders so far.
41:58Geno Smith has time.
42:00Throws.
42:01And it's deflected.
42:02Nearly intercepted.
42:04Geno's been under pressure today.
42:06He really has.
42:08I mean, it started with the stunt
42:10for the left side of the offensive line.
42:12Inside.
