00:00Fittest family. It's the first of our quarterfinals here at the legendary Hell and Back and the
00:05competition is really heating up. Tonight it's Davey Fitz and the Smiths, Andrew Trimble and
00:10the McKennas, Michael Dara with the Burns, each of them battling it out for a place in the
00:15semi-finals. But tonight one of them will lose a family. Let the games begin.
00:21Come on, come on. Let's go, go, go, go.
00:25You're there. You've only another few years to go. Come on. Two minutes. Let's go, let's go.
00:34Come on, lift her up. Grit your teeth.
00:38Welcome to our first quarterfinal in the infamous bog of Hell and Back. With lots of muck, sweat
01:01and tears ahead, it's time to raise the stakes yet again. So let's find out who's got some skin in the
01:07game tonight. But first, let's take a quick look back on how we got here. Over an intense three
01:14weeks of heats, 12 families became nine as three families crashed out of the competition.
01:19Get up. Some coaches were luckier than others. Yes. I'm absolutely buzzing. And some were
01:26fighting to stay in the game. You can't afford a mistake and I'm having too many at the moment.
01:31Michael Dara won and a nil. That kills me to say it. Over the next three weeks, we will see our coaches
01:38and families take part in some of the most competitive and intense events this competition has ever seen.
01:44Come on, dig in. Next week in our second quarterfinal, it's Donika's Linehan's
01:51versus Michael Dara's Walsh's versus Andrew's Hilliard's. That's it, Mikey. You catch him. You
01:57catch him. Ten seconds and you're doing it, but work. Our third and last quarterfinal will be
02:02Anna's Cars versus Davies McDonough's versus Ellen Stewart's.
02:07Let's go. Under, under, under. But it's this week's quarterfinal that we're here to see.
02:14Davies Smiths from Loud. Michael Dara's Burns from Dublin. Andrews McKenna's from Monaghan.
02:22All our quarterfinalist families will be hoping to get a place in our semifinals in our brand new
02:27location, Draudeport. But only one family will make it to the final, get to the top of those ramps,
02:34and win the title of Ireland's Fittest Family 2025. Andrew, Michael Dara, Davie. Here we go again.
02:43Davie, I hate to point out the obvious, but you are probably the most senior member
02:47of coaches right now. How are you feeling? What I'm thinking is I'm the oldest standing
02:52up by a long shot, right? And I'm not as mobile as the two boys. That's what I'm thinking.
02:55And so they probably have that advantage on me. But like, I think this year it's different. What
03:01are we, we've three teams racing against each other. I'm kind of looking forward to the carnage
03:05of what's going to happen. And looking forward to seeing how the boys, they're so relaxed and
03:09chilled out now. As a feeling, that's not going to be the way. For you, like, how are you feeling?
03:14What's your tactic going into it? Yeah, here we are, the famous bog from the telly. The tactics,
03:19like, they're kind of your cardio and strength. Like, boy, the burns are strong. They are strong.
03:23They're all buff lads. But I was like, this is all about hearts. It's all about just grinding it out.
03:27The bog is an experience, right? And this is your first time going up against the legend that is
03:34Davy Fitz. So how does that feel? Yeah, I mean, like I tell myself, we're out of our depth in terms
03:39of experience. This lad here is a wily old veteran when it comes to the bog. So a bit of preparation,
03:44but just trying not to overthink it as well. You know, like, bring the goggles, bring the armbands.
03:49Let's see how we get on. Worst case scenario, just get them across the finish line. You really have no
03:53idea what's coming to you. Well, lads, may the mud be with you. I'll see you all back
03:58here at the finish line. Best of luck. Here's how the quarterfinals work. Tonight,
04:05our families will take on Battle of the Bog and then the cruel Valley of Pain. They'll be awarded
04:11three points for first place, two points for second place and one point for third. The points are added
04:16together and the top family qualifies for the semifinals. The bottom two families will have to
04:21face it off in the Eliminator to see who else gets a semifinal place.
04:31Nothing says family bonding like dragging your loved one through a disgusting bog,
04:35and this is the only race where you're pretty much guaranteed to lose a shoe
04:38and your dignity. This is Battle of the Bog.
04:43This is a three family relay race where two members of each family start Battle of the Bog
04:47with a cold, watery cargo neck crawl, followed by an A-frame climb. From here,
04:52the family pairs must work together as they begin to navigate the muddy bog. A series of under and
04:58over logs of different heights and sizes await before plunging back into the deepest, muddiest,
05:03longest and most draining part of the course. Next, they have to climb the ladder before sprinting to
05:08the finish line. When the family pair are standing on the pallet, the next two from the family can start the
05:13race following the same route. The clock only stops when all four family members are standing on the palace.
05:21Any concerns? No, the bog is nervous to meet the burns. Never mind, not the other way around.
05:25I'll keep going because I have to face them three lads if I don't. I think the nerves have kind of gone
05:31out the window now. It's more confident and excited and ready to get the job done. We're going to give it a go.
05:36Keelan and Cormac will do the damage and the girls will bring it home.
05:40We like muck and we're used to that. We all grew up and doing that there. So hopefully we can push
05:45through it and get through. Ready to go in purple are Cathy and Sean Smith. In pink,
05:52Paul and Anne Byrne. And in red, Cormac and Caelan McKenna.
05:59Three, two, one.
06:01Go Cathy, go.
06:02Referee Paul O'Donovan gets us underway. This is battle of the bog. There's an early lead for the
06:08McKenna boys, followed by the Burns wearing pink. The Smith family in purple. So this is one of these
06:15A frames. Up they go. Soaking wet already. And out front, Cormac and Caelan McKenna. They've made a
06:21very quick start. Andrew Trimble will be delighted. So you get a perfect idea of just how tricky the
06:29terrain is here. But this is easy compared to what's coming later. But Cormac and Caelan McKenna
06:34are making this look straightforward. It's anything but. The remaining members of the family waiting
06:39back at the start line. Come on, yeah. Andrew is very calm. Now it starts to get really muddy and sludgy.
06:49TV Fitz can't believe it. I'll tell you what, the McKenna's have started very well. But the Byrne family
06:54and the Smith family are a bit stuck. It's understandable. So they are very nearly at the
07:03finish line. Cormac and Caelan McKenna. Get yourself up first. Get yourself up first. Michael
07:08Darragh McCauley working closely with the Byrne family. So that is impressive. They have a sprint
07:13down to the finishing talent. Cormac and Caelan are there. And off go Sharon and Colleen McKenna.
07:22They said beforehand that they like the muck. And the Smith family and the Byrne family are not liking
07:28this one bit. Keep moving. So that's Colleen McKenna. Moving well. So Anne Byrne with her son Paul.
07:45That's mom Sharon McKenna. There's three mommies in this race. There's Cathy Smith. That's Sean with her.
07:55And there's a bit of a traffic jam here. But there's no issues at all for the McKenna family.
08:01They are flying. And Sharon McKenna picking a line. She's happy with it. Now she's gone past Paul
08:06and Anne Byrne. Lapping the Byrne family. Can she lap the Smith family as well?
08:13So Davey's staying calm at the moment with the Smith family. And Sharon McKenna just getting stronger
08:20and stronger. Her daughter Colleen is ahead of her. Her two sons are up at the finishing
08:24palette. But this is really hard for the Byrnes. For Paul and Anne.
08:30So Michael Dara McCauley will be important here for the Byrne family.
08:36So that's a familiar sight isn't it? We see people being dragged along the top of the bog.
08:40That was Cathy Smith or that is Cathy Smith with her son Sean.
08:44So Anne wants to try and get up. It's easier said than done. Colleen McKenna has gone past the Smith family.
08:56And her mom Sharon about to do exactly the same. So the McKenna's have left both families now in this race.
09:02Just slowing down a little bit for Sharon. Colleen is just ahead of her. This is the toughest part
09:09of the course. Every inch of it. Every centimeter of it is tough. But Andrew Trimble very very impressed
09:16with what he's seen. But it's a huge battle. It's a grind for the other families. Anne Byrne has
09:22Paul just ahead of her. She just won't give up though. She is not giving up.
09:31So there's the McKenna's in red. But they've lost some time. The Smith family, Cathy and Sean have
09:37gained ground. We saw the McKenna's lap them a little while ago. But the Smiths have hit back.
09:42The McKenna's though still a lap ahead. So this is really tough for Anne and Paul Byrne.
09:51It's really tough for everybody. Cathy and Sean Smith from County Louth. There is Sharon McKenna
09:59from Monaghan. Colleen McKenna has got up that ladder. About to be joined by her mom Sharon. But
10:06Colleen makes it to the finish line. That's an impressive performance. She's only 17 years of age.
10:11Three out of the four there. About to be joined by Sharon. But Paul and Anne Byrne are still battling away.
10:20So here is Sharon McKenna about to finish out battle of the ball. This is some performance
10:26by the McKenna family. All four are up on that pallet while the other two families haven't even started
10:31their second lap. You're not going to be able to slug your way through. You're going to have to
10:36use your legs. So well Michael Dara McCauley, this is his first experience of this. To see just how
10:43demanding it is. There is Sean Smith dragging mom Cathy along the surface of the bog. The barns are still
10:50battling away with it. So Davey wants second place. They are about to get up that ladder. Cathy and Sean
10:57Smith. So there's Paul and Anne Byrne. And here comes Sean and Cathy Smith about to finish their
11:05first lap. The other members of their family can't see what's going on here. So they have to be told
11:09to start. And it's Mark and Adam Smith who start. You saw John Byrne in pink there. He was dying to get
11:15going. It's just a waiting game for them. But not for Adam and Mark Smith. They're underway. And this is
11:20the second lap for the Smith family. Just keep moving. Keep moving. The Burns, John and Jack waiting
11:25down at the start line. They are not involved in the race yet because Paul and Anne can't get to the
11:30finish line. No matter how hard they try. That's it. Just grind it out. Grind it out. And it is a grind.
11:37It's a war of attrition. Adam is 19. Mark is 15. They had to wait down at the start line.
11:45But they're in second place. Keep going. Keep going. So then McKenna is waiting for the other
11:53families to finish it out. Davey said to Cathy and Sean he wants it second place. This is what they
12:00have at the moment. And the Burns are still stuck. Get through them. And now Adam and Mark. Well,
12:08they're very close with Paul and Anne Byrne, aren't they? Get out of the light. And Michael
12:13Darren McCauley wants them to pick a different line and get away from his family members. And
12:17that all is very up close and personal, isn't it? Grab the other side. Come on. Keep walking.
12:22I understand that Adam and Mark just want to get this done. Now they've moved away from Paul and Anne,
12:26who are very definitely stuck in the bar. There's a little bit of movement there. Paul is doing
12:31everything he can. A reminder that the Burns are still on their first lap. John and Jack waiting down at
12:37the start line. But Adam and Mark, this is the second lap for the Smith family. And they're about to claim
12:42second place. Three out of the four up there. They're just waiting for Mark to join them.
12:48And it'll be second place for the Smith family from County Loud. And that is what they've claimed right
12:54now. The drama continues though for the Byrne family, for Anne and Paul. The finish line is
13:01still a fair bit away. So Paul is trying absolutely anything and everything to help his mother.
13:11But you know what? She is still battling with this. She's still fighting.
13:15Push through. Push through. Push through. Stand me up.
13:18All right. Okay.
13:19Just keep moving. Keep moving. Come on, Anne.
13:27That's it. That's it, Paul. Yeah, come on. Get ahead. Get ahead.
13:28Come on.
13:32This is the last of the slog.
13:33Yes.
13:39Come on. You're doing great. Let's stop.
13:41oh my god i couldn't get up couldn't get me feet up couldn't pull them out
13:52couldn't couldn't move never ever thought it'd be that bad horrendous so finally paul and ann are
13:59away from that dreaded bog they'll never want to see it again but it's been a brilliant performance
14:03by the two of them in particular and she got stuck there time after time but she didn't give up
14:08there's no other grandparents on the show that's doing what she did and like the grandkids will be
14:12there's no other grandparent going to do they'll be delighted to see their granny on there
14:17and here they come ann and paul burn getting a great reception from the other family members who
14:32have finished this out and now finished and john and jack burn can get going
14:36yeah it's not in em it's not in my mother's dna it's not in our dna to give up we're gonna get
14:47through it no matter what i'd say the toughest part was the last bit just before the ladder to
14:56get onto the bridge so i must have got stuck same spot as ann because all of a sudden just
15:00no my body shut down like it wasn't at me me yeah just regroup go again maybe think of a different
15:07strategy for the next challenge and uh as i said we're just going till the wheels fall off we ain't
15:12done yeah and there's the point on the board as john and jack finish the race burn family i mean
15:20the bog's no joke we know that well done on getting through it i know right now you probably don't feel
15:25too great because you're exhausted no i feel great that was easy you know but it's very tough
15:30no very tough but i'm very proud of my mind get through that so no matter how tough it was just kept
15:35going so it was an unbelievable achievement like like if they're aware and like these calorie
15:39counters would say they're on a million like they were hacking it like um and again never gave up
15:45like slogged it out to the end so it was amazing oh it was very tough it was right a lot higher than i
15:50thought it would be i actually couldn't get out of it only for sean sean was just amazing really was
15:56amazing the bog is the bog the bog is the bog so it is suit some doesn't suit others second is good
16:03mckenna family it has to feel good does it definitely feel good just had the power on keep going
16:09it went better than planned i think um luckily we got away well start and then started to get
16:15stickier at the end but we were both sort of neck and neck where we stayed each other so if we needed
16:18help we were there for each other so i would definitely happy with attitude andrew are you so
16:24proud of your family oh they did brilliant they absolutely smashed it yeah oh mckenna's well done
16:28andrew congratulations a flying star to the day there's fish and then there's the mckenna's
16:34now let's take a look at the scoreboard the mckenna's are in first place with three points
16:40the smiths are in second place with two points and the burns are in last place with one point
16:46i'm in the thick of beer everybody knows they know me where it snows i skidding and welcome back to the
17:16back to ireland's fittest family it's the first of our quarterfinals here at hell and back and before the break we saw all of our families fight their way through battle of the bog
17:23andrew trimble's mckenna's came out on top as they put in an extraordinary performance davie smith's family got stuck in the mud as they came in second place but michael dara's burn family got really stuck in the mud and came in third place
17:38life is full of ups and downs and it's always handy to have a little safety net we decided to take those life lessons and turn it into an event this is valley of pain
17:45this course will open up a whole world of pain for our quarterfinalists it's valley of pain our family start on straw bales then they face an exhausting run along a winding pathway
17:52next it's a series of ups and downs before tackling two angled walls one is three meters high and the next 3.6
17:59life is full of ups and downs life is full of ups and downs and it's always handy to have a little safety net
18:03we decided to take those life lessons and turn it into an event this is valley of pain
18:07this course will open up a whole world of pain for our quarterfinalists it's valley of pain
18:11water and we will be able to get the back to the back of the river and we will get the back to the back of the water
18:14and we will get the back to the back of the river and the back of the river and the back of our road
18:17is three meters high and the next three point six meters high after that a run down to the first of
18:23two cargo nets one they must climb over and one they have to crawl under to finish all four family members have to climb up to the top of the Irish table it's 2.4 meters high
18:35The clock stops when all four are standing behind the rope
18:38and the fastest family will score those vital three points.
18:45Since the heats, the coaches have been working with their families
18:48to get fighting fit for the quarterfinals.
18:52Michael Darragh organised a fun day out for his family, the Burns, from Dublin.
18:57The Burns family, all very strong, fit, athletic,
19:01but there's a bit of that kind of balance and coordination
19:03that might be needed.
19:07Welcome to my humble abode.
19:09He said he hasn't done it before,
19:11but he's definitely got a few secret sessions in.
19:13Lift our legs with our core, push back,
19:16legs go to the outside.
19:18Yeah, once they're upside down.
19:21I think my ma, again, always excels.
19:24She's obviously nervous getting started, getting going,
19:27but she knows it's a bit of fun,
19:28and she jumps into it and has a good crack.
19:31Michael, I think he wants giants
19:33into the circus.
19:36Yes, really good.
19:38Look, we had a great day today.
19:39Definitely learned about balance, about core.
19:42Hopefully we can take some of these learnings
19:44into the next day
19:45and blow the competition around.
19:50Michael Darragh and the Burns family,
19:52here we go, a valley of pain.
19:54I think we have it's us.
19:55We have our strengths.
19:55We know how we're going to do.
19:56We know how we're going to get up the first one.
19:58Now we're going to get up the second wall.
19:59We're good to go.
20:00Anne, the knee's bandaged up.
20:02Yeah.
20:02Is it all right?
20:03Yeah.
20:04Grand, not a badder.
20:05Just a bit bruised, a bit swollen, but grand.
20:08I banged it off something.
20:10I twisted it.
20:11I don't really know.
20:13I just, it's bruised and swollen.
20:16But I'm not worried about it with my knee.
20:19I'll just do what I can.
20:21You need to be careful for it.
20:22There's actually a lot of running in this.
20:23There's a lot of climbing.
20:25So it's just, we're going to have to keep an eye on it.
20:27The docs, they were like,
20:28listen, we can call this here.
20:30You know what I mean?
20:30And then she was like,
20:31no, strap me up, throw me back in there.
20:33I'm ready to go.
20:34So yeah, she's fired up
20:36and she's going to get through it, you know?
20:37Lining up for the Byrne family.
20:40Jack and Anne.
20:43And John and Paul.
20:45Three, two, one.
20:48This is Valley of Pain.
20:51The Byrne family finished last in event one,
20:54the Battle of the Bog.
20:55They need a good display here to avoid the Eliminator.
21:00So it's a gentle start.
21:02Perfect, Anne, that's perfect.
21:03Keep it going.
21:04I've heard that mum Anne is strapped up the left knee.
21:07took a little bit of damage there.
21:09You can see that strapping.
21:10But Anne is moving well.
21:14So up and over that bank.
21:18And there is Jack Byrne.
21:19He had a go at that first wall at three meters high.
21:22They're really designed for the families to help each other.
21:26But Jack won't let this wall beat them.
21:28Wow.
21:28Just as I said, they're meant to help each other.
21:30He's done it himself.
21:31Brilliant.
21:32So they need a big performance here.
21:35Yep.
21:36Perfect, perfect.
21:36And they've got two up there.
21:37That's Paul up joining his cousin Jack.
21:39And they want Anne and John to get a move on.
21:42A minute and a half now on the clock.
21:45Here's Anne.
21:46And John is going to help her up.
21:48And the two lads will pull her to the top.
21:52She's experienced a lot of those kind of things today.
21:54But is still battling away.
21:56And still showing up for her family.
21:58Let's go.
21:58Let's go.
21:58So this wall, three meters high.
22:02The next one is a little bit higher.
22:03Let's go.
22:04And here it is.
22:053.6 meters high.
22:06So whatever works.
22:11They can climb up whatever way they want.
22:13So Paul is going to be lifted to the top or pushed to the top now.
22:18There he is.
22:18Let's go.
22:19Let's go.
22:19Two and a half minutes.
22:20The Byrne family will set the target for the other two families to try and beat.
22:25Lads, you need to get full extension on this.
22:26Full extension.
22:27There you go.
22:27There you go.
22:28So there's Anne up again.
22:30The knee is holding up well.
22:31Next to you, Jack.
22:32You're last.
22:32So Anne is over the far side.
22:39Here come the other two, lads.
22:45So Anne heading away towards the cargo net.
22:48Perfect.
22:48Let's go.
22:49Let's go.
22:51So they're away from those walls.
22:53And the families have to climb over this cargo net.
22:58And as you can see, there's a lot of movements as the others take it on.
23:05Let's go.
23:08And Anne is very nearly at the end of that first net.
23:13And Jack is staying back to help out.
23:15And John and Paul going under this cargo net.
23:19It's the last little bit.
23:20Back on ground here.
23:21Let's go.
23:21Anne has got through there.
23:26So they've got to crawl under the next net.
23:27Let's go.
23:28And Jack is just holding that up for her to make it that little bit easier.
23:32So she's picked a line she's happy with.
23:34You can see there are ridges underneath it.
23:38So all that's left for the Byrne family is the Irish table.
23:43That's 2.4 metres high.
23:48Come on, man.
23:49Get up.
23:50That is hard on the knees, isn't it?
23:51Crawling along underneath it.
23:54That's John Byrne.
23:56He's very nearly made it up and he needs a bit of a hoosh.
23:58That's a technical term.
24:00But it works.
24:02So Anne and Paul together.
24:05Get up, get up, get up.
24:06Give me Paul.
24:07Paul, give me a hand.
24:08Let's go, let's go.
24:08So Paul have been told to give a bit of a hand there.
24:12So here comes Anne.
24:14What a day she's had.
24:15What a hero she's been for her family.
24:17They've gone through five minutes now.
24:20Get my hand, get my hand behind.
24:21And they all have to stand up there.
24:23They have.
24:23Clock stops at 5.16.
24:25Just how good that is.
24:26We'll find out.
24:27Sorry.
24:29What's going on, lads?
24:31There's always.
24:32There's always.
24:32Good job, Joe.
24:34Good job, Jack.
24:35Anne, come over here beside me.
24:37Mind you, can lean on me now for a second.
24:38Come on.
24:39You're an absolute superstar.
24:41How are you feeling?
24:43Very tired.
24:43I know.
24:44I don't blame you.
24:45It's not easy.
24:46No.
24:47No.
24:47Not in slightest.
24:48Very hard.
24:49It's quite heartwarming to see your three boys, you know, the whole way through taking care of you, but especially at the end there.
24:55Yeah.
24:55Oh, they're very good.
24:56Yeah.
24:58It's amazing.
24:59Like, I mean, where would you get it?
25:00You won't see many other mammies doing this.
25:05Next up, it was Davy's turn to gather the Smiths for some serious training.
25:09I bought the Smiths here today.
25:11I wanted to put them through hell.
25:12I wanted to really test them mentally.
25:14I was going to kill Davy, yeah.
25:16I thought we were just going to come down for a little bit of a chat and that, but I didn't realize we were going to do a session.
25:21The biggest thing for me is to work as a unit.
25:24To get everybody to perform to the best of their ability is massive.
25:27Sometimes that's not always going as fast as you can go.
25:30Sometimes it's getting the best out of someone that's struggling.
25:34Yeah, I've learned a lot of how we work as a team.
25:36And myself, Davy, done the head session today to see how we work together.
25:40At the beginning, we set off without mam and we found out then, we realized then we had to drag her with us.
25:48And coming to the end then, we got in 15, 14 seconds quicker, I think it was.
25:53So we proved that we can do it.
25:54So we just need to stick at it now.
25:56We tested them.
25:57We tested them today and I think we definitely made improvements.
26:00I thought it was a good day all around, yeah.
26:02Davy and the Smith family, here we go.
26:10Valley of Pain.
26:11Now, Davy, you have a little bit of an advantage with Valley of Pain because you've been here before, so you know the setup.
26:17We're looking forward to this.
26:19There's a bit more than just going into a bog running on this.
26:22There will be a bit of strategy.
26:24Very important to get the walls right and how you get up and who you get up.
26:28So we have a bit of talking to do on that and see if we can get it right.
26:32You're good there, right?
26:33He'll get there from there.
26:34Look at the reach.
26:36Yeah, sorry.
26:36Yeah, he would.
26:37Look at the reach.
26:37He's going to get there, right?
26:38Woo!
26:39My first reaction was, wow.
26:42High walls, cargo nets.
26:45Yeah, it's going to be a tough one for me, not for the boys.
26:48Yeah, the three of us are going to try to help mam along the hallway and pull her along so I get the fastest time as we can.
26:52Lining up for the Smith family are Adam and Cathy, Mark and Sean.
26:59Three, two, one.
27:03The Smith family from County Louth were second in event one today.
27:075.16 is the time set down by the Burns.
27:11So after finishing second in the first event, they need the fastest time here to avoid the Eliminator.
27:22So Cathy been helped along by two of her sons.
27:28So approaching half a minute, there's Cathy and this is the first of the wall, three meters high.
27:35So teamwork, as we have seen, absolutely vital here.
27:44So the aim of the game is to get Cathy up to the top of the first wall.
27:51And whatever way you get up there, it doesn't matter.
27:54Stand anywhere, stand everywhere.
27:56And Cathy is now up at the top of that first wall.
27:59There's Adam Smith.
28:00He made it to the top of the zone.
28:02He's got a strapping on his left wrist.
28:03So they are away from, just about to be away, all four of them from the first wall.
28:11The second one is higher.
28:14So 5.16, the time to beat after the Burns family were first to go.
28:22So they were pretty slick and quick at the first wall.
28:26So Cathy is almost at the top of the second one.
28:29And she's come back down and Davey is sounding and looking very stressed.
28:35They are losing time here.
28:37They started the race so well, but this is costing them priceless seconds.
28:45So Cathy gets away from the second wall and she's up to the first of the cargo nets.
28:49That wall is 0.6 of a meter higher than the other one, but it makes all the difference, doesn't it?
29:02Or can.
29:03And it did there.
29:04And the Smith boys need to get a move on.
29:08Cathy's on the first cargo net.
29:10Crawl over this.
29:11And now all four of them are there and they need to make up some time.
29:18That was a big leap and a fall, but everything's okay.
29:23So Cathy has got a little bit stuck.
29:27And it's perfectly understandable because this net, it's not at all stable.
29:33We've seen people try and run over it, crawl over it.
29:37It really is whatever you're comfortable with.
29:40So Cathy Smith is very nearly there.
29:44They still have one more cargo net to deal with that.
29:49They have to crawl under this and as we have seen, there are ridges, but that's good teamwork as the net is held up.
29:56Davey's not impressed at all, just kind of punching the air.
29:59So, approaching four minutes now, the Irish table is 2.4 meters high.
30:08Davey wants them to really push it now.
30:12And this, well, getting up that Irish table, it's much harder than having to climb up a wall because there's no place to put your feet.
30:20Unless you stand on somebody.
30:23Where you get pushed up.
30:25Davey doesn't look impressed at all.
30:27Hang on, hang on, hang on.
30:28They're going to beat the time set down by the Byrne family.
30:33But we've still got the McKennas left to go.
30:36And the Smith family from County Louth complete the task in 4 minutes and 23 seconds.
30:40They're the leaders now.
30:42Davey, that felt fast.
30:45No, it's not fast enough.
30:46We made too many mistakes.
30:47We made two mistakes out there.
30:48Can't do it.
30:49Did they give an unreal effort?
30:50They gave everything.
30:50They were absolutely brilliant.
30:52Absolutely brilliant effort-wise, but you can't make mistakes.
30:56Every day is a learning there.
30:57But, not bad.
30:59They did okay.
31:00But I know we could have knocked maybe 30 seconds off that time.
31:04Cathy, it's not easy.
31:06But you didn't give up.
31:07You were ahead of the lads.
31:08You were straight down to the cargo nets.
31:10You took them on as best that you could.
31:12How are you?
31:14Battered and bruised.
31:15It was really tough.
31:16It was tough.
31:17That net, it's very, you're very unstable on it.
31:20I was very proud of my mum because she's obviously years ahead of us and she's still keeping up with us and playing on and trying to stick with us.
31:27So, she's the most proud of my mum.
31:28Yeah, we've done it.
31:30Done the best I could.
31:31And the boys were great, pushing me up and pulling me and dragging me and they were brilliant.
31:37They were just, their effort was absolutely brilliant.
31:39I'm so proud of them.
31:40Can't fault the effort.
31:41Everyone gave 100% and it was brilliant, that team effort, yeah.
31:44Finally, Andrew and the McKennas made a day out of it.
31:48Yeah, I brought the McKennas down here to Monaghan Rugby Club.
31:51I wanted to introduce them to rugby.
31:53We're going to do a wee time trial.
31:55Andrew's very passionate about rugby, as you can tell.
31:58As you hit that cone, I'm going to say to you, Donnica or Davie Fitz.
32:06Nice killing, very good.
32:08Mummy's tackling was a bit comical, to be honest, but she's not going to have a career in rugby anyway, so.
32:14Yeah, good stuff.
32:18Andrew's a very patient coach.
32:19He's a relaxed guy and he brings that into us too.
32:23We're confident in him and I know he's confident in us.
32:26Come on, let's go, come on back.
32:28It feels like they're so good, they're so strong, they're so fit.
32:32There's a bit of pace about them as well, competitive.
32:35They tick every box.
32:36McKennas on three.
32:37One, two, three, McKennas!
32:39Oh yeah, definitely think today helped.
32:40It's a wee bit more team bonding, getting to know our coach, Andrew, and good for the family to even be, spending more time together.
32:47Well, well, well, Andrew, McKennas, you must be feeling quite smug coming into Valley of Pain.
32:56No, I'd say we're just going to say our very best, that's all I'd think.
32:59See, this is nice now.
33:00You sound lovely and modest, that's a good way to go about this.
33:04How are you feeling after this morning though?
33:05Oh, we're definitely happy with how we performed in the bog, but we don't want to get big heads and hopefully at least we'll get through this one as well without fighting the Eliminator.
33:14It's up to us just to do the event as fast as we can, but not fumble, not make any mistakes.
33:19As long as they pace themselves, they don't blow up or they don't, you know, technically they're able to get over the walls and up onto the platform.
33:26It's only things that, like little things that could go wrong, could hamper us at this stage.
33:31I think the pressure definitely is on because we want to get home this evening and out the Eliminator.
33:37Ready to go for the McKennas are Sharon and Colleen, Cormac and Caelan.
33:44Three, two, one.
33:48Well, the question here is can the McKennas make it two wins out of two for Andrew Trimble.
33:54If they can, they would soar into the semi-finals.
34:01They were brilliant in the first event.
34:05Will they be able to back it up and win again?
34:09So that is Sharon McKenna at the back of the pack there.
34:14Two boys setting the pace.
34:16And pacing here, important.
34:18That was really quick.
34:19So let's see how they do at the first of the two walls.
34:27There's one up there now.
34:30But there's a clear strategy, isn't there?
34:33And it has very nearly got them away from wall number one.
34:37So that is Sharon.
34:38Mom Sharon being held to the top.
34:40And there she is.
34:45So a minute and 15 seconds.
34:49Caelan is the last to get up to the top.
34:53And here they are at the second wall.
34:55It's 60 centimetres higher.
34:57Doesn't seem like a lot, but it does make a difference.
35:00So they've got one up there.
35:01Andrew Trimble is just quiet encouragement from the coach.
35:04And then put your back up against it, Caelan.
35:07And then getting his shoulders.
35:07Yeah, well done.
35:08Good stuff.
35:09But you can hear that strategy again.
35:11Same again, Colleen.
35:13It's all very cool and calm and collected.
35:18Yeah, one arm each, no?
35:19This feels like a well-oiled machine, doesn't it?
35:22It's really slick.
35:23So they're away from the wall.
35:25Not even two minutes done.
35:27If we had a split time from obstacle to obstacle,
35:30they would be well in front.
35:32And there's two minutes now.
35:33Oh, nice, lads.
35:34This is the cargo net over the top of it.
35:36That was some leap from Colleen.
35:38She nearly did that in one go.
35:41If anything, they're speeding up.
35:45So Sharon is last, losing a tiny bit of time.
35:48But they seem to have a fair bit of time to play with.
35:52A GAA mad family.
35:56Well, all the members of their club back home in Monaghan
35:58will be very proud with the way they have performed here.
36:01Hold it up this side.
36:04Okay, so Sharon McKenna is losing a little bit of time.
36:07She's caught in that second cargo net.
36:10Yeah, nice, yeah.
36:11Come on, yeah.
36:13Let's go, Sharon.
36:14So, Andrew dividing his time, kind of splitting the family up.
36:18So, Sharon's still underneath that net.
36:22One out of the four up to the top of the Irish table.
36:25Look at this time.
36:26Not even three minutes.
36:26Here comes Colleen.
36:27And she's just standing on her brother.
36:30She's using her brother as a table.
36:34There's more instructions from Andrew Trimble.
36:37Well done, Sharon.
36:38Good stuff.
36:38So, Sharon is the third of the McKenna family
36:41to approach the top of the Irish table.
36:44This has been quite a performance.
36:46They were brilliant in the first event today.
36:48And they've backed it up.
36:49They've dealt with the pressure.
36:50And this is some showing.
36:52A force to be reckoned with.
36:53The McKenna family.
36:54They win.
36:55Three minutes and 20 seconds.
36:58I actually think if I blinked, I was going to miss that.
37:00You were so quick.
37:01Hopefully, we're quick enough, though.
37:03Andrew, I know this is your first time experiencing
37:06Valley of Pain and Ireland's Fittest Family in general.
37:09But you have to feel a little bit smug right now.
37:12Outragegiously smug is where I'm going.
37:13I wish Danica was here to see you, actually, as well.
37:16But, yeah, they did unbelievably well.
37:18They're just class.
37:19They're just all amazing athletes.
37:21Good crack as well.
37:22They're down there.
37:23They've just got a nice approach.
37:25Even before, they're laughing and giggling and slagging each other.
37:28So, yeah, they went really well.
37:32Over to the scoreboard.
37:33And after both events, the McKenna's remain in first place with six points.
37:37The Smiths are in second place with four points.
37:40And the Burns, they're in last place with two points.
37:43So, that means the McKenna's will be going straight through to the semifinals,
37:47leaving the Smiths and the Burns to fight it out in the dreaded eliminator
37:51for this week's last place in the semifinals.
37:54You're nerdy, dear.
37:57Come on.
38:00Get up, get up.
38:01Get up.
38:02Get up.
38:02Get up.
38:02Get up.
38:02Up.
38:03Welcome back to Ireland's Fittest Family.
38:18It's time for our first eliminator of the quarterfinals,
38:21where Davey Smith family are going to be taking on Michael Daris Burns.
38:25One family is going to edge closer to glory,
38:28and the other, well, they'll be stuck in the mud and out of the competition.
38:32So, while Michael Daris and Davey have their two families still in the competition,
38:37that's going to change very soon once Paul the Ref starts this eliminator.
38:42Tonight's eliminator is no walk in the park.
38:45It begins with a sprint to collect a 30-kilogram log,
38:49which they must run with together around the field.
38:52Then they face a relentless series of A-frames and walls.
38:55If that isn't enough, they have to navigate a tricky balance beam
38:59before the three-meter walls await.
39:01These are followed by a plunge into a freezing ice bath.
39:05Next, it's a climb up onto a platform and down a cargo net-covered ladder.
39:09Finally, the ramp awaits.
39:11The first family to the top of the ramp wins a place in next week's semifinal.
39:15The losing family is eliminated.
39:17Knowing that we've already completed an eliminator
39:22is definitely going to give us some sort of confidence boost
39:24and hopefully push us through to win it.
39:27Stand up, stand tall, set.
39:30Down for five, four, three, two, one.
39:32As usual, I'm nervous going into the eliminator,
39:36but when I start, I'll just go.
39:41Look, it is long.
39:43Especially Anne's had a bit of a knock.
39:44I think we saw that earlier.
39:45But I think just stick with it until the very end.
39:48I think we should be in the mix here.
39:49Let's go.
39:50Let's go.
39:51Small bit more.
39:52I'm not going to be negative about it.
39:54I'm going to be positive.
39:55We'll get through this.
39:57We'll do it.
39:57We'll smash it.
39:58Right there, right there, right there, right there.
40:00And stop.
40:01Let's stretch.
40:01I think it might come down to Mammy versus Mammy, yeah,
40:04but I think it's going to be a battle probably
40:08right to the very end of the ramp.
40:10Photo finish.
40:13Ready to go for the Smith family in purple
40:15are Mark, Cathy, Adam and Sean.
40:19And for the Burns in pink, it's Paul, Anne, John and Jack.
40:24Three, two, one.
40:28Loads of pressure on both families here
40:30as they begin the Eliminator.
40:33That log weighs 30 kilograms
40:34and the Smiths have a bit of a lead already.
40:37Just wonder how Anne Byrne is feeling.
40:39She still has that strapping on her left knee.
40:41Jogging, lads.
40:42Come on!
40:43So the Smiths opening up a lead for Davy Fitz.
40:47Paul, dropping it in the mulch.
40:48You're nearly there.
40:49Paul, dropping it in the mulch.
40:51So Davy down there waiting for them at that drop zone
40:53where they can get rid of the log.
40:56Here they go at the walls.
40:58These are the easy ones in inverted commas.
41:01Get over that wall!
41:01Go, go, go, go!
41:03Next one, next one, next one!
41:04And an A-frame.
41:05Here come the Byrne family from Dublin.
41:09The Smith family from Laudita.
41:10An all-Leinster clash for a place in the semi-final of Ireland's fittest family.
41:17So it's still early on in this race.
41:19There'll be no panic from the Byrne family.
41:21So a reminder there in pink and in purple, it's the Smith family.
41:28We saw Cathy, Mum Cathy, going over that A-frame.
41:33The balance beams are always a very testing part of these challenges.
41:41The Smith family have now two on there.
41:43You've been going at 100 miles an hour and you have to calm everything down
41:47and every step counts.
41:49Here come the Byrne family.
41:50They're not that far behind.
41:52One, two, one, two.
41:54So Davey just counting that out with Cathy.
41:56And Cathy's come off the beams just to go back to the start.
41:59So Paul taking great care with his mum and what a hero she's been today.
42:04So the Smith family have two away from the balance beams
42:07and they're up to this wall.
42:10Three metres high.
42:14We heard one of the Byrne family say that the Smith family are not that far ahead
42:18and they're not really.
42:18So Anne seemed to jar her knee there a little bit.
42:23That would be a concern for her.
42:25Hold my head, hold my head.
42:26Hold my head, hold my head.
42:27So while the Smith family not doing great at that wall, the really high one,
42:32here come the Byrne family.
42:33Catch, catch, catch, catch.
42:34Stay on a good leg.
42:35Michael Darrow will keep them all together and keep them very much in the zone
42:39because Cathy is losing time.
42:40Cathy Smith is in trouble at that balance beam.
42:43And here come the Byrne family.
42:45All four of them there now.
42:47Wow, this is something else.
42:50And they weren't that far ahead, were they?
42:52And the Byrnes have caught right up.
42:54Remember, Michael Darrow did work on balance earlier on the competition
42:57when Anne has gone off there and she seemed to land heavily on that left leg
43:00which jarred her knee again.
43:01Let's go, let's go.
43:02Just keep walking.
43:03Keep walking.
43:04So she's gone back down to the start.
43:06Cathy Smith is very nearly there and she's got away now.
43:08So she's away from the balance beam and the Smiths are trying to open up a lead again.
43:14Oh, there's a fall by Cathy.
43:16She's okay.
43:18This is all a bit chaotic now.
43:20Anne is in trouble.
43:21Anne Byrne.
43:22Stand up.
43:23Get your belly up.
43:24But we know, we saw it in the Vogue earlier on, she would keep going
43:27until she can't move anymore.
43:29So Cathy is trying to move up to the top of that three meters high wall.
43:36And Cathy has done that.
43:37And down she goes on the other side.
43:40So the Bourne family, well, there's Paul come in to help.
43:44So they've won at the top of the wall.
43:47And here is Cathy Smith at this ice bath.
43:50It's not everybody's cup of tea.
43:52It's very, very cold.
43:54Some people just don't like the water.
43:56But look at this.
43:58It's kind of messy from both families.
44:00But are the Bourne's about to overtake the Smith family?
44:05Cathy is at this water.
44:07She goes down underneath the water.
44:09No, she's come back up again.
44:10Okay.
44:11That's okay.
44:15The Smith family on the right in purple with Davy Fitz.
44:18They're there losing time at this wall.
44:20They had a big lead earlier on.
44:22We heard the Bourne's talking to each other saying,
44:24look, they're not that far ahead.
44:25And they've caught right up.
44:26Now, the Smith family have got away from the wall.
44:31So they have the lead again.
44:32And Cathy, well done.
44:33She's got underneath the water and under those tires and out the other side.
44:36Go, go, go, go.
44:37Pull, pull, pull.
44:38So what way is this going to finish?
44:41Get them up.
44:41Whatever we have to do.
44:42Get them up.
44:43Get them up.
44:44Get them up.
44:44The tension builds.
44:45The pressure grows.
44:47Let's go.
44:47Round there.
44:47Round there.
44:48Round there.
44:48So much at stake.
44:49And the Bourne family, they're away from that wall.
44:53And here they are at the ice bath.
44:55The Smith family still lead.
44:58So they're up at that platform.
44:59And now they have to go down that ladder with the cargo net.
45:02So the Bourne family, they're all together.
45:04And they're very nearly away from the ice bath.
45:07And indeed, now they are.
45:09So the Smith family getting a look at the ramp.
45:14This is Mark Smith first to take it on.
45:16That's a brilliant leap from Mark Smith.
45:18Now here come the Bourne family.
45:20They're at the platform.
45:20Another successful attempt from the Smiths.
45:26So they've got two out of four up there.
45:28That's superb.
45:29But the Bourne's are closing.
45:30Michael Dara-Macaulay with them all the way.
45:32And Jack Bourne is at the ramp.
45:34And he's had a go at that.
45:35But he's come straight back down.
45:38Kathy Smith failing as well.
45:40She's going to have another go.
45:42The Smith family have led right from the start of this eliminator.
45:45But the Bourne's just keep at their heels.
45:47They won't give up.
45:48John Bourne on the right.
45:49He's got up there.
45:50So they've got one out of the four up at the top of the ramp.
45:53Jack for the Bourne family has taken his runners off.
45:56And well, that didn't work either.
45:58He's come straight back down.
46:00So Kathy Smith on the left there.
46:02Kathy, she would be the third up there.
46:04And Jack has got up for the Bourne family, has he?
46:07They're trying to drag him up there.
46:08Let's John up there with him.
46:11This is really hard to watch.
46:13Everybody is absolutely exhausted and soaked in the skin.
46:16And Jack has got up there.
46:18So it's two for the Bourne family, two for the Smith family.
46:20Can it be three now for the Smith family?
46:22No, Kathy's come back down again.
46:25And another fail from the Bourne family.
46:28Just trying to get any kind of grip on that ramp.
46:32It's soaking.
46:33Here we go.
46:34Three for the Bourne family.
46:35Is it very nearly?
46:36It very nearly is.
46:38Oh my word.
46:39What a battle.
46:40They've got three up there.
46:40It's just about getting Ann Bourne up.
46:42Ann just trying to calm down, steady down.
46:44There's three up for the Smiths now as well.
46:46This is incredible.
46:47It's going to be a photo finish.
46:49Kathy Smith, can she get to the top?
46:51Ann has come back down for the Bourne family.
46:52And Kathy's gone as well.
46:54It's all down to the two mothers here.
46:57Can the rest of their family drag either of them to the top to win a place in the semi-final?
47:02JB telling Kathy Smith just to calm down.
47:04Here she goes.
47:04Kathy Smith and Kathy, they've got her.
47:06Have they?
47:07No.
47:07She slipped again.
47:08They're holding onto the front of her shirt trying to get her up.
47:10Ann Bourne tries again and she's just exhausted.
47:12She can't get up there.
47:13Kathy Smith is pulled to the top.
47:15And the Smiths family are true.
47:17They've won the Eliminator.
47:19They are into the semi-finals.
47:21Ann gave absolutely everything that she could.
47:24Like every last drop that she had.
47:26I'm very proud of my mother for getting this far anyway.
47:30Ann is an absolutely a legend.
47:31Look, I think everyone's falling in love with Ann.
47:33She'll be a hero in Castelloc whenever this gets out.
47:36You owe me big time.
47:38I know.
47:39How much?
47:39No.
47:41It's a weekend.
47:42A weekend.
47:43Weekend arranged.
47:44Yeah.
47:45Something where I don't have to move.
47:49I can't believe we're in the semi-finals now.
47:51It feels good to be there.
47:53Just keep working there and putting the head down for the next two weeks and go again.
47:56I'm so proud of them.
47:58They never stopped encouraging me the whole way around.
48:01I'm so proud of them.
48:03I give them a tough time and I drive them hard.
48:06But we learnt a lot today.
48:08I think we needed to take a lot of learnings from today and we did.
48:11I have to say, between yourself and Ann, you're putting all the mammies in the country under pressure because you have just put in such a performance.
48:18Your resilience is unbelievable.
48:19And I think at the end of the day, like, lads, you have to be so proud of your mum, are you?
48:24Yeah, absolutely.
48:25We're going to go home and get a takeaway.
48:26Definitely probably get a few tips or something on the way home, yeah.
48:29For the spin home and chill out, relax and hopefully probably get back into training on Monday for a semi-final, yeah.
48:35I think you need to just take it in for a second.
48:37You're going to the semi-finals of Ireland's Fittest Family.
48:42Well done, lads.
48:43I'll see you there.
48:44Congrats.
48:45Oh, what an explosive finish to the first of our quarterfinals here at Hell and Back.
48:51We are going to return next week where three families are going to become two.
48:55See you then.
48:57Next week, we're back in the bog with three more quarterfinalist families.
49:03Jeez, man, jump off the wall.
49:05Don't, jump off the wall.
49:06With newbies Michael Dara McCauley.
49:08We're going to win it where we're going to win the hard way.
49:10Go, go, go.
49:11And Andrew Trimble.
49:12Yeah, just flip over it.
49:14Taking on veteran coach Donico Callaghan.
49:17Help her, pull her across, take his hand.
