00:00To the top and grab that 15,000 euro cash prize and the title of Ireland's Fittest Family 2025.
00:17Welcome to Ireland's Fittest Family.
00:20We're back at our base camp in Gormanstown, County Mead, and it's the second of our heats in this year's competition.
00:25Last week, OG coach and three-time winner Anna Geary and newbie coach Michael Darragh McCauley kicked off this year's competition as they went head-to-head in our first heat.
00:38After three nail-biting events and some intense rivalry, it was Michael Darragh who got his two families through, leaving Anna with just one family left in the competition.
00:48Michael Darragh, what a way to kick it off, two families through to the quarter-finals.
00:51Two for two, absolutely buzzing.
00:53This week, it's the turn of former Ireland teammates and Munster Ulster rivals Doneco Callaghan and Andrew Trimble.
01:00In our final heat next week, it's Fittest Family veteran David Fitzgerald versus Paralympic swimming champion Ellen Keane.
01:10Andrew has 70 caps for Ireland. I've 94, you know.
01:14We've Andrew Trimble in as well this year, like, what an athlete, what a rugby player, incredible.
01:21Ultimately, whenever you get out there in the heat of the battle, I know I'm going to get fired up, excited and flustered.
01:25Doneco is a massive character in Ireland for the family, you know, he's a real funny guy.
01:30Andrew coming in now, though, might challenge him with that title, because he's also a funny guy, he loves to mess.
01:35My only experience of coaching, I suppose, is coaching my 10-year-old and his mini rugby team.
01:40And my coaching style with that would be generally to be ignored.
01:44Each coach has two families in tonight's competition.
01:47Doneco's families are the Linehans from Cork and the Hickeys from Dublin.
01:52Andrew's families are the Hilliards from Kildare and the McKennas from Monaghan.
01:55Done-Earons!
01:59Yeah-hey! Andrew Trimble!
02:03Hi! You're very welcome along.
02:05Yeah, great to be here.
02:06So you guys obviously go way back. You used to be teammates.
02:08Best friend.
02:09You're going to show Andrew the ropes, you know?
02:11Yeah, I know you're trying to build this up as, like, enemies and we are when we play it against each other, but we're kind of frenemies.
02:18Frenemies are worse than enemies, Giants.
02:19I didn't know that.
02:20Don't let her get in your head, that's not true.
02:22It is your first time on Ireland's Willis Family. How are you feeling?
02:24I'm good, I'm good. Nice to meet the families.
02:26I got this look from the McKennas, they're from Monaghan, and I got this look that I recognise I've seen before.
02:31And it's a look that says, why can't you be Tommy Boat?
02:38Tonight, all families will compete in two events, Box to the Top and in bits.
02:43Box to the Top will have two heaps, both with one family from each coach going head-to-head.
02:48The losing families will be given a 20-second time penalty for the second event.
02:52The two families with the best times in in bits will go straight through to the quarter-finals.
02:57The slowest families will battle it out in our army eliminator for their remaining place in the quarter-finals.
03:03First up, it's Andrew's family, the McKennas from County Monaghan.
03:08We entered Ireland's family because we think we have a chance in winning.
03:13The secret weapon would definitely be Colleen. She's late, she's fast, she'd be nimble.
03:17If you were looking for me, you'd never find me in the house, no. It's the last place you'd go looking for me.
03:21I'd much prefer to be outside, let it be on my bicycle, out hiking a mountain, out for a walk or run.
03:28Caelan, he'd be very into the sheep and the farming side of it.
03:31He, at a young age, he took a sheep farming and he played football.
03:36And same as all of us, handball and rugby.
03:38Cormac was a very, very relaxed person. Very, very hard to get a raise out of Cormac, but Cormac just goes with the flow.
03:45He'll not steal the attention or anything, he'll just, whatever's happening, he'll float with us.
03:50I think we can definitely win Ireland's for this family. That's why we've entered.
03:53Next up, it's John O'Keslinahan from County Cork.
03:57We're a fairly competitive family when it comes to all games, out in the garden, board games inside.
04:03We always like competing each other. Dad's a big golfer, he's golfing all of his life.
04:06Be fairly fit too, he goes for his runs there a couple of times a week.
04:10Goes to the gym as well, he'd be fairly active. For touching up on 60, he's not doing too bad.
04:15Rory is generally an all-rounder. He's very good at everything.
04:19He has an older brother who he's always trying to out-achieve.
04:24There's great rivalry between them. So whatever Sean does, Rory will try and do better.
04:29Ava's body, the fittest. She does a lot of long running and cardio.
04:33So hopefully that could come in handy. She's very good at the plank stuff like that, balance and like flexibility.
04:40If there's anything to do with that, she'll be very strong.
04:42Sean's very strong. He likes going to the gym and he started MMA recently.
04:46Sean would definitely be the strongest, but in terms of speed, I'd say Rory would be up there.
04:51We've been training really hard. We've been trying to do as much running as we can and going to the gym and even swimming just in case anything comes our way.
04:59Sandbags, sweat and seriously steep hills. Oh, and a box. Welcome to Box to the Top.
05:08Tonight, members of the Irish Defence Forces will demonstrate this test of strength, strategy and stamina.
05:16One person for each family starts the race standing on an army kit box in the sea.
05:20On the sound of the horn, they must jump off the box, pick it up and run with it to their remaining family members.
05:27With the family are four 15kg sandbags. Between them, they must carry the sandbags and the box through the rest of the course.
05:34Next, it's a 200m run broken up by crawls through two army camo nets. Once through them, it's a run up a hill and onto a platform.
05:43The sandbags have to be placed inside the box and the lid closed. When all the family members are on the platform, they go down a ladder and up a wall.
05:51Finally, it's a run up a steep bank. When all four family members are standing at the top of the bank, they win the race.
05:57The losing family will carry a 20 second time penalty into the next event.
06:00We have a strategy in place. We're going to stick all the sandbags in the box, give it to Keelan and Cormac and let them run.
06:15And then let the girls get ahead and create a bit of a tunnel in the net.
06:19It's going to be Cormac standing out in the box to start the event. He'd be probably a bit faster than me.
06:24We were up against a good family there. It looked tough, so try our best.
06:2720 seconds actually might not be that big a deal.
06:30You said that to Joshman.
06:33The nerves aren't too bad at the minute, but at the start of the race, I'd say they'll be going.
06:38Ninety.
06:40I'm a bit nervous about the first race. I think the cargo nets are going to be harder than people think.
06:44The teams we're up against do seem very good, but at the same time we're very confident in ourselves, so hopefully we can win the first round anyway.
06:50I think it's about speed and agility really, so I would say probably Ava, she would be the fastest and I think she'd fly through those nets.
07:00Might have a bit of trouble here, but anyway.
07:03Starting in red, it's Cormac McKenna and in yellow, Sean Linehan.
07:07We are ready to go for our first race of the day on Gormanston Beach.
07:11Three, two, one.
07:15Box to the top begins.
07:17Paul O'Donovan gets our competitors underway.
07:20Two 19-year-olds here starting this race.
07:23And they are right beside each other.
07:27And the terrain gets a little bit trickier from here.
07:31That box is tricky to handle.
07:32So Cormac McKenna in red is up to the rest of his family.
07:37And the McKennas from Monaghan have opened up a little bit of a lead.
07:40The first of these 100-meter sprints.
07:42It's a lovely day in County Mean.
07:46So this is Colleen McKenna out in front for her family.
07:49And Ava Linehan is pushing hard too.
07:52What is interesting is the McKennas have put the sandbags into the box.
07:56The Linehans are carrying them.
07:58So this is the camel neck crawl.
07:59Get through Ava.
08:00We'll just go Ava.
08:02So Ava Linehan through that already and she's gone.
08:06There's a little bit of assistance for the McKennas.
08:07They have two of those nets as you can see.
08:09And the lads have got to get the box through with them.
08:12This is not easy at all.
08:15So there's good teamwork from the McKenna family in red.
08:18Help your dad, help your dad.
08:20And here's the rest of the sandbags for the Linhans.
08:22That army kit box is empty for the Linhans family.
08:26What are you doing Sean? Sean get out!
08:28As always the role of the coaches here is very important.
08:31Calm, clear instructions.
08:33So the McKennas have opened up a nice lead haven't they?
08:37Take your time guys, take your time we got the lead.
08:38So Andrew keeping them calm.
08:42That's a bit confused from the Linhans.
08:45The sandbags are an issue.
08:47And the strategy isn't working carrying those bags.
08:49The McKennas have seen the difference.
08:51They've put the bags inside that box.
08:54And they have a big lead.
08:56But the Linhans are closing or trying to.
08:59So the McKennas try to get up to the top of this wall.
09:03And then there's a steep bank in front of them.
09:06They are in pole position here.
09:08They've been very fast and they've made this look straight forward.
09:11And it certainly isn't.
09:12What about the performance of mum Sharon McKenna?
09:15She's first up to the top.
09:17Very, very impressive performance.
09:19And it's a victory for the McKennas.
09:20They win.
09:22The Linhans family from Cork didn't get that right at all.
09:24They'll carry a 20 second time penalty into the next event.
09:27It was just a great close.
09:29It was very exciting. It was fun.
09:30There were wee powerhouses, the three of them.
09:32So they are.
09:33We stuck to the plan and it ended up working for us very well.
09:35Bring on time.
09:36Feeling good, yeah.
09:37Well, Andrew, congratulations.
09:39You guys won the first race.
09:41It has to feel good.
09:43I'm feeling great at the minute.
09:44I think we're probably feeling a little bit bulletproof.
09:46The two lads got off and just so strong on the carry.
09:49And then the two girls were technically getting the net up.
09:53A lot of things fell into place.
09:54So they did brilliantly.
09:55Jonica, as you well know, this is only round one.
09:59Yeah.
10:00And a lot can change.
10:01Of course, but I think they got it so right.
10:04To be fair, it was a brilliant performance.
10:06Credit where credit is due.
10:07At the end of the day, they were just a better family.
10:10It was all over really quick.
10:11I think I was expecting a longer race.
10:12And then all of a sudden we heard their fall coin.
10:14There is a 20 second time penalty going into the next event.
10:17You do have to work a lot harder.
10:18How are you feeling about that, that 20 second penalty?
10:20Yeah.
10:2120 seconds.
10:22Probably a long way to come back from.
10:24You smugness is frightening.
10:25Honestly, stranger things have happened on Fitna's family.
10:28Sorry for being so cocky.
10:30Yeah, look, you know, it could be the other way next time around.
10:33So watch out, Andrew.
10:34We're coming to get you.
10:36The next race is about to start now.
10:38Can Andrew get another family over the line first?
10:41Or will Dunica make a spectacular second half comeback?
10:46Andrew's second family are the Hilliards from County Kildare.
10:49My dad decided to apply for the show.
10:51He's been talking about it for years.
10:53As long as I've been watching the show, I dream to be actually taking part.
10:57Alan is, I'd say she's like the strongest of us all now,
11:00but I think that she would never like say that herself.
11:03Just seeing how she kind of pushes herself is for me like super inspirational.
11:08The big reason as to why myself and the girls are willing to take part in the show
11:12is because of the influence that my mum and dad have had on us both.
11:15In particular, my dad, because he's always been active.
11:19Me, Alana and Julia are all part of the same gym
11:22and we go a couple of times a week.
11:24We're all kind of along the same kind of strength levels then as well.
11:27I think we will work really well together as a team.
11:29I mean, we're used to training together in the gym
11:31and certain competitions will take part there.
11:33We're often paired up together.
11:35So I do think that that will definitely help within the competition itself.
11:38I think people might underestimate that team, you know,
11:41and they might think, oh, it's just all girls.
11:43Well, I think we might surprise a few people.
11:45We won't fear anybody.
11:46We'll be giving them everything we can.
11:48Donika's next family are the Hickeys from County Dublin.
11:51To be honest, I couldn't believe it but really excited to give it a go
11:54and it's really nice to do something together as a family.
11:57Like Conor, without a doubt, definitely he'll be our secret weapon.
11:59He's got a youth on his side.
12:01He's also extremely competitive as well, very fast.
12:03Our biggest strength is, like, our fitness.
12:06We're all, like, able to, like, keep up with each other and help each other.
12:09Cindy will be the team leader.
12:11She's super competitive, a good leader and is a strong runner.
12:15We all do parkrun.
12:16Jodie kind of shows up, says he does no training
12:18and absolutely hair off at these amazing times.
12:21But it's very confessive.
12:23Ruby is my younger sister.
12:25We go to the gym together, we run together.
12:28It'll be amazing to win something together as a family.
12:30We've got to believe to achieve and definitely think we all have the determination to win.
12:34So, yeah.
12:35Go Hickeys! Woohoo!
12:36Yay!
12:43The leaders are going to be great.
12:45Good group, really connected with the families
12:46and looking forward to seeing what we can do out there.
12:48To have Andrew as a coach is just incredible for us as a family.
12:52Chalk tactics there, so we have a plan.
12:54The nets particularly, I think, will be a challenge with the box
12:57and all the gear with it.
13:00Ready for box to the top in gold.
13:02It's Mel Hilliard.
13:03And in white, Jodie Hickey.
13:05Three!
13:06Two!
13:07One!
13:08It's an all-Leinster battle between Dublin and Kildare.
13:12The Hickeys from Dublin, the Hilliards from Kildare.
13:14And there's an early lead for Jodie Hickey.
13:17Well, he's gone off very, very quickly.
13:19That's an impressive start of putting pressure on Mel Hilliard already.
13:23Well done!
13:24Well done!
13:25Well done!
13:26Great work!
13:27So the box is awkward.
13:28It's not particularly heavy.
13:29So, Connor in white for the Hickey family has gone off very quickly on that sprint.
13:33He's not bothering with the sandbags.
13:35Each of them weigh 15 kilograms.
13:37Here come the Hilliards though.
13:38They're all together.
13:39And they're off and running.
13:43So, Connor for the Hickey family is up to the camo net.
13:49And there's a nice steady pace from Mel and Alana Hilliard carrying that box.
13:54So, Connor is still pushing forward.
13:59But here come the Hilliards.
14:02Not too far behind under the watchful eye of Andrew Trimble.
14:06It's really difficult to move the bags and that box underneath the nets.
14:16And they're sort of stuck at the moment, aren't they?
14:19Well, the Hickey family lost a little bit of time there.
14:23But now they're free of the first cargo net and up to the second one.
14:28So, Connor has gone back to help the rest of his family.
14:31So, here come the Hilliards.
14:35This is tight. They're all bunched up together.
14:40And Connor has decided to carry those two products himself.
14:45He's enjoyed this.
14:47It's not over yet though.
14:49Still plenty to do in box to the top.
14:53So, Connor gets to the top of that platform first.
14:57Dumps the two sandbags.
14:59And he's gone back to help the rest of his family.
15:01The Hilliards though, they're bunched up.
15:03Will that be an advantage for them?
15:05They have to put those sandbags inside the kit box and close the lid.
15:10And then they can move away from him down the ladder.
15:12Nice dunk.
15:13This is very tight, isn't it?
15:14A marginal lead for the Hilliard family.
15:16The ladder is tricky to get down.
15:18The Hickey family have closed up on them, haven't they?
15:20And they are neck and neck.
15:21They're right beside each other.
15:22Who's got the strength at the end of a grueling event to get to the top of that very steep hill?
15:28The wall is not straight forward.
15:30Teamwork absolutely important.
15:31The Hickey family, there's two going up towards the top of that hill.
15:33But the Hilliards are all together.
15:34All four of them.
15:35Who's it going to be?
15:36This is really, really tight between these two families.
15:37And it's the Hilliards who get up there.
15:38All four of them there.
15:39They win.
15:40The Hickey family now have a 20 second time penalty into the next event.
15:43Ah, it's all going so well for you.
15:44Is I?
15:45Yeah.
15:52Hilliards, we need to say congratulations to you.
16:04Well done.
16:06That was a phenomenal race.
16:07How are you guys feeling going in now?
16:10I think we're feeling pretty good.
16:11now. I think we're feeling pretty good. Yeah, we got a bit of a spring in our staff. It's a huge
16:16advantage. I can't lie about that. I think it's a bit of a confidence booster too. I think we can
16:22all agree that superstar that race was without a doubt. Connor, you were phenomenal. Very proud of
16:29him. He did super. Yeah, he was kind of the most composed of us. It was panic and run, panic and
16:35run for the rest of us, but he was very calm and composed. Connor was absolutely brilliant. He took
16:39off like a hair at the beginning and then came back, got the two bags and was able to
16:44get up the hill. So, yeah, massively proud of Connor. He's done great so far. Donica, we're
16:48on a 20 second time penalty going into the next event, but I feel like there's a fire in the
16:53belly of the hickeys here now. Yeah, absolutely. I think you've nailed it. Of course, it's
16:56disappointing, but I think we made an awful lot of mistakes, so we kind of look at our
17:00own performance. The 20 seconds is going to make us like definitely fight harder for the
17:03next event. We kind of need to just forget about this morning and think about the next
17:07rest of it. Very best of luck later on. I'll see you then, all right?
17:10Sure, let's go. Come on.
17:14Get off! Get off! Get off! Get off!
17:19Ah, Lockie!
17:20Yes, that was great. Hi, Laura. Oh, I'm so good to see you. Talk to me about this beautiful
17:42creation that you've got. Yeah, I've been at it now for about four hours. I just wanted
17:45to take up something new, a new hobby, but it's quite time consuming, but it's all worth
17:50it when you see. Look at that! Oh, that's so cool. I think there's about 30 years in this
17:56now, really and truly. Absolutely. Trimble just arrived. Oh, wow! Oh! Hi, Andrew. I'll just
18:03be with you in a minute. Oh, my God, yes. I totally got it. Did you just whip this up?
18:08Five minutes. Five minutes? Yeah, just threw it together. I wanted to create the sand manifestation
18:14of Donika's rugby career. Okay. Missing tackles and my rugby career, line breaks in general,
18:21X-Factor. Oh, wow. Just, I mean, in between everything that we've got going on today. Yeah.
18:28Do you think I hurt his feelings? No. I mean, he did a great job, too. Yeah. Just different.
18:38Welcome back to Ireland's Fittest Family. Now, before the break, the McKennas and the Hilliards
18:55both managed to get the box to the top first, which means going into this next event, the
19:00Hickey's and the Linehan's both have a time penalty, but as we know on this show, anything
19:04can happen. I always thought the families who did jigsaws together were a little bit
19:09weird, but this is actually great crack. Everyone has to complete a leg of the challenge,
19:14grab a piece of the jigsaw and then put it back together, because right now it's in bits.
19:19Just like our families are going to be at the end of this. This is in bits.
19:24In bits is a brand new event where strategy is key. Each person must complete a different
19:30task in this square of the Army Camp's training trenches before pulling a piece of a Fittest
19:35Family jigsaw puzzle to the centre. First, we have a crawl under two camo nets. The next
19:40leg involves jumping over four straw bales. Then, it's a lung-busting run to collect sandbags
19:47from two barrels, and the final person has to drag a tire down the length of the trench. The
19:53clock stops when all four family members are standing on their piece of the completed puzzle.
19:59This event will definitely have everyone in this.
20:03First up for this new time trial are Dunica and the Hickeys. They lost their first event,
20:08so they go into this with a 20-second time penalty.
20:12Dunners, Hickeys, here we go.
20:16We're not messing around now, are we? No, we're not. We messed around too much this morning.
20:20Now we're going to try to put that all right. This is a good course to make the 20 seconds back.
20:24It's four legs, essentially. Five seconds a person. I think it's well possible to pick up five seconds each.
20:30We're feeling good? Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're a bit nervous, but that's not a bad thing, Laura.
20:34You need the nerves. You do. You do. Trimble's here three minutes, and he's given it all that. You know what I mean?
20:40I cannot have two families in the Eliminator. Me competing against myself would be a nightmare.
20:46I need to drag him into a fight. In fact, I'm going for him.
20:51On the start line for the Hickey family from Dublin are Ruby, Jodie, Connor, and Cindy.
20:58Connor, same again, boy. You're brilliant, yeah?
21:01Three, two, one.
21:05So first to go for the Hickey family, it's Cindy.
21:08One, running the first leg and taking on the responsibility of that.
21:13And Cindy has to deal with two camo nets, which are down inside that trench.
21:21Remember, they are carrying a 20-second time penalty from the first event.
21:27So we'll see can they make that up over the course of in bits.
21:33So Cindy has been quick enough through there, powerful running style.
21:37She's got out of the trench and has to grab the piece of the jigsaw puzzle and drag it back down the course.
21:44Ruby's waiting, Ruby's waiting.
21:46Remember, rope to the corner, take it off or to the corner, move.
21:50So the piece of the puzzle has to be placed in the frame.
21:54And then Ruby is tagged in.
21:58And off Ruby goes down into the trench.
22:03And this is the sandbag carry.
22:06So you'll see she has to get out of the trench, grab the sandbag.
22:10On top of the barrel.
22:13And jump back down again.
22:16Flings the bag in.
22:19And she's back moving again.
22:21One more sandbag to collect.
22:25That's done.
22:27Goes round the barrel.
22:2830 seconds of work.
22:2930 seconds of work.
22:30And into the trench.
22:31Get them up.
22:32Get them up here.
22:33They're 15 kilograms each, those sandbys.
22:35Get out, get out, get out.
22:36Just come.
22:37So Ruby has placed those on the barrel and she's out of the trench.
22:41And here's the second piece of the puzzle.
22:44Push, push, push.
22:46And Ruby is back to the rest of her family.
22:48Rub to the edge, rub to the edge, rub to the edge.
22:49Now and tag him.
22:50Get on him, go.
22:51Here we go.
22:52It's placed in.
22:53And third to go is Connor.
22:55Well done Connor.
22:56And Connor has to jump over four straw bales which are in the trench.
23:01I think those bales may well be taller than Connor.
23:05But he's got past the first one.
23:08And now the second.
23:09It's a good technique from him.
23:12This is quick.
23:15Nicely done.
23:17And he's up to the fourth one, past the fourth one.
23:21Out of the trench.
23:22And that's the third piece of the puzzle.
23:24Grab that and go.
23:25You're doing great boy.
23:26Go on.
23:27Big one.
23:28Big one.
23:29Well done.
23:30Pushing hard now.
23:31To get back to the rest of his family.
23:32They've just one to go.
23:33The Hickey family from Dublin.
23:36Didn't have a particularly long journey to get down to Gormanson and County Meath.
23:40This is Jodie.
23:41And Jodie when he gets into the trench will have to drag this tire.
23:45It's not particularly heavy.
23:48Good boy.
23:49It's not heavy at all.
23:50It's just awkward.
23:52And it's slowing him down a bit.
23:53But he's really pushing those legs.
23:56Getting down towards the end of the trench.
23:58As you can see the rope wrapped around his chest.
24:00Out he goes.
24:01And this is the final piece of the puzzle.
24:04The Hickey family will set the time for the rest to try and beat.
24:07But remember, whatever they finish on, we're going to add 20 seconds onto it.
24:11From the watchful eye of Donnicka.
24:14Jodie is back to the rest of his family.
24:16Every second counts the last piece of it.
24:20They're all standing on top of the jigsaw.
24:22The clock stops at 5.09.
24:23But with the 20 second time penalty, it's 5.29.
24:26We'll see how good that is.
24:30Hey champ.
24:31Brilliant.
24:32It was definitely a better performance than this morning
24:34in that we didn't get stuck and I never get some pieces.
24:38We were all very proud of what we did.
24:40I think we all gave it our all, so.
24:43Jigsaw pieces are not light.
24:44Not after you've ran, you've jumped, you've carried sandbags
24:47to drag a jigsaw piece along.
24:49It's definitely not easy.
24:50Overall, I don't think we could have given it any more.
24:53My concern is that the time will cost us
24:56and that the error from the first event will cost us deeply.
25:00Next up for InBits are Andrew and the McKennas.
25:03Can they repeat their blistering first round performance?
25:06Time to find out.
25:08The calm before the storm, smiles on faces.
25:11Remember, we got 20 seconds of offer,
25:14so we don't need to go 100 miles an hour.
25:16If we go as hard as we can here and do our best,
25:19we leave all out the field now.
25:20We plan not to have to be eliminated.
25:22I think Andrew deserves to be a wee bit smug, you know,
25:25because, obviously, both his teams did well this morning.
25:28You know, seeing Danica soul-searching on his phone
25:32to his mum or his wife, you know, do you still love me?
25:35That would be perfect.
25:36That would be a real success for me today.
25:38Lining up for the McKennas, we have Cormac,
25:41Calon, Colleen and Sharon.
25:46Three, two, one.
25:50Seconds to go in bits are the McKennas from Monaghan for Andrew Trimble.
25:56And first up, it's Mum Sharon, a High Rock Specialist.
25:59It was very impressive in the first event this morning.
26:02She's got the camo nets to start.
26:04One arm right ahead, just trying to clear that space.
26:06Nice, well done.
26:07Watch your head.
26:08Nice and calm instruction from Andrew.
26:11Come on, Sharon, great stuff.
26:12Sharon was in blistering form this morning.
26:17Good job.
26:18In event one.
26:19In event one.
26:20And it's a good solid start for the McKenna family.
26:245.29 is the time they have to beat.
26:27And they're just through a minute on the first leg of this in bits relay challenge.
26:33So the first piece of the puzzle is back.
26:36And Sharon tags her daughter Colleen.
26:40And her task will be to carry these sandbags.
26:45Collect them off the barrels.
26:47Carry them from one end of the trench to the other.
26:49Big into boxing and the GA.
26:53Very strong competitor.
26:54And there's sandbag number one.
26:56For Colleen McKenna.
27:02She can see where the second sandbag is.
27:05There it is.
27:07And it's been collected around the barrel.
27:09And then it's a sprint with both of them down to the bottom of the trench.
27:14This feels quick.
27:16There's the second piece of the jigsaw.
27:19Let's go hard Colleen.
27:20Let's go all the way home.
27:22Colleen McKenna drives the legs.
27:24Back down to the rest of her family.
27:26Two and a half minutes done.
27:285.29 is what they've got to try and better.
27:31Just put it around the right way.
27:33That's done.
27:34The third in is 19-year-old Cormann.
27:37And he is sprinting to that trench.
27:39He's got to jump over these bails.
27:43And look at that.
27:44Brilliant technique.
27:45Brilliant man.
27:46That was a brilliant bit of skill and technique from Cormac McKenna.
27:50And if anything, he's getting faster.
27:52Jumping over those positions.
27:53Not there.
27:54Right, let's go hard.
27:55That was brilliant from Cormac McKenna.
27:57Piece number three.
27:59And there's no let up in the pace at all.
28:01Go hard.
28:02This is quick and he is going hard.
28:05So Cormac McKenna will finish this out.
28:08Three and a half minutes.
28:09Oh, there's a little bit of a mistake there that's costed a second or two.
28:12But not fatal.
28:14The tire pull.
28:15And Kaylon's quick as well.
28:16He's 21.
28:17And they have smashed this from the first leg with Sharon McKenna.
28:23This felt fast.
28:24We get an exact time very shortly.
28:28Kaylon out of the trench.
28:30The final piece of the puzzle has been dragged along the ground.
28:37And this, well, I've laid down a marker.
28:40This is a really quick time.
28:42Very impressive.
28:43There's no time penalty to carry into this.
28:44So it's four minutes and 22 seconds.
28:46Our new leaders, the McKenna's.
28:494.22.
28:50Nicely done.
28:53It looked quick.
28:54It looked like that's going to be a time that's...
28:56I don't think anybody's going to beat that.
28:58McKenna's.
28:59I would say you feel quite good about that.
29:02But on a scale of 1 to 10, how tough was it?
29:05It wasn't really as tough as it wasn't as tough.
29:08The children were very, very strong, so they were...
29:10Andrew, I'd say you have to be so proud of that.
29:12It was unreal.
29:13Yeah.
29:14And then someone, as we finished, someone said,
29:15I'd say that was faster than the army, was it?
29:18The McKenna family, faster than the army.
29:22Next up for Imbiss are Dunica and the Linehan.
29:25They lost their first event, so they go into this with a 20-second time penalty.
29:28The Linehan family, isn't it mad to think?
29:31You could have been out for a lovely round of golf today,
29:33but instead you're in the hardest course in the army camp.
29:35Look, our aim is to win this event, right, and get home early to Carp tonight.
29:39Oh, yes, I'd like to go.
29:40Oh, I'd love to hear you.
29:41Yes, well done.
29:42So we're very, very confident going into it.
29:44Typical Ireland's fittest family.
29:46We take something so wholesome, like a jigsaw, and we make it absolutely torturous.
29:51It's going to be tough.
29:53Ready to go for the Linehan family are Sean, Diarmuid, Ava, and Rory.
29:59Three, two, one.
30:03Paula Donovan gets them underway, and first to go is 18-year-old Ava.
30:08Fast start from her.
30:10Remember, the Linehans are carrying a 20-second time penalty into InBits.
30:14They are a third of our four families to go.
30:17First of the cargo nets.
30:19Impressively, great encouragement from the rest of her family.
30:24Same again though, keep low, high back, high back.
30:27Brilliant, Ava.
30:28Outstanding, well done, well done.
30:30Offering great encouragement to Ava Linehan.
30:32Let's go, let's go.
30:33So she's out of that trench.
30:35Grab and go, you've 20 seconds of work.
30:37Puzzle piece number one.
30:38Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
30:40Dragged back down the course.
30:41Come on, Ava, come on, Ava.
30:42Keep in it, this is a brilliant leg.
30:44Ava, pumping the legs, a little bit of a stumble, and she's fallen.
30:48She's fallen, Ava Linehan, but she's okay.
30:51Now the rest of her family helped her out there.
30:53Go, go, go.
30:55Here goes Sean.
30:58Quick start from Sean.
31:00Very fast.
31:02So he's got the sandbags,
31:05which are on the two barrels ahead of him.
31:07There's sandbag number one.
31:09Ava slip, the conditions underfoot are perfect.
31:13It's a lovely dry day, but challenging at times.
31:17That's the second bag.
31:18He goes round the barrel, collects the other bag.
31:22Bit of a stumble again from Sean Linehan, from Not Fatal.
31:26Bags delivered to the top of the barrel, two minutes.
31:28They've got a beat for the quickest time to McKenna's, 4.22.
31:31The Hitties are back on 5.29.
31:34Whatever the Linehans get here, we're going to stick another 20 seconds onto it after the first event.
31:38Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
31:44Third to go now is 16-year-old Rory Lenahan.
31:48Bit of a stumble from him.
31:50He's got to jump over the straw bale.
31:55Looks like fun.
31:56That's good technique.
31:57Spinning through them.
31:59And again, repeating the dose.
32:01Great work, Rory.
32:02So Rory is fast here.
32:03He's made up some time.
32:05Grab and go, grab and go, grab and go.
32:07He's got to drag the puzzle piece behind him.
32:09He got so invested in what he was doing.
32:12He forgot about maybe the most important part.
32:15So this is a good time.
32:17Third one back.
32:18Heading for three and a half minutes.
32:20And last to go is Dad Dierman.
32:22He's a high rock fan.
32:23He's a big golfer.
32:25And he's got to drag this tire down that trench.
32:29It's certainly not as heavy as the golf bag he'd be used to carrying around the course.
32:35Good solid pace.
32:36The rope wrapped over his left shoulder.
32:39And he's got rid of the tire.
32:42He's going quick as well.
32:43Another stumble.
32:44The Lynethans have had trouble just keeping their feet.
32:47And now the final piece back.
32:49They're not going to be the quickest.
32:51As long as there's no mistakes here, they will be the second fastest out of the three.
32:55So they just have to fit the final piece of the jigsaw in there.
32:58That cost them a couple of seconds.
32:59It all has to be pressed into position.
33:014.42 with the 20 second time penalty.
33:03It's 5.02.
33:04They are not safe yet.
33:06Oh, Sanic.
33:07Hey, hey.
33:08Oh, Sanic.
33:09Every one of you.
33:11Brilliant.
33:12Brilliant.
33:13Brilliant.
33:14Honestly, so good.
33:15Everyone did their leg really well.
33:16And, yeah, I'm just delighted with everyone.
33:18Yeah.
33:19Brilliant.
33:20Ava, my father, Aurora, they all put in a serious shift.
33:22So I couldn't have asked for more from them.
33:24We said it right to run.
33:25We've done the best we can.
33:26It was a very poor performance this morning.
33:28There was a lot of constructive criticism from our coach, Stelica.
33:31So I think we bounced back.
33:34Whatever a boat doing really well, it's built confidence again.
33:37So the Lenohans are back.
33:38We're confident and it's great.
33:41Last up for in bits are Andrew's Hilliard family.
33:44With no time penalty hanging over their heads, they're in a strong position.
33:48For the Hilliards, this event should suit them.
33:51There's a lot of running.
33:53Well, talking about the 20 seconds, that is a huge advantage as far as I'm concerned.
33:58The only thing that can trip us up here is mistakes.
34:00As long as we keep a lid on it, I think we're in good shape.
34:02I think we're in good shape.
34:03I think so.
34:04Let's go wild folks.
34:05Yay!
34:06Ready to go for the Hilliards.
34:07It's Dad, Mel.
34:09Daughters, Ellen, Alana and Julia.
34:12Three, two, one.
34:18The Hilliards from County Kildare, last to go.
34:20And on the first leg, it's Alana.
34:23She is a primary school teacher.
34:26She's got the camo net crawl.
34:29For the Hilliard family to avoid the eliminator, they need to beat the Linehan's time of five minutes and two seconds.
34:36So that's the target that they have.
34:39Nice, Alana.
34:40There you go.
34:41So a good solid start from Alana under the first camo net.
34:46Keep your head.
34:47Well done.
34:48Perfect.
34:49Good stuff.
34:50Andrew Trimble right beside her and she's out of the trench.
34:53Let's go.
34:54There's Jigsaw piece number one.
34:55Let's go.
34:56Let's go.
34:57So a little bit of a stumble there from Alana.
35:02You may think it's easy to pull something like that along behind you.
35:06Sometimes it can trip you up literally.
35:08Second in, it's Julia.
35:10She's got the sandbags.
35:12Running is one of her big passions and she's pumping those arms and legs.
35:16She's down to the trench and in she goes.
35:19The girls in this family all very into volleyball.
35:28Sandbag number one.
35:30And here is sandbag number two.
35:34All good.
35:36So Julia has got two bags and just has to deliver them down to the barrel at the bottom of the trench.
35:45And they'll be very nearly halfway there.
35:48Empty the tank is the message from Andrew Trimble.
35:52Let's go all the way home.
35:53Let's go.
35:54Over two and a half minutes done.
35:55Remember it's 5.02.
35:56That's where they've got to be.
35:57And they've got to be inside if they want to avoid the eliminator.
36:01Let's go.
36:02Second piece placed in the frame and third to go is Ellen.
36:07She's got the straw bale jump.
36:10She is a scientist, an environmental scientist.
36:14That's a good solid start from Ellen Hilliard.
36:16Great start.
36:17That's perfect.
36:18Very good to you.
36:19That's really good.
36:20So bear number two of the four.
36:23She has to get over.
36:25Grab it at the end of the rope.
36:27Good steady pace.
36:28And then empty the tank all the way home, Ellen.
36:29Let's go.
36:30Great start.
36:31Well done.
36:32Go, go, go, go.
36:33Ellen with the last bit of max effort through four.
36:365.02 is what they've got to try and beat to avoid the eliminator.
36:41This is going to be tight.
36:42The third piece of the jigsaw placed inside the frame.
36:46And last to go is Dad Mel.
36:49Many years ago he was on a sports scholarship in the United States.
36:55All the way home, Mel. Let's go.
36:57Great fitness and Mel, you can see that as he pulls that tire down the trench.
37:01They're not going to do it.
37:03Grab the end of the rope.
37:04They're just going to miss out.
37:05Mel has the final piece of the jigsaw.
37:08So the Hilliard family, because they couldn't beat the Linehan's time of 5.02.
37:12They've been very close, haven't they?
37:14They really have been very close.
37:15They've no time penalty to carry into this.
37:17Clock stops at 5.14.
37:18They are in the eliminator, the Hilliards.
37:20Well done.
37:21Well done, folks.
37:22Great job.
37:23So with all four races complete, the McKennas and the Linehans have got the fastest times,
37:32with the Hilliards and the Hickies at the bottom half of the scoreboard.
37:35Despite their time penalty, the Linehans remain in second place.
37:39And along with the McKennas grab a place in the quarter-finals, leaving the Hilliards and the Hickies in the eliminator.
37:45Get up!
37:46Get up!
37:47Ah, lucky!
37:48Get up!
37:49Get up!
37:50Get up!
37:51Ah, lucky!
37:52Welcome back to Ireland's fittest family.
38:09Now, before the break, we saw Andrews McKennas and Dunica's Linehans both guarantee themselves a spot in our quarter-final.
38:17But there's still one spot up for grabs.
38:20And it's a Trimble vs. O'Callaghan eliminator for the Hilliard and Hickey families.
38:25It's time now for the eliminator where Andrews and Hilliards are going to take on Dunica's Hickey.
38:31But will Andrew continue that winning streak for our newbie coaches by bringing two families through to the quarter-finals?
38:38Let's find out.
38:42Tonight's eliminator will be relentless.
38:45First, our families must flip a heavy truck tire for 50 metres down the runway until it's completely past the fittest family barrels.
38:53Next, it's a climb over a 2.6 metres high container and up and over three round straw bales.
39:00After that, they have to carry a 50 kilogram army training log to a pallet with eight sandbags.
39:06They have to carry those to another pallet before tackling our eight foot or 2.4 metres high wall.
39:12Once over that, it's a run up our famous ramp.
39:15The first family with four people standing at the top wins the race and a place in the quarter-finals.
39:20The entire day, it does feel like it's been a marathon of the day, it's going to come down to a couple of moments.
39:32That ramp at the end, that's going to be the big one.
39:35You know, I did always want to have a go at the ramp, so I'm going to get that chance now.
39:44There's parts of the course that will make it harder with the wet weather, particularly the ramp at the end.
39:49Hoping someone's going to get out with a towel before we go up.
39:52No, I'm absolutely looking to finish Trimby and get rid of one of his families. It would be great.
39:57Take the smugness off him.
39:59It kind of feels like there's a change in tone in the last ten minutes.
40:04There's a seriousness that has descended on the whole group.
40:07We're going to have to see if it's going to be beginner's luck or a lot of experience.
40:11See you too.
40:12Thank you, Lord. Thank you.
40:13Are we still friends?
40:14No, I'll chat in about six minutes.
40:18The Eliminator is about to begin.
40:20For the Hilliard family in gold, it's Ellen, Julia, Alana and Mel.
40:26And for the hickeys in white, it's Jodie, Connor, Ruby and Cindy.
40:32Three, two, one.
40:38That place in the quarter-final is on the line here for the Hilliards in gold, closest to us.
40:44And the Hickey family wearing white on the left of your screen.
40:48So this tire, well, the Hilliards appear to be taking turns with this.
40:54So just going two at a time where it's more of a combined effort from the Hickey family, as you can see.
40:59The weather has taken a little bit of a turn.
41:04And that's a lead of the minute for the Hilliards.
41:08So their strategy is working a little better under the watchful eye of Andrew Trimble.
41:12So Michael Malham is with the hickeys.
41:16And it's not easy to keep that tire going straight, but the Hilliards have managed to do that.
41:22And they are first through. They have to go around the barrel.
41:25And here they are at the container, which is 2.6 metres high.
41:29It's all about teamwork.
41:32Clear strategy. They have an order.
41:36You can hear they have done it with the Hickey family.
41:39So Julia Hilliard is first up for her family on top of the container.
41:42And there's Connor for the Hickey family.
41:44He's at some day, just 14 years of age.
41:47And it's not over yet.
41:49And that is Jodie about to get up there to make it 3 for the Hickey family.
41:56Mel Hilliard is finding that difficult.
41:59It's not meant to be easy and it certainly is not easy.
42:02And Andrew just has to reposition that mask for Mel.
42:06He's got the hold of the lip at the top of the container.
42:09And his three daughters are dragging him up there.
42:12So all four Hilliards are on top of the container.
42:16It's a bit more of a battle for the Hickey family, but they're sorted now.
42:20And then you've got to get back down the other side.
42:232.6 metres with a couple of stumbles there.
42:26It's a long way down.
42:28But they are bunched up, falling all over the place.
42:32Here we go with the straw bales.
42:35This eliminator has everything in it.
42:37It's a serious test of fitness, of strategy, of resilience, mental toughness, the works.
42:44And they've lost a little bit of time there, the Hickey family.
42:49Connor is the anchorman, isn't he?
42:52There's Mel Hilliard.
42:54Well done, well done.
42:57Still a long way to go.
42:59And the prize is big.
43:02A place in the quarterfinals.
43:03This log, the army training log, weighs 50 kilograms.
43:08And off they go.
43:10A lead for the Hilliards on the left in gold.
43:13But it's certainly not much of a lead.
43:15You wouldn't be writing home about this.
43:17So they get rid of the training log.
43:20And now they've got to move these sandbags from one pallet to the other.
43:24They've taken them all, both families.
43:26They are neck and neck.
43:29Well done.
43:30Well done Ruby, well done, well done, well done.
43:31So big sandbags delivered.
43:32Well done, well done.
43:33Let's go.
43:34And this wall is eight feet high, 2.4 metres high.
43:39Really the same gig's a little smaller than the container.
43:44This stage there, legs, arms, everything burning.
43:49Nothing is straight forward.
43:50So Connor is the first over for the Hickey family.
43:53Well done.
43:54Here come the Hilliards.
43:55You got a turn round.
43:56Yeah, well done.
43:58So they've got two of them at the top.
44:00And they can help the others, can they?
44:02Or will they be able to?
44:04Yeah, I agree.
44:05So the rain has been coming down steadily all the way through this Eliminator.
44:09And it's just making things much more difficult.
44:12And everything is quite slippy.
44:14But the Hilliards now, the four of them are over that final wall.
44:18And now they get a look at the ramp.
44:20And the Hickey family are there as well.
44:22So it's come down to this.
44:23Mel Hilliard on the left and Jodie Hickey on the right.
44:26And Mel has got a hold on the top lip of that.
44:29Jodie's come straight back down.
44:30So Mel trying to drag himself up there.
44:32Andrew Trimble has been very cool and calm and collected.
44:35It's a simple, straightforward message for him.
44:38So the Hilliards have got one up.
44:39The Hickey's no one at the moment.
44:41And you can see just how slippy that ramp is.
44:44So Jodie Hickey is having another go.
44:46And he's failed too.
44:47And one of the Hilliards has come back down as well.
44:50So the tension builds and grows.
44:53The rain continues to fall.
44:55And only Mel Hilliard has managed to get up to the top of that ramp.
44:59Go on, go on, go on.
45:00Get off!
45:01You can see the stress in Dunica's face.
45:03You can hear it in his voice.
45:04Another attempt, another fail on both sides.
45:08This is amazing.
45:10Take a breath.
45:11Never seen anything like this before.
45:13But it's just like a nice ring.
45:20So Andrew Trimble deciding to use the coat.
45:22Using anything he can to try and dry that ramp.
45:24Connor from the Hickey family.
45:26Another attempt, another fail.
45:28Come on, let's see you Jodie, let's see ya.
45:30Jodie Hickey has got a hold of the lip on the top of the ramp.
45:33Oh!
45:34What are we doing again?
45:35We've done it.
45:36We've done it.
45:37We've done it.
45:38Oh!
45:39But every second of Mel's leap to the top for the Hilliard family looked even more impressive.
45:41Oh!
45:42But the rain is still falling.
45:43The ramp is so slippy.
45:44And Jodie was so close.
45:45Yes!
45:46Another goal.
45:47So that is about Ellen.
45:48Yes it is.
45:49Ellen's up there.
45:50Two for the Hilliards.
45:51Brilliant stuff.
45:52Absolutely amazing.
45:53How did she manage to do that?
45:54The Hickey still haven't got anyone up there.
45:55And we carry on again.
45:56And again.
45:57And again.
45:58And again.
45:59And again.
46:00And referee Paula Donovan has decided to call this.
46:02How long?
46:03What's going to happen here?
46:04The health and safety of the families is always a paramount concern so it just became unsafe
46:10for them to try and try any more attempts to get up the ramp.
46:13The ramp is no longer fit for purpose so we decided that we're going to base the result of the
46:18Eliminator on the fastest time in the time trial.
46:21That means that the family going through to the quarterfinal is going to be the Hilliards
46:23who use it the fastest time in the time trial.
46:24Hello!
46:25Hello!
46:26Hello!
46:27Hello!
46:28Hello!
46:29Hello!
46:30Hello!

46:38Hello!
46:39Hello!
46:40Hello!
46:41Hello!
46:42Hello!
46:44It was just getting slippery and slippery.
46:46It was more so you're actually afraid than is one of us actually going to hurt ourselves
46:50so definitely it was the right call I think.
46:52That wasn't a ramp it was a water slide.
46:54We are disappointed.
46:55Disappointed that we didn't even get one of the guys up.
46:57Yeah.
46:58But like, it was.
46:59That's what we thought.
47:00For the Hickeys, you should be so proud of yourselves.
47:03It's honestly incredible.
47:04Your endeavour all day and especially Conor.
47:06I'd say Conor was just, for me, the standard.
47:09It was.
47:10It was.
47:11We're all day proud of you.
47:12Yeah.
47:13So fantastic to have you Hickeys and we're so sad to lose you.
47:16Thank you very much.
47:17Thanks very much.
47:18The standard of coaches and families this year in Ireland, for this family, you can't
47:23afford a mistake and I'm having too many at the moment.
47:26I need to up my game.
47:27Hats off to the Hickey family.
47:29They were incredible and we battled with them in the first seed and we end up battling
47:32against them in the Eliminator.
47:34But to come out on top, it's just, I'm so proud of our family, the girls.
47:39It's just amazing.
47:40Andrew, I did say to you that it comes down to the ramps all the time.
47:44Were you expecting that though?
47:45No.
47:46At the start it was kind of funny.
47:47Yeah.
47:48And then it got not that funny.
47:49Not that funny.
47:50And then I looked up at one stage and Mel was up at the top and he just looked like a lonely
47:54dad that wanted to spend time with his daughters and we were trying to reunite this family.
47:59This is what it felt like.
48:00I'm delighted.
48:01You know, it's 2-0.
48:02Trimble O'Callaghan.
48:03Do you know what the best part is?
48:05You get to do it all over again in the quarterfinal.
48:08Congratulations.
48:09Oh, that's it.
48:11Andrew Trimble has made a two from two with our newbie coaches.
48:15But will the beginners look continue next week?
48:18We'll have the last of our heats back at base camp.
48:21We'll see you then.
48:23Next week, veteran coach, David Fitzgerald.
48:26Get off me!
48:27And swimming champion, Ellen Keane.
48:29That was really good teamwork.
48:30Go head to head in our third and final beat.
48:33Rind down! Rind down!
48:35Go, go, go, go, go!
48:36I like to be cool, calm and collected, whereas David doesn't do that.
48:40He just likes to throw his toys out of the room.
48:42Yeah, come on!
48:43Well, one of them will lose a family.
48:45Take your time.
48:46Be composed.
48:47You'll get there.
48:48That doesn't sound like sabotage at all, Ellen.
48:52Well, a different level of stamina is needed next as more house hunters trek around some cheap
48:56European homes.
48:57And then Mondo is in denial about his actions in Fur City.
49:00That's coming up at half eight.
