00:31write a really good resume and be terrible 30 year old Parker Schnabel is
00:36leaning on his crew like never before after years of running the cuts himself
00:42he's testing his top lieutenant's ability to lead Mitch and Brennan are getting
00:48sulfur ready to go we'll have the wash plant firing up there very soon we have
00:52two wash plants already running here on Dominion Bob and slucifer
01:00two weeks into the season and with only 400 ounces Parker wants his 40 person
01:07crew firing on old cylinders to bring in a big haul this week and put him on track
01:14for his 10,000 ounce season goal we do have a big crew this year you know a bunch
01:20of new people Tyson has a lot of training to do people need to understand what
01:25the expectations are and when they're doing things wrong and if they can't
01:28correct it then we just we need to get rid of it which is always a challenge
01:37Parker's given me more and more responsibility this year from last year
01:42it's probably about three times as much we have so many new people and with
01:48Parker still expecting more than double productivity as last year that's a large
01:55ask from a lot of new people Parker's charged rising star Tyson Lee with
02:02overseeing the huge Dominion Creek operation where two cuts are already
02:07producing gold the bridge cut and the recently opened Golden Mile which Parker
02:13believes could deliver big numbers if the crew keeps it running hopefully the new
02:22people have a better understanding of what we expect and what we need out of them
02:26here is a mining outfit and we're figuring out their caliber
02:32right now we have Michael digging pay down by Bob and the bridge cut the cuts
02:38looking hella nice clearly Parker's not around he's going for a big season this
02:43year the size of his operation that's massive new recruit Mike Thompson is a
02:48veteran gold miner with years of experience operating heavy machinery I did five
02:55years at a neighbor mine Parker offered me this job very hard to say no to Tyson's
03:01also relying on another new hire to keep the bridge cut gold coming in I have Amy
03:07learning how to run loader right now she's feeding Bob and I want to throw a
03:12bunch of stuff at her with the wash plan I have zero zero mining experience
03:25so for the last three days I have been doing some training and today is my
03:37first day on my own going from being a teacher just half month ago it's gonna be a big transition
03:47greenhorn Amy Lee traded a career as a science teacher to become a gold miner
03:57Taylor and Tatiana are my besties Tatiana actually trained me in a rock truck which
04:04was amazing we had such a good time and then on day two they just let me loose on
04:09my own and that was that after proving herself Tyson is putting Amy in charge of one of the most
04:16important jobs feeding pay dirt into the wash plan how's it going Amy good you pretty good good how
04:28you finding things now that I've gotten over a little bit of the fear after a couple hours it's
04:34getting better that's good I'd like to do a once over the plant with you and just kind of give you
04:39some things to look at awesome so there's this tail drum up here so you can see how it's nice and
04:45clean yeah that's how it should always be yeah if the belt walks left or right that can be an issue
04:51when you're feeding the wash plant a rock gets stuck on the belt and I've had it cut the belt clean in
04:58half like a razor blade before yeah if you think something is wrong yeah just shut it down okay
05:04let's run up here yeah open this rip on this that's the breaker then run up there open the bypass close
05:13the main any questions not at this moment just a sponge yeah let me just absorb yeah you absorbed

05:28fun when you think of all the responsibility you have and you're the sole person of watching the plant
05:38it plays on your mind a little bit I'm really happy with Amy can't wait to see what she can do this

05:56I'm getting flooded out I'm on my way last thing I want to do is tell Parker that the cut's flooded
06:04and we got to shut Bob down man that's a lot of melt water that's not what I needed man we have a lake in here we spend so
06:16much time getting the bridge cut drain it's getting flooded out again the water's backing up the bitch line of the cut
06:22I'm thinking that eight inch culvert's not big enough oh yeah we need to rattle your hoe over and dig up this road we got
06:30that big old culvert up there so let's throw that puppy in let's uh get this water on here
06:40so we got to get this water out because right now the only pay we can truck to Bob is in this square if
06:46it's flooding out Bob's gonna shut down as the 114 acre bridge cut thaws meltwater seeps into its drainage ditches
06:56where it is then channeled through an eight-inch culvert under Bob's only access road
07:02but the narrow culvert is overwhelmed by the volume of meltwater causing the ditches to overflow and flood the cut
07:11to stop the flood Mike was dig up the access room and replace the small culvert with a much larger 36 inch culvert
07:20then rebuild the road to wash plant Bob I'm gonna take the small little eight-inch culvert up and let
07:30the water go if I don't hurry up and get this water figured out Bob's gonna run out of pain that's bad news

08:01but it's the only thing I got kicking around here so hopefully I can do the job

09:11minutes we got her done well you know Michael sure stepped up to the plate and saved the day he got
09:17that culvert in got all the water leaving us he executed it perfectly we just got to keep the gold coming in
09:41gold prices are up there so we decided to get with the program right out of the bed we were the first ones sluicing in the Yukon
09:57the early board cut is done so now we're going to expand it
10:0010 miles southwest king of the Klondike Tony beats has already mined out his first cut
10:09pulling in 632 ounces of his 6500 ounce target
10:19since we had a nice early start now the trick is going to be stay ahead of the game so we can't let up
10:31after a hot start on his Indian River claim Tony's nearly out of pay dirt and he needs to open more
10:39ground at the early bird cut fast
10:44so what I want to do is strip here a hundred feet wide all the way to the other end so they can take
10:52all this gravel load it up dump it in the old cut so we get people on the go down here
10:57just like parker Tony's also relying on a crew of new recruits to get the job done
11:07we're going to have another 40 more people this year so you got to make do with whatever you can
11:12get and then hope it's okay oh this is my first year here who wouldn't want to come to the Yukon and work
11:21i love it here i love the chaos we've got a lot of equipment packed in in here weaving together
11:28rock truck drivers tyler swan and sam moore are part of an all-new crew tasked with getting the early
11:37bird extension down to pay in just one week i'm pretty new to gold mining i've only been at this
11:44for a little over a month now and there's very rarely a dull moment tony's approach throw the
11:52newbies in at the deep end and hope they can swim get the out of the way and get that other rock
11:59clock that out of the way so this will get out of the way make some room i mean you got two trucks
12:07if they can't find their own way this rock truck come back in there

12:46it was pretty sparse on training here and then off into the deep end can be a little bit stressful

14:36runs out but rookie driver sam has flipped his rock truck bringing the operation to a halt
14:48the game plans uh go up use the 480 if it'll pull it and hook on to the high point of the box
14:54and pull it back over on the right side up all right let's go flip this truck over

16:32i'm definitely back in the corner at this point i've got all this ground that i just finished paying off
16:36and no water license to be able to mine it and it's just like it's there taunting me
16:40really this has left me with no other choices but to move on
16:44100 miles east of tony rick ness hasn't mined a single ounce of gold
16:51forced to abandon a pile of pay and the richest ground he's ever mined at his duncan creek claim
16:59rick's committed his entire operation to gamble on new land
17:03at the end of the day i had to make a deal with troy in lightning creek you know i have to do
17:08something before we lose out on that even and there's people snooping around for for ground
17:13with licenses on it everywhere and i can't afford to wait any longer
17:18last week i'm here to make a deal rick met with landowner troy taylor 15 royalty payment we're going to
17:25do a hundred ounce payment and we can get started on there right away made a handshake deal to lease
17:30lightning creek and moved his entire mining operation eight miles northwest well we're at
17:37lightning creek we're going to go and hit this as hard as we can
17:45this year you know gold price is once again record high so we got about 100 ounces a week to get by the
17:50end of the year if we're going to get to 1800 ounces so we're really going to get a move on
17:54we've broken ground down at lightning creek plenty of challenges ahead of us this is new ground we got
18:00to learn time to get on some gold rick's opened the diamond cut and is depending on his crew to
18:10locate the pockets of gold rich pay dirt in this notoriously unpredictable area
18:24the diamond cuts go definitely going a good speed but at the start of any cut it takes some time to
18:37get prepped up this ain't bad but it may seem frivolous that we're just moving dirt from point
18:43a to point b but this is what we need to do efficiency is key not going to lie this is a good day
18:48i just want to make sure i'm keeping up with the pace because at the end of the season i want a big
18:55gold bonus so you know whatever it takes to get down to pay and start moving it is what i'll do

19:37pay dirt is gravelly and rocky gold bearing material that lies beneath the waste topsoil known
19:46as overburden that's with the gold in it right yeah let's look at it that looks good that whole
19:53floor down there that's the pay dirt we're looking for that came quick when we don't have
19:56to go down 150 feet hey just eating this area right here yeah it's bigger than pick it's found i
20:01know i know that's exciting and that should make for quick stripping and then we've got below that
20:08according to troy anywhere it's 12 to 15 feet of pay yeah so put the overburden where it wants to go
20:13and lost a good amount of paint it exposed here in no time let's get back on gold let's do it let's go
20:19we're already down to pay you know i'm not used to that we're used to going 100 some feet through
20:22overburden just to get to it and it's nice that it's so shallow here um bailey's doing a great job
20:27trucks are moving dirt sun's out good day with the team on the pay layer rick tasks the crew with
20:36stripping the entire diamond cut compared to like rick's claims it's a huge difference because we're
20:42moving about 160 feet worth of overburden and then over here it's you know five feet it's my first time
20:50seeing pay once we get that through the sluice box and through the plant it'll be good to see the actual
20:56phone while the team works rick takes a moment to make his handshake deal with troy official
21:03and sign the lease ridiculous kind of reading through it i don't i just don't like some of the
21:13stuff i'm seeing oh yeah hey z you got copy yeah go ahead please well just come over here and i'll show
21:23you something all right what's up buddy you're gonna make me read no i've got an updated agreement
21:38with troy he's given himself an awful lot of power i think where how it works is that he i i have to
21:43submit my mining plan to him and then he decides how it works right that says that he shall have access
21:49the equipment and or personnel at his discretion well that means to me that means yeah on a tuesday
21:53he come and shut down the sauce box i think it's a bit of an overreach i just don't you i always assumed
22:00when you lease the ground then you get to do with what you want like how your mining plan is and this
22:05sounds like this sounds like you sign the lease and then he has all the power i don't know what the
22:09angle is there i don't know if there is an angle at this point i'm just i'm waiting to stumble around
22:14a corner and find them like this like whoa i pulled the you know what i mean like stupid like that gets
22:18your wheels turning right let's just read over the contract a little bit more we're down here we're
22:24keep plugging away yeah yeah no i really said i appreciate it screw my head on straight make sure

23:05just not uh it's not sitting right with me i've worked with troy for a while and i trust the guy but
23:10it's fishy that i just paid him off and now we're going back and suddenly he's got more ground for us
23:16and we're i'm paying him again you know i'm kind of thinking he might be using my lack of options to
23:23turn things in his favor rick has already spent over forty thousand dollars in fuel and wages
23:30mining lightning creek but it could be all for nothing i'm trying to stay calm but i'm getting
23:38pretty riled up about it because i'm already down there working um i've got money into this i've got
23:42i've got guys down there i've got equipment down there um and i'm not stopping uh but i'm not signing
23:48this so he's gonna have to change his change his way of thinking because that's that's
24:00right now we have two wash plants running they have a little bit of time to do a lap of going
24:12into the bridge cut checking on bob making sure everyone's doing all right at dominion tyson lee is
24:20maxing out slucifer on the golden mile and in the bridge cut he has new operator mike digging out pay dirt
24:31i want to prove to this crew that i'm capable i can do the job like whatever they throw at me
24:36i definitely have the taste of that gold fever while greenhorn amy in charge of running wash plant bob
24:43feeds 250 yards of pay an hour i am making sure that i am keeping a constant flow of pay dirt going up the
24:55conveyors and also making sure they're not getting clogged up or many other things that i'm sure
25:10it's all clogged up at the top
25:39i just saw rocks shooting from the side unless there's a rock jammed in somewhere like up against
25:45our chain drive that caused it to not want to spin but first things first get all the dirt off the
25:51belts tyson suspects wash plant bob has rocks lodged in its hopper feeders internal conveyor chains stopping
25:59the mechanism from moving pay dirt toward the shaker deck leading to it piling up
26:05the solution dig out the hopper feeder removing all rocks lodged in the chain conveyor then clear
26:14any rocks from the super stackers belt rollers and start the plant up again
26:18yeah we just want to clear it out yeah because if we fired the super stacker up they'd be flying
26:29around like popcorn okay go get sucked down into the tail drum and slice the belt okay you did a great job

26:50what happened this chain bind up on something like a rock got stuck in the chain drive okay did
26:57we anything up i don't know we're just trying to shovel it out and make sure that the belts hold
27:02good you can see there's a lot of big rocks on the conveyor belt itself give me that shovel

28:31i'm so happy that i was able to spot it right away and shut it down because there were so many rocks

30:25thin ice you feel like anything could get you fired if you're not careful with the clock ticking tony
30:33has brought in experienced truck driver mason mcintyre to help out the conditions down here are pretty
30:41sloppy right now it's causing like a lot of big ruts which is hard to drive in sometimes for some people
30:49you gotta adjust to the conditions and some people catch on really quick and
30:54are used to it and some people just don't catch on at all and that's how mistakes happen
31:00that could be quite dangerous honestly if you can't run something like this which is
31:04not simple but a lot more simple than another piece of equipment oh somebody dumped her
31:15you people it's gonna be a mess i'll be right over there and have a look at it okay don't move
31:34at tony beats early bird cut another three hundred thousand dollar rock truck has flipped
31:54the one-two system seems to work pretty good if you off something twice because i'll just fire

33:02besides me but i mean i feel for the guy it's pretty unpleasant when the box slips over on your rock truck

33:25that's my first truck i tipped over it was a little scary tony was pretty relaxed i think i had
33:35the luck because i'm here my second season tony's crew are back in the race to get down to pay before
33:45sluice a lot runs out if you want to do x amount ounces a year you need x amount of people so you'd
33:51rather put up with some more i suppose but sometimes not that easy especially when it costs
33:56money i mean they turn trucks over but sometimes you wonder what the heck you're doing
34:11i asked to try to come down and meet me here um i'm basically going to tell him that his contract
34:21is bull i mean i don't know what he wants me to do with this i'm not budging off that ground and i'm
34:25not signing this so we need to come to some kind of compromise
34:33after moving his crew to a new claim on lightning creek
34:36rick ness has called a meeting with landlord troy taylor to negotiate the terms of the lease

34:50we gotta put some signatures on paper and make it legal there's no way i have gotten over the contract
34:59and a lot of things that i don't like it says that you have the right to change the mining plan at any
35:05time you can pull my equipment and my personnel when you see fit there's an awful lot of power going
35:11in your hands here i mean i would like to think that our last contract went pretty smooth i think
35:16it's coming down to a trusting and you know for me right here in this contract looks like you don't
35:22trust me at all and so i'm kind of wondering why i trust this you know yeah i get that i it's nothing
35:30personal it's just since the last agreement things have changed so much with the water licenses these
35:38days if there's any blemish if you are doing anything wrong maybe you weren't here on a day that
35:46something's going sideways it will be reflected on me it could result in getting my water license revoked
35:54i want to keep mining so i have to i have to have some teeth in this uh in this agreement
36:07i can kind of see where you're coming from troy but i don't believe that this level of supervision
36:12is necessary i mean i i don't i don't want to feel like i'm looking over my shoulder all the time
36:16and that's why i brought this um you know off the bat that's 100 ounces that i owe you as the minimum
36:22royalty on this deal and i'd be willing to give that to you up front right now today and get rid of this
36:44oh boy i from my perspective if i don't have some control in the agreement that's all i've got i i
36:51can't i can't i can't back up on that i just can't
36:56i understand it's got to be a tough one to tough pill to swallow what if i buy it
37:09so that's um it's a big one for me
37:20i would need another another 200 ounces on top of this so 300 ounces total yes
37:26it's just it's just too much you know i get that ground is at a premium with a water license right
37:39now but it's a lot of money on the line and i won't be squeezed it's not going to happen
37:43how about i get you another 100 ounces that's 200 ounces total and then we then we call that good
38:00i'm still responsible for the water license until i get paid as you know i'm i'm still on the hook how
38:06about by the end of the month and then we part ways this is gone your name's off it i take over
38:14the ground in a month in a month your liability's gone you're paid
38:21rick that's a lot of gold to produce in a month you got a lot of stuff to do so if that's what it's
38:26going to take to mine this ground my way that's that's what we're going to do i'll make it happen

39:12haven't even solution yet but we did test it we know there's gold so i need to get this ground i need
