Tropical Cyclone Fina is moving towards Darwin as a category three system with residents told to enact their emergency plans now. According to the latest forecasts, Tropical Cyclone Fina isn't expected to directly hit the capital city, rather it's tracking over waters between Darwin and the Tiwi Islands. People in the warning area are being told to brace for gale force winds, flash flooding and dangerous tides.

00:00As you can see here in Darwin, the conditions are continuing to rapidly deteriorate as tropical
00:08cyclone FINA continues on its path towards Darwin.
00:12This morning a lot of people woke up to news that the system had intensified to a Category
00:183 system with the Bureau warning of wind gusts in excess of 180 kilometres per hour.
00:25Now aside from those destructive winds, the other major concern with this system is the
00:28incredible amount of rain that it's expected to dump as it continues on its path from the
00:34north coast down towards Darwin this afternoon and into this evening.
00:39An emergency warning was issued this morning following that intensification, that is the
00:43highest warning level and people are being urged to remain indoors where possible and
00:48also to reconsider any travel.
00:51Emergency shelters have been set up and all flights in and out of Darwin have been cancelled
00:56at least for today.
00:58Power and water have also confirmed that a number of homes in Darwin's rural area have
01:03lost power this morning.
01:04But crews were working as quickly as possible to make sure that power was restored to those
01:09areas.
01:10The Northern Territory's Chief Minister, Leah Finocchiaro, has been speaking this morning
01:14just reassuring Territorians that all the preparatory work has been done to make sure our cities and
01:21also our regional and remote communities are well prepared for cyclone FINA.
01:26Of course, regardless of all the planning and preparatory work, these systems do remain incredibly
01:33unpredictable.
01:34So as the weather does continue to deteriorate this afternoon and into this evening, people
01:39are being urged to make sure they keep a very close eye on all the new alerts and warnings
01:44to make sure they're as well prepared as they can be.
