00:00:00end up with a home that you've always dreamed of.
00:00:02Well, that's right, Jan.
00:00:03Now, add to that creating a home that also doubles as a workspace
00:00:06and you got yourself a pretty tricky brief.
00:00:08Well, that is just one of the challenges that the home
00:00:10that we are going to explore had to face.
00:00:12And I tell you what, the results are amazing.
00:00:14Well, surprising is an understatement.
00:00:16I cannot wait to see it.
00:00:17We've got that and loads more coming your way on Better Homes and Gardens.
00:00:22Tonight, Dr Harry meets a cocker spaniel
00:00:25who loves doggy paddle more than dry land.
00:00:27I've no doubt that if you didn't have that lead on,
00:00:31he would just keep going.
00:00:34You don't judge a book by its cover,
00:00:37but can you judge a chef by his pizza?
00:00:39It may not be the perfect round shape,
00:00:43but it's the perfect tasting pizza.
00:00:47Meet the gardener who doesn't believe that less is more.
00:00:51Wow, Jack, this is amazing.
00:00:53You've certainly managed to get a lot into a suburban garden.
00:00:56Hello, boys!
00:00:58Plus, Adam and Charlie are transforming an entertaining space
00:01:01that does nothing into one that does everything.
00:01:05So we need to get this into sections that you can use,
00:01:08almost give each part a different job.
00:01:11This easy DIY project will add a touch of style to any room.
00:01:16Imagine creating and building a beautiful timber table
00:01:19just like this one from scratch.
00:01:21And in the heart of the urban jungle,
00:01:24Graham discovers an apartment block with an actual jungle.
00:01:28And the minute you come through the door,
00:01:30you know you're in for something very special.
00:01:33So much better!
00:01:36I'm on the shores of Morton Bay.
00:01:53It's a great spot.
00:01:54And dogs love coming here because they can have a swim.
00:01:57Not only that, they can play in the sand.
00:01:59In fact, they can swim as far as they like.
00:02:01And that would be a problem because I'm looking for a backcock,
00:02:05a spaniel who really loves to swim.
00:02:13Hello, Dr Harry.
00:02:14Dr Harry.
00:02:15Nice to meet you, Kel.
00:02:16Nice to meet you, too, mate.
00:02:17So what's our problem?
00:02:18Tell me.
00:02:19Oh, well...
00:02:20Indy just swims off to New Zealand.
00:02:22We have to have him on a big, long lead,
00:02:24otherwise he would just keep swimming.
00:02:26Which...
00:02:26He'd need a passport if he goes to New Zealand, wouldn't he?
00:02:29He would, yes.
00:02:30He doesn't know that.
00:02:31We have a life vest for him.
00:02:32Yes.
00:02:33When we put the life vest on him,
00:02:35we have to...
00:02:36Now we have to have a big, long lead
00:02:38because he won't recall.
00:02:40He'll just...
00:02:41...wimmy.
00:02:42Can I encapsulate that by saying
00:02:44you put the life vest on the dog,
00:02:46that's a signal for the dog to head due east...
00:02:48Yes.
00:02:49...towards New Zealand, OK?
00:02:51And nothing works?
00:02:52Well, no.
00:02:53No.
00:02:53Calling him back doesn't work.
00:02:54Are you a good swimmerist?
00:02:55Well, it makes me panic.
00:02:57You know, I'm a bit of...
00:02:58I'm not the best swimmer,
00:02:59but, you know, when he gets out 65 or 70 metres away
00:03:01and you're on the beach,
00:03:02you think you've got to catch up with him.
00:03:03Yeah, I think the first time it happened,
00:03:05it took us both by surprise
00:03:06because he wasn't on a leash the first time.
00:03:08Right.
00:03:09To be honest, I was laughing.
00:03:10I thought it was hilarious
00:03:11until he came back in nearly having a heart attack
00:03:13because he'd had to rescue him.
00:03:16Let's get the best on.
00:03:17Let's stop bucking about and let's see what happens.
00:03:20Let's go.
00:03:21Hey.
00:03:23Come on, mate.
00:03:24Ready?
00:03:24Let's go.
00:03:25There he goes.
00:03:32Well, he's a narrowing to get out there, isn't he?
00:03:35Look at him go.
00:03:35Yeah, I know.
00:03:36Who said dog paddle wasn't good?
00:03:38And he does just go straight out.
00:03:40Yeah.
00:03:40It's like he's just got his swim radar on.
00:03:43Yeah.
00:03:43And nothing you say...
00:03:44It's actually Craig pulling him back in.
00:03:46That's the only reason he'll come back in.
00:03:48And the other thing that I think is a problem
00:03:50is because this big, long lead we've got,
00:03:51I think it's a bit of a safety hazard for him to get tangled in
00:03:54or perhaps one of us to get tangled in.
00:03:56I've no doubt that if you didn't have that lead on,
00:03:59he would just keep going.
00:04:00Here come the two desperados.
00:04:03I don't know who enjoyed it the most.
00:04:04All right, come on, let's join them.
00:04:06All right.
00:04:07Well done, mate.
00:04:08You deserve a medal.
00:04:09Yeah.
00:04:09Come on.
00:04:09OK, what will happen if you now take that vest off?
00:04:16He won't swim out there, no.
00:04:18All right, Craig.
00:04:19It's in your hands, fella.
00:04:21And you undo the clips.
00:04:23I would like to be able to help you with a few things,
00:04:25but basically what you do is very, very good.
00:04:28So let's head home to your place.
00:04:29All right.
00:04:30And I'll share a few tips with you.
00:04:35So the ideal way of controlling the problem
00:04:38would be to get him to come to you, wouldn't it?
00:04:39Yeah.
00:04:40OK.
00:04:41So a recall that would be as good in the water as it is on land.
00:04:46Yes.
00:04:47OK.
00:04:47Yep.
00:04:48Let's start with the very obvious, all right,
00:04:50to get him to come to you now without anything on.
00:04:54I'm going to get you just to call him.
00:05:04When you're ready.
00:05:05Good boy.
00:05:05Did he come?
00:05:07That's it.
00:05:09Good boy.
00:05:09Good boy.
00:05:10So this is good.
00:05:12Keep your eyes focused on his eyes as well.
00:05:15That gives you good control.
00:05:17OK.
00:05:17So the light checker's going on.
00:05:19He, of course, thinks that he's going to go for a swim in the pool.
00:05:22So he's quite excited about all of this.
00:05:24But no, it's part of our training technique.
00:05:28He's straight over to the pool.
00:05:30And backwards and forwards and whining.
00:05:31Why aren't I getting into the pool?
00:05:32Why aren't I getting into the pool?
00:05:34Well, because we don't want you to.
00:05:36We want to train you to come when you've got the vest on.
00:05:40That's the idea.
00:05:41That's the next step.
00:05:42That's the next step.
00:05:43Niddy, come.
00:05:45Good boy.
00:05:46Yes.
00:05:47If you are in the water and you are wet and you've got your head wet, you then have wet
00:05:53hair flopping over that.
00:05:56And goodness gracious me, that's noise cancelling headphones.
00:05:59OK?
00:05:59So I'm not surprised he can't hear anything you say.
00:06:02So how do we overcome that?
00:06:04We make as loud a noise as we possibly can.
00:06:06Mm-hmm.
00:06:07OK.
00:06:07So I have one of these.
00:06:09We need now to assume our previous positions.
00:06:14Niddy, come.
00:06:17Good boy.
00:06:20Hold him there and stay.
00:06:21Stay.
00:06:22The question on everybody's mind is, where to from here?
00:06:25In other words, what's the next step?
00:06:27Yeah.
00:06:27Well, the next step is not simple.
00:06:29It becomes more complicated because it involves using the pool.
00:06:33We want the same sort of situation.
00:06:34One of you at either end of the pool and using the same commands and getting him to swim to
00:06:41you.
00:06:41What if it doesn't work?
00:06:43And it may not work.
00:06:45If it does work, we're going to go down the beach and we're going to do it at the beach.
00:06:48Mm-hmm.
00:06:48And that will be, of course, the acid test.
00:06:50But you need to have a backup just in case, right?
00:06:52There has to be a plan B.
00:06:54And that's to go for this.
00:06:56Yeah.
00:06:56This is actually floating line.
00:06:58Right.
00:06:59See the little device, isn't it?
00:07:00They enable it to float.
00:07:01So rather than having all of that all over the place, around your legs and everywhere
00:07:06else around the place, you can actually wind this.
00:07:09You can hang on to that.
00:07:10You can reel you in a little.
00:07:11And you can wind it.
00:07:12You hold another thing in the middle.
00:07:13You can dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, and you wind it in.
00:07:15So it's a fishing spool wound with floating line.
00:07:20Excellent.
00:07:22Go out a little bit.
00:07:23Oh, wow.
00:07:24I'll just hold on to that.
00:07:25See how it goes out?
00:07:26So I want to bring you back in.
00:07:28I've got to go into reverse.
00:07:30I've got to go like that.
00:07:34At least it's not sort of dangling all over the place.
00:07:36You've got a bit more control.
00:07:38That's providing our whistle doesn't work.
00:07:42So if everything I've tried to teach him fails, I believe it's because of the ears.
00:07:47Okay.
00:07:47Not your fault.
00:07:48Not his fault.
00:07:50Genetics.
00:07:51Thank you for having us.
00:07:52It's been a lovely day.
00:07:54I've enjoyed myself immensely up here in Queensland.
00:07:56I've met a fantastic copper Spaniel.
00:07:59And please keep in touch with me.
00:08:02And tell me how you go.
00:08:03And I dost me lead to you.
00:08:06You are two great gold caters.
00:08:09Keep going.
00:08:10Good luck.

00:09:14Look at that.
00:09:16Still sizzling.
00:09:17The perfect tasting pizza.
00:09:20I just want to take you on a little tour through the garden.
00:09:23So the front is this mass of flowers and foliage.
00:09:33So today, I am doing a very traditional Irish dish that we invented.
00:09:39I'm making pizza.
00:09:40Do you need a pizza oven?
00:09:46No, you don't.
00:09:47You can get a solid piece of stone.
00:09:49You can buy them at Bunnings that go in your oven, and that will work just as good.
00:09:53This little baby has traveled in my caravan, yes, I have a caravan, around the country,
00:09:59and has served my family millions of pizzas.
00:10:02I'm saying millions.
00:10:04So use whatever works for you.
00:10:06Pizza starts with flour.
00:10:07So that's 500 grams.
00:10:09I've got one heaped tablespoon of dry yeast.
00:10:13You can use fresh yeast if you want.
00:10:15And I've got one heaped tablespoon of sugar.
00:10:18And then you need one cup, or maybe a little bit more depending on the flour.
00:10:22We'll work it out as we're needing, of warm water.
00:10:26So what you do is a pinch of flour.
00:10:31We add a yeast.
00:10:33So the yeast is alive.
00:10:35When you add the warm water, it actually reactivates it.
00:10:38And that's what gives you the bubbles.
00:10:40You add your yeast.
00:10:42You add your sugar.
00:10:43The reason you add the sugar is the yeast feeds off the sugar in the flour and makes carbon dioxide.
00:10:49And that's what gives you the bubbles.
00:10:50You're welcome.
00:10:51Cup of warm water.
00:10:52You don't want it too hot because you'll kill the yeast.
00:10:54Just lukewarm.
00:11:00And what you do is get in there and just mix it.
00:11:04The yeast meets the sugar.
00:11:06They have a party.
00:11:07Let's see what happens.
00:11:07So what you want to do now is put that somewhere warm.
00:11:11So I've got a clot on top of the oven.
00:11:13You don't want it too hot because you'll kill the yeast.
00:11:16Just warm.
00:11:17Leave it there for about 10 to 15 minutes and wait and see what happens.
00:11:21It grows.
00:11:23It grows on you.
00:11:24It's like me.
00:11:24Well, well, well.
00:11:31I've made a yeast, baby.
00:11:33Look at that.
00:11:34I'm going to add my yeast first.
00:11:38A little splash of olive oil.
00:11:42Pinch of salt.
00:11:45Now you add your flour.
00:11:46All right.
00:11:53This is the messy bit.
00:11:56Let's get our hook on.
00:11:58There's 10 speeds.
00:12:01Trust me.
00:12:01Start on number one.
00:12:03Increase the speed as it starts to come together.
00:12:08All right.
00:12:12This is where it's a little bit messy.
00:12:14Get a bit of flour on the table.
00:12:16Let's just pour out our dough.
00:12:26Now what I do is I just work it into my flour.
00:12:31Right.
00:12:31Once you've got it into a nice little bread shape, put your dough in a bowl.
00:12:37You cover it with a clot and you put it in a hot place before we divide it up.
00:12:45All right.
00:12:46Give that 10 to 15 minutes.
00:12:50All right.
00:12:51How are we going?
00:12:53Oh, yeah.
00:12:54Doubled.
00:12:55In size.
00:12:55Beautiful.
00:12:59Pop her out.
00:12:59So what I do now is I'm going to cut it into portions.
00:13:08Cut it again in half.
00:13:09Four equal portions.
00:13:18A little bit of water on your hand.
00:13:21You knock it back.
00:13:22And what you do is, and what you do is it's like a claw.
00:13:26It sort of gives you the pizza shape, and that's what gives you the ball.
00:13:30Bit of flour on the tray.
00:13:31And you place that on there to proof.
00:13:35So there's a lot of proof and back and forth, but it's about getting lots of air in there.
00:13:40These go above the stove just to warm for about 10 minutes.
00:13:51Just cover them over.
00:13:52A little bit of nice, light and fluffy.
00:14:04So what you do now is gently peel it off.
00:14:10So that's your pizza base.
00:14:13So what I do is I just knead it like an Irishman making a wall.
00:14:17And then I push it out.
00:14:21Very rustic.
00:14:23If an Irishman's telling you how to make pizza, it's rustic.
00:14:28All right, let's build.
00:14:29So you start with your pizza paddle.
00:14:32So this is what gets your pizza in and out.
00:14:34As I said, oven for 240 under there.
00:14:39All right.
00:14:40Now all we've got to do is build it.
00:14:43So ricotta.
00:14:43Ricotta is one of those very light cheeses.
00:14:48And when it cooks, it sort of hardens up a bit.
00:14:51It's beautiful.
00:14:51So just sprinkle a little bit of ricotta on there.
00:15:00So your beautiful peas in the shell.
00:15:05Just take the top off.
00:15:08So what happens is the peas steam inside the shell.
00:15:11And they're beautiful and sweet.
00:15:13These are small zucchini babies.
00:15:19You rip the flour onto the pizza.
00:15:28Just snap the base off where it grew.
00:15:31Put them on hold.
00:15:32They're that small.
00:15:33They cook really quickly.
00:15:34Splash of olive oil.
00:15:43Just rub that in.
00:15:44Little dots.
00:15:46And now into the oven.
00:15:47If it doesn't come off the paddle.
00:15:49You'd love that, wouldn't you?
00:15:50All right.
00:16:01That's been four and a half minutes.
00:16:05Look at that.
00:16:07Still sizzling.
00:16:08While I did that, I made the exact same pizza and I added some mortadella.
00:16:12So to finish my spring pizza, I've got some fresh mint.
00:16:20I've got some pea shoots.
00:16:24How good does that look?
00:16:26I've got some tarragon.
00:16:27Tarragon or basil adds a beautiful fresh flavour.
00:16:30Make it rain with the tarragon.
00:16:32Now I'll add a little splash of oil.
00:16:35Again, just glisten it up.
00:16:39Bit of lemon.
00:16:40Lemon zest.
00:16:41It may not be the perfect round shape, but it's the perfect tasting pizza.
00:17:04Spring pizza.
00:17:06Bon appetito.
00:17:11A garden so full of plants, you can barely see the soil.
00:17:22Do you have a big deck that doesn't get used?
00:17:24Yep.
00:17:24This one's not even been used as a dance floor.
00:17:26With a few design tips, we'll get it back to its former glory.
00:17:30Look at him, Charlie.
00:17:32I wish I did that on the dancing show.
00:17:35Coming up to the most wonderful time of the year,
00:17:37and the latest issue of Better Home than Gardens magazine
00:17:39is all about celebrating a slow and sweet Christmas.
00:17:43There's two great menus that take the stress out of Christmas cooking.
00:17:47From a prep ahead Christmas with a classic turkey and summery mango trifle,
00:17:52or let the air fryer do the work for you.
00:17:54Plus, Matt Moran serves up a mouth-watering apricot and chestnut stuffed chicken,
00:17:59and an easy toasted couscous, cranberry and feta salad.
00:18:03Pick up the latest issue from newsagents or supermarkets
00:18:06to get bonus cookie cutters to make festive cookies or Christmas craft projects.
00:18:14As a gardener, I love it when I come across something unexpected,
00:18:20like the surprise of discovering a suburban garden like this
00:18:24that is so jam-packed full of plants that you can barely see the soil.
00:18:28Now, this wonderful garden in Frankston, south of Melbourne,
00:18:31is the creation of Jack Semler, horticulturalist and author.
00:18:46Wow, Jack, this is amazing.
00:18:48You've certainly managed to get a lot into a suburban garden.
00:18:51Well, we love plants, so we want to squeeze in as many as we can.
00:18:55Well, this area is almost prairie-like, isn't it?
00:18:58Yes, it's very naturalistic in its feeling,
00:19:01but we've used beautiful Australian plants
00:19:03to really showcase what's climate-compatible to our area.
00:19:06I'm actually spotting some things I don't recognise.
00:19:09This beautiful yellow one here.
00:19:10What's that?
00:19:11That is a gorgeous potilepus that's indigenous to the Mornington Peninsula.
00:19:16Its common name is a showy potilepus,
00:19:18and it just creates so much wonder.
00:19:20All the bugs and bees love it.
00:19:22And it's so, like, yellow's just such a happy colour to have in the garden,
00:19:25and I imagine being indigenous is quite tough, right?
00:19:28Yes, it is so well-suited to this environment.
00:19:31It's really happy in our soils,
00:19:33and it's just so bright.
00:19:35You can see how happy it is.
00:19:36How old is this garden?
00:19:38We've been here for just over four years now,
00:19:41so it's, you know, it can really transform a place.
00:19:43I think that's incredible.
00:19:44So was it a blank canvas four years ago?
00:19:47What were you working with?
00:19:47Yes.
00:19:48Yes, so this was literally concrete and lawn when we moved in.
00:19:52So what are your favourite things about your garden?
00:19:55I really love that it changes so much through the seasons and through the days.
00:20:00So when you come home, it feels like it's changed again.
00:20:03And I love how many insects and birds are drawn to this garden.
00:20:07We want to have beautiful flower displays,
00:20:09but carry on the wonder in different seasons.
00:20:12So we've got successions of different plantings,
00:20:15different seed heads that emerge.
00:20:16We want to really embrace all those seasons in Australian gardens.
00:20:20Well, there's so much to explore, so where should I start?
00:20:23Let's go and see the verge.
00:20:25Brilliant.
00:20:38You really have made the most of every inch of space.
00:20:41Yes.
00:20:42Well, why not have a beautiful biodiverse planting instead of having lawn on your verge?
00:20:47Yeah, I love it.
00:20:48And I imagine it's a big feature for the neighbours too, right?
00:20:51Oh, the neighbours love it.
00:20:52They often see when things flower before I do.
00:20:55And I think a verge can be quite a difficult area to garden in.
00:20:59Has that been part of your thinking?
00:21:01Absolutely.
00:21:01So we're choosing resilient species that don't need a lot of care.
00:21:05We've got some Australian plants together with other things that are going to be really resilient.
00:21:10It's a really hot position on this verge with the road right there.
00:21:13But we've chosen things that bring beauty and wonder and are tough.
00:21:17Now, obviously, the advantage of being on a corner block is you get two verges.
00:21:33Yes, we've grown onto this one.
00:21:35This is incredible and so much colour.
00:21:37Obviously, the poppies are the star of the show.
00:21:39What else have you got going on here?
00:21:40Oh, we've got some old favourites, like some beautiful rose pelargoniums, an Australian, the rock isotone, which is so pretty.
00:21:49So do you allow a lot of these things to self-seed?
00:21:51Yes, so we're going to let the poppies self-seed here and then introduce some other species, some Australian paper daisies, so there's a whole lot of wonder.
00:21:59Oh, I love it.
00:22:00And how old is this verge in terms of planting?
00:22:02It's only four months old, so it's coming along so well.
00:22:05It is amazing to think what you can do in such a short period of time.
00:22:09Well, I'd love to go off and explore a little bit more.
00:22:12Please do.
00:22:13Rise up this morning, smile with the rising sun, three little birds by my doorstep.
00:22:26I just want to take you on a little tour through the garden.
00:22:30So the front is this mass of flowers and foliage.
00:22:33It's kind of like an experimental perennial-style border.
00:22:36So you do get beautiful plants like geoms and salvias in amongst annuals, like the sunflowers, and then these wonderful sort of focal points like this big cardoon, which is just gorgeous.
00:22:48And you can see that there's a real palette of sort of a bit of burgundy foliage and some lemon and orange and purple-coloured flowers.
00:22:55And then as you make your way around the back, you can see through that glass window that you get wonderful glimpses of the garden.
00:23:02The garden also makes beautiful use of one of my favourite plants.
00:23:14So this is the smoke bush, and this is a particular variety called grace.
00:23:18It's got gorgeous new growth that comes through in sort of shades of burgundy, a bit of orange and pink.
00:23:24And have a look at these big smoke-like plumes.
00:23:26And they've been used in a way that they almost frame or hug the house.
00:23:31And Jack uses her horticultural knowledge to create a really interesting form in the plant.
00:23:35So she coppices them, like so cuts them almost to the base every three years.
00:23:40And the result is this multi-trunked form that makes them look almost wild in appearance.
00:23:44If, like Jack, you're a gardener that likes to cram a lot of plants into a small space,
00:23:57then one of the best ways to do it is to go upwards.
00:24:00So this garden makes great use of recycled materials to create climbing frames or fences
00:24:05that not only divide the garden into different rooms, but also create different opportunities for planting.
00:24:10So what a great way to just display beautiful plants like sweet peas or nasturtiums.
00:24:22As you come around the side of the house, the planting style changes.
00:24:26So this is like a distinct garden room.
00:24:28Because it's really hot and dry in this spot, Jack has created a Mediterranean-style courtyard.
00:24:34And there's paving here.
00:24:35So the real feature are these pots.
00:24:36And they have just beautiful sculptural plants in them, things like aloes and agaves.
00:24:42Then they're surrounded by these beautiful cloud-pruned olives.
00:24:45So this is just a beautiful space for outdoor entertaining.
00:24:54Jack's also done a wonderful job of incorporating lots of little areas for relaxation,
00:24:59like this cute little bath nook, and then practical elements like this she shed.
00:25:04I could spend a few hours in there.
00:25:06Jack, you call the garden Heartland.
00:25:15What do they say?
00:25:16Home is where the heart is.
00:25:17My heart is definitely here.
00:25:19All these layers of meaning.
00:25:21You really get to know yourself and really feel your heart in your garden.
00:25:24You do, and it's a beautiful space to be in.
00:25:27And I tell you what, you can spot it for miles down the street.
00:25:30Like, you can always see the crazy plant person, can't you, with all the plants spilling out onto the sidewalk?
00:25:34Oh, you can indeed.
00:25:36I love it.
00:25:37So thank you so much for having us.
00:25:38I think so many people will be adopting this style of planting after seeing your beautiful garden.
00:25:43Oh, such a pleasure.
00:25:44Hello, boys.
00:25:46Coming up, if you need a bit of help transforming your backyard, we might know some people.
00:25:52Sounds exciting.
00:25:53You've got your work cut out for you, boys.
00:25:54Let's go.
00:25:55Woo!
00:25:56Graeme explores an apartment block where the green space outside is as warm and inviting as the inside.
00:26:04And without a doubt, that's a sign.
00:26:06A really good and exciting sign for the future.
00:26:10And this designer side table doesn't require much money or DIY skills.
00:26:15It costs under $75 to make, and you do not need any expensive power tools.
00:26:28This segment proudly brought to you by Bunnings Warehouse.
00:26:33Unwrap the new festive range today.
00:26:37Oh, you know that weather getting warmer feeling, Charlie?
00:26:40Yeah, I love it.
00:26:40The mowers start cranking, and who doesn't like a springtime makeover?
00:26:44Oh, yeah, a little bit of a lift and refresh.
00:26:46Right at the back.
00:26:53Hey.
00:26:53Hello, boys.
00:26:54I'm glad you were coming.
00:26:56How are we, Karen?
00:26:56Nice to meet you.
00:26:57Oh, hello.
00:26:59This is Jessie.
00:27:00She loves to say hi to everyone.
00:27:02Jessie's very happy.
00:27:03Well, I tell you what, this is a very large...
00:27:05Oh, Jessie, I know, look at all this room that you've got to play with.
00:27:08Yes.
00:27:09But what isn't working here, Karen?
00:27:11Pretty much built the deck.
00:27:14The dogs live here.
00:27:15Yep.
00:27:15We generally just walk straight through to the clothesline.
00:27:18I want entertaining, something where we can sit and enjoy the space.
00:27:22So we need to get this into sections that you can use, almost give each part a different job.
00:27:27Yes.
00:27:27Yeah, so basically we need to create a bit more connection.
00:27:29I mean, if we look here, you've got this undercover area.
00:27:32It's pretty limited, and it's right in front of that door.
00:27:34So even if we extended that and maybe lined it up with the corner of the house...
00:27:38Yeah, that'd be really nice.
00:27:39And then maybe round on that side, we can create sort of a private oasis...
00:27:42Oh, yes, please.
00:27:42...through here, you know, so a nice little seating area that you've got in here.
00:27:45That was my original plan, but as you can see, it's actually never happened.
00:27:49And tell me a bit about all the different surfaces.
00:27:51We've got brick, we've got weatherboard, we've got, you know...
00:27:55We've got bits of everything.
00:27:56Yeah.
00:27:56Because these bricks are everywhere throughout the whole house.
00:27:59Yeah.
00:27:59There's all different ornate pieces in the house.
00:28:02Yeah, but maybe we can highlight some of these features.
00:28:04Yeah, perfect.
00:28:04Okay.
00:28:05Sounds exciting.
00:28:06You've got your work cut out for you, boys.
00:28:08Let's get to it.
00:28:12For the pergola, the first thing we need to put up is this ledger board.
00:28:16Now, I'm using some 140 by 45 treated pine for this,
00:28:21and because we've got a timber fascia here,
00:28:23what we need to do is actually find the rafters behind.
00:28:26So that means that I can basically get my bugle screws,
00:28:30and we can fix it in place.
00:28:36With the ledger board up,
00:28:37that gives us somewhere to attach the rafters on this side.
00:28:41Now, I need to put up a perimeter beam here
00:28:43so our rafters have something to sit on on the outside.
00:28:46Unfortunately for me, that means I need to dig a couple of holes.
00:28:56For the posts, I'm using these beautiful 112 by 112 dressed pine.
00:29:03Now, I put it on a stirrup because this is actually H3,
00:29:07so we don't want it to go into the ground.
00:29:08I'll screw it off to the bearer first,
00:29:13and then I'll pull the concrete in.
00:29:19Now, before I fill you in on my paint plan,
00:29:21and even before you put any paint on the walls,
00:29:23there is one step you cannot miss.
00:29:25It doesn't matter what the surface is you're painting,
00:29:27you've got to get it clean.
00:29:28So I'm giving the whole house a hit with a pressure washer.
00:29:30When you've got a lot of different surfaces,
00:29:43a great way to tie them together is with paint.
00:29:45Now, we've got exposed brick here,
00:29:46which I actually really love the tones
00:29:48because it brings a sense of maturity to the space.
00:29:50But I want this area to stand out.
00:29:53So I'm painting this chimney in a colorblind color called Monument,
00:29:56which is going to help to define the space.
00:29:58But I don't want it to stand out too much
00:30:00and be disconnected from the rest of the deck.
00:30:02So the weatherboard's on the other side.
00:30:04They're going to go in the same color.
00:30:17Now, Karen had the right intent
00:30:19by trying to create a secluded little area here,
00:30:22but it didn't quite work.
00:30:24And that's because it was just too similar
00:30:26to the rest of the deck.
00:30:27There was absolutely no reason to come here.
00:30:28So I really want to try and create a destination.
00:30:31And I'm doing that with some screening.
00:30:41Hey, Archie, this bit of timber work,
00:30:42can I be in your carpentry calendar?
00:30:44Yeah, definitely, mate.
00:30:45You'll be on the front cover.
00:30:46No, it's the other side.
00:30:47Yeah, that's perfect.
00:30:49Says Mr. August, doesn't it?
00:30:50For the screens themselves,
00:31:07I'm just using these off-the-shelf,
00:31:09100% recycled plastic panels.
00:31:11Now, the thing I like about these
00:31:13is when the light comes through,
00:31:14they give us a great pattern on the deck.
00:31:16But you don't want to be cutting them
00:31:17to fit your space
00:31:18because you'll ruin the pattern.
00:31:19So we've evenly spaced them
00:31:21and we've got gaps either side.
00:31:23That gives us connection through to the garden,
00:31:25but it keeps it nice and secluded,
00:31:26which is what we're after.
00:31:29Coming up,
00:31:30we show you how to use plants and furniture
00:31:32to add privacy to this space.
00:31:35This is stunning.
00:31:36And divide it into different zones.
00:31:40It's a new green benchmark
00:31:43in high-rise residential design.
00:31:45Could be the way of the future.
00:31:48Sweet, salty, luscious.
00:31:52Just reminds me of back home.

00:32:09So much better.
00:32:13Tapioca pudding is one of my absolute favourite Malaysian desserts.
00:32:21There's only three main ingredients in this dessert.
00:32:25Tapioca pearls,
00:32:28gula malaka or palm sugar,
00:32:30and coconut milk.
00:32:34The rest is to enhance its flavour.
00:32:36With my two cups of sago,
00:32:38I'm going to rinse it really quickly
00:32:40and put it in the boiling water.
00:32:50I'm going to turn that down just a wee bit.
00:32:55So straight away,
00:32:56you have to start mixing this.
00:32:58If you don't keep on stirring it,
00:33:00it's going to clump up.
00:33:02This is the longest part of the recipe,
00:33:04cooking the tapioca pearls.
00:33:09So the tapioca pearls are becoming translucent.
00:33:13It's okay if you see a little bit of white bits in it.
00:33:16It will still keep cooking
00:33:18after you take it off the heat.
00:33:19Now that it's almost ready,
00:33:26I'm going to start rinsing the excess starch off.
00:33:43This goes in the fridge for two to three hours to set.
00:33:46While my tapioca pudding is setting in the fridge,
00:33:57I'm going to start off with my palm sugar syrup.
00:34:00Here, I've grated some palm sugar
00:34:03to just make it easier for it to melt.
00:34:06But if you can't find palm sugar,
00:34:09coconut sugar is just as good.
00:34:11Before I start melting the palm sugar,
00:34:15I use pandan leaf to perfume the syrup.
00:34:20Now pandan leaves are like the vanilla bean in Asia.
00:34:24I'm going to put all of that sugar in
00:34:38and I'm going to put a tiny,
00:34:41a couple of drops of water
00:34:43just to get that going.
00:34:49If you can't find those pandan leaves,
00:34:52it's okay, just leave them out.
00:34:54Now while that's simmering,
00:34:59I'm going to start heating up my coconut milk.
00:35:04Again, I will use a couple more pandan leaves for this
00:35:09to perfume the milk.
00:35:14With the coconut milk,
00:35:20we just want it to come up to a boil,
00:35:24not boil,
00:35:25just to heat it up,
00:35:27just to infuse that pandan leaf into the coconut.
00:35:31This dish calls for salt.
00:35:40So you want that sweetness and that saltiness,
00:35:43like salty caramel, basically.
00:35:45I put a pinch of salt in the coconut milk
00:35:50and I also put a pinch of salt in the syrup.
00:36:02That coconut milk is just coming up to a simmer.
00:36:07I'm going to put the coconut milk in a jug
00:36:15and then pop it in the fridge for it to chill.
00:36:19What I'm doing now is just sprinkling some caster sugar
00:36:36onto slices of banana.
00:36:39I've heated up the pan
00:36:41and I'm going to put about a teaspoon of coconut oil.
00:36:52Leave them in there till they brown
00:36:56or caramelise on one side
00:36:58and then turn them when they're ready.
00:37:07Mmm, they smell so sweet.
00:37:12Cool them down before you serve.
00:37:23Now I'm going to bring
00:37:24all these wonderful elements together.
00:37:28Palm syrup.
00:37:43A few
00:37:44of the golden bananas.
00:37:51I'm salivating already.
00:37:58Sweet, salty, luscious.
00:38:06Just reminds me of back home.

00:39:23where all the action is.
00:39:25You might even be lucky enough
00:39:26to have a rooftop pool.
00:39:28But it does come with its drawbacks
00:39:30like limited green space,
00:39:32which is why these high-rise apartments
00:39:34are a real game-changer,
00:39:37adding a whole new
00:39:38and exciting meaning
00:39:39to the urban jungle.
00:39:46This is the Waterfall Project

00:40:12It's really quite magical.
00:40:14In fact, the lagoon is designed
00:40:15to be a multi-level rainforest.

00:40:24are really important
00:40:26for mental health,
00:40:27well-being and, of course,
00:40:28the happiness of the people,
00:40:29especially when you're surrounded
00:40:31by a hectic urban environment outside.
00:40:36Of course, essential to this picture
00:40:39is water, the elixir of life.
00:40:42And here, whilst the stream is shallow,
00:40:44it's constantly moving,
00:40:46creating those wonderful little ripples,
00:40:48a lovely sound,
00:40:49and, of course, a bubbling brook.
00:40:51And they're all surrounding
00:40:52these huge islands,
00:40:54three of them,
00:40:55mass-planted with philodendrons.
00:40:57Rojo Congo is the variety
00:40:59with this wonderful lush green
00:41:01and purple reverse.
00:41:02That colour is enhanced
00:41:03by the verticals of the cordyline.
00:41:07But without a doubt,
00:41:08the most dominant landscape
00:41:09in this area here
00:41:11is the upper storey
00:41:12of the Eleocarpus grandus.
00:41:15Yes, the blue quondong.
00:41:17Quite a rare tree,
00:41:18but it will ultimately
00:41:19completely take over
00:41:21and create this wonderful atmosphere
00:41:23in this courtyard here.
00:41:25But the upper tree canopy
00:41:26is added to
00:41:28with these beautiful
00:41:29cabbage tree palms.
00:41:31There's giant strelizias,
00:41:34eucalypts,
00:41:35even tree ferns.
00:41:44And for even more wow factor,
00:41:47how about this giant bowl
00:41:48potted up with beautiful,
00:41:51colourful mammalians,
00:41:52all the colours you could imagine.
00:41:53Now, like every garden,
00:41:55this one needs a lot of maintenance,
00:41:58and that's left to the team
00:41:59from Terranova Nursery,
00:42:00and they do a really brilliant job.
00:42:07And talking about
00:42:08harnessing the power of nature,
00:42:11the garden also includes
00:42:12Australia's tallest man-made waterfall,
00:42:16right behind me here,
00:42:17hence the name of the project,
00:42:1822 metres or seven storeys high.
00:42:22It's quite an engineering masterpiece.
00:42:25In fact,
00:42:26the hydrology is really
00:42:27also quite state-of-the-art.
00:42:29There's a 3,500 litre tank below,
00:42:33and of course,
00:42:34a massive pump and filtering system.
00:42:36Very, very clever.
00:42:38It just shows, you know,
00:42:40that when you combine water
00:42:41and plants around our homes,
00:42:43it really helps to cool
00:42:45and calm the environment
00:42:46and the atmosphere,
00:42:48especially in summer
00:42:49when they can also
00:42:50crank up the volume.
00:43:02The visionary behind
00:43:04this incredible project
00:43:05is Iwan Sunito,
00:43:07and I've never seen anything
00:43:09like this in high-rise residential.
00:43:11Where did all this come from?
00:43:14Well, that's a compliment
00:43:15from someone like you, Ken.
00:43:17But it's so revolutionary.
00:43:21You know,
00:43:21I've been doing a lot
00:43:23of these urban resorts
00:43:24since the day of year of 2004,
00:43:28and I thought about
00:43:29where I grew up in Indonesia.
00:43:32So it's in my DNA,
00:43:34because I used to live
00:43:36on top of this river.
00:43:38It was that sounds of water,
00:43:40the babbling brook of water,
00:43:42the sound of trees.
00:43:44Yeah.
00:43:45And I thought that
00:43:46as I developed
00:43:47more and more development
00:43:48over the number of years,
00:43:49I kind of thought
00:43:50that what's green
00:43:53in biophilia
00:43:54is actually great
00:43:55for my residents.
00:43:59Sadly,
00:44:00often with high-rise residential,
00:44:02the landscaping is secondary.
00:44:04It's the last thing
00:44:05that they think of.
00:44:06Yes.
00:44:06The difference here,
00:44:07is that beyond the buildings
00:44:10that I've built before,
00:44:11where we build buildings
00:44:11and we put the landscape.
00:44:13The landscape
00:44:13is the heart of the building.
00:44:18If we all come together
00:44:20as a developer out there,
00:44:21it's beyond a green.
00:44:24It's about us being one
00:44:27with the earth.
00:44:27Yeah.
00:44:28Wouldn't it be amazing
00:44:29that it actually
00:44:30be good for the planet,
00:44:31but also great
00:44:32for our city of Sydney?
00:44:50And who wouldn't love
00:44:51their own outdoor theatre?
00:44:53Comfortable seating,
00:44:54a mega screen.
00:44:55The whole thing is surrounded
00:44:56by a lush green vertical wall
00:44:59and the plants
00:45:00are really simple
00:45:01and they work.
00:45:02That's a secret.
00:45:03Chlorophyllum,
00:45:04spider lily,
00:45:05fishbone fern,
00:45:06can't beat it,
00:45:07tough as nails
00:45:08and of course philodendron
00:45:09and the lovely
00:45:10bright red virgin foliage
00:45:11on the back,
00:45:12variegated ficus,
00:45:14even the pig ficus.
00:45:16Some of the plants
00:45:17are really sculptural,
00:45:18but again,
00:45:18they're toughies
00:45:19like the kentia palm.
00:45:21Loving this atmosphere.
00:45:22The dragon's blood tree,
00:45:24all of this overlooking
00:45:25a fantastic city skyline.
00:45:29And now we've come back
00:45:39to where we've started,
00:45:41at the infinity pool
00:45:43where you might like
00:45:43to have a few laps
00:45:45at the end of the day.
00:45:46And you know,
00:45:47they've even allocated
00:45:48space for plants
00:45:49right up here
00:45:50on the top floor.
00:45:51What we've shown you
00:45:52are the really exciting
00:45:53possibilities
00:45:54that are ahead of us.
00:45:56But in fact,
00:45:57people like Ewan
00:45:57are actually creating
00:45:59these now.
00:46:00And without a doubt,
00:46:02that's a sign,
00:46:03a really good
00:46:04and exciting sign
00:46:05for the future.
00:46:06And everything
00:46:07and anything
00:46:08and the time
00:46:10Imagine creating
00:46:12and building
00:46:13a beautiful timber table
00:46:14just like this one
00:46:15from scratch.
00:46:16But do you know
00:46:17what my favourite part
00:46:17about this table is?
00:46:18It costs under $75
00:46:20to make
00:46:21and you do not need
00:46:21any expensive
00:46:22power tools.
00:46:23It all starts
00:46:24with a few simple
00:46:25bits and pieces
00:46:25from the hardware store.
00:46:33I'm starting
00:46:33with the base
00:46:34and for that
00:46:34I've got a round
00:46:35wooden panel
00:46:36that you can buy
00:46:36off the shelf
00:46:37and I'm attaching
00:46:38some large wooden beads
00:46:40all around
00:46:41the circumference.
00:46:42For that,
00:46:42I'm using
00:46:42a quick set wood glue.
00:46:43These beads
00:46:59are going to add
00:46:59a very cool detail
00:47:00to the base
00:47:01and I've found
00:47:02the easiest way
00:47:03to attach them
00:47:04is to use glue
00:47:05in the top
00:47:06of either
00:47:08an old coffee cup
00:47:09or just a shallow dish
00:47:10and that way
00:47:10you can just dab it in
00:47:12get exactly
00:47:12the right amount
00:47:13and then pop it
00:47:14straight onto the base.
00:47:22The beads went on
00:47:23pretty quickly
00:47:24and to make sure
00:47:25that they're stable
00:47:25I'm actually going to
00:47:26sandwich them
00:47:27between another board
00:47:28so that'll go on
00:47:29there like that.
00:47:30The first thing
00:47:30I need to do
00:47:31is just put this
00:47:32packer
00:47:32in the middle
00:47:33and then I can
00:47:37glue this top piece on.
00:47:43This is going to be a pedestal
00:47:52side table
00:47:53so it's going to have
00:47:54one central leg
00:47:55and to create that
00:47:57I'm using these
00:47:57off-the-shelf furniture legs.
00:47:59Now these come in
00:48:00lots of different shapes
00:48:01and sizes
00:48:02which is really handy
00:48:03because it means
00:48:03you can play around
00:48:05with different arrangements
00:48:07so once you stack them up
00:48:09and you're happy
00:48:09with how they look
00:48:10you can start to glue them together
00:48:12using the Kwikset wood glue again
00:48:14and of course
00:48:15you need to work out
00:48:16when you start
00:48:17where your centre point is
00:48:18otherwise you're going to have
00:48:19a very wonky leg
00:48:20on your table.
00:48:26Now this glue
00:48:27is really strong
00:48:28so we don't need
00:48:29a rod
00:48:30down the centre
00:48:31of the table leg
00:48:32but what I am doing
00:48:33is gluing
00:48:34both pieces
00:48:35of timber
00:48:37each time
00:48:38I attach them.
00:48:38This is my place
00:48:40my house
00:48:41my rooms
00:48:42This is my place
00:48:46my house
00:48:47my rooms
00:48:49Do you see me
00:48:52Feel me
00:48:53Don't think you do
00:48:54Cause this is my place
00:48:58my heart
00:48:59my rooms
00:49:01Alright now the glue
00:49:03on the leg is dry
00:49:04I can get to work
00:49:06on the top
00:49:07I've made another
00:49:08circle
00:49:09just like the base
00:49:11but this time
00:49:12I'm using
00:49:13a bigger
00:49:14piece
00:49:15for the very top
00:49:16just for practical reasons
00:49:18so there's a bit more
00:49:18surface area
00:49:19so you can pop your cocktail there
00:49:20or your cup of tea
00:49:21whatever you prefer
00:49:22Sometimes I wait up
00:49:25late to see
00:49:27the sun
00:49:28come round
00:49:30It always seems
00:49:33so simple
00:49:34not shredded
00:49:36down
00:49:37Now you could
00:49:50leave the table
00:49:51just as it is
00:49:52like this
00:49:52but I'm going to add
00:49:53another layer of detail
00:49:55that's going to tie in
00:49:56with these rounded shapes
00:49:57at the top
00:49:58and the bottom
00:49:58so
00:49:59I'm using
00:49:59some timber beads
00:50:01in different shapes
00:50:02and sizes
00:50:02and I'm just threading them
00:50:03onto some thin elastic
00:50:05like this
00:50:06and that way
00:50:07I'll be able to
00:50:08tie them
00:50:09around
00:50:10the post
00:50:11like this
00:50:12but before I do that
00:50:15I'm going to give
00:50:15the whole table
00:50:16a coat of wax
00:50:17because I love the look
00:50:18of this raw timber
00:50:19and that will help
00:50:20to preserve it
00:50:20my love
00:50:22set me free
00:50:24and leave me out
00:50:26this mystery
00:50:27just show me the way
00:50:30to get my life again
00:50:33cause you can't handle me
00:50:36say to my love
00:50:38can't you see
00:50:39baby you just set me free
00:50:43I'm going to love
00:50:45and that's it
00:50:55one very unique table
00:50:57that was pretty simple
00:50:58to create
00:50:58and once you have
00:50:59this technique down
00:51:00you can go to town
00:51:02use your imagination
00:51:03and create whatever you like
00:51:04for my next one
00:51:05I'm doing a slightly larger table
00:51:07and it's going to have
00:51:08three legs
00:51:08instead of one
00:51:09coming up
00:51:24is it a house
00:51:25is it a shed
00:51:26nope
00:51:27it's a modern interpretation
00:51:28of both
00:51:29and it's quintessentially Australia
00:51:31and right on trend
00:51:32and every good backyard makeover
00:51:35needs a bit of a road test
00:51:37right let me try it
00:51:39how do you feel
00:51:40jeez I feel like
00:51:41I'm in an oasis
00:51:41at the moment
00:51:42an oasis
00:51:43no oasis
00:51:43yeah
00:51:44so much better
00:51:49we're turning Karen's big
00:51:53but unused deck
00:51:55into an entertaining space
00:51:56with loads of different zones
00:51:58while Charlie works on the painting
00:52:00I'm finishing off the pergola
00:52:02so we're not going to be
00:52:03putting a roof on this pergola
00:52:05we're going to be keeping it open
00:52:06and we're using these
00:52:0740 by 19
00:52:08batons
00:52:09and basically
00:52:10I'll be keeping a 40 mil gap
00:52:11in between each one
00:52:13that way
00:52:14we still create shade
00:52:16under the dining area
00:52:17but it will allow that beautiful
00:52:18filtered light
00:52:19to come through
00:52:20and to tie it in with the pergola
00:52:26we're painting Karen's old furniture
00:52:28the same colour
00:52:29a new lick of paint
00:52:30will really bring it back to life
00:52:32to balance off the nice little seating nook
00:52:36we've got on the other side of the deck
00:52:38I want to create an area here
00:52:39so this space also becomes useful
00:52:41so I'm going to be doing a barbecue area
00:52:43and like I did on the other side
00:52:44with the screens
00:52:45I'm going to create a bit of a barrier
00:52:46from the garden
00:52:47but this time
00:52:48I'm going to be using pots
00:52:49I'm using really big white troughs
00:52:56to tie in with the colour scheme
00:52:58on Adam's pergola
00:52:59for the plants for my troughs
00:53:06I'm using the good old lily pilly
00:53:08now this will turn
00:53:09into quite a large tree
00:53:11but if you keep it clipped
00:53:12it can stay at 2 metres quite happily
00:53:14as long as it's got a big enough pot
00:53:16now I want to screen through here
00:53:18because we've got the garage
00:53:19and I want that to go away
00:53:20and I'm going to return it down this side
00:53:22just to mirror what we've got
00:53:23on the other side of the deck
00:53:24I see this quite a lot
00:53:41in gardens I go to
00:53:43where people start to collect succulents
00:53:44and then they get more and more
00:53:46and they end up with a collection
00:53:47like Cairns
00:53:48which each individual plant
00:53:49is quite nice
00:53:50but the display
00:53:51well it's nothing to write home about
00:53:52so I'm going to put it
00:53:54into pots
00:53:54consolidate it all
00:53:55put them on the walls
00:53:56to really show them off
00:53:57when you're growing succulents
00:53:58there's a few things you need to do
00:54:00take your pot
00:54:01and get some extra holes
00:54:02into the bottom
00:54:03that's going to increase the drainage
00:54:04I also just use
00:54:05a normal regular potting mix
00:54:07but I add in some perlite
00:54:08up to about 25%
00:54:09that's the white stuff there
00:54:10it's just going to make sure
00:54:12the plant roots
00:54:12don't get too wet
00:54:14there's lots of different types here
00:54:15I'm going to be supplementing
00:54:16all the ones that Cairns got
00:54:17like these house leeks
00:54:18with some larger examples
00:54:20some crashulas
00:54:20just to make it look
00:54:21as nice as possible
00:54:22I'm going to ram it all in there
00:54:23get it really nice and tight
00:54:25I'm not worried about overcrowding it
00:54:27because when it starts to spill over
00:54:28you can snip them off
00:54:29and you get new plants
00:54:30to mount our trough pots on the wall
00:54:38we're just using these simple brackets
00:54:39that we can fix underneath
00:54:41I've picked a colour
00:54:42that ties in with our new brickwork
00:54:44so it drags it across
00:54:45and helps to break up the bricks
00:54:47it's a really great way
00:54:48to display your succulents
00:54:50and much nicer
00:54:51than an old table
00:54:52where's this where I'm going to go
00:54:54up the top
00:54:54I think
00:54:55there's a bear in there
00:55:06alright, into the corner
00:55:08you have green thumbs in no time
00:55:14hey, I like it
00:55:15when you've got a big deck like this
00:55:16it is really important
00:55:17to fill it out with lots of plants
00:55:19so it feels like it's part of the garden
00:55:20in the corners
00:55:21you can get much more height
00:55:23and layer it up too
00:55:24so bring it right down
00:55:25to the smaller pots
00:55:26in areas like this
00:55:27where you're trying to show off things
00:55:28on the wall
00:55:28try and keep it nice and low
00:55:30all the plants I'm selecting
00:55:34for this area
00:55:35have got a tropical theme to it
00:55:37it's not just because I like the look
00:55:38we're in a really low light level here
00:55:40so we're relying on the foliage
00:55:42to give us interest
00:55:42rather than flowers
00:55:43which just aren't going to work
00:55:45every big dining table
00:55:50needs a chandelier above it
00:55:51and what better than a green one
00:55:52and I'm using Ripsalis
00:55:53now these are only watering once a week
00:55:55and when you do do it
00:55:56I suggest nothing on the table underneath
00:55:58oh repurposed Charlie
00:56:09love it
00:56:10how good did it is Ches
00:56:20or just a lick of paint ads
00:56:22they've come up an absolute treat
00:56:23I'll tell you what else
00:56:24has come up an absolute treat
00:56:25this corner
00:56:26it's nice isn't it
00:56:27it's so secluded
00:56:28I love it
00:56:29hey do you want to
00:56:30back to wall
00:56:31do you want them facing each other
00:56:32maybe
00:56:32wait let me try it
00:56:34how do you feel
00:56:35jeez I feel like I'm in an oasis
00:56:37at the moment
00:56:38an oasis
00:56:38oh we're almost ready
00:56:53we're just going to see what Karen thinks
00:56:54do you reckon
00:56:55yes
00:56:55all right call her in
00:56:56let's go
00:56:56Karen
00:56:56yeah
00:56:58come on
00:56:59come on have a look
00:56:59come on
00:57:03come up
00:57:03come on
00:57:04oh my god
00:57:05what the
00:57:08we've been busy
00:57:09we've been busy
00:57:11a little bit different
00:57:13I never get speechless
00:57:15this is
00:57:15yes
00:57:17what do you reckon of your little area
00:57:19do you think you're going to use this now
00:57:20I don't even know where to look
00:57:22so you like the way we painted the chimney
00:57:25it ties in with the house
00:57:26we've used a really good quality paint there
00:57:28but we haven't taken away from the brickwork
00:57:29I love that colour
00:57:31wow
00:57:33oh my god
00:57:34all my succulents
00:57:35hey look at the privacy
00:57:36I can't even see you through there Karen
00:57:38and then on the other side
00:57:41we've also got this barbecue area
00:57:42so you've got two separate zones
00:57:43you can now come out and use this
00:57:45and it ties perfectly with Adam's dining table
00:57:47that is
00:57:49and so that was the idea
00:57:50to extend this roof space
00:57:51but obviously we want to close it in
00:57:53because we still want it to be open
00:57:54so we use the timber slats
00:57:55and it allows this beautiful filtered light
00:57:57to shine through
00:57:58hey
00:57:59you guys want to come over for dinner
00:58:00yeah
00:58:00well that's why there's a barbie out
00:58:02bring your friends
00:58:03I've got plenty of room for all your friends now
00:58:05what do you mean come over
00:58:06we're already here Karen
00:58:07thank you so much
00:58:13seriously this is exactly
00:58:16I don't know how you guys got in my brain
00:58:18but like
00:58:19that's perfect
00:58:21enjoy Karen
00:58:22absolutely perfect
00:58:23nice
00:58:27let's have some food
00:58:28why not
00:58:29we show you through an absolutely magnificent family home
00:58:42which bridges the gap between high-end architecture and cost-saving ideas
00:58:46the latest issue of the Better Homes and Gardens magazine is out now
00:58:51just in time for Christmas
00:58:53go floral with your festive decorations
00:58:55if you've got a green thumb like me
00:58:57use your favourite blooms from your garden
00:58:59or you can even use faux flowers
00:59:01save money on gifts by propagating plants to share with loved ones
00:59:04the best thing is
00:59:05even beginner gardeners will be able to keep these varieties alive
00:59:08and find out which fast-growing seeds to plant now for the best summer salads you've ever had
00:59:12get the latest issue of the Better Homes and Gardens magazine from your local supermarket or newsagent
00:59:17and you'll get bonus cookie cutters and stamps perfect for craft or festive treats
00:59:24so what if I told you we weren't going to an amazing house but rather an amazing shed
00:59:33yeah apparently the owners of this house wanted a place that could double as a warehouse a factory for their for their furniture business
00:59:40well it's a very cool design and one of the great benefits is you can actually just drive into the bottom level
00:59:46that's pretty cool
00:59:47look at this
00:59:48spend the week riding in apology I'll never say
00:59:52now from the outside it's a very simple almost industrial type facade but it's based on the old beach camera typology
01:00:02where all the living spaces are lifted off the ground
01:00:05it's actually called the shed house and with a big level block like this would have been very easy for them to build a house with a separate shed
01:00:11but instead they wanted to incorporate it into the design which is made possible by having those living spaces upstairs
01:00:16but they've clad it in shed type materials it's zinc allume or corrugated steel
01:00:21it's maintenance free and in terms of budget costs a little more than two coats of paint
01:00:25and it's quintessentially Australia
01:00:27and right on trend
01:00:34so the beauty of having all of those living spaces upstairs Pete is that you're left with this incredibly multi-functional area down here
01:00:42you've got the garage you've got room for storage for the owners furniture business and then you've got a photography studio slash party area on the other side
01:00:49but the real feature down here is the cutout in the plan that central courtyard bringing light down through the levels into this otherwise dark space
01:00:58it's a very very ancient idea having a courtyard home but the real feature with that is all the spaces that peel off it have access to that greenery
01:01:06Jo there's a real simple clarity to the plan and some significant Japanese overtones
01:01:19we just went past the Japanese soaking bath the gorgeous Japanese maple here in the courtyard
01:01:23as well as outdoor space in the centre we've still got a rear yard and a swimming pool
01:01:27but it's weird even though we've come down that corridor we're actually still in the shed and I love what they have done here with this ceiling finish
01:01:33that's the formwork for the slab above but instead of removing it they've kept it
01:01:38well they've actually celebrated it with some up lighting
01:01:44all right
01:01:46upstairs
01:01:47wow talk about being wrapped up in the warmth of timber
01:01:50well I'm going to check out some of this top floor
01:01:53and I'm going to find one of the owners
01:02:03hello Steve how are you
01:02:06good thank you Jo good
01:02:07it's so nice to meet you I'm absolutely bursting to know what you told the architect for your brief for this home
01:02:13so we wanted to keep it quite open
01:02:15so we said to Toby the architect we don't barbecue
01:02:19our kids like to swim
01:02:21we have a bad work-life balance
01:02:23and we like the industrial style
01:02:25one of the really unique parts of the home was you wanted a big shed
01:02:28so you incorporated it into the design
01:02:31yes so once again that was the idea of the architect
01:02:33he said why don't we move the living space upstairs
01:02:35and you can have this undefined space downstairs
01:02:38you had the experience that a lot of people do when they're about to build
01:02:41where the cost of building is going up
01:02:43you know quite vastly at the moment
01:02:46a lot of the frills any of the extra things we'd hoped for
01:02:48we had to completely abandon those
01:02:50but it still wasn't enough of course
01:02:52so we had to do other efficiencies
01:02:55so for example you see the concrete floor here
01:02:58normally if you want a concrete floor
01:03:00as you know you'd put a topping slab on the top
01:03:02after the build has finished
01:03:03but in this case to save money
01:03:05probably about $100,000
01:03:07we just said we accept that there's going to be problems
01:03:10and we'll just say that that's part of the identity of the building
01:03:13that's like a souvenir
01:03:14so also you can see the ceiling
01:03:16and then the walls downstairs are made of black butt plywood
01:03:19so by choosing the more efficient method we save cost
01:03:22and you also get this kind of wild look
01:03:24yeah well congratulations you've come up with a collaborative effort by everyone in the end
01:03:29it's a really fabulous design and a beautiful home
01:03:32very kind of you to say thank you Jo
01:03:34I want you to imagine a Northstone Crosses grid
01:03:46that's basically the layout of this house
01:03:49with the four bedrooms at the corner of that grid
01:03:52what that means is they have their own individual aspect
01:03:54either overlooking the street or the rear yard
01:03:57and then coming together in the more central communal areas
01:04:00the living areas
01:04:01prior to place in the centre of that grid
01:04:03is you guessed it
01:04:04the open courtyard
01:04:05isn't it gorgeous to come into a kitchen that's not white in every direction that you look in
01:04:15you're right
01:04:16now there's some real economical cost savings in the material choices in this kitchen
01:04:20the stone
01:04:21the stone it's rhyolite a form of granite
01:04:24they only use 20 millimetres thick
01:04:26that's all you need
01:04:27and it's easy to work
01:04:28it's lighter to lift
01:04:29other money saving ideas
01:04:30look at these finishes on all the cabinetry
01:04:33used as the ceiling
01:04:34it's actually black butt plywood
01:04:36which would normally be flooring
01:04:37it's the walls downstairs
01:04:38again they've saved money by thinking about all the places that they could use this
01:04:42no that aesthetic is also carried through the feature kitchen bench
01:04:46it's also black butt
01:04:48so simply by ordering a little bit more of that structural timber
01:04:51laminating it together
01:04:53they've come up with this beautiful piece
01:04:54and they've celebrated these markings as character
01:04:56as opposed to always going for perfection
01:04:59gee there's a lesson for all of us in that isn't there
01:05:01that's why you work with me
01:05:02so Pete I know that the owners designed furniture
01:05:16but boy it's reflected in every single room that you come into in the home
01:05:20I mean pieces like this dining table or the cabinets or lights that they've tweaked
01:05:25everything is absolutely exquisite
01:05:27but we keep going on about the cost savings that they have
01:05:30I mean look at this slab
01:05:31all key features
01:05:33the concrete, the furniture and the lighting
01:05:35you've got to remember
01:05:36this is only 150 square metres this home
01:05:39which is 60% smaller
01:05:41than this standard Australian 4 bedroom home
01:05:52it's called the Shed House
01:05:53but I think that's misleading
01:05:54this is an amazing piece of architecture
01:05:56it is
01:05:57and so much of it focuses around this beautiful internal courtyard
01:06:00which we can enjoy up here
01:06:02with once again some economical wire fencing for the balustrade
01:06:06so many great ideas in this place
01:06:08the other cool thing is the whole house was approved
01:06:10without going through council
01:06:12it was privately certified under a compliant development certificate
01:06:15now that's worth checking out if you're doing a new build or renovation
01:06:18if you're under the height limit and you're adhering to the setbacks
01:06:21it could be your own little bridge over troubled waters in terms of council approval
01:06:25oh we have to finish on that note
01:06:27we'll see you next week with more Better Homes and Gardens
01:06:29bye bye
01:06:31next time
01:06:33we're celebrating the most wonderful time of year
01:06:35country style
01:06:37colin and clarissa's ham salad is a real peach
01:06:45but their festive dessert is an absolute showstopper
01:06:49this is decadence on a board
01:06:51a dessert board
01:06:53whether you're celebrating at home or on the road
01:06:57this project puts the tray into tradie
01:07:00it's kind of like a tradie's toolbox
01:07:02but for entertaining
01:07:04deck the halls on a Scrooge level budget
01:07:07you really don't need to spend a lot of money
01:07:09to bring on the Christmas cheer at your place
01:07:11plus could you be unwrapping your new house on Christmas morning?
01:07:16this home they're about to show you through
01:07:18I feel like this transports us straight to Palm Springs
01:07:21and who needs reindeer when you've got these guys to help out?
01:07:28we call them working dogs
01:07:30but to them it's not work
01:07:32this is their life
01:07:33this is their passion
01:07:35that's next time on a very special Better Homes and Gardens
