00:22Just have warning markers for the firearms.
00:25Vehicle's done!

01:20Hard cover...
01:21To help me out for the stinger.
01:22...as dangerous drivers...

01:24Down!
01:25Down!
01:26...and criminals on the run...
01:27Driver down there...
01:28Put lives at risk.
01:29It's an abort abort.
01:30There's too many tourists around.
01:31He's up the curve.
01:32He's nearly run over a pedestrian.
01:33There's a suspected...
01:34...clone vehicle...
01:35...sighted...
01:36...has hit on the floor.
01:37It's an abort abort.
01:38It's an abort abort.
01:39There's too many tourists around.
01:40He's up the curve.
01:41He's nearly run over a pedestrian.
01:42There's a suspected...
01:43...clone vehicle...
01:44...sighted...
01:45...has hit upon some cameras.
01:47Southbound.
01:48Yeah!
01:49It's on the hot list.
01:50Right, OK.
01:51It's dangerous driving.
01:52It's a busy Saturday morning in June.
01:54You need to be aware...
01:55...we've got details on what's going on.
01:56You need to be aware of...
01:57...we've got details on what we're going on.
01:58You need to be aware of...
01:59...we've got details on what's going on.
02:00There's a suspected that a clone vehicle sighted has hit upon some cameras southbound.
02:06It's on the hot list, right, OK. It's dangerous driving.
02:10It's a busy Saturday morning in June.
02:13You need to be aware of what details of a stolen vehicle that's travelling down from Chesterfield.
02:20Good.
02:22Overnight last night from outside Keepers' address in Belper.
02:28There are vehicles that just hit up.
02:32Near Derby, a stolen motorbike has triggered police cameras.
02:37Sergeant Scott Riley is on the lookout.
02:39Yeah, it's a black KTM 125 motorcycle. It was stolen overnight.
02:44With summer a peak time for crime, Scott and his team are under constant pressure.
02:51The course of the time of year it is, there are more people out there offending
02:55with less and less officers to deal with that offending.
03:00The briefing this morning, the chief's given a message out that one day this week
03:04we've had a busier day in calls for service than we have on a New Year's Eve.
03:09So at the minute, demand is unprecedented.
03:12As Scott continues searching for the stolen motorbike...
03:19Oskatango, hold the phone.
03:22We've got a vehicle coming to stop in the eye, but have we got any other tactical resources this way?
03:28NA, Oskatango.
03:2920 miles away, traffic cop Martin Carter is tailing a fail-to-stop driver, but needs back up.
03:38The reason for this stop is it was not disclaiming it from the registration plate.
03:44I don't see the driver, he doesn't know.
03:46Number of occupants.
03:48I sit in, I'll continue the shoot.
03:52Form and a pursuit is authorised.
03:54Keep me up to date with dynamic risk assessment, please.
03:56Control runs a check on the car's number plate.
04:00Vehicle showing no insurance.
04:04A clone car is a car with exactly the same number plates of a different car.
04:10Clone vehicles aren't always stolen.
04:12They could be a vehicle that's not insured.
04:15Traffic is moderate.
04:18With the driver taking more risks.
04:20Standby.
04:22Now, Chesterfield Road still.
04:24Don't be taking the wrong side of the road.
04:25It's still safe to continue.
04:27Scott coordinates other units to help Martin.
04:31Going towards Heath.
04:33And Ake, we'll have a local Stinger, please.
04:34Here I thought.
04:35I'm heading to Poulterton.
04:37I'm just running the M1 now.
04:40Traffic cop Alex Head is joining the pursuit.
04:434-3, you do Riley Hill.
04:44I'll do towards A617, Poulterton.
04:48Yes, sir.
04:48Yes, sir.
04:49On the tactical resources, have we got gaming?
04:53Have we got any Stingers identified?
04:55There'll be a Stinger site at the top of the road where the old garage was.
05:00Perfect.
05:02The plan is to set a trap and puncture the car's tyres.
05:06I'm currently trying to get some Stinger sites set up further up ahead to try and bring this car to a stop before it crashes and kills you.
05:13With the pursuit heading towards him, Scott gets ready to strike.
05:22We're heading into a residential area.
05:25Standby.
05:26Screen is now 1-0-0.
05:29As Scott sets the trap, the suspect car approaches at nearly 80 miles an hour.
05:35This pursuit's dangerous.
05:37A lot of people are out.
05:38And the further we get down that road, we're getting to more populated residential areas where people can be crossing the road, children can be crossing the road.
05:46The driver turns off in another direction.
05:59He's away from now.
06:01He's off the curb.
06:03Lowering him.
06:04The RA medium.
06:06General directions.
06:08Black.
06:08Alex's head positions himself on an alternate route.
06:18The vehicle's been doing loops around this area on the top of this hill up here.
06:23So I'm just floating up here just in the off chance.
06:27Once again, the driver turns off.
06:30But this time towards a local town.
06:34Entering Blackwell.
06:35It's 3-0 speed limit.
06:37Still Blackwell lane.
06:39Standby.
06:40They say right, right, right.
06:41If somebody steps out on that road, if that car mounts a pavement, if it loses control, all of a sudden we can be into a situation where police officers are involved in causing the death of somebody.
06:53Finish the media.
06:54Right, right, right, right.
06:58Extremely dangerous in a residential area.
07:01The vehicle is a temporary fault.
07:03He's up the curb.
07:04It's an abort, abort, abort, abort, abort, abort.
07:08He's nearly run over a pedestrian.
07:11Just to clarify, he's nearly...
07:13He's run over a pedestrian.
07:15He hasn't run over a pedestrian.
07:16It's a narrow miss.
07:17He's an abort.
07:18P.C. Carter's aborted.
07:26Nothing is worth getting a member of the public killed or seriously injured for.
07:32It is really frustrating what our job is to persevere.
07:38Scott and the team comb the area.
07:40Hello.
07:44You've not seen a red car come down here at all, have you?
07:46So, make a model, mate, and colour.
07:49It's been so good.
07:50Lovely.
07:51He comes back on PNC as a red.
07:54I'm glad.
07:55Look at that little girl.
07:57From Tango Seraphore, I spoke to public.
08:01They've not seen him, so I'm wondering if he's cut into the estate.
08:04Yeah, I've seen him.
08:05In that case, I'm going to head down to the part of a car area, up there, unless anyone
08:09else is down there.
08:13As Alex continues the search...
08:16Just doing donuts.
08:18..a different car catches his attention.
08:24Stop! Stop! Stop!
08:31Coming up, as one pursuit leads to another...
08:34I know, Tango, four, three, I've got a vehicle.
08:35I've got a vehicle failing.
08:36Stop!
08:36Of course they have.
08:37More dangerous driving puts lives at risk.
08:40There's too many tourists around.
08:42It's actually going off-road.
08:44Contact, contact.
08:45And when a reported stolen car is spotted...
08:48..the vehicle's increasing.
08:50It could be...
08:50..the vehicle's reacting to the power of the president.
08:53Officers hunt down a suspect.
08:55I've done nothing wrong.
08:56You're arresting me for no reason.
09:04..to try and bring this car to the stop before he crashes and kills him.
09:16It's a Saturday morning in June.
09:19We're heading into a residential area.
09:21Amidst a summer surge in crime,
09:24Sergeant Scott Riley and his team have already been involved in one pursuit.
09:28He's up the curve.
09:31It's an abort-abort.
09:32He's nearly run over a pedestrian.
09:36While searching for a fail-to-stop driver...
09:40Just doing donuts.
09:44Traffic cop Alex Head spots a car doing burnouts in the middle of the road.
09:48Stop! Stop! Stop!
09:56An eight, ten, no, four, three, I've got a vehicle.
09:59Of course they have.
10:01In the space of 40 minutes,
10:04officers are forced into a pursuit for the second time.
10:07Can I please have authority to pursue?
10:09DRA is currently medium.
10:11The driver instantly has seen me.
10:14He's panicked.
10:15He knows he's just messed up.
10:16And that's why he's making off, right now.
10:19Well, it's a BMW, one series in black.
10:21We've got VRM.
10:23Vehicle is three up.
10:25Just ran this vehicle through Niche.
10:27He's all the small driver and uninsured.
10:29Standby.
10:30Speed is at 6-0 in this...
10:326-0.
10:35Scott sets a trap to puncture the car's tyres.
10:39Hard cover.
10:40Talk me out for the stinger.
10:43Standby.
10:43It's just dived off.
10:46Down an unnamed road.
10:51Everything lost at this time.
10:58When you get in a car, it's a one or two-ton killing machine.
11:02If you lose control of it,
11:03you're potentially going to kill another person.
11:05I think it's very terrifying.
11:06And it also presents a risk for other road users.
11:10We're going back down now towards Hardwick.
11:13Male driver.
11:15Across the...
11:15Where heat post is.
11:17If you head down there and take the next left,
11:20that's where the vehicle will be coming out.
11:22N8 from 4-3.
11:24It's a total loss at this time.
11:25But despite the driver's disappearance,
11:32Scott and Alex aren't giving up.
11:35Look like somebody wants me to get a stinger on a vehicle today.
11:39Have you had a car go past here?
11:43Have you had a car go past here at speed?
11:51Just had members of the public.
11:53It's not gone past them,
11:55so I think it will have probably gone into Hardwick Park.
11:58Alex follows the vehicle onto the grounds
12:00of a busy National Trust property.
12:12Excuse me, ma'am.
12:13Has a car gone past here at speed, a black car?
12:15Yeah.
12:16It was a black BMW.
12:17With the smell pretty bad.
12:17Yeah. Excellent, yeah.
12:20N8, 10, 0, 4-3.
12:21It's confirmed that this BMW 1 Series
12:23has come through Hardwick Park.
12:25Contact, contact with that vehicle.
12:38It's in a port of port.
12:40There's too many tourists around.
12:42It's actually going off-road.
12:44There's sheep and livestock in the fields.
12:47And I'm going to need to know where this road comes out.
12:49There was an exit loop.
12:51So we've lost the vehicle this time.
12:53I'm not about to start pursuing something
12:56at a tourist hotspot.
12:58It just would have ended in absolute disaster.
13:01What often happens in a pursuit,
13:04the adrenaline starts kicking in.
13:06If you're not used to it and you're not trained,
13:08then that's where the mistakes start happening.
13:11Unfortunately, in a high-powered car like that,
13:13there's every likelihood he's going to end up
13:15hurting himself and potentially somebody else.
13:17A vehicle check reveals the name of two brothers
13:23linked to the car.
13:26We have a steady flow of intel
13:27about people who shouldn't be driving.
13:30We're putting two and two together at the moment
13:31and hopefully we're going to find the vehicle.
13:36Within less than an hour,
13:38Scott and the team have had two fail-to stops.
13:41As they continue to search
13:44north-east Derbyshire for the wanted vehicles...
13:47We have currently got a vehicle...
13:49It's activating AMPR cameras.
13:51..30 miles west, in the Peak District,
13:54police cameras have picked up a third wanted car.
13:57It's got a stolen mark on it.
14:00Traffic cop Andy Swift gets behind it.
14:02The car was stolen from a building supply store.
14:22The car is the temporary block by a postal van.
14:23I'm not trying to play catch with that vehicle.
14:24Standby.
14:52They'll still have to go on road down.
14:53They'll have to go on.
14:54When you are chasing after people,
14:57you're probably chasing after someone
14:58that probably knows the area better than you.
14:59So you're always at a bit of a disadvantage.
15:01It is quite easy for someone to lose you
15:03within two or three turns
15:05if you can't keep up with them
15:07or you get blocked by traffic.
15:09Exactly down there.
15:10Yeah, taking a right, right, right
15:11in the direction of the chin.
15:12You've lost them.
15:16Hayfield Road East.
15:17Hayfield Road East.
15:18Standby.
15:19Good.
15:20We are on a 624.
15:24Speed is 6-0 and a 4-0.
15:26Entry is 3-0.
15:30The DR8 is temporarily high and back to low
15:33when it overtakes for the vehicle.
15:35The vehicle is overtaking on solid bikes.
15:37Half on the correct side of the road,
15:38the DR8 is medium.
15:41I am directly behind this vehicle again.
15:46Vehicle overtakes on the opposing carriageway.
15:49Won't fail the vehicle.
15:50Right.
15:52It scares me to think
15:53that there's young lads out there
15:54that will put themselves
15:55and all the members of the public
15:56at such high risk.
15:57If they go out and they crash the car
15:58and ultimately,
15:59if they hurt themselves
16:00or kill themselves,
16:01whilst it is very sad,
16:02they have made a choice.
16:03But if they're to get other innocent people
16:04involved in that,
16:05those people haven't made that choice.
16:06Vehicle is a right, right, right
16:08and the Jarenex Glosset
16:10Hayfield A624
16:11going under the bridge.
16:21The VRA is low,
16:22now it's open to high,
16:23back to low
16:24as the vehicle overtakes cycles.
16:27Slightly blocked by vehicles.
16:33It's getting round on that vehicle again now,
16:34it's just managed to make its way from here.
16:35We're still Hayfield Road, Hayfield Road.
16:37Local officers make their way to the area.
16:42Now entering the national speed window.
16:45Just keep it slightly back out there,
16:47you can.
16:49The vehicle is doing a right, right, right
16:52down what is some sort of dirt track.
16:55We're 4-7, I've got out of foot,
17:06I've also dumped it so far down the lane.
17:09With two suspects now on the run.
17:15Do you say yellow shorts?
17:17Other officers arrive to help.
17:21And spot one of them.
17:22Two Charlie, they're on the hook.
17:24Downhill towards the farm.
17:27Down the ground.
17:29Down.
17:30Half right to back.
17:32Under arrest.
17:33This is fixed in the death of motor vehicle.
17:35I've seen anything.
17:36No response, don't mention my question.
17:37We've let the line cut.
17:39Anything do you say,
17:40may give us evidence.
17:42An A from two Charlie.
17:43One under arrest,
17:44death of motor vehicle.
17:45Another male's made up on foot towards that farm.
17:47All in black.
17:48All in black.
17:51Are those cops, are they all right then, chitchat?
17:52Yeah, no, they're completely fine.
17:53I'm misuniting them, man.
17:54I'm honest, her thing was a lot of harassment.
17:56Right.
17:57Put you in a stolen car,
17:58and they've failed to stop for police,
17:59and you've run off from us, right?
18:01On your feet.
18:04These people generally find that the people
18:06who are being paid to go and do it
18:07are usually from very poor upbringings
18:09who've not got much,
18:10so if they get told,
18:11well, you go out and make a couple of costs
18:12and you can have a couple of grand in your back pocket,
18:13people are going to do that.
18:15With one in custody,
18:18local police will continue to look for the other suspect.
18:22It's nice to actually catch someone
18:24that has stolen someone's car,
18:26and that's what police officers join the job for.
18:29Just stop and reunite someone with their property.
18:34I am free.
18:38Within just 60 minutes,
18:40the team has been forced into three dangerous pursuits.
18:44I think this, now, we've just had,
18:47proves what we're up against as a police force.
18:49We're certainly getting more and more incidents
18:51where they're taking all manner of risks.
18:54Whether it's a response to reduced police resources,
18:57I don't know, but...
18:59But it is becoming more and more common.
19:02I never enjoy a pursuit,
19:05but the reality is
19:06that we're going to have to continue doing it,
19:08which is why we keep the training up,
19:10we keep practising it,
19:12and every day we get better.
19:18Well, to be fair,
19:19because we're all out,
19:20we've got the tactical resources out.
19:22If it had come straight up that hill,
19:23it would have been mustard.
19:24Yeah.
19:25Because I was looking for that seer,
19:27because he could have come down this way,
19:29and I come around that junction,
19:31and this little BMW is just doing like doughnuts,
19:33and it stalled there,
19:35and then he couldn't get it going.
19:36Anyway, hopefully,
19:37it should be all along the cameras.
19:39We've just had three pursuits in an hour.
19:41Yeah.
19:42It's becoming feral.
19:43So, something's got to be done.
19:44If that plane had been up,
19:45it would have been bang on for both.
19:47Yeah.
19:48I'm going to have a sandwich,
19:49because it's that time.
19:50Can't believe it's half-time already.
19:51No, I can't.
19:52At least Swifty got his.
19:56If any police force was to adopt a no-pursuit policy,
19:59then you're looking at anarchy.
20:02There can't ever be a time when the police
20:05can't bring a vehicle to a stop,
20:07and we've got professional tactics to do that,
20:09and we do it really quite well.
20:13Coming up...
20:14One out on the inside.
20:16One out and running, two out and running.
20:18Stop! Get out of here!
20:19Get out of here!
20:20The summer crime spree continues.
20:22Where was yours, Jack?
20:23Where?
20:24My arm's sitting.
20:25Two of them have gone left.
20:26As Scott and the team hunt down runaway suspects
20:29from a reported stolen car.
20:31It's a moment in time,
20:32you're under arrest for theft of motor vehicle.
20:49What are we looking for?
20:52Blue Mercedes A5.
20:56Near Chesterfield,
20:58Sergeant Scott Riley and his team
21:00are fighting a summertime spike in crime.
21:03So we're just making our way towards the A61.
21:06Where stolen cars activate the ANPR cameras.
21:11Tonight, three units are searching for a car reported stolen.
21:17It's not it, is it?
21:33No.
21:34Patrolling alongside Scott is traffic cop Jack Pressland
21:39in a marked car and an unmarked armed response unit.
21:44Just trying to find out what the circumstances are.
21:48It's a Mercedes, quite a high-powered car,
21:50so it'll be a good one to get back.
21:56Problems with vehicle crime is the other criminality around it,
21:59the burglaries, the dangerous driving, the theft stops, drugs.
22:04These people will do anything to keep that vehicle with them,
22:07so they drive dangerously and recklessly.
22:10Problem aid appears it was given to him as part of a test drive,
22:15however, he's not given it back, essentially.
22:18The woman who reported the car stolen
22:21says it was taken by someone she knows.
22:25Received. Sounds very messy.
22:28More details come in about the suspected car thief.
22:33It's somebody called...
22:36..19 years old.
22:37You know, ketamine, crack cocaine,
22:39nonsense and heroin.
22:41One of the drug orders, apparently.
22:44He's got previous focus on a threat survivor
22:46that said he was going to shoot.
22:49He's got warning markers for firearms making threats,
22:52so quite a dangerous offender.
22:55Still a very, very strange incident.
22:58So, reading between the lines,
23:02a girl's got herself mixed up with lads that deal drugs,
23:05run drugs.
23:06They've taken her car.
23:08She knows who these people are,
23:10but she's a bit scared
23:12or won't tell us the full story.
23:15Luckily, firearms units have managed to get behind it
23:29in an unmarked vehicle,
23:30and it's coming in my direction.
23:33We work closely with the arm response team,
23:36their advanced drivers as well,
23:38so we'll look again, it's stopped.
23:40Jack wakes up just ahead of the suspect car.
23:45If you have...
23:50Yeah, it is.
23:51Contact, contact.
23:56Handed over to firearms,
23:57they're directly behind it, unmarked vehicle.
24:01Just to make you aware,
24:03unmarked vehicle,
24:04high performance, advanced driver,
24:06C-packs.
24:08Got an offside indication.
24:10Right, right, right.
24:12Are you going towards one low car?
24:14I'm not.
24:15Plastic's got rid, basically,
24:17Chesterfield now, passing the speed camera.
24:20I'm thinking, when is this going to fail to stop?
24:22It's a stolen motor vehicle,
24:24and it's got three police vehicles behind it.
24:28It's only a matter of time.
24:31Got an offside indication.
24:33Right, right, right.
24:35Right, right, right, right.
24:37Near-side indication.
24:40That might cancel the vehicle's increasing speed.
24:44I believe it's reacting to our presence.
24:49It's from...
24:524-0, car two.
24:55There's always a worry when a vehicle fails to stop.
24:58What risk are they going to take to get away?
25:00What are they going to do?
25:05Entering a housing estate,
25:06officers lose sight of the Mercedes.
25:09I believe it's a right-right.
25:15Crash, crash, crash.
25:17One out.
25:18Near-side.
25:19One out and running.
25:20Two out and running.
25:21Three out and running.
25:22Driver down there.
25:24As firearms officers follow two of the runners on foot,
25:34Jack searches for the third.
25:39Yeah, they're potentially coming in with direction
25:41and the way that the two's moving.
25:43Stop there now!
25:44Stop!
25:45Get here!
25:46Show me hands now!
25:47Show me hands!
25:48Get on the floor!
25:49Get on the floor now!
25:50Get on the floor now!
25:51Down!
25:52Down!
25:53Get your hands behind your back now!
25:55Get your hands behind your back!
25:57You haven't done anything, man.
26:00I haven't done anything.
26:01Give me hands?
26:02I haven't done anything.
26:05I haven't done anything.
26:06It's a moment in time you're under arrest,
26:07theft of motor vehicle.
26:09What?
26:10You do not have to say anything but may on defence,
26:11not mention...
26:12When questioned something which later are in court,
26:14and if you do say maybe in evidence,
26:16there's still going to be another one round here, mate.
26:18What? I haven't stolen.
26:194-0.
26:20Got one detained.
26:22Stand here.
26:25Scott arrives to assist the search.
26:29Shall I light over here?
26:32Where was yours, Jack?
26:33Say again, Scott.
26:34Where was yours?
26:36We're firearms sitting.
26:37Two of them have gone left.
26:42The car's just been abandoned there,
26:44so it would make sense to come up here
26:46into one of these gardens here.
26:47Right.
26:48You're under arrest on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle, OK?
26:51Got a hotel you shouldn't have?
26:52No.
26:54I've just got my phone and my V blocks it.
26:56All right.
26:57Check back at your waistband, mate.
26:59Lovely.
27:01You got rips on your trousers, pal?
27:03I fell over.
27:04All right.
27:05All right.
27:06What are you doing down here, then?
27:10Just keep him in your coffin now,
27:11and we'll sign out what we're doing in Gothenburg.
27:13Yeah.
27:15This gentleman's been locked up at this moment
27:16on suspicion of theft of that motor vehicle
27:18until we can find out of was.
27:20Luckily, I've seen him in the corner of my eye,
27:22and he's obviously shattered because he's let a fat man catch him.
27:26Jack hands over the young suspect to local officers
27:29to take him to the police station.
27:31You're going to end up getting interviewed, mate?
27:33Yeah, that's fine.
27:35Well, I'll have to speak to your mum because you're 17, so...
27:3816.
27:39And you're out in a stolen car.
27:40I didn't know it was a stolen car.
27:43He's now put himself in this vehicle.
27:47It's not the brightest thing to do, but he's helped us out,
27:50and obviously we can then put it in an interview to him.
27:53Have a good think about it, yeah?
27:54He shouldn't have been in a stolen car that's failed to stop, should you?
27:57Right, these fine gentlemen are going to give you a lift.
27:59Have a think about who you're hanging around with, mate.
28:01Thank you very much, fellas.
28:05Have a good night, see you later.
28:08This lad is just going down a really bad path.
28:12Children nowadays are being manipulated.
28:17They're promised reward.
28:1915, 16-year-old child getting drugs, getting money.
28:22It's easier for them to go and commit criminality
28:25than getting the pocket money for washing the pots.
28:27He's gone up that jitty and then walked across
28:31and then I've literally seen him on the next street.
28:33Yeah, of course, you turned up there, didn't you?
28:34Yeah.
28:35And just as I'm going back up there,
28:36I've seen a black figure come past me and I thought,
28:39it's got to be him.
28:41Yeah, he's ripped all his trousers there,
28:42and got blood all over his face, and he's clearly been edge-hopping.
28:45With one suspect caught, two are still missing.
28:48Oh, so they've actually gone starbursts in literally three different directions.
28:51Yeah.
28:52He's clearly involved.
28:53I don't know. I've locked him up at the minute.
28:54I'm suspicious of theft of motor vehicles.
28:55We're not going to be able to prove he's driving, are we?
28:57No.
28:58They were quick, though.
28:59I said that. I said he was right quick, that was.
29:01Yeah.
29:04The suspect crashed the Mercedes into the wall of someone's house.
29:08They've clearly decamped as the vehicle's been moving.
29:14It's come to laying the tree, so...
29:16What's it done, man? Lost it and mounted the kerb, you think?
29:19Look, it's not taking a corner of that house out.
29:21Have you seen how close that is?
29:24They find a single trainer by the driver's door.
29:28Have you seen how he's managed to get out?
29:30No.
29:31He's nearly boxed himself in, hasn't he?
29:33Why do they have all the luck in the world?
29:35Oh, well, at least we'll go right back.
29:38Like I said, they've clearly been to McDonald's, haven't they?
29:40Yeah.
29:41As you can see, they've been to a famous fast-food restaurant prior to this,
29:46so plenty CCTV enquiries there.
29:51On a street nearby...
29:53I'm going to wait and be nice to have a chance to have nothing wrong.
29:56..firearms officers find two men.
29:59I'll tell you why, right,
30:01because we suspect that you're one of the ones that went running off.
30:04What? Run off from where?
30:07I don't get what you're saying. I've got nothing wrong.
30:09You're arresting me for no reason.
30:11I'll search you.
30:13Yeah, yeah, you stand that way, mate.
30:15He's got a cheeseburger still in his pocket.
30:17Has he?
30:18Oh, no!
30:20I bet that's cold.
30:22Oh!
30:23The suspect, found with a burger in his pocket,
30:26appears to be missing something.
30:29The driver of the vehicle, that's his other shoe.
30:33It was found at the driver's side of the door,
30:35so there's something else that puts him there, really.
30:38So I can look up with absent evidence.
30:41Unfortunately, with this evidence,
30:43this gentleman's not going to the ball tonight.
30:46He'll be going shoeless to custody instead.
30:48Yeah, come on, mate.
31:00Jack arrives at custody with one of the suspected passengers.
31:04Just take a seat on that bench there for a second, buddy.
31:07Stinking weed, do you have any on you?
31:09I don't know if they've already searched me.
31:11Have they?
31:12Yeah.
31:13Come up, then, mate.
31:18Just come stand here, fella.
31:20Hey, time of arrival was 01.25 hours, Sarge.
31:23Been arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle.
31:26He's been named and in the area of a motor vehicle
31:30that's failed to stop for police
31:32and people have ran from the vehicle.
31:35He's been located nearby,
31:38meeting another named offender
31:40who's also ran from the vehicle.
31:42I'm listening.
31:43I'm in the car.
31:44I ride the car.
31:45I'm going to start my car.
31:46You'll see it.
31:50I'm tired.
31:52What's happening to your time?
31:54It's a quarter to two in the morning, mate.
31:56By the time the paperwork's going to be early as...
31:58Well, it's a bit morning, mate.
32:00OK.
32:01Given the circumstances for the arrest,
32:02I'm going to override attention, OK?
32:04Just to be able to observe evidence.
32:08Outside, officers bring in the suspected driver.
32:23Erm...
32:24It's when you got the shoeless one.
32:26Yes.
32:27The shoeless.
32:28Oh, that one's funny, isn't it?
32:29It's next to your driver's door.
32:31We'll be here to drive in the car, won't we?
32:33You lot have arrested people, yeah?
32:35I was in the car alone.
32:36Well, we know that's not true.
32:38I was in the car alone.
32:39Well, I've been in custody.
32:40One of the gentlemen's admitted driving,
32:42so it's pretty much bang on, really.
32:45We've now got three locked up, bits in a stolen car,
32:48took off the street.
32:49So, really good job, teams work well.
32:55Regarding punishments for this kind of offence,
32:57ideally, you should be getting a custodial sentence,
33:00but that would be mainly for the driver,
33:02who commits more offences,
33:03such as the dangerous drive,
33:05fail to stop, no document offences.
33:07And the passengers will look at safeguarding.
33:10Coming up...
33:16Contact, contact with that vehicle.
33:18..a hunt for another car reported stolen.
33:21It's well aware of my presence.
33:23..and a learner driver facing a long walk home.
33:26Where's your L-plates?
33:27You know, the learner plates.
33:29So, she can't drive without those.
33:31So, even if this was not stolen,
33:34it would still be taken anyway.
33:40.
33:50Observations for another vehicle stolen
33:52at Langley-Mail-Hena around 6am this morning.
33:56More than 120,000 cars are stolen in the UK each year,
34:01with a vehicle taken every four minutes.
34:05The number of stolen cars that travel through Derbyshire every day
34:08or get stolen in Derbyshire,
34:10it is definitely on the increase.
34:12We all pay a lot of money for cars.
34:14It's probably the second biggest purchase
34:16that anyone ever makes after the mortgage for the house.
34:18So, I want to try and stop people
34:20that are obviously trying to steal your car
34:22and ultimately try and get that car back.
34:24We have currently got a vehicle shown as a clone
34:27heading southbound on the M1.
34:28It's activating ANPR cameras.
34:30A nationwide network of police cameras helps officers
34:34like traffic cop Andy Swift to locate stolen vehicles.
34:39There are tens of thousands of ANPR cameras around the country
34:44that track vehicle movements.
34:46It will flag up saying that there's stolen vehicles
34:48in this location travelling in this direction.
34:50NA receiving off tanker 47.
34:54It's been an activation for a stolen car, M1 northbound.
34:57Can we put a job on? I'll pass you details.
34:59Andy begins the hunt for the suspected stolen vehicle.
35:04I'll try and locate it.
35:18Scott, you can go 28 if you want.
35:21Sergeant Scott Riley joins the search.
35:25Do you want me to travel?
35:27Yeah, if you wouldn't mind.
35:28I'll try and get behind it.
35:29I'm about three minutes behind it.
35:31I'll put a follow me in at 27.
35:34If it's going to go, it'll go before then.
35:36And then you've got time to at least put the block on, haven't you?
35:39Scott, I'm just at 27.
35:41I'm just going to come off.
35:42Do a lap right roundabout.
35:43Make sure it's not come off towards Annesley.
35:46And then I'll rejoin northbound if you're already there.
35:50There we are, that's it there.
35:55I think it's going to be contact, contact.
35:58I'll confirm for you in about five seconds on the roundabout.
36:01It's contact, contact with that vehicle.
36:03It's well aware of my presence, directly behind it.
36:07Yes, yes, that's correct.
36:12It's the second, the second on the roundabout.
36:14I'll put a stop in when you get a bit further down.
36:17Just for information, it's a fully livery, high points vehicle,
36:20a pants driver, T-pack train.
36:21I think there's multiple occupants.
36:23I can see heads bobbing around.
36:25Stand by, it's on to the roundabout.
36:27It's not one, not one.
36:30It's the second, the second.
36:33I'm going to stop it in a bus bay just prior to the roundabout.
36:37Hey, the vehicle's stopped.
36:54Hello? Are you all right?
36:59Just turn the engine off for us.
37:02There are three women in the car.
37:05Is it your car?
37:06Lovely, all right.
37:07Just step out and I'll explain why, all right?
37:09My boyfriend's car.
37:10OK, that's all right, no worries, all right, no worries.
37:12Is it your car or her boyfriend's?
37:14My boyfriend's car.
37:15OK, no.
37:16I will come round there.
37:17I got that vehicle stopped.
37:18I'll update you in a minute.
37:19So, it's your boyfriend's car, your boyfriend's car.
37:20Right.
37:21So, when did he buy it?
37:22Two months ago.
37:23Yeah.
37:24It's been reported that I think what you've done is, you've bought a car that is stolen.
37:37The person that sold it you has stolen it.
37:40Yeah.
37:41The person sell the car to another person.
37:44Yeah.
37:45To my friend.
37:46My friend sell the car for me.
37:48Yes.
37:49Right, no worries.
37:50All right.
37:51Lovely.
37:52Scott Riley arrives on scene.
37:55I think what's happened is that someone stole it, sold it on to probably someone else,
38:03who's then sold it to you.
38:05So, ultimately, someone has had their car stolen, and you've bought it, not through any malicious means.
38:11You've not done it yourself, but you've been the unfortunate victim, so that's why you need to report it.
38:16I'm inclined to an extent to believe them, that they've probably bought it not knowing that it's stolen.
38:22But I'm also very aware of the fact that it might have been a case of ask no questions, tell no lies sort of situation.
38:30Experience has taught me that if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
38:34Have you got any insurance to drive it?
38:37Yes.
38:38Have you got your driver's licence on you?
38:39No.
38:40Anyway, what's your first name?
38:41Type that in there.
38:42And your date of birth.
38:44You've got a provisional licence, is that right?
38:46Yeah.
38:47Where's your L plates?
38:49Yeah.
38:50Because she can't drive without L plates.
38:52You know, the learner plates, so she can't drive without those.
38:55So even if this was not stolen, it would still be taken anyway, because she's not got the correct documentation.
39:04OK.
39:05And I take back the car?
39:06Well, probably never.
39:07Because she drive or because it's stolen?
39:09Well, initially, because it's stolen, but also...
39:12Well, she's got no L plates.
39:16Andy runs the vehicle details through the motor insurance database.
39:21You're not listed on the insurance.
39:23There's only these people and that person.
39:26So your name's not there?
39:28All right.
39:29She's got no insurance for it.
39:31She's got no insurance.
39:33It's estimated that there are one million uninsured drivers in the UK.
39:39Yeah, ready for a 10-15 person in the L check, please, 2-4.
39:43Scott checks the licence details of the woman who bought the car with her boyfriend.
39:48Yeah, so when did she pass her test, please?
39:52Yes, she's confirmed. She's the name driver.
39:54Yeah, love and thank you.
39:57Yeah, she is named on it.
39:59Why is she driving if she's got a licence to insure?
40:04I don't know.
40:05Why would you do that?
40:06Right.
40:07Because you've not got a licence and you've got no L plates and no insurance,
40:11you're getting points on your driver's licence and about £400 in fines.
40:15Why aren't you driving it?
40:16You've got a licence to drive it.
40:18You should drive it.
40:20You know you've done it because you're smiling.
40:22It's a wholly bizarre situation when the passenger of a vehicle is insured
40:27and it would let their friend drive who's got a provisional licence,
40:30no L plates, no insurance and go on a motorway,
40:33which you're not allowed to do unless it's with a DVSA-approved driving instructor.
40:36So what needs to happen is, how many have you got in the back? Two?
40:40One.
40:41One.
40:42You need to get all your personal belongings, because just in case you never see the car again,
40:47make sure you've got everything out that you need to have.
40:49Maybe. Yes.
40:50Yeah.
40:51All your car, all your house keys, all your stuff like that, iPhones, chargers.
40:56Scenarios such as this have come in much, much more common,
40:59where people are buying cars, then you're telling them,
41:02well, unfortunately, I'm afraid your car's stolen.
41:03Got it.
41:04All right. Thank you.
41:06And ultimately, they'll just end up being carless and cashless.
41:11You want your cigarettes?
41:14Cigarettes?
41:15Or are they empty?
41:17All right.
41:18Hopefully, now we've got that car back,
41:19someone else will be able to claim it back from the recovery garage.
41:23In regards to the driver, she's looking at about 12 points.
41:26It's three for driving that L plate, six for no insurance,
41:29and then three for driving the motorway,
41:30so she's effectively in one fell swoop managed to get herself 12 points.
41:33It'll probably disqualify, I would imagine.
41:36It's a nail, innit?
41:38Yeah.
41:39Worthwhile stop, then.
41:41Just make a good ground, you know, motorway, that has.
41:44Let's ask for those driving, who's not insured?
41:46Just make a good ground, that has.
41:47That's how we do, 130.
