00:00I mean, for me, it's more than hair.
00:02I think it's just a relationship.
00:04Don't make me start crying, honestly.
00:07I might, too.
00:09I'm Serge Normand.
00:11And I'm Julia Roberts.
00:12And we are here on the set of our Hollywood Reporter cover
00:15shoot.
00:16I can remember the day that we met.
00:18Like, it was yesterday.
00:19Me, too.
00:19And it was not yesterday.
00:21I was working on a movie, and I'd had a night shoot.
00:25I had never met Serge before.
00:28And walked into the trailer, and he's there.
00:31And a makeup artist who I'd never met before.
00:34I said, yeah, I'm so sorry.
00:35I'm very tired.
00:36And I just worked all night.
00:38And I sat down in the chair.
00:40Soon as Serge started touching my hair, you know,
00:42that feeling where it just is so relaxing.
00:44And I felt completely sound asleep and woke up, I don't know,
00:4945 minutes later, gorgeous.
00:52I was like, let's be friends forever.
00:54Sometimes we can be halfway through hair.
00:57And I'll say, what are we doing?
01:00What's going on back there?
01:02Just because there's trust.
01:03And we understand each other without really talking
01:06about it too much.
01:07We're so spontaneous about changes.
01:10And you've always been so brave about it.
01:12And I think I've never been scared because you've never
01:14been scared of changing.
01:15So it's like between colors and length.
01:19And we've just done, I think, a little bit of everything.
01:21I mean, except the first time you asked me to get it short.
01:24And you were like, baby.
01:27Sorry, we said baby.
01:28And then we were so happy about it.
01:30Yeah.
01:30We've just evolved along the way.
01:33We just like not being contrived about it, I think,
01:35and just being spontaneous.
01:36I think that's the best thing about it.
01:39That's so ladylike, right?
01:41I know.
01:41But we did that for quite a while.
01:42That's sweet.
01:43Remember like that one way of doing the side sweep was just
01:47like kind of like very Audrey Byrne-like.
01:50In some ways, like that kind of 60s-inspired beautiful dress.
01:54Nice makeup.
01:55And the store.
01:56That was all Serge.
01:57I had no input into this except for supplying the head.
02:00The thing is, do you remember the dress?
02:02Oscars are on a Sunday.
02:03And I tried this dress on on the Saturday.
02:06Debbie Mason found that dress for me in the Valentino
02:09basement.
02:09And it had only been worn once before, like 10 years
02:14earlier or something, in a photo shoot that Serge had done.
02:17Which happened to have done for the Valentino campaign.
02:20The whole connection with it was meant something.
02:22And that it fit.
02:23It needed no alterations.
02:25Yeah, it was just like a glove.
02:26It was kind of bizarre.
02:27Yeah.
02:28How that came together.
02:29So beautiful.
02:30And the hair.
02:30I mean, I don't know if I could do that again.
02:34Love.
02:34I love that.
02:35Yeah.
02:36I love that style.
02:37It's one of my favorites.
02:38This is like old, reliable.
02:41Yeah.
02:41Messy bun.
02:42Yeah, we always go back to that regularly.
02:44And I never get tired of it.
02:46Yeah, me either.
02:46Never.
02:47I like that color too.
02:48Maybe that's what we should be doing.
02:49I like that.
02:50See?
02:51You're inspiring us for change.
02:52See?
02:53See how it happens?
02:54It's just spontaneous.
02:55And that's how we do it.
02:56Can.
02:57Can.
02:58That was a moment.
02:59That was a moment.
03:00That was so nerve-wracking and exciting, getting ready for
03:04that.
03:05And I think we were all excited.
03:08And I had this beautiful Armani dress.
03:10And then the hair, and the jewels, and the moment.
03:14And as we're leaving, going down the hallway, and the seamstress
03:17is still sewing.
03:18Was finishing.
03:19Yeah.
03:20And it was just sort of...
03:21Yeah, it's all the behind the scenes that people don't
03:22always see, and then you're there.
03:23Yeah.
03:24And walking up, and the flowiness of the dress.
03:27I mean, it's just like everything was just like magical.
03:29That's nice here, Serge.
03:30Yeah, it's just like it's beautiful.
03:32When was that?
03:33I love that.
03:34Was that the Amphar event?
03:36How do I remember these things?
03:37I don't know.
03:38I love that look.
03:39I love that look too.
03:40But see, that's the perfect example.
03:41I mean, that's a sophisticated dress in some ways.
03:44So you kind of want to go a little bit against it.
03:46And I love that we've never really done such a...
03:49Like almost like you could have done it yourself.
03:51Which I love that feeling, and it doesn't look like you've tried so hard.
03:56I couldn't do any of these things by myself, just to say.
04:00I just love that look.
04:01I like that too.
04:02Oh, I love that look.
04:04Yeah.
04:05Was that Toronto?
04:06Yes.
04:07I love the dress.
04:08It's sort of complementing the outfit with the hairstyle.
04:12Yeah, and we had not done it that straight with a little volume.
04:16And, you know, there's a little period touch to it with the little bump on the top,
04:20but it doesn't look retro.
04:22It's always like the fine line there.
04:24Like I'm trying to look at, you know, hairdos that were once and then adapting it to today
04:29and making it look contemporary.
04:31That's nice.
04:33Rewearing that dress, which I had worn to the Ticket to Paradise premiere,
04:39with my hair slicked behind my ears, and the dress was to the floor for the premiere.
04:46And then I wore it again at this event, and we had shortened the dress, my hair was shorter,
04:53and we just sort of re-envisioned the dress.
04:56Yeah, I love it.
04:57Re-envisioned the hairstyle.
04:58You know what was great was the Colbert hair.
05:00That was great hair.
05:01Yeah, which we had never done.
05:03Well, we never really do things that are that as a bun.
05:06With that whole outfit, which was also quite graphic and such a great suit,
05:11and so we just did something like a little higher.
05:13That's real lady hair right there.
05:15Yeah, but with the suit, see to me, it's very feminine,
05:19but with a masculine feminine suit, it just all works for me.
05:23Yeah.
05:24So recent, and I'm looking at it, I'm like, oh.
05:27Yeah.
05:28We're so nostalgic.
05:30Yeah.
05:31I mean, for me, it's more than hair.
05:33I think it's just a relationship.
05:35Don't make me start crying, honestly.
05:37I might too.
05:40No, it's just the truth.
05:42It's just like, I think you're never good on your own, and I've been very lucky.
05:47I mean, you know, when people say, oh my God, you know, you have a little talent,
05:52you look what you're working on, and it's people helping you just to go up
05:58and be better at what you do, and the trust, it's just like, there's nothing like it.
06:03Hmm.
