00:00So you just, you just trick people into thinking you have money and they believe you.
00:05I should try that on my wife, but she knows I spend it all on pop figures.
00:08I have a problem.
00:09What is up Netflix fans?
00:11Welcome back to my channel.
00:12As always, we're talking the brand new streaming movie or series that just dropped.
00:16And today's show is Inventing Anna.
00:19This is a fascinating true story.
00:21Or is it?
00:22It's one we're going to talk about spoiler free and I need your thoughts down below.
00:25Is this one worth a watch in your opinion?
00:28So a journalist with a lot to prove investigates the case of Anna Delvey,
00:32the Instagram legendary German heiress who stole the hearts of New York's social scene
00:37and stole their money as well.
00:39Anna Chlumsky plays Vivian.
00:40Julia Garner plays Anna.
00:42And this is, of course, based on a New York Magazine article created by Shonda Rhimes.
00:47Of course, Grey's Anatomy, Scandal.
00:49Some of that charm transfers over into this series.
00:52And you have our main two characters who form this very interesting love-hate relationship
00:56as Anna is awaiting her trial.
00:58And our main reporter, who's trying to answer the question I think we're all asking ourselves
01:02throughout the first three to four episodes of this series,
01:04who is Anna?
01:05Because it feels like every time we learn something about her,
01:08whether that be where she came from or the different stories that she's telling various people.
01:14And a lot of the time she sticks to the same story.
01:17But for the most part, you still don't know.
01:19I mean, halfway through the show, you don't know who Anna is.
01:23And we, along with our main journalist, were trying to get our answers
01:27by seeing this series of flashbacks that we get every time Vivian asks a question.
01:33She's going from person to person, kind of retracing these steps.
01:36And as she is asking those questions, how do you know Anna?
01:40How are you introduced?
01:41Did she indeed swindle you in the way that we have kind of been uncovering throughout this series?
01:47And thus, we get our flashback.
01:49And a lot of those flashbacks take up the majority of the episodes.
01:53But that is our show.
01:54We've seen various cases of this type of thing before in movies and television shows.
01:59This is loosely based on an article.
02:01Of course, a lot of it is fictionalized.
02:03And then you look at Julia Garner, who plays the title character of Anna,
02:07who was born in Russia, moved to Germany.
02:09And I was questioning the accent at first.
02:12It felt a bit absurd.
02:14I didn't know if she was kind of stretching it.
02:16I know Julia Garner is an incredible actor.
02:18So, I kind of did as much research as I could.
02:21And when you get to the root of what type of accent she's using,
02:25it does sound fairly accurate for what she's trying to do.
02:30So, at the end of the day, as crazy as it seems at first,
02:33because it almost feels satirical the way she's going about it,
02:37I was like, yeah, she's actually doing a great job.
02:40And we know that Julia Garner has it.
02:42We've seen it countless times, of course, in Ozark.
02:45But I've wanted to see her lead her own series for a while now.
02:49And this feels like the perfect vehicle for her to give us
02:52the type of sociopath-like madness that we need from a character like this,
02:56continuing to tell people, well, I can get money from my father.
02:59Don't worry.
02:59I will get the money from my father.
03:01But at the end of the day,
03:02she comes from a working class-like background,
03:04which makes it feel like she's almost rejecting what her parents stood for,
03:09and going for that American dream by not working for that American dream.
03:14So, there are a lot of elements at play when you just look at her character.
03:18But then we get into the life of our investigator,
03:21and, again, that relationship that she forms with Anna,
03:23but also going around interviewing these individuals
03:26that continue to paint a different picture about Anna.
03:30Everyone sees her as a different person.
03:32And as we get deeper into this investigation,
03:35she sees, we find out that, yeah, even going on Instagram,
03:39you can see that she is a different person everywhere she goes.
03:43And then as we put these clues together,
03:45and I won't say how or what exactly the clues are,
03:48we begin to uncover this mystery along with what is kind of a co-title character.
03:54And that worked out great, right?
03:55The idea is to look at Anna as somewhat of an anti-hero character, right?
04:00She's being painted as one thing by the story itself,
04:03but Julia Garner is playing her in such a likable way,
04:07and that has to come across.
04:08It's a tough tightrope to walk, and she does it almost effortlessly.
04:12And she is the main reason why I found so much enjoyment from aspects of this series.
04:18Now, the show as a whole,
04:19Vivian interviewing Anna's friends, her victims,
04:22seeing the stories from their experiences,
04:25spending a lot of time on the idea of these supposedly smart individuals,
04:30and some of them, they're in financial crisis.
04:32Others, they just kind of get swindled by what she says
04:36because she makes them believe by who she knows,
04:39but she only knows those people because she's being introduced by other people
04:43that she has swindled, creating a web of lies,
04:47and somehow continuing to convince these very wealthy individuals
04:52that she belongs there and deserves to be there.
04:55Now, for a show to make us believe that they are believing her lies,
04:59it's going to take some creative writing,
05:00and I'm not entirely sure if it was fully up to the task of that.
05:04There are occasional moments within the series
05:07that just spend too much time on the less personal aspects of the characters,
05:13getting into more so, you know, what my business is,
05:16what I'm trying to do myself,
05:18as opposed to the constant manipulation from Anna.
05:21I almost wanted to explore her psyche more so than we did.
05:25Instead, we're exploring the surrounding characters,
05:28kind of how they're feeling about the situation,
05:30but we never fully dive into Anna on the level that I wanted to.
05:35You see her emotions,
05:36you see that she truly cares about some of the people that she's swindling,
05:39but at the end of the day,
05:41she's getting her way for a reason,
05:43and I would have liked maybe a better exploration through this screenplay.
05:47And then the character of Vivian,
05:48she's trying to bring back her image in that industry,
05:51and she's a very easy character to root for,
05:54but the show spends a ton of time on her,
05:58and that takes away from what was so good and so interesting about Anna.
06:04In a way, it's good that we're getting an insight into her relationships,
06:07and every time Anna says something that just completely pisses her off,
06:10she can go and vent.
06:12But, you know, again, it was just,
06:14it was a hard thing to balance
06:15because you have two very intriguing main characters,
06:17but obviously one side of the story,
06:20this catch-me-if-you-can-like,
06:22very, at times, thrilling type story
06:26because you're constantly wondering how she's doing what she's doing,
06:30that could have used a bit more.
06:33And maybe telling the story in the
06:35I'm-going-to-interview-someone-and-then-see-these-flashbacks type form
06:39hurt it at the end of the day
06:41because it took away from the parts that we were enjoying the most.
06:45Anna is fearless.
06:45She's full of emotion.
06:46She occasionally gets moody.
06:48She lashes out and has to kind of control herself at the end of the day.
06:52What she is doing seems sporadic,
06:54but at the same time, it's so manipulative
06:56and, in that sense, kind of brilliant.
07:00Obviously, we don't want to look at it as that.
07:01But, yeah, I mean, she is successfully swindling.
07:05I keep using that word.
07:06The tender swindler.
07:07That's a documentary from last week.
07:09She's swindling a lot of people out of their money,
07:11and it's working, and it continues to work.
07:14So, how did she end up where she ended up?
07:17Well, that's for you to find out.
07:19So, tonally and script-wise, I think that's where it could have been more consistent.
07:23I didn't know how to feel at certain moments.
07:25Am I supposed to be laughing?
07:26Am I supposed to feel a lot for these characters through their emotion that they're displaying?
07:30Regardless, you're in this for the central performance.
07:34Julia Garner is giving an outstanding, once I got on board with everything,
07:38an outstanding performance, and I'm so glad she got the opportunity to lead this show.
07:44And the story itself is, overall, fascinating.
07:48Before I give you guys my score, let me know,
07:50what did you think of Inventing Anna?
07:51Have you binged this entire series?
07:53And if you enjoyed this video and you want to support this channel,
07:56be sure to drop your thumbs up down below.
07:58While the focus of the series isn't always consistent, the story itself is fascinating.
08:03Garner plays her in a way that makes it impossible to look away every time she's on screen.
08:08And because of that, I'm going to 70% with my score.
08:11I thought, overall, this series did what it was trying to do,
08:14and there's definitely some entertainment.
08:17If you like that kind of movie, like I said before, catch me if you can.
08:21A very interesting type of investigative mystery.
08:24Appreciate you guys for watching.
08:25Stay tuned.
08:26Let me know, what should I review next?
