Ex-Philippine mayor Alice Guo given life sentence for human trafficking

A Philippine trial court on Thursday (Nov 20) sentenced former Bamban mayor Alice Guo accused of having ties to Chinese scam and criminal syndicates to life imprisonment after finding her guilty of human trafficking.  Guo ran for mayor in Bamban, an agricultural town north of the capital Manila, as a Filipino citizen, but she was later identified by law enforcement as Chinese national Guo Hua Ping. 00:02A Philippine court found former Bamban mayor Alice Guo guilty of human trafficking on Thursday.

00:08The Pasig City Regional Trial Court sentenced the 35-year-old politician to life imprisonment

00:13and ordered for her transfer to the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandalu-Yong City.

00:19The court also convicted seven other individuals in the case for trafficking

00:24and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

00:26The Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission said all the accused were also slapped with a 2 million pesos fine each.

00:37The commission said the court decision was a symbolic victory in its fight against large-scale trafficking and online scam syndicates.

00:45They said Guo's conviction revealed the truth behind the criminal activities

00:49discovered in an illegal Philippine offshore gaming operator hub that she was involved in Bamban.

00:54Guo and the other accused did not appear in court in person, as they attended only via videoconference.

01:02Guo ran for mayor in the agricultural town north of Manila, as a Filipino citizen,

01:08but she was later identified by law enforcement as Chinese National Guo Huaping.

01:14The Senate launched a congressional probe into Guo in May last year,

01:18two months after a police raid revealed a scam center operating out of a facility built on land partially owned by Guo.

01:26The raid uncovered hundreds of trafficked workers, including foreign nationals.

01:32Guo, who was removed from office by the ombudsman in August last year for grave misconduct,

01:38also faces other criminal charges including graft and money laundering.
