00:00A powerful explosion dripped through the Naugao police station in Srinagar late last night.
00:05Because of this explosion, nine people are dead and close to 32 are still injured.
00:10The Jammu and Kashmir DGP said this was accidental explosion, ruling out the terror angle,
00:15saying that it occurred while the police were handling the seized explosives that were recovered from Paritabat.
00:20As per the Ministry of Home Affairs, the recovered explosives were kept in an open area at the Naugao police station.
00:26This accidentally exploded.
00:28Due to the large volume, the handling process had been ongoing for the past two days.
00:33Officials emphasised that any speculation at this stage is not required.
00:37Officials said the death toll may actually rise.
00:40The CCTV footage captured the exact moment when the blast blew apart parts of the building.
00:45Flames and thick smoke was actually visible from quite some distance.
00:50They are the relatives of the deceased of the Naugao police station explosion and they are trying to enter this area.
00:57The police has cordoned off this whole location.
01:01There are barricades that have been put.
01:03Nobody is being allowed for security reasons to enter as the investigation is still going on.
01:08But these women, they are trying to go inside.
01:13They are speaking to these policemen.
01:14The Jammu Kashmir police who are investigating this whole area and this whole explosion, the reasons for the explosion, they are trying to convince them.
01:22This is certainly a difficult moment for the families.
01:27Nine people, including the police officials, the camera persons, they have lost their lives in this explosion last night.
01:34And here, the government, the MHA has been saying that this has been an accidental explosion.
01:41The investigation is going on as this whole area was laden with the explosives that were recovered in Faridabad.
01:50This is a sensitive zone where the police cannot allow anybody since the investigation is going on.
01:56And there has to be a proper sanitization of the whole area until the road is open.
02:03This is Shivani Sharma with camera person Sanjay for India Today from Srinagar's Naugao.
02:08A huge quantity of explosive substances, chemicals, and regions were also recovered from Faridabad on 9th and 10th of November 25.
02:23This recovery, like the rest of the recoveries which we have done, was transported and kept securely in the open area of police station Naugam.
02:33As part of the prescribed procedure, the samples of the recovery had to be forwarded for further forensic and chemical examination.
02:47On account of the voluminous nature of the recovery, this process was going on for the past two days, which means yesterday and the day before, by the FSL team.
02:59Due to the unstable and sensitive nature of the recovery, the sampling process, the handling was being done with extreme caution, with utmost caution by the FSL team.
03:17However, unfortunately, during this course, last night, around 11.20 p.m., an accidental explosion has taken place.
03:34Any other speculation into the cause of this incident is unnecessary.
04:10Accidental whispered.
04:159 people came and 27 police, 2 people came and 3 people came.
04:45My colleague Shivani Sharma is now joining me.
05:02Shivani, in fact, is present right outside the police station,
05:05the Naugam police station where this deadly blast took place.
05:08Shivani, from what we can understand at the moment,
05:10this is what the DGP also spoke about,
05:13that this is an accidental blast.
05:15For the past two days, they were looking at ammonium nitrate.
05:19And last night, because of a mishap, this blast happened.
05:23Unfortunately, nine people have lost their lives.
05:29Ishwari, I'm right now outside the Naugam police station,
05:32which has been damaged and destroyed in the devastating explosion last night.
05:37Nine people have lost their lives, including the officials who were involved
05:40in the tests that were happening.
05:43The FSL team was present right out there.
05:45The whole area is still cordoned off.
05:47People are not being allowed to go inside because the sanitization is going on,
05:52the rescue operations are going on,
05:53and the damage assessment is also going on.
05:56Ishwari, while we are witnessing all this on ground,
05:59we also see the ambulance is still on the go to take people to the hospitals.
06:04The number of injured officially is around 30,
06:08and many people are missing.
06:10Nine deaths have been officially reported.
06:12You can see the fire emergency services are present here.
06:14Because when this explosion happened at 1120,
06:17immediately rescue operations were present to action.
06:21There were fire brigades.
06:23There were ambulances.
06:25But what we have reported,
06:26and what we've seen from closer to this area,
06:30is the high impact of this explosion.
06:33You know, the buildings that are in the proximity of this police station,
06:36they have been badly damaged.
06:38We can see glasses all over.
06:39We can see doors broken.
06:42Even the stone buildings have impact on them.
06:46So, one can imagine the high intensity of this explosion.
06:50Although we've also heard the DGP of Jammu and Kashmir,
06:53Nalan Prabhat, who was addressing the media,
06:55and he said and clarified that there's just no scope of any speculation.
06:59This is not a terror act,
07:00but an accidental explosion that happened last night
07:04while the teams were inspecting,
07:07and they were investigating whatever was rescued,
07:10whatever was recovered in the operation since last one week.
07:13We've seen the 360 kilograms of ammonium nitrate and other material,
07:192,900 kilograms of ammonium nitrate that was recovered from Paridabad.
07:23What we are given to understand is,
07:25Ashwadar, it was all brought here.
07:27It was kept in the open space of the police station,
07:30and the teams were, since last two days, they were investigating.
07:34All the protocols were being followed.
07:36The precautions were being taken.
07:37But how this blast took place, what went wrong?
07:41What was, was it a mishandling or a detonator?
07:44Or what was the reason for this explosion?
07:46That investigation is still going on.
07:48A lot of police forces there inside.
07:50Since morning, I am reporting from this area.
07:53We've seen a number of police vehicles going inside.
07:57We are seeing the police has been guarding this location.
07:59They are trying to tell people not to stand here for long,
08:03because this is a busy road.
08:05They do not want any kind of chaos here.
08:08We also saw a group of women who had come here to look for the missing person,
08:12the missing persons of their family, their family members, the deceased.
08:17They want to know where they are.
08:19So there is a lot of panic, a lot of alert in Jammu and Kashmir.
08:23The forces are on a high alert.
08:25The rescue goes on.
08:26But yes, the police and the MHA say that there should be no speculation.
08:30And this is an accidental explosion that has happened.
08:34But the magnitude, the intensity is huge.
08:37And one can imagine the amount of explosion,
08:40the amount of explosive that was kept out here that caught fire accidentally.
08:44How it happened, it needs to be known.
08:47The investigations are going on.
08:48But certainly the forces are on a high alert.
08:50Aishwarya.
08:52Thank you, Shivani, giving us all those details.
08:54My colleague Shivani, in fact, is standing right outside the Norgam police station.
08:57Now, this is the police station where the accidental blast has taken place.
09:01Unfortunately, nine people have lost their lives.
