00:00Coming from? Coming from Lamayuru to LA. Coming from Padum to Lamayuru.
00:24Wow, there's a whole military convoy going past. Wow, huge. Look how nice and sunny it is this
00:36morning. Amazing. Yeah. And look at this view. So good. Pretty epic.
00:54Let's see if I can get round.
01:02Okay. Bye bye. Bye bye. Perfect. Okay.
01:15Taking a right here. Ah, yeah. Look, there's a stuffed yak.
01:18Good morning world. Welcome back to the channel. It's ride number 62 on our motorcycle adventure
01:24here in India. And we are here in the beautiful mountainous town of Lamayuru in Ladakh. And we got
01:32here last night after a very, very long, tough ride through the Zanskar Valley and the Zanskar Mountains.
01:40This road went from bad to worse. Seriously. Yeah.
01:45Oh man. What is this? I don't know. This is barely a road anymore. That's barely a road.
01:51It was one hell of a day yesterday. Oh yes, I can tell you.
01:55But what a place to spend the night. There's a monastery up at the top of the hill above the town.
02:01And we had dinner overlooking the town, the monastery, the mountains. Oh, it was just
02:07a beautiful way to finish a very tough day. It was magical. And also the room was very inexpensive.
02:14We paid like 1,500 rupees, which is about 12 pounds. 12 pounds to stay in a place like this.
02:21Incredible. And today is a pretty momentous day on our journey across India,
02:26because we're going to be reaching a major milestone in our journey. So let me show you where we're
02:32heading today. So we are here in Lamayuru. And our mission for today is to ride 113 kilometers east
02:40to reach the city of Leh. Yes, 62 rides after leaving Kanyakomari in the state of Tamil Nadu. Today,
02:49we're going to be reaching Leh Ladakh. Yes, it's such a nice feeling when finally dreams become true.
02:56We were talking about the journey for such a long time, but now it really becomes a reality.
03:01We really make it to Leh. I can't believe that actually. Yeah, we have clocked up nearly 9,000
03:07kilometers since we left Kanyakomari on these humble expulses Shanti and Mowgli. We have ridden
03:14from the jungle hills of Kerala to the far western deserts of Kutch, through the craziness of the cities
03:20Mumbai and Delhi and now deep into the Himalayas. And now we have just over 100 kilometers more to go
03:29and then we're in Leh. And also it's quite sad because this is going to be the last ride that we
03:34do on these bikes. They have a rule in Leh that if you want to continue further towards Umling La,
03:41Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, you have to do it on bikes hired in the town of Leh. Unless you are the
03:48registered owner of the bike, they will not allow you to continue your journey after Leh.
03:53Yes, so we don't really want to break any rules. That means this will be our last ride
04:00on our beloved bikes. But the journey does not finish in Leh because we do intend to do a loop
04:06and to head to the highest motorable road in the world, Umling La, 5,800 and something meters high.
04:14So the plan is going to be that we get to Leh and then we're going to try and see if we can get
04:19another couple of expulses to take us all the way to our final, final destination on this journey,
04:26Umling La, at the top of the world. So it's about a two and a half hour ride to Leh and it's already
04:319.30, so better hit the road. Let's go.
04:54So for today's ride, we're going to be following the Sridharghar-Lei Highway, this road right here,
05:00but we're also going to be following a very, very important river and that is this river right
05:06here, the mighty Indus. Oh, what's this? I don't know. I think we have to maybe register here?
05:17Coming from? Coming from Lamayuru to Leh. Coming from Padum to Lamayuru. Padum. Padum Manali.
05:26Manali, Padum to Lamayuru. Yes. Lamayuru to Leh. Yes, exactly. Passport? Yes, passport.
05:34Bike is set. Yeah, he says move your bike please, he says. Okay, yeah. Okay, three to one? Yep.
05:41Okay. Okay, passport? Yes, yes. Thank you. You're from? From England? Yes. To Delhi. Yeah,
05:50this one from Delhi. Yes. Yeah. And where are you from? Ladakh. You're from Ladakh? From Leh? Yeah. Okay, very nice.
05:57Nice sunshine. Nice sunshine. Yeah, okay. Six S BF. Ah, Nappe Sataname. Thank you.
06:08Thank you. Phone number? You have any phone number? Phone number? Yeah. Ah, yes. Yes. Yes?
06:14Yes, sir. Yeah. 4724. Thank you so much. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay.
06:21Here we go. We have registered with the Ladakh authorities. And as the sign says,
06:35we now have 97 kilometers to go to reach Leh. But as I was saying, it feels very special
06:42to be following this very important river, the Indus River. One of the most important rivers
06:49for the whole of humanity, the Indus Valley is pretty much the cradle of early human civilization.
06:56And the Indus River remains one of the most important rivers in the entire world. So first,
07:01there were the ancient humans making their way along this river and creating the dawn of civilization.
07:09And now there's us. From its humble origins, high in the Himalayas, near the Chinese-India border,
07:15this river stretches all the way through here and onwards all the way to the ocean and forms the
07:22border between India and Pakistan. I don't know exactly how long the river is, but I'm going to look it up
07:28after. So it is this long. Pretty long, hey? What a river. And what a way to ride.
07:44So this highway is not the remote mountain road like what we've been doing for the past few days.
08:07There is just a huge snaking line of trucks. A huge line of trucks. Oh, Navi's going for it.
08:15Okay. I'm going for it.
08:19Yeah. Wow. I can count one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight trucks in my view at the moment.
08:25I don't know if I will be able to overtake them all.
08:28I think we're just going to have to accept the fact that we're going to be stuck in a bit of a queue
08:33today. Such a difference to the crazy remote mountain roads that we were on for the past few days.
08:39Wow. Is that smoky. Jesus. He's going for it. He's going for it. He's going for it. I have to wait
08:50because it's a blind corner here. Nothing like a fuel truck overtaking another fuel truck on a blind
08:55corner. Yeah. But anyway, one good point. We can go nice and slow, look around and just enjoy the
09:03crazy views. And just try to stay one explosion's width away from the truck. Oh,
09:09people stopped here. Okay. Maybe this is our opportunity. Oh no.
09:25You know that whole army convoy that we saw this morning. We have a huge army convoy just in front.
09:38There must be about 15, 20 army trucks. No, we have a serious traffic jam now,
09:46an army truck traffic jam. Should I overtake?
09:49I think you can overtake a bit more as well. Yeah.
10:00Here they are. Oh, look, he's towing a big artillery gun.
10:05Okay. I'm coming in. I'm coming in. Okay.
10:10Oh, that was a little bit nerve wracking. And look, here's a whole bunch of military guys.
10:14Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Some big movements going on here.
10:21I think I can overtake or? I can't really see very well.
10:25I can't see anything. No.
10:27Yeah. There's nobody coming. So just stay on the inside. Nobody coming. Yeah. Yep.
10:44Getting there. Hey, slowly, slowly. One truck after the next.
11:00Still free.
11:22Still free. Go, go, go. Last one. Yes. We did it. We overtook the Indian army.
11:34That must have been about more than 30 trucks in the end. But of course, it doesn't really end there
11:40because now we've got regular trucks. So the battle on the Srinagar lay highway continues.
11:48Well, it looks like we've entered the valley of the stupas here. There is just tons and tons and tons of them
11:55that have been built on the side of the road. And look, there's one of those prayer wheels.
12:01Wow. It looks so pretty here. I'm not sure why they build so many stupas, but they're very beautiful.
12:08They're very beautiful. This whole area is all Tibetan Buddhist. So we've seen lots of monasteries
12:14up on hills, just like the one in Lama Juru this morning. And we've seen lots of beautiful stupas.
12:20Look at this area. Wow. This village just blends in. I like that they use the natural
12:27material from the surrounding area to build the houses. I mean, that's so nice.
12:32I think you can do two. Yeah. Oh, look at the size of this stupa. Wow. That's massive.
12:43Massive. Beautiful area here. Very, very beautiful. It just looks so different as well to the rest of
12:48India, what we have seen, like the architecture. Yeah. This is the traditional style of housing here.
12:54So nice. Single storey with loads of straw and wood on the roof, because that's where they store it.
13:00And then prayer flags. And we've still got our prayer flags here all the way since near the beginning
13:06of the trip. Look at this stupa. Oh, wow. This is like the biggest stupa. Wow. Very pretty.
13:15Here. Check out this place that we found for lunch. It's a cafe, but it's also the world's highest
13:27rafting point. And it is right on the edge of the Indus River. Look at this.
13:37It's crazy. You can see the difference in the color of the water. So the main flow of the Indus
13:42river there is all brown and murky, but this little side stream coming in. I say stream.
13:51This like side river is beautiful glacier blue aquamarine turquoise. Something like that. So cool.
14:02Hi guys. Hi. It's very beautiful here and peaceful. You do rafting. We just do motorcycling.
14:10Okay. Let the river guide your spirit. Like that. Hello.
14:16Hi. Uh, egg, egg maggie? Yes, egg maggie. Yes? Yes. Same? Yeah, that's fine. One egg maggie?
14:24Two egg maggie. Do you have aloparatta? No, okay. That's okay. Two egg maggie.
14:30So this is actually the first time here in India that we ordered egg noodles, like the maggie noodles,
14:37which you can buy everywhere. Normally we just buy the package and we do the noodles ourselves,
14:42but they didn't have anything else here. How is it? Good.
14:46Good. The price of the noodles here is 80 rupees, which is about 80 pence. Pretty good price, eh? For lunch?
14:58It's not every day you get the opportunity
15:28to touch the waters of the Indus River, eh? Yeah. Look at that. The Indus River stretches that way,
15:35all the way past Lei, all the way to China, and joins up here with the Zanskar River.
15:40And then the Zanskar River becomes the Indus River. Pretty cool, eh? Very cool. Very cool.
15:45Anyway, let's get to Lei, shall we? Let's not delay our journey to Lei. Goodbye, beautiful view.
15:56So apparently, on the map, there's a place here called Magnetic Hill. Oh yeah, look. Magnetic Hill.
16:08I'm not entirely sure what the point of Magnetic Hill is. But I read that this place is a bit of an
16:15optical illusion. I don't know if they mean that way or that way, but apparently here,
16:20it looks like you're going uphill, but actually you're going downhill. So they call it the phenomenon
16:25that defies gravity. It says, park your vehicle in the box marked with paint on the road and experience
16:32the wonder. Okay. Where's the box marked with paint? Can you see a box? I'm going to cross over,
16:39I'm going to try and find out where this phenomenon is. Yeah. Oh no, the trucks are coming back. Nooo!
16:49I mean, here is like a sort of mark. Look.
16:56Maybe they mean here? I mean, if I let off the clutch now, I'm going backwards, which is exactly
17:02what I think I would do. I have no idea what it means. I'm going to go and ask the guy at the cafe,
17:07okay? Okay. Excuse me. Where do I park my vehicle to see the phenomenon? You can feel in two-wheelers.
17:17Oh. Usually you can feel in four-wheelers. Oh, only with a four-wheeler. Oh. Actually,
17:23you have to put your vehicle over there. Yeah. And you have to switch off your ignitions. Okay.
17:30After that, you have to feel the illusion. Oh, so where should I park the vehicle? Maybe in that line.
17:36On the line? Yes. Okay. Facing up or facing down? Usually it goes down only. Okay. So actually,
17:43if you park your vehicle there, this is going up? Yes. It was earlier because it was up like this
17:49and it goes down like that. Okay. But gradually, when BRO, Indian Army, take over the road,
17:56and they make it convenient so that it will be sloppy and truck will go up easily. Oh,
18:02so actually now it's not, it doesn't work anymore. Yeah, it doesn't. Actually, it goes that way only.
18:07Okay. Those illusions you cannot feel right now. Okay. I see. Okay. Thank you. Thank you.
18:14So basically, according to the lady, you would park your vehicle here, right? Okay. Yeah. Uh-huh.
18:21And then you would let off. Yeah. And then normally, back in the day, you would, you would, you would roll
18:27that way. Ah, okay. But I mean, at the moment, I'm rolling this way. Okay.
18:34It's a magnetic hill. It's not working anymore. So I don't think it's actually working. Okay.
18:40She said that after the Indian Army came and built the road, they basically ruined everything.
18:45Oh. Yeah. So anyway, it still retains the name magnetic hill, but no phenomenon. Oh,
18:52okay. Anyway, a nice view and a nice hill. Anyway, it sounds like a very dangerous tourist attraction.
18:58Hey, park in the middle of this highway and leave your car unattended with the handbrake off.
19:04Yeah. The point is, guys, don't bother going to magnetic hill from Lai because there is no point.
19:10Except seeing some nice views. Anyway, we've now got only 29 kilometers to go. The final 29 kilometers
19:18with Shanti and Mowgli. Oh. So let's do our final ride in and let's get to Lai.
19:34The final ride in and let's get to Lai.
19:36The final ride in and let's get to Lai.
19:38The final ride in and let's get to Lai.
19:44All right. So this is it in front. We have finally reached Lai. And I'll tell you what,
20:08coming in there is a lot of military stuff going on. Welcome to Lai. We made it my love.
20:17It's quite nice because they still have this traditional architecture.
20:20Yeah. You see, with the really nice window frames.
20:24So pretty. So our first mission is going to be to drop off our stuff at the hotel.
20:28And then we're going to look and see if we can hire some bikes. Hopefully some expulses.
20:35There we go. There's the sign. Welcome to Lai.
20:40And here's a big statue of King Singai Namgal, apparently.
20:46So there you go, guys. If you're wondering how many rides does it take to go from Kanyakamari,
20:52at the very southern tip of India, to Lai, almost to the very north of India. Well,
20:58it takes 62 rides, give or take a little detour over to Ranavkutch. To be honest,
21:03I wasn't really sure that these little 200cc expulses were up to the task. I mean,
21:08I knew we would do, you know, thousands of kilometres, but I really didn't know how far we had to ride.
21:14I thought maybe five or six thousand kilometres. But no, we are at somewhere around 8,800 kilometres.
21:24Yeah, so many kilometres more than I have expected. You're a bona fide Indian rider.
21:29Yay. So there you go. These little expulses, they can do the job. They can cross the whole of India.
21:37Yeah, it's pretty incredible. It's pretty incredible. What are they, like 12 horsepower?
21:41But apparently you don't need more. So good job, Shanti. Good job, Mowgli. We did it. We did it.
21:48And really the only issues that we had with these bikes since the beginning, one flat tyre in Lavassa.
21:55My bike feels a little bit funnier. Oh, you might have a flat tyre. Oh yeah,
21:59I do have a flat tyre. Okay, another flat tyre later on the same day,
22:02but I just count that as one issue. And then one gearbox bearing. That's it. Those are the only issues
22:08that we had the entire trip. Kudos to Tony Bike Centre. Good job. Prepped these bikes for our trip.
22:15But they did a really good job. I mean, they made it from the jungles to the deserts to the mountains.
22:20Absolutely spectacular. But like I said, we still do have some more rides to go to reach our final,
22:27final destination, Umling La Pass, the highest motorable road in the world. Our trip is not over just yet.
22:34But our ride for today is coming to an end because our hotel is just coming up on the right.
22:43Somewhere here. Here. Oh yeah, there we go.
22:49It's a nice sign and a nice gate.
22:51Hello.
23:10Look, check out this beautiful garden. And guys, just look at this place.
23:15It feels like a little traditional village. So cool. I like this hotel already.
23:21But unfortunately, we have to head out again straight away because the guy at reception told us,
23:26okay, if you want to continue to Umling La, you need to get a permit as well as changing bikes.
23:33The thing is, is that tomorrow is Sunday and the permit office is not going to be open.
23:37So he said, you better go now and then they can issue you the permit. And that means that we're going to be good to go.
23:44We'll also go and talk to a bike hire company whilst we're there because it's all in the same area.
23:49It's all in Ladakh market. There, they also have loads of places where you can hire bikes.
23:54So we're going to see if we can find ourselves a lovely set of expulses.
23:58Okay. All right, jump on.
24:01Just a tiny bit further.
24:11Yeah, I'll just park here.
24:19Okay.
24:22Hello. Hi, hello. How are you?
24:24Oh, okay.
24:24At the moment, Umling La is closed.
24:27For foreigners, it's closed.
24:29But maybe when you reach, yeah.
24:30Maybe when we reach, okay.
24:33But we can still go to Nubra and Pangong and Hanlei.
24:36And then when we get to Hanlei, we need to see.
24:39Yeah, you talk.
24:40Okay.
24:41We can't say anything.
24:42Okay.
24:42One person fill up this.
24:44Okay.
24:44Okay.
24:45You will get this evening.
24:46You collect your passport and permit.
24:48Okay.
24:48And come on the day after tomorrow.
24:49Perfect.
24:49Perfect.
24:50You coming by bike?
24:52Yes, yes.
24:53We went from Manali to Jispa.
24:57And then Jispa to Padong.
24:59Padong to Lama Yuru.
25:02And then here.
25:02Okay.
25:03Behind the building, so many bike renters.
25:05Okay.
25:06You talk to them.
25:06Okay.
25:06Perfect.
25:07Yeah.
25:11Okay.
25:13Step one is done.
25:14We have put in the application for our permit.
25:16He said to come back in the evening around six o'clock.
25:19And he should have it ready for us.
25:21So now we're going to go and see if we can find ourselves some bikes to rent.
25:26He said just go around the corner here.
25:28And he said there are loads of places.
25:30Find a couple of expulses.
25:33And then negotiate the price.
25:34Which I'm leaving up to Lavi.
25:36Do you know if there's a place with expuls?
25:53Is there maybe another place this way?
25:55Yeah, you can go.
25:56Go this way?
25:57Okay.
25:58Yes.
25:59The thing is that everybody here is renting Himalayans.
26:04That's like the go-to bike.
26:06But the issue is is that we've never ridden that bike before.
26:09It's going to be a bit of a learning curve.
26:12We have to learn now how to ride that bike.
26:15Yeah, because you know it's 40 kilo heavier than the expuls.
26:19And the whole reason we chose the expuls in the first place was because it was nice and light.
26:23So that Lavi could control it with your tiny little legs.
26:26Yes.
26:27So anyway, we're going to keep walking around a little bit.
26:30Yeah.
26:31And see if we can find anyone renting an expuls.
26:34Just Himalayas.
26:44So we just ran into Siring and Tashi.
26:47Hi.
26:47Hi guys.
26:48Hi.
26:48Hi YouTube.
26:49Hi YouTube.
26:51And these guys follow us on Instagram.
26:54And they were like, come, come to our shop.
26:56And then we told them we were looking for motorbikes.
26:59So they made a couple of calls and they got us a couple of expulses.
27:03You're our heroes.
27:05Yeah.
27:05So that's awesome because we were walking around here.
27:08We couldn't find anybody with expulses.
27:10Thank you so much.
27:11Same here.
27:11You're welcome.
27:12You also have a shop here?
27:13Yep.
27:13It's right over there.
27:14Oh, okay.
27:15Okay.
27:15Let's go check it out.
27:16These street vendors put souvenir shops are privately owned by Tibetan refugees.
27:21Okay.
27:22So this is all owned by Tibetans living here in Ladakh.
27:25Yeah.
27:25Oh, you're doing nice stuff.
27:27Yeah.
27:27Very nice.
27:29Beautiful.
27:30That's called prayer wheel.
27:31How do you do that?
27:31You're supposed to go as a clockwise.
27:32I'll show you.
27:33Clockwise?
27:34So when you go to Tibet or in the Ladakh, most of the monastery when you go there,
27:38you have to go there in the clockwise.
27:40So it's called prayer wheel.
27:41It contains the scripture.
27:43Okay.
27:43Right?
27:45Is this like a mini version of the ones we see on the side of the road?
27:48Exactly.
27:48You know the big ones and you turn them?
27:49When you go around Ladakh, you will see elderly people getting one of these, the bigger one.
27:54So when we see the big ones on the side of the road, should we turn that clockwise?
27:58Yep.
27:58And what are you supposed to do?
27:59To make a prayer?
28:00Yep.
28:01Ah, okay.
28:02It says Om Mani Padme Hum.
28:04Om Mani Padme Hum.
28:05Om Mani Padme Hum.
28:06Om Mani Padme Hum.
28:08Okay.
28:08Okay.
28:09Om Mani Padme Hum.
28:12Thank you so much for coming over to us and saying hello.
28:16And saying hello to YouTube.
28:17Hello YouTube.
28:19All right.
28:33This is the central market of Leh and you've got all these beautiful flags up top.
28:39Wow.
28:39Very nice.
28:40So we just made it back here to the hotel and now we can just rest for a few hours because a
28:46little bit later on we will head back into town to get our permits.
28:50And also our new friend Tashi organized some bikes for us, which is absolutely amazing.
28:57So we will head later to this place to check out the bikes as well and see if they're working.
29:02By the way, this is our lovely hotel room, super spacious.
29:19Oh wow, with nice view.
29:22That's really nice.
29:24This is the bathroom.
