00:00Europe is trying to rearm fast, but is
00:04lacking qualified people to design or
00:06produce the volume of material needed.
00:08To meet this challenge, the European
00:11Commission on Wednesday proposed an
00:13upskilling plan as part of its defense
00:15industry transformation roadmap. The EU
00:18says it wants 600,000 people to be
00:21upskilled or reskilled for the defense
00:23industry by 2030. Andréus Kubilius, the
00:27European Commissioner for Defense, told
00:29Euronews that the measures aimed to
00:31upskill around 12% of the existing
00:33defense and aerospace workforce each year.
00:36This shortage is a problem for both the
00:40supply side, where disruptive technologies
00:42such as AI and quantum are being
00:45developed for defense applications, and the
00:47demand side, where armed forces and
00:49procurement bodies need expertise to
00:51quickly acquire and integrate these new
00:53systems. In 2023, the EU defense industry
00:57generated around 581,000 jobs and a turnover
01:01of 158.8 billion euros.
