00:00Very pleased to be joined now on the back of some very exciting news around these parts in the
00:05baseball community. He is John Milton, program advisor with the Okotoks Dogs as we get ready for
00:11the road to Okotoks, a big thing happening with Canadian baseball that is going to culminate
00:16with a tournament in Okotoks, Alberta in the summer of 2026. John, exciting times. How are
00:23you today? Oh, I'm doing well and thanks for having me on, Peter. You're right, it is exciting times
00:29and as Baseball Canada has mentioned in the press release, it's an actually, it's a beginning of a
00:34new era in amateur baseball in Canada. And we are coming off of an era that's pretty successful
00:41already and to see it being built on now is very exciting. So I guess the road to Okotoks,
00:47we got regional qualifiers happening May 28th to June 31st, 2026 and then the national championship
00:55for the Morano Cup, which I love the name of, happening in Okotoks in July. I guess from your
01:01perspective and everything that goes into this, how did this all come together and how big is this
01:07for something like this to be coming to Okotoks and here in Southern Alberta?
01:12This has been something that's been many, many, many years in the making and there's been many hands
01:19that have played a part in making it happen. A lot of kudos goes to, you know, obviously Baseball
01:27Canada, Jason Dixon, Greg Hamilton. I remember years ago, Greg and I having a conversation about
01:36this, you know, and it was going to be a little bit different of a format, but the same principle.
01:43We were, we were very committed to the academies and, and also the, the elite travel programs
01:54coming together and having one major tournament because there was nothing for them. Let's fast
02:02forward now, you know, dogs, our dogs, managing director, John Arcandia kind of picked up the ball
02:09and, and, and ran with it. And, and, you know, you know, now we're partnering with, with Baseball
02:16Canada in this event. And it's going to be huge for, and I spoke about Canada and it's, it's going
02:22to be a new era for amateur baseball in Canada. But I think the fact that the WBSC, which is, is the,
02:32the world organization governing organization for baseball softball just this, just this week,
02:39put out a release mentioning the road to Okotoks. So for, uh, you know, for, for, uh, a small town
02:48of Okotoks, uh, to be getting, um, you know, mentioned on the world stage, I think that's
02:54huge for baseball. Um, not just here in Okotoks, but Alberta, Canada, and, and obviously across the
03:00world. Yeah. And I, I love that this is going to bring more of a spotlight to, to what's happening
03:05out here. And obviously like there, there, there's a bias here. You can see the sweater that I'm
03:09wearing. Um, we know our fashion that's for sure. Um, but I, I do play my play for the Okotoks dogs
03:17and, and all of that. So I, I, I certainly have a side in this whole thing, but to see how things
03:22have progressed, not just with the dogs program and the amazing facilities out at Seaman stadium,
03:27but then you look at the major league baseball draft and Alberta's coming up a whole lot more.
03:33And, uh, the, the people from the dogs Academy have a lot more social media work to do. Um,
03:38and I remember on draft day, uh, when I was, um, filling in on sports net nine 60, we had a draft
03:43guy on and he wrote a story about Canadians that were going in the major league baseball draft. And
03:49before that's a post-it note. Now it's a big story. And just to see the progress that has happened
03:55there and now to be able to build on it, it has to be just so exciting for you to watch all this
04:00kind of grow and develop. Oh, absolutely. And, and, you know, we just have to actually look at just
04:05yesterday in the, in the major league playoffs, we had Andrew Kittredge, the former Okotok dog
04:10starting for the Cubs. Um, Mike Soroka, uh, from Calgary, um, you know, pitching, uh, you know,
04:19um, you know, the reliever from, uh, from the guardians, uh, from, from Edmonton, uh, pitching,
04:25so, you know, it's, it's, it, again, it's, it's huge for the, uh, it's huge for local baseball.
04:31It's huge, huge for the, for the province to, uh, to have this. And, you know, the, the other
04:37thing too, is I think the, the exposure to the community and community, you know, of, and even
04:42just, uh, the, uh, Alberta itself, um, is going to be great for, uh, for all, for all the interest
04:49parties. And so for, uh, to be able to, to host something like this, I would imagine,
04:55um, like, obviously it, like you said before, it's not just, Hey, do you want to have a
04:59tournament? Do you want to have a tournament? Let's have a tournament that there's a lot
05:01that goes into it. Uh, but I'm, I'm sure all that work kind of pays off when you get
05:05to kind of show off everything that that's going on at Siemens stadium and with the field
05:09house and everything like that.
05:10Well, absolutely. And especially with all the renovations that we have going on in the
05:14expansion of our, uh, hitting and pitching lab and, and, you know, uh, Siemens stadium
05:20and, and term line field, um, you know, obviously Siemens being the crown jewel. And, and I think
05:26it's the, it's, it's a ballpark that I think when, when you get there and you experience
05:32it, you go, this is, this is like a minor league ballpark and the excitement that in the
05:37buzz in there. I remember the first time that I, that I was in the stadium, I kind of likened
05:43it to, uh, Thunder Bay. I was at the world championships in Thunder Bay, uh, Friday night,
05:49Canada, Cuba, and, uh, it was electric and, and the, the, the sizzle and, and, and everything
05:57that goes into the stadium and, and, and the people there. Um, it's, uh, it, it really,
06:03it compares. And I think that, um, this event is going to be perfect for, uh, Siemens stadium
06:09and for term line. And it's going to, you know, it's going to show that, you know, not
06:13everything is, and I come from the East. I'm originally from, from Ontario, um, now in
06:18Alberta. Uh, but, uh, it's going to show that, you know what, we have great facilities out
06:23here, uh, in Alberta and that our facilities are a real class.
06:28Yeah. And that, that's something like I, I grew up in a baseball household. My dad was
06:33president of minor ball in my hometown. And, and so to, to get all that attention on the
06:37sport here, I, I absolutely love it. But I remember my first time going through and doing
06:42the, the tour of everything and seeing it like the ballpark is stunning. Um, it's exactly
06:46what summer should be like basically. And then you walk through the field house and you
06:50see all the different facilities they have. And then you hear, Oh yeah, we're doing renovations
06:54and improvements. It's like, where? Cause I, like I, I grew up and we played on a gravel
06:59ball, a ball diamond and you had the pitching machine where just a yellow ball slowly goes
07:04through and right at you. And then to, to see all of this, I guess, obviously when you
07:09get to the level that you guys have with the dogs, there's obviously you have to be
07:14able to accept like, Hey, we we've done pretty well, but there does seem to be a, we need
07:18to do more. We need to do more. How can we keep growing? Where does that kind of growth
07:22mentality come from?
07:23Well, that comes from our managing director, John Arcandia. Uh, John is, is, is on us every
07:28day. Um, how do we get better? And, and, and, and he, and he really challenges us and, and
07:35he gives us the latitude and he gives us the resources, um, uh, to do that. So, um, you
07:43know, really that's, that's the driving force right there. And also to, um, the, the people
07:49that we have on staff led by our general manager, Tyler Hollick. Um, he, he, you know, again,
07:55it's, it's a passion, but we also want to make sure that we're doing what's right for
08:00the dogs and, you know, um, and right for our players. And that was one of the really
08:06the, the driving forces behind the, uh, the new renovations that you see, um, and the
08:12expansion of our weight room and our pitching, pitching and hitching, pitching and hitting
08:17lab. Um, when looking at something like this, it does really seem like once that ball gets
08:23rolling success can kind of build on itself, right? Like you get, you have this gorgeous
08:27ballpark, people come out to it. You now have funding to, to kind of help the players
08:31out a little bit. They in turn get better, bring more success that brings in all the
08:36other financial stuff. And then all of a sudden you can kind of build on those sorts
08:39of things. I guess for you being around the organization, was there kind of a light bulb
08:44moment? Like, Oh, this is working now sort of a moment for you.
08:48Yeah. You know what? I think it's, it's when you see the success that our, that our
08:53teams have had, our academy teams have had, and our, obviously our WCBL team has
08:59had, um, you know, you look at this year, our, our 18U, um, academy team was ranked
09:04number two in North America. Um, again, we talk about Okotoks being a small little
09:10town, but you know, again, we're getting recognized on, on the national stage and
09:14international stage. Um, you know, with our WCBL franchise, obviously, you know, the,
09:20the amount of championships that we had, you know, we went three in a row. We, we came
09:24up a little short this year for four. Um, but we're, we're already in the process of
09:28planning and recruiting and, and, and getting better. And, and, and I think it's, it's,
09:33it's, it's those moments right there, um, that really drive us to get better. But I
09:39think the, the one thing that we, we always try to do is, is, you know, again, I go back
09:44to, to what John always says to us is, is how can we get better? How can we get better?
09:49What can we, what, what do the players need to get better? And, um, you know, those are
09:54the kind of moments that, you know, um, really drive us.
09:58And then with all of that, and that was something like this back to the road to Okotoks and the
10:03Morno cup, something like this, where, um, scouts can all kind of just congregate, right?
10:09Like it is, there's access to a lot of video and a lot of everything now, but it is, it's
10:13still when you can make a scout's job easier and all of a sudden there's instead of one
10:18or two prospects, now there's 50 or a hundred or something like that. People are going to
10:23flock and just being able to bring that attention. Now, how important is kind of that in the
10:26next step? And like you said, the next era of baseball, not just in Okotoks, but in
10:31Canada. Oh, it's going to be huge. Um, you know, having a, not just the professional
10:36scouts, uh, coming in, but the college recruiters coming in as well. Um, because, you know,
10:42obviously, you know, not everybody's going to be a pro ball player coming out of high
10:45school and with the draft being kind of shrunk to 20 rounds. Um, that's something that, that
10:49really, we really need to look at. Um, and also too, it's, you know, what, yeah, we, we're,
10:55we're very well known on the, uh, on the, on the international and national stage, but there's
11:00some that still don't understand, uh, who we are and what we do. And, um, and there's
11:06going to be some that don't understand how great the facilities are here. So having them
11:11all kind of come together for this road to Okotoks is, uh, is, is massive and it's massive
11:17for the community and for the province. Yeah. And it, it always strikes me when you see, uh,
11:23a guy come to the, the dogs team, the, the collegiate level team, and they're, they're
11:29their own guy from the, their team one year. And then the next year, all of a sudden there's
11:32two or three from that school that are coming in and now four or five. And then all of a sudden
11:36half the teams from Reinhardt or something like that, you know, like there's, it's, it
11:40is always noteworthy how it kind of starts with one and then, okay, well, I want to get
11:44in on that. And you got Matt stairs. Okay. I'll, I'll, I'll talk to Matt stairs. And now those
11:49it sort of builds. And I guess, again, just, it does feel like this has all just been blowing
11:53smoke so far, but I just, I cannot express how just mind boggling it is to walk into that
11:59facility every day to see the work that is going in, to see the progress and then to
12:03see kind of the proof of concepts, like those players coming in that the dogs championship,
12:07the academy teams going out and just running shop in every tournament down in the States
12:11and everything like that, that proof of concept has to, I understand, like you said, where
12:15there is, how can we get better every day where we're trying to improve? Do you get a
12:19moment to kind of step back and go, man, we're, we're kind of killing it right now.
12:23Yeah. That's usually about the third week in August. We, we have about a few days where
12:28we, where we celebrate everything that we did. You know, this year we had our, our 15
12:33U and our 13 U's represent Alberta at the baseball Canada national championships. And
12:39obviously, you know, with our, with our WCBL team and our 18 U, but yeah, you know what,
12:43it's, you used to get a few days to figure it out. And then after that, it's, it's, it's
12:48constant planning. And I think that's really where we kind of separate ourselves. You know,
12:53you mentioned Matt stairs, Matt, Matt is actually currently with our 18 U program as they travel
12:59the Western U S playing U S colleges and universities. So yeah, we, we, we don't, we don't take a lot
13:09of time to relish in it. Cause I think if we do, and, and this is one thing that I really
13:14applaud our group for doing is that we really don't sit on our laurels. We, we really look at
13:20each other and we, we push each other and, and it's okay. Yeah, we did. We, we, we may have had
13:2763 wins for our 18 U program. How can we get to 64, 65? And, and we're always kind of pushing for
13:35that. And there are other programs around that are pushing now as well, not, not just down in the
13:41States, but here a lot of people. And again, like the dogs are, aren't the first ones to do this,
13:47but just doing it very well. But you see a lot of the programs like Vox hall, uh, which has been
13:51around for a long time and has a good reputation, but they've been very strong prairie baseball
13:55academy. And I think it is noteworthy that the Saskatoon berries, when they launched a couple of
14:01years ago, one of the very first things was, Oh, and by the way, academy, uh, we, we want to,
14:06to kind of build this pipeline. And so while it is, yes, uh, the, the dogs have done this very,
14:10very well, but the, the folks down in Lethbridge and out in Saskatchewan, aren't going to let you rest
14:15on your laurels because they're coming just as strong. Right. That's correct. And, and, and,
14:20you know, this, this is, you know, when I, when I talk to people about the academy programs that we
14:25have out here in the West, um, one of the things I like to talk about is, is that I think it's great
14:32for us to have those programs being successful. I think if they're successful, that just makes us
14:39even better. And, and it makes us, you know, drive even harder to, uh, to become better. And, uh,
14:47and, and it makes it better for the game and for the players in the province.
14:50Yeah. Rising tides, right? Like that, that, that competition makes you guys want to be better
14:54and better for all the players, right? Like I, I made the joke before about how only a couple kids
14:59get drafted from Canada in the beginning. And now that number is growing. Um, well, I do think
15:04obviously that there's been a lot of work that, that has gone into it. I do think that there was
15:08also missed opportunities feels a bit harsh, but there has always been talent up here and now for
15:14it to get that opportunity to cultivate a little bit more, get those bigger opportunities to, to go
15:18to, to bigger schools in the States and bigger tournaments. Um, like all of that, like you said,
15:23it is just, it's not just for the Okotoks dogs or not just for the Lethbridge bulls, but it is for
15:28Canada baseball and the growth of the sport in this country as a whole.
15:32Yeah. And then that's the way that, that I think this is what really makes Canada unique in terms
15:38of, of, of, of the, of the baseball structure and how close knit we are. Um, a lot of us really
15:43believe in how can we make it better, obviously for ourselves, but how can we make it better for,
15:49um, us on the national stage and, and, you know, the more, more Canadians that we get at U S schools,
15:56uh, playing professional baseball, um, it, it will make it better for, for the game in general.
16:03And so what, with this, um, tournament now with the, the, the road to, to Okotoks and all of that,
16:10if we're, uh, in the ears and under the eyes of some people who want to get their teams involved in
16:16this and all of that, how can people, I guess, kind of get involved from a, um, a team and a
16:22competition standpoint, and maybe just want to help out with the tournament around here as well.
16:25In terms of, of the teams, um, you know, there's the road to Okotoks, uh, website at the road to
16:32Okotoks.ca. Um, all the, uh, information is there. Um, there's going to be a player portal, um,
16:40for, uh, players from their teams to, uh, register starting, I believe around early November.
16:47And, um, all the registration information is, is going to be on there. Um, some teams have been
16:54identified already for the, uh, for the regional qualifiers. Um, but, uh, that's how, uh, you know,
17:01players and teams can go to, to register, uh, in terms of, uh, you know, uh, volunteer assistance,
17:08we need a lot of it and, and, and we're, we're, you know, many hands make light work. So, um, if,
17:15if anybody has, um, has some time and, and they want to, uh, want to volunteer, uh, obviously,
17:22you know what, contact our office, um, reach out to our office and you can find all that information
17:27on, uh, dogs, baseball.ca. Um, but also too, we're going to be, uh, uh, uh, launching our, our ticket,
17:35uh, program, uh, come in the next month. So, uh, for those of you that want to come, uh, you know,
17:42watch, uh, our Okotoks dogs play or, or, or any team that, that, or just see some great baseball,
17:49uh, you know, we're going to be announcing our ticket packages, uh, very shortly.
17:54Um, and again, there is a bias here, but I, I've never met anyone who's gone to a game out in,
17:59in Okotoks. I mean, yeah, it was okay. Uh, like it is always such a great experience and everything
18:04around it. And now to, to add onto it, that some of the best players in the country coming to,
18:08to one spot for a few days, it's going to be such an amazing atmosphere and everything with that,
18:14uh, with you guys. Now, I always feel weird asking this question that this is an amazing,
18:17amazing accomplishment and a big milestone and something to work toward. And so it's like you
18:22said, you get this, okay, congratulations. What's next. So what, what, what is kind of,
18:26what would you like to see next in the progression of everything with the, the academy and the dogs
18:31as a whole, you guys have the, uh, renovations happening with the field house again this year and
18:36everything like that. Are we, like I said, you're running out of things to improve at that place.
18:40Are we building a dome? Um, 45,000 seats out. We're just getting rid of the highway out there.
18:45Like what's, what's next for you guys? Well, I mean, we're always looking at stadium renovations.
18:51Um, how can we make it better for our fans? And those, that's, that's something that we're
18:55definitely looking at right now. A couple of different areas that, um, that, that we're, uh,
18:59we're presently looking at, you know, increasing, um, a little bit of the capacity. Cause it's sometimes,
19:04you know, as you see on Canada today and opening day, it's, it's, it's pretty packed. And, and, uh,
19:10so we're, we're, we're looking at, at some different areas of where we could add some
19:14additional seating. Um, and then we're looking at, you know, how do we make things better at the,
19:19at the, at the stadium for our fans and, and just, you know, that fan aspect and, um,
19:25our fans are, are everything to us. And Will Gardner says it all the time and, and he's,
19:30he's bang on, we have the best fans in the world, um, and the most loyal fans in the world.
19:36Um, so, you know, I, I think we always need to take care of them. And that's one of the things,
19:41you know, some of those creature comforts that, uh, that our fans are looking for and how can we
19:45make the experience better for them? I guess for you like that, obviously that the focus is on the
19:51dogs, but there is again, that community aspect and everything with the expansions and with all of
19:55that. Is it tough to kind of have, I guess, growth mindset of looking to expand and looking to, to be
20:01bigger and looking to do all these things, but we do have to understand we have a core community here
20:06that we have to kind of treat to as well and not, I guess, not try to, to outgrow what we already have
20:14with those people. Is that kind of a tough balance to walk? Yeah. You know, we, we want to still make
20:19it a, a homey experience and, and very small and intimate. And we want to make sure that we're,
20:25we're, we're visible, um, to our fans and, and, uh, and we want to make sure that, excuse me,
20:32they're, they're always happy. Um, will there come a time when, you know, it's, it's, we've,
20:38we've maxed out, excuse me. I don't know. You know, I think we still have a lot of,
20:43a lot of road there ahead of us. Um, you know, if it's not, if it's not so much on at Seaman
20:49stadium, is it a terminal line? Um, you know, got some exciting things, uh, plan there, especially
20:55built around, um, the, uh, the Morno cup and the road to Okotoks. Um, so, you know, there's
21:01going to be some renovations going on there as well. So, um, you know, yeah, I mean, there
21:07might be a time when we get, we get maxed out, but it's, I think that's a, that's, that's a long
21:12time off yet. That's fair. Um, I guess now for you, what does the winter hold? Um, based
21:18on the wonderful country that we live in, that there are some limitations to what baseball
21:22things can happen, um, as we go into the colder months and everything like that. So in terms
21:27of getting ready for this tournament, in terms of getting the kids ready for another season
21:32and all of that, well, what do the next few months have before we kind of thaw out again?
21:36I think the next few months are, are the critical months. Um, if we talk from the
21:42road to Okotoks perspective, I mean, this is when the planning and the work has to get
21:46done. Um, you don't want to be like I was in high school where I left everything to the
21:51last minute and crammed and, and, you know, basically just barely got by. Um, because
21:56that's not, that's not how we run things. Um, you know, everything that we do is going
21:59to be first class. Um, in terms of our athletes, uh, it's a critical time. It's, uh, you're
22:06just finishing up, you know, your fall season, uh, which will end, you know, somewhere
22:10in, in early November. And then, uh, then it's, you know, getting, you know, on strength
22:15conditioning, um, you know, uh, you know, dieting, um, all, all those different types
22:21of things. And with our, you know, our, our million dollar, uh, new weight room that we
22:26have, um, that compares to anything, uh, at a D one program, uh, you know, our athletes
22:32are going to have the best of everything, um, going forward and our strength and conditioning
22:36staff are just outstanding. So that's where our athletes are. And then obviously, you
22:41know, once we get into, uh, the January time period, then it's go time. Now it's out, that's
22:47kind of our spring training, um, just an extended period. Um, and then, uh, really we want to
22:53hit the ground running come, come really kind of end of March, beginning of April.
22:58Yeah. I, I loved how this was put one time where, um, the, the off season is like you hear
23:02all the time. Oh, I live for baseball, eat, sleep and breathe baseball, all these things.
23:06Like, this is my focus. This is my life. It's like, okay. That that's easy to say when
23:09we're playing every game, playing games every day. Those are the fun things. This is where
23:13you get to prove that this is the life that this is what you want to be doing. And this
23:17is where you make those improvements. It's it's the time where you do lift all the weights
23:21and the dieting, which is, uh, obviously the parts where I struggled with. It was just strength,
23:25training, dieting, and talent. Aside from that, I was right there, but, um, but this is
23:29kind of that, that time where it's okay. You say you breathe this stuff, show us that
23:33this is where you can make a lot of those improvements.
23:35Absolutely. It's to me, it's a separator. This is, what's going to separate you. It's
23:40going to separate the athletes that are going to be elite athletes and the ones like you said
23:45that they like, I always compare it to there's guys that like the game and there's guys that
23:52love the game and the ones that love the game do the extra. And this is their time.
23:59So, um, you know, and, and, and it goes, you know, again, for, for our office staff too.
24:05Um, this is where we either we're going to like it or we're going to love it. And we,
24:09we're very fortunate that we have a lot of people that love it. And, uh, so we're, we're going to
24:14make this, this upcoming off season. It's going to be a busy one for us, um, on many fronts,
24:19but, uh, we're, we're really excited and really proud to, uh, to be hosting a event like the,
24:25uh, Road to Oak Tokes.
24:26Well, and that pride comes through and to have it rewarded with something like this is it's really
24:31exciting for baseball fans around here. I love that this is something that's happening and it does
24:35feel like, uh, while we've had a lot of progress, it feels like the start of something very, very
24:40big. Uh, John, thank you so much for, for all the work you do with the sport here in Alberta. And,
24:44uh, thanks for taking some time today in what is again, your off season. Uh, thank you so much
