Metro Boomin want some more. The prolific producer is still in season, supporting his latest project, 'A Futuristic Summa,' carrying the vibes from the heat of August in Atlanta through the fall and beyond. Metro was back in the A to talk with V-103's Greg Street about this truly collaborative double album, his journey and grind to success, and the lessons he learned from his mother.

00:00Is you rolling? Is you rolling? Is you rolling? Is you rolling? Greg I might be
00:11Metro we're going we're going futuristic summer yes sir it's gonna be a futuristic year it's fall
00:21we got winter and spring so it's going down full circle congratulations I appreciate that man the
00:29work ethic of Metro Boomin I already know it's crazy it tastes a lot for sure man Rico you talk about it
00:37years ago like this boy is so focused oh yeah Rick knows better than 99 percent of anybody so
00:43the whole concept now you was doing the weekend records of course 21 um future of course and just
00:51so many projects djing and just out of the blue here comes futuristic summer right what was on your mind
00:59man I was really uh I had started working on my next solo album and I was just doing that kind
01:09of solitude for a minute just doing that and just to myself and I don't know man like that era was I
01:19was in high school then so that was my ninth grade 10th grade 11th grade so really a lot of music from
01:27back then from growing up is what I listened to like in the car or in the gym or just
01:32wherever on my normal routine so yeah it just hit me I was just like man
01:39we could really do this um really just put something it didn't even really start out as an idea
01:49for a mixtape it really just in the beginning I was just listening to everything that I was inspired by
01:54back then and just recognizing that the the futuristic sound I feel like that run was such a short run
02:03for like how incredible the music and the sonics and everything around it was crazy j money l a
02:09crazy you got j money l a dro dro you know you got rich kids of course tz dollar you got you got it
02:17so much music future how did you come up with the artist that you were gonna put because you you
02:23really went there like so me being doing what I do and understanding the game a little bit I could
02:30see like there was a lot of paying homage and just a lot of paying respects to the people that you was
02:35looking at when you was blowing up watching these guys go crazy right oh yeah man oh I really just
02:43I just I went to the roots with it instead of like trying to take the route of taking the idea
02:47of the sound and doing something else with it like more like paying homage and getting to work with a
02:53lot of my heroes and the people that inspired to you know um help whether they knew it or not make up
03:00the man you see today you know what I'm saying uh so yeah it was easy for me man like I came up a
03:06late j money dro like frisky guapo guap you know what I'm saying then it was also even easier because
03:13and a no-brainer because a lot of the people on the tape are actually like you know what I'm saying
03:20my partners are people that I got love for or you know what I'm saying we done came in the game and had
03:25our own uh growth and trials and tribulations together like you know what I'm saying I know guap from
03:30way back then I know shot from back when I was in high school shot was one of the first people to start
03:35rapping on my beats wow as soon as he left the rich kids his first tape I did the intro and um
03:41stop right there stop right there those two names right there let everybody know when it comes to
03:47the futuristic movement how important guapo is with that run it up man guap guap had a bunch of man like
03:58it's one of them rare cases where you see somebody come from a group and then they go solo and it's
04:05like you know a lot of times people go solo and they kind of don't you know hit the same but it's
04:10like man when guap went solo it's just like it's like it even elevated him you know what I'm saying
04:15like he had a bunch of solo records like uh run it up he had um even way back then the crin that like
04:24he just he just kept coming with him kept going he kept he's so creative he is and and and shard to god
04:30like people don't understand how important shard is to the fabric of everything that goes on
04:36with the music the swag the whole nine yeah shard is like the he's a mastermind man like you know
04:43i'm saying and i love the dynamic it's like they all respect him as like the mastermind and like
04:50just the big bruh like the you know i'm saying that could lead the ship you know and shard's great
04:55and you know even before this mixtape i was already listening to uh all the stuff he's been
05:01putting out like in the past year and everything and he's been on a real tear man like shard like
05:07when it just comes down to rapping bruh like he he's he's one of the top of them top five in the city
05:13right now oh shard crazy just rapping when it comes to we got a rich kid project coming out with me
05:17shard and uh oh yeah we already did it we did it almost a year ago that's too hot that's too hot
05:24now go down the list of artists that's on this project okay so we got jay money that was the first
05:30person i locked in with um roscoe dash you know i'm saying another big huge part of it just even
05:39even day-to-day in the studio just bounce ideas off me and him it's like you know i'm saying he helped
05:44me steer the ship with this um dro you got like we just said a rich road went crazy man dro
05:51dro went crazy dro went nuclear and like even laying the tape out like track list wise that's
05:59why i feel like it was so cool for him to just have that moment of just that homage like he got um
06:04he got his verse on girls want to have fun then after that you got the um soon you got the stealing
06:12all the swag uh wtf going moment and then partying it's just like really showcasing like
06:18one of the true true pioneers and just you know i'm saying ogs and fathers of all of this you know
06:25i'm saying and and more than just paying homage just showing that like he hasn't missed the beat he
06:30hasn't missed the step more than anything like i feel like he's an elevator he's going up you know
06:34i'm saying so like and i feel like everybody recognized that so it's great to see him get his
06:39flowers and his whole transition for what he went through to where he is yeah even on the
06:43personal side like if you know about that story and just you know how inspiring that is like super
06:47i've been telling you how to put the book out he got mad dro got to put a biopic out one day like
06:52just everything that you know i'm saying just that we publicly know that he's been through i can't
06:56imagine what he'd have been through like just on his own and i respect him and commend him for
07:01always being so vocal about you know i'm saying his his trials tribulations and shortcomings and you
07:07know seeing where he is now just inspiring others that uh they could overcome whatever they're
07:13going through as well all right and yk yeah shout out to yk see we had a mix in the old school with
07:18the you know i'm saying because at the same time even before this tape you know you had people like
07:25her uh bonner bonner going crazy pluto like the girls they were really like on the old sound already
07:32you know i'm saying so like that's why i wanted to make sure to have bonner on the tape yk
07:36because it's like bridging the gap from what they're doing right now to like revive that sound and just
07:42you know i'm saying breathe life back into atlanta uh and just mesh that with
07:48uh a lot of the founders that like set the foundation to do what we're doing now the whole
07:55futuristic movement oh movement you know we still got baby on there we still got uh like i said lay
08:02um walk on there walk on there a few times going crazy you know i was there like it's such a list
08:09like flop flop went crazy um man so many people two chains came in in the 19th hour on 23rd hour
08:21no he ain't gonna miss it yeah he ain't gonna miss it he was saying that too like he just pulled
08:25up one day yeah he just pulled up one day just to uh just to really hear what we was doing
08:30and you know what i'm saying wasn't even because that's my boy for real virgo tick curry at the
08:34buzzer tick curry you feel me and after i played him everything we had one time he was just like
08:40no i'm not missing this like basically like what you just said like you know i'm saying y'all not
08:45i'm not getting left off this one and he came and overly delivered um everybody did man like
08:51it really the whole tape really made itself i feel like i feel like it was just great vibes
08:57with everybody at the studio every day and everybody just contributing with no ego with no
09:03oh what's this song for what you about to do with this or can i use this for this or it was none of
09:08that everybody just like travis porter can't forget you know i'm saying it was just everybody just
09:14showing that genuine love and camaraderie camaraderie and just going in and out of booth we had three
09:19rooms studio rooms working the same time so you know we had producers up there at the same time
09:24uh with a shout out my brother dj plug c note um bobby critical spins of course like you know we all
09:33just at studio every day three rooms going the same time it's artists and producers going in and out
09:38every room like just not even like yeah nah we did we did we got most of it we did we did we did so
09:46it's like it was it was really magic man like it wasn't even no pressure no ego like oh let me try
09:51force my way on this song just really coming in seeing what you know i'm saying what niggas is
09:56doing and oh that sound cool or somebody could just walk in and be like oh now you lay this verse man i need
10:03you try hook or this or that that and man it was just beautiful man like i'll never forget and i've
10:09always said this is definitely by far the most fun i've ever had making a project you know i'm saying
10:16now working with the bigger artists like weekend and all those artists do you work with them like
10:20in the studio or do they mostly send verses oh studio studio i'm big on like just with everybody
10:26whoever i'm working with like studio i don't really like sending stuff to work with people
10:32now like sometimes if i need a verse from somebody on something and like the core the song is there
10:37and schedules don't align i could send it in but if i'm just going in with somebody we cooking up for
10:43something we cooking up for a project we're doing or i'm doing or they're doing i really like to get
10:47in the room man because i know that's how just putting both our minds together we could get the best
10:52out of what we're trying to do right don't mess up the art don't mess up the art it's not science
10:58it's art it's art man it's not science it's art you know we're just letting it flow
11:02just a vessel uh you know and i just let god work and i'm just a vessel it just works through
11:08me in the flesh and you let god work too because like i mean from from winning bt awards and billboard
11:14awards for collabs and for different projects and touring djing like what's a what's a weekend like
11:22in vegas for the residency with metro booming uh it's fun live is fun it's cool uh we have a great
11:31time we usually uh it's always a great show you know a great crowd and djing in vegas is different
11:38than any other show i do in other markets because you know in vegas like people are here from
11:44everywhere you know what i'm saying like you don't know there's people from out of country
11:47somebody be here from london you got new york you got arizona you got you know i'm saying so it's
11:53just uh just as a set as a whole just finding that happy middle ground where like everybody's
12:00rocking the whole time you know so that's cool you know vegas it be lit you know i'm popping out
12:07one week y'all let me know the next week man come on hey i might come open up for you
12:10i'm gonna come tell that thing down i'm gonna open up for you metro booming is in the building
12:18now straight out of st louis you went to more house what was like that moment for the music
12:24that you was like this is it oh man i mean i felt like that long even before that you know
12:32and that was a part of my plan to uh go to more house so i could be down here closer to achieve
12:41the things i wanted to achieve you know um uh recipes my mother back in high school she used to
12:49drive me down here nine hours here nine hours back like every other month
12:54you know just so i could be down here and work in the studio with like the ojs the gucci's like the walkers
13:00like and just even just like build these long relationships that i had with these people that
13:07look at like my brothers like south side and a lot of people like that and um man just her even
13:14believing back then i'm so grateful because i mean it's not like producing now right like now it's like a
13:22a thing that kids see like as another option it's something to do or like uh
13:28it's a lot more popular of a profession than it was
13:3215 years ago you know what i'm saying right it back then it was more like the
13:36rapping or go to the league type thing you know what i'm saying so um well people that knew about
13:41the business understood it but it wasn't it wasn't popular and glorified the way it is now exactly
13:46putting the tags on the records i think kind of really well blew it up yeah you know what i'm saying
13:50i feel like it was a number of things but even for her to uh make those sacrifices back then on
13:55something that wasn't like uh you know what i'm saying like what it is now is a blessing and just from
14:01those uh trips and experiences i knew that once i finished high school this is where i wanted to live to
14:08further pursue uh my dreams i remember when your mom passed too i didn't reach out to you because i
14:12know how overwhelming it is no for sure people hitting you but i was talking about you on the radio and
14:16just praying for you and letting people know that we got to support you you know what i'm saying
14:19because i i went through that man 99 that was like that was like one of the hardest times in your life
14:24for sure you never think you don't ever be that you don't never think mama not gonna be here
14:30right so i i was i was on i was on on your shoulders but um i appreciate that it's all for mom
14:38it is man and now i just feel like i got another angel just working with me you know the biggest
14:43angel working with me and helping to protect me and cover me and guide me you know so i'm grateful
14:49for that you know it's hard it's so hard just not having her like it's the hardest thing i know i'm
14:53ever have to deal with but um it's really like you have to learn to you grow into a space where you
15:00you always gonna feel that but you also grow into a space where you appreciate
15:05so much what she gave and what she did for you that's why i be having to think sometimes because it's
15:10like like okay yeah you lost your mother when you were relatively young but i'm still grateful for
15:19all the many 20-some years of love and care and guidance and wisdom that you know i was able to
15:27get from her you know versus like what if i lost her when i was eight you know what i'm saying so it's
15:31like i just be having to be grateful for that for that and just realizing and understanding that she
15:36could do more for me and my brother sisters up there and down here you know how grateful are
15:41you for being in this space right now you're a very important part to the fabric like what you do and
15:47what you mean to the culture to not just producing but djing and just as a human you're so important
15:53to this culture because you know i know you from rolling through wish and coming through the stores
15:57getting sneakers and all that before the music blew up way before so like what's your take on that
16:03um it's a blessing you know uh i don't take it lightly i i take it more than anything it's a
16:11responsibility you know what i'm saying like i feel like just being chosen by god and uh supported by
16:20the people to be in this position i'm in i feel like it's my responsibility to
16:24to to take this position with gratitude and and you know do everything i need to do to the best of
16:34my ability to be a great role model you know because i know a lot of people say sometimes like
16:40well it's not my job to be a role model but just knowing my position and knowing a lot of people that
16:45rock with me and that a lot a lot of my i don't like the word fans but a lot of my supporters i hate
16:52fans yeah i don't like that word but i never fans are not people i never like that word but we all
16:56regular you feel me exactly i feel like fans it puts like i don't like that but a lot of my supporters
17:03um are younger people or children you know what i'm saying or like adolescent or like 13 14 so i am
17:12very mindful a lot of things i do a lot of things i say a lot of things i might share online or um how
17:19you treat people you know more than anything how i treat people like people always so surprised
17:23every time i have a shoot like a video shoot photo shoot anything and when i before i leave
17:29i go and shake and speak to every single person in the room i don't matter if they over there
17:33catering i don't matter they over sweeping up i don't matter they over breaking down lights
17:37and just every time everybody just so shocked and stunned by it you know what i'm saying that's mama
17:42that that's what character and that's why i was coming back let let young people know like young
17:48artists and producers understand how important it is to hold yourself accountable and to build your
17:53character as a person and as a human and how much how important that is to your talent like people
18:00think it's just talent they don't understand like the business how you move like everybody everybody
18:05has a talent everybody has a gift but some people think they so much talent than everybody else and they
18:09don't understand like it's really not even about you it's not it's about how you treat other people
18:15how people remember you exactly that one interaction that somebody had with you like even if you are
18:20tired i might had a bad day this day one interaction with you and it's a bad one now they just think
18:24this is who you are you feel me so like i feel like that character it comes back around full circle
18:29like you were saying just with how my mother was raised raised me and i was always this way before
18:34she passed but even after she passed i i make an even more conscious effort to represent how i know
18:40she brought me up and not just be out here you know a lot of people they might have been raised right
18:44but they just run around acting like they ain't had no parents they ain't got no no common sense and
18:49no you know what i'm saying like you doing your parents a disservice when they really did the right
18:53thing you know what i'm saying she overly overly did the right thing the rightest thing so um yeah man it's
18:59about how you treat people uh like like you were saying it's not all about the talent like
19:05there's so many talented people but you know that it's ups and downs in this game you feel me so like
19:10if you just relying on your talent treat everybody like and maybe one year you start to get kind of
19:16cold like nobody's trying to help you nobody's trying to sit down v103 and talk to you nobody's
19:21trying to about your new whatever you're trying to do nobody's trying to um lend you an olive branch or
19:27any kind of opportunities to help you know and i've seen it happen so many times and i'm just
19:32to a lot of talented people to a lot of talented people i've seen it happen in real time i've seen
19:36the rise i've seen the arrogance then i've seen the they try to come back and be humble later and
19:42it's like they don't really want to hear that now because when you was hot you was just shitting on
19:46everybody i don't know how cuts on here my bad no not really but yeah my bad i won't do again but yeah um
19:52i try to always just treat everybody with the utmost respect and that's not
20:00and that's not to get anything in return that's just exactly who i am no expectation no expectation
20:05it's like i'm giving from the heart like i'm a real i'm a i'm a real giver like it don't cost
20:10anything to be kind nothing it costs nothing and i feel like could have some of the most impact on
20:16your life and others you know so it's like people don't get it like for people with that with with
20:21your with your vision and your understanding of it a lot of artists don't even understand it's all
20:27about the approach it ain't even about the money for the track it's about the approach it's about
20:30how you present yourself how we interact right exactly that's another thing like i always get a
20:36question running to somebody like man we got money too man like how much for a beat like and i always
20:41tell people like i don't if i had to even come up with a price but i wouldn't even know what to tell you
20:46like i honestly wouldn't you know um a lot of thank you and they think you're being funny and
20:51they might that's why i don't even like them conversations like i try to just direct them
20:55to somebody because if i just tell you real you're gonna think i'm trying to play you but it's not
20:59i really wouldn't even know what to tell you bro like i like how i make music i love to work with
21:05artists and people who inspire me because i feel like they make it easier for us to do what we need to do
21:10um or being moved by like i feel like yeah early in my career like you know we had a hustle i used to
21:18sell beats i had a burner phone i used to tweet the number all day like come by beats to all this
21:25back in them type days but i feel like i'm in a place and been in a place by the grace of god for
21:29a long time i only like really like to do what i move by right you know or else i feel like we just
21:36doing stuff then but even back in those days when you were doing that you can tell like it was a
21:41whole blessing game it was like you was coming up with different ideas and strategies to make people
21:45know that you were serious about your craft and what you was oh yeah it was necessary it was like
21:50you know what i'm saying like you had to have that period you know what i'm saying to get like
21:54you there's no this period without that one you know what i'm saying like you got to come and
21:58show and prove you know what i'm saying growth yeah growth but but just being focused like like you
22:04said your upbringing was so incredible you were so focused on what you was doing by the time you
22:09started getting in these lanes and getting in these circles it was easy for you to move because you
22:13understood respect right for sure you understood respect you understood how to move you understood how
22:19to treat people and that grew to a massive career and just something that you could stand up on and be
22:24like hey it's really easy it's just all in about how you move because i'm good at what i do already
22:30god gave me the gift for sure i was born with the gift but the manifestation came with understanding
22:37how to move right and that how to move like you were saying i feel like that's that's how you unlock
22:41those next levels because like like you said we were saying earlier there's a lot of talented people but
22:47at the end of the day the music industry is still the industry so just like any business i don't care
22:52if you work in finance you do this you sell houses like in business for people want to do business with you
23:00you have to be you have to have likable traits you know what i'm saying to excel in business so it's like
23:08just me as a producer and um having proven everything i've proved so far and uh
23:16made a name for myself by uh
23:21having the trust for people being able to trust something that my name's next to like okay cool we've
23:28done that part but uh even more than that is people continue continuing to want to work with
23:35me and do things with me offer opportunities to me just based off the person i am you know what i'm
23:41saying that's what i was saying about just in business it's like being liked or being like a bull
23:47not saying you got to do anything fake just just like be yourself exactly so i feel like that uh
23:54i've always noticed that i feel like that's responsible for a lot of blessings that i have
24:01futuristic summer album is out now after futuristic summer where we going
24:08what you thinking i've been thinking about that because we did the tape we did the tape in
24:14probably a month and a half two well first the first few weeks i didn't even know i was doing
24:22the tape i was going to studio with jay money then that speaks volumes did you say that again at first
24:30i was just going to studio with jay money say it again it started out with me and jay money just
24:34going to the studio okay now right there metro booming it started with me just going in the
24:42studio with jay money if you was metro booming you wouldn't have been thinking about jay money
24:49face you know what i'm saying so it's like put your ego to the side put your ego to the side
24:56reach to your people that you really have a genuine love and respect for no matter what level you on or
25:02what level they on because we all put our pants on the same way man we all bleed you know what i'm
25:08saying and we all here today and we all gonna be going one other day so i don't all that the
25:14hierarchy or i'm up here you like you know that's never existed to me you know never but it started
25:20with me and jay money in the studio and then that same week it turned into me jay money and rosco dash
25:25in the studio and we're making a lot of great records then you know what i'm saying then i started
25:31calling shot in them and then travis porter got in and walker not really that order but it just
25:37started to keep growing and we started had this collection of songs where i was just like man we
25:42could really put the tape out real quick because like all this this all sounded so great and over
25:47like that was probably like a two month span we did i know how people say stuff and exaggerate like
25:54numbers on stuff or like we did this we did but i look i was looking at the files from all the sessions
25:59we we definitely did over 100 ideas in this time wow you know i might need one of them futuristic
26:05leftovers my boy hey man whatever you did hey i need one of them futuristic you know what i'm saying
26:10and i'm saying all this to say like i'm trying to see what we're gonna do next i definitely want to
26:15keep it going i look at like a marvel cinematic universe like you're gonna get your solo travis porter
26:20project yeah yeah superheroes you know what i'm saying marvel yeah so you got to do the futuristic
26:25comic book the futuristic comic book you got to do it he right why not take it back to the universe
26:30you got to do it yeah that's hard i ain't gonna lie
