Seth and Sean discuss the injuries update from DeMeco and assess if there's anything Davis Mills does better at QB than CJ Stroud, given it's looking likelier he'll get the nod on Thursday.
Transcript
00:00Here's D'Amico Ryan's updates on injuries to C.J. Stroud, Jalen Petrie, and Kaimi Fairbairn.
00:07Yeah, with a short week, just to update as of right now, C.J. and Jalen are still in the concussion protocol.
00:14We look, I think it's looking good for her to have Kaimi back this week, so we'll see how that goes.
00:20And with C.J. and Jalen, we'll kind of, again, we got to see how the week goes, you know,
00:24when they're in their concussion protocol to be available, so we'll see how it goes for them this week.
00:32Okay, so it looks like it's, if I'm reading into that 30 seconds of audio right there, I would go,
00:37Kaimi Fairbairn, sounds like he's, I know they don't have a probable designation anymore,
00:42so I'll just use it as an adjective.
00:43It sounds like he's probably going to play in this game.
00:46Jalen Petrie was limited in practice, or designated as limited in practice,
00:51so he actually did walkthroughs and did things that would lead me to believe that he's got a decent chance of playing.
00:57That he's in that part of the protocol in stage five where they, you do practice things,
01:01then they monitor you, and you see, and then after, if he practices today,
01:05maybe they'll, they'll, you know, be able to figure it out afterwards.
01:08Yep.
01:09C.J. Stroud sounds like there is a next to zero chance of him playing.
01:13Yeah, I think, especially because he is the quarterback,
01:16and you need the quarterback to be as involved mentally in everything as possible.
01:20And we don't, you know, we don't, we just have no clue where he is right now in terms of just actually die.
01:25Sometimes when guys are coming back from concussions,
01:26even digesting a game plan in the meeting room is kind of hard.
01:30So we don't know where he is.
01:32From what you've seen of Davis these last couple of games,
01:34and if we're being honest, in both games, it took a while to get going in these games.
01:38You know, they were down 29 to 10.
01:40It didn't take a while to get going in this last game.
01:42They marched down the field.
01:44They just couldn't score.
01:45They did.
01:45They did.
01:45But, I mean, it wasn't great, you know, against a bad team.
01:48They were down 3-0 at the half.
01:50You know, they started doing their damage in the second half.
01:52Are there things or a thing that Davis does better than CJ
01:58that makes you feel maybe more comfortable with Davis in this game against the Bills?
02:02Well, I think it's hard to say because you're looking at two games versus not.
02:09And you got to remember that when CJ, CJ had really sliced apart some non-marquee defenses
02:15in the last few weeks.
02:16Yep.
02:17They had a really hard, like I haven't, it's hard for me to say that Davis is doing anything
02:21better without also seeing Davis go up against the Seahawks or going up against teams like that.
02:27Or even San Francisco.
02:29Right.
02:29Well, San Francisco's defense is definitely bad now.
02:32Like, they're a bad defense now.
02:34And it started, it started that really the week before the Texans faced them.
02:37But I think that if there's one thing that maybe is different, and I, maybe the stats
02:46bear this out or not, but just some of the pre-snap motion seems to have really sprung
02:51some plays.
02:52And I don't know if it was just a matter of just the defenses they're facing, or if it
02:58has anything to do with the way that Davis is operating or orchestrating things.
03:03But on third down, especially they've had some, he's made some big time throws, but he's
03:09also just seemed like he's got more options on third down.
03:13That's what I hope that's more of a function of the whole offense than just the fact that
03:17Davis is out there.
03:18Uh, the bills are favored by five and a half in this game at NRG stadium.
03:22Does that sound about right to you?
03:24Yeah.
03:25Cause you've got your backup quarterback.
03:26I think it all comes back to that at some point.
03:28Yeah.
03:28People look at it and they don't, I know there's starting to be a growing minority of Texans
03:34fans who just think, nope, Davis is better than CJ.
03:36There you go.
03:37Like, if you feel that way, that's fine.
03:39I disagree.
03:40Um, and I think the odds makers especially as well, look at it and say, okay, you've got
03:44Josh Allen, even though the offense has been.
03:48And it's against a very good defense on the road, but, um, it's a, it's Josh Allen versus
03:54a backup quarterback.
03:55It's really interesting.
03:56These by, by the, by the, the, the coming into the season predictions, these were two
04:01of the teams that were thought to be the favorites in their division.
04:05You know, they were the defending champions in the AFC East and in the AFC South.
04:09And I think what's interesting is all four teams that were favored to win their divisions
04:14in the AFC are all in second or third place right now in their divisions.
04:20Hell three of them are out of the playoff picture entirely and sitting at five and five
04:24in the Texans, the chiefs and the Ravens.
04:26However, it feels like there's still tremendous belief in those other three non-leading the
04:34division preseason favorites.
04:36Like Buffalo, Buffalo right now is the third team on the board for the Superbowl.
04:42They're the top AFC team on the board for the Superbowl.
04:45They're not even the best team in their division by record right now.
04:47It goes Eagles, Rams, and then the bills at eight to one.
04:51The chiefs, I think I haven't looked at the AFC West math might've caught up to the chiefs
04:55now after losing to the Broncos, but the chiefs are still thought to be among the teams that,
05:00Hey, they just get into the dance.
05:01They can make a run in this thing, which is interesting because they never go on the road
05:05in the playoffs.
05:06Like they'll have to go on the road in the playoffs this year, the chiefs and then the
05:09Ravens are still, I think, heavy favorites to win the AFC North.
05:12The Texans are the only preseason division favorite where there's very little belief in right.
05:17I'll tell you what, the biggest thing, and you know, and this is where you talk about
05:20the Texans getting off to a slow start in the Titans game.
05:22This is the problem.
05:23They didn't get off to a slow start.
05:26They played it down the red zone and then stall out.
05:32So you talk about those teams you just mentioned right now, the chiefs are seventh in red zone
05:38offense.
05:38The Texans are 31st in red zone.
05:41Who's worse in the Texans?
05:44Who's 32nd?
05:44I thought you meant between the chiefs and the Texans.
05:48I know I have my moments.
05:49New Orleans.
05:51New Orleans, gotcha.
05:53Sorry.
05:53No, that's my fault.
05:55No, no, no.
05:55I should have said who's worse than the Texans.
05:58Okay.
05:59So the Titans.
06:00That just looked at me like I had six heads.
06:02The way the Titans game goes.
06:04The way the Titans game went.
06:06They had a 15 plate drive that they got no points off of.
06:09How many yards?
06:09Uh, it was 53 yards.
06:12Okay.
06:13Okay.
06:1350.
06:14The Texans.
06:14If the Texans want to know why people aren't getting the games early.
06:18Yeah.
06:19Maybe there's a lot of Bronco fans at a Bronco Texans game.
06:22Like your opening drive is 15 plays.
06:2753 yards.
06:28Yeah.
06:29I mean, I don't know the constitution of those plays.
06:34Like, are they all just runs up the middle?
06:35It's probably a lot of dink and dunk passing.
06:37Well, no, yeah.
06:38Remember he had some, he had a couple of really nice third down conversions.
06:41Oh, that's true.
06:42Remember there was a third and eight that he completed to Jaden Higgins.
06:45Okay.
06:45There was another, uh, it was a third and seven to Nico Collins.
06:49All right.
06:49Then he had that other shot, uh, to Xavier Hutchinson.
06:52That wasn't a third down, but there were some nice plays.
06:54They were, they were kind of don't go broke, taking a profit, but here, take a shot.
06:59Is that enough to get you out of the parking lot?
07:01If you're on your right beer.
07:02So that's the problem though, is that they're, they got off to a fast start of playing their
07:0931st red zone offense in the league.
07:11So then they had a, a four and our three and out.
07:14And then they did, uh, then they had 11 play 48 yard drive, which scored zero points because
07:22they got sacked.
07:23Um, Seth, you are the point master here.
07:27I mean, you're kind of making, you're kind of arguing against yourself.
07:29I'm saying they got off like somewhere.
07:31There's a set in there that would say you need points.
07:33They were playing their version of offense right off the bat.
07:36They were driving methodically down the field and then stalling out.
07:40You had these two, they came away with zero points off of a, how many plays was that first
07:46drive?
07:4712 plays 15.
07:48I think 15 played drive place.
07:50Then they had to punt once, but then they ended up having.
07:53They had an 11 play 48 yard drive, but that had been actually like 12 yards further than
07:57that.
07:57But he took a sack.
07:58They had an 11 play drive that they had to punt.
08:00That, that is a lot of foreplay right there.
08:02Yeah.
08:03Yeah.
08:03That was a lot of foreplay.
08:05Then they had a three and out.
08:06Or no scoring.
08:07Yeah.
08:07That's no three and out.
08:08That's no foreplay.
08:09That's yeah.
08:09Sorry.
08:10Sorry.
08:11Stores closed.
08:12So yes, it's a slow start in terms of your, your advanced stat of scoring actual points.
08:18Yeah.
08:18That's my advanced stat now.
08:20It was a low possessions game in the first half.
08:22It was.
08:23There were only two possessions total in the first quarter.
08:26It's twice in a row now that you've played the Colts or the Titans to an extremely tight
08:31game in the fourth quarter.
08:32The first game they ran away with it, but it was, they were winning six, nothing going
08:37into the fourth quarter.
08:38That's right.
08:39Last week they had to, they had to have a, they had to have a game winning drive to win
08:43that game.
08:44So is Jeffrey Simmons, right?
08:45Or is that team no better than the.
08:48I didn't want to call that, but Jeffrey Simmons probably doesn't watch a lot of Texans football
08:52by what he's watched.
08:54Yeah.
08:54He looks at it and goes, well, I mean, they did lose 26, nothing.
08:57Yeah.
08:57It was a really bad quarter for them.
09:00Yeah.
09:00So there you go.
09:01I think the biggest difference with the Titans is that having both Devandre sweat and Jeffrey
09:05Simmons in the game made a big difference.
09:07And yes, the, when you look at the runs, I can remember when I went the day after the
09:11game, God, was that yesterday already?
09:13This just feels, it feels like a week ago.
09:15Yesterday was the day.
09:17Yesterday when I went and I looked at the inside runs and the outside runs.
09:21And the first thing that jumped out at me is why did they have 17 inside runs and only
09:24six or seven outside runs that defense, right?
09:27And it was, the Titans were doing a good job of doing the same thing that Texans do.
09:30They have their defensive ends aligned out wide and they're crashing upfield and forcing
09:35everything back inside to those two big, those two big monsters at defensive tackle.
09:40Yep.
09:41And the Texans just physically can't, they can't win that Matt.
09:44When it is, when they turn it into a physical matchup in the run game versus guys like that,
09:49the Texans just, they're not physically intimidating enough to do it.
09:53Well, they party yourself and they're not matted.
09:55And go home.
09:55Now with it.
10:00Ok.
10:01And now I're you going to watch, you wait.
10:03Yeah.
10:03You are working straight now and put it in, please.
10:05We don't make the steps at V게.
10:05Bye-bye.
10:06You are done.
10:07And I'm
10:11here.
10:12And you already.
10:15Now there is a piece of work.
10:16And that is one of the most common themes that you can use this build.
