00:00For several years in the 1970s, tantalizing concept art for a new Big Thunder Mountain
00:29Railroad attraction was displayed on Main Street inside Disneyland Presents a Preview
00:34of Coming Attractions.
00:36The preview became a reality in the fall of 1979, which unfortunately can't be said for
00:41all the ideas presented in that coming attractions room.
00:45Big Thunder was the third major mountain constructed in Disneyland.
00:49Matterhorn Mountain in 59, Space Mountain in 77, requiring two years of construction.
00:54The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad took longer to build than the entire original park did
00:59and with a price tag approaching $16 million, it cost almost as much.
01:12Right now we're standing here on the unload platform at Big Thunder Mountain where we're
01:16in the middle of one of the largest rehabs that's ever happened here since we opened the attraction
01:21back in 1979.
01:33Some of the major changes that are happening here is the replacement of the ride track
01:36and the ride vehicles.
01:38Some elements that have been here since near when the park opened, the Rainbow Ridge has
01:41been completely reconstructed.
01:43You'll see significant changes to the show audio and show lighting that have all been upgraded.
01:48Well, to be a part of a renovation of this size, it's a tremendous opportunity and I'm happy
01:55to have been a part of this.
01:57Well, we're really looking forward to seeing the looks on the guest faces when they get
02:01here and are finally able to look at all of the work that we've done out here and the
02:06new improvements that we've made for them.
02:11Howdy folks, please keep your hands, arms and legs inside the train and remain seated
02:17at all times.
02:18Now then, hang on to them hats and glasses cause this here's a wildest ride in the wilderness.
02:25The e-ticket attraction was heralded an instant classic.
02:29Its two-acre site is located in the large area in Frontierland formerly known as Nature's
02:34Wonderland.
02:35Some of the old rocks, landscaping and desert crops from that earlier era were retained,
02:40but the dominant Big Thunder feature was brand new.
02:43Standing 104 feet high, the Central Mountain is about three-quarters as tall as Matterhorn
02:48Mountain and borrows its dramatic soaring orange buttes from Utah's Bryce Canyon National Park.
02:54As a high-speed roller coaster, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was designed to compete with other
02:58Southern California theme parks that were wowing 70s teens with rapidly proliferating variations
03:04of highly kinetic roller coasters.
03:07Big Thunder's half-mile-long track is steep, tightly curved and wet thanks to a splash area
03:13similar to the one at the end of Meadowhorn Mountain bobsleds.
03:16Though they average only about 30 miles per hour during the three-minute trip, the half-dozen
03:21runaway trains seem faster and definitely put the wild in wild west.
03:25The rollicking trains are noisy, too. Steven Spielberg recorded the raucous sounds to accompany
03:30the mine cart chase in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
03:34More than just thrills, though, Big Thunder has always offered humorous details and Frontier
03:39allure. Before guests board the trains, they encounter little details that add to the Western
03:43theme, such as a sign that touts Big Thunder as the biggest little boomtown in the West, with
03:49a steadily decreasing population, an exposed wall of dinosaur bones, and miniature of the
03:55Rainbow Ridge town that once graced the loading area for the old mine train.
04:00Along the track itself are threatening rock slides, swarms of menacing bats, and an assortment
04:06of mechanical wildlife. Frontier flair is everywhere. An old coot narrates the attraction. Genuine
04:11Old West antiques decorate the queue area. The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction was
04:16manufactured by Walt Disney World Company in September 1979. The attraction is a roller coaster-style
04:22ride with a height requirement of 40 inches and a track length of 2,671 feet. The track
04:28is of a tri-rail design, with two load rails, a third rail or backbone, and three chain lifts.
04:35The track is divided into six zones. Each zone is sealed and air pressurized. Pneumatically
04:40activated and spring-released fin brakes slow or stop the train, and linear induction mortars
04:46use a brake fin to accelerate or decelerate the train. The mountain is 104 feet tall. The
04:52upper buttes weigh up to 28 tons. Names of the trains. You are Daring. I am Brave, replaced
04:59by I am Loco. I am Fearless. I be Hardy. You be Bold. You are Courageous.
05:05The legends say that this peaceful looking mine is anything but peaceful. Of course you'd have
05:13to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to fully understand.
05:20You're all good at all, it's a bad soul. You're all good at all. They don't go back on
05:21the runway. You're all good at all. Don't go back on the floor.
05:22You're all good at all. Don't go back on the floor.
05:27Yes. Jack, you're just pandy.
