Transcript
00:00We're outside Ballarat Law Courts today where Lachlan Young has just been sentenced to 28
00:04years behind bars for the murder of Hannah Maguire. Hannah was just 23 years old when
00:09Young strangled to his death in the early hours of April 5, 2024. Justice Elliott, speaking directly
00:14to Young, said the level of emotion and heartache that you have caused to Hannah's family, Hannah's
00:20friends, Hannah's work colleagues and the community of Ballarat and Clunes generally cannot be
00:24overstated. She was obviously a very special, talented and giving person. He said Hannah's
00:30murder is yet another example of males using violence and their superior strength to murder
00:34a vulnerable woman. Your interactions towards Miss Maguire had all the hallmarks of an abusive
00:40and domineering relationship, he said. You spoke to her in the most appalling terms. Young's trial
00:45was in its eighth day when he changed his plea to guilty, having previously only pled guilty to
00:49manslaughter. Hannah was in the midst of trying to end her abusive relationship when Young strangled her
00:54and Justice Elliott highlighted that relationship ceasing is a part of the human experience
00:59and must be handled by both parties without violence. Following the sentencing, Hannah's
01:04parents, Debbie and Glenn Maguire, spoke outside of court. I'm relieved that the court has delivered
01:08its sentence today. While nothing can bring back what we've lost or erase the pain we continue to carry,
01:14today's outcome is an important step in our journey towards healing. We want to express our heartfelt
01:20gratitude to our family, friends and community for their unwavering support over the past 19 months.
01:27We could not have made it through without any of them. We would also like to thank everyone
01:32involved in the investigation and the judicial process, particularly Detective Senior Constable
01:36James Allen and Senior Crown Prosecutor Christy Churchill. Their professionalism, dedication and
01:44compassion have meant a great deal to us. As you can appreciate, this has been an incredibly difficult
01:50ordeal. We now need time together as a family to process today's result. We kindly ask for privacy as
01:57we continue to rebuild our lives and we won't take any further questions at this point in time.
02:03Young will spend a total of 22 years and four months behind bars before he's eligible for court.
02:14So I'm going to move on to another person's website. We will try to rebuild our children and
02:21how much is we...
02:23Take care about what he is that although he has to still be recognized for the humanities,
02:26it's told to close the field of violence.
